Belkin ended Wemo cloud services and support for affected products on January 31, 2026. The Wemo app, remote access, and cloud-dependent Alexa and Google Assistant controls have stopped working. That does not mean every Wemo device is physically unusable: some devices configured with Apple Home before the deadline may still work locally, and Belkin identifies four Thread models as unaffected. Check the model number—not just the product name—to see where your device stands.
What the Wemo shutdown changed
Belkin’s January 2026 support notice says the Wemo cloud shutdown took effect on January 31, 2026. For affected products, the Wemo app and remote access ended, and the app will not receive further updates. Alexa and Google Assistant integrations also stopped because they depend on Wemo cloud connectivity. Belkin’s shutdown notice describes the affected products and exceptions.
The shutdown concerns smart features, not necessarily the underlying electrical hardware. A wall switch may still operate by hand, for example, while app and voice controls no longer work. Likewise, a plug may still pass power when switched on, but that does not restore its discontinued smart controls.

Belkin says products configured with Apple HomeKit before the cutoff may continue to work through Apple Home. It also identifies four Thread products as unaffected. HomeKit compatibility alone is not enough: a compatible device that was not set up with HomeKit before the deadline cannot now be newly added or reconfigured through that route, according to Belkin.

Find your model number and check the lists
Look for the model or SKU printed on the device, its packaging, or the original order record. Similar product names can have different outcomes: Belkin’s list, for instance, gives different HomeKit status to the Wemo Mini Smart Plug models WSP070 and WSP080.
Products that may continue through Apple Home
Belkin says the following models may continue through Apple HomeKit if they were configured before January 31, 2026. This is not a list of devices that can still be newly set up with HomeKit after the shutdown.

Thread models Belkin identifies as unaffected
Belkin specifically says these four Thread-based models are not affected by the cloud shutdown and will continue through HomeKit. Confirm the model number; a similar-looking Wemo product may not share that status.

What to do with a Wemo device you already own
If it still works in Apple Home
Keep it paired. As a practical precaution, do not remove it from Apple Home or factory-reset it just to troubleshoot the discontinued Wemo app: Belkin says post-shutdown HomeKit setup and reconfiguration are unavailable, so you may not be able to restore the pairing.
If it relied on Wemo, Alexa, or Google Home
Check the model against Belkin’s list and plan on replacement if smart control matters. Reinstalling the Wemo app as though this were a routine login or Wi-Fi fault will not restore a discontinued cloud service. A physical switch may remain usable by hand, but the cloud-dependent app and voice functions are gone.

If you are considering an unofficial workaround
Unofficial local-control projects may exist for particular models, but compatibility is model-specific. Belkin’s support information does not establish that Home Assistant, custom firmware, local APIs, or community bridges can recover a given Wemo after shutdown. Do not rely on any of these as a guaranteed fix without verified model-specific documentation.
How to request a refund
Belkin says affected products still under warranty on or after January 31, 2026 may qualify for a refund. Eligibility is not automatic: Belkin reviews claims individually, and its published information does not promise a universal refund amount. Warranty periods listed for a product historically do not establish that a particular unit is still covered.
- Gather the device model and serial number.
- Find valid proof of purchase showing the purchase date and price.
- Submit the details using Belkin’s Wemo end-of-support form, which also requests contact information.
- Wait for Belkin’s individual review to determine eligibility and any refund outcome.
The cited Belkin support information is for the US; warranty rights and claim handling can differ by region.

Choosing a replacement without repeating the same problem
For a new smart-home purchase, Matter can offer a more interoperable alternative to a single vendor’s proprietary cloud, but it is not a blanket guarantee that every feature is cloud-free. TP-Link says its Matter products work with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and other compatible platforms; use still requires a compatible Matter controller or hub. Check the specific product’s requirements and supported functions before buying. TP-Link’s US Tapo Matter collection lists product types and availability.
- Match the physical form: Decide whether you need a plug-in module, an in-wall outlet, an outdoor-rated plug, or a fixed wall switch. A plug is not a substitute for properly installed fixed lighting control.
- Match the circuit: A single-pole switch is not a replacement for a three-way installation. TP-Link identifies the Tapo S505 as a single-pole switch that is not compatible with three-way wiring. For any in-wall replacement, verify circuit type, neutral-wire and load requirements, and whether the kit includes all necessary components; use a qualified electrician when appropriate.
- Check for energy monitoring: Owners replacing a Wemo Insight may need a plug with energy monitoring, not just on/off control. Confirm that the exact model reports the measurements you need.
- Confirm controller and platform support: Make sure you have a compatible Matter controller and that your preferred Apple, Google, Alexa, or SmartThings setup supports the product’s functions.
- Check the load and rating: Do not use a smart plug for a motor, heater, medical device, or other safety-critical load unless the appliance and plug ratings explicitly permit that use.
Prices and stock on vendor stores change; check current availability and specifications rather than relying on an old listing. Buying a used Wemo is especially risky: it may depend on discontinued services or require a HomeKit pairing history that cannot be recreated.
Dispose of unusable equipment safely
Belkin recommends taking unusable products to an authorized electronic-waste recycling center. Smart plugs, switches, cameras, and other powered electronics should not go in ordinary household recycling unless your local program specifically accepts them. Local disposal rules vary, so check your municipality’s e-waste guidance.
