Make a small basket with a printable paper template, yarn or raffia, scissors, and tape. This beginner-friendly paper-spoke project uses a simple alternating weave; it is a craft activity, not a guide to the many distinct traditions of basketry.
What you need
- A printable basket template
- Scissors
- Yarn or raffia
- Clear or decorative tape
A kit is optional: the Museum of Fine Arts Boston describes this project as doable with the kit or materials gathered at home. Follow its basket-weaving activity for the printable template and project guidance.
How to weave a basket in 10 steps
- Prepare the template. Print the basket template and gather your materials.
- Cut out the shape. Cut around the outer edge, keeping the central circle intact; that circle will form the base.
- Make the spokes. Cut out the marked triangular spaces to leave upright strips around the base. Gently bend the strips upward to form a bowl shape.
- Anchor your strand. Tape one end of the yarn or raffia to the inside of the base.
- Start the weave. Bring the strand from inside to outside, around one upright strip and behind the next.
- Secure the bottom. Continue around the full base, then make a second circuit to help hold the lower structure together.
- Build the sides. Keep following the same alternating pattern, pushing each new row gently toward the row below. Avoid pulling tightly, since tension can tear the paper spokes.
- Add more strand if needed. Tie on a new piece when the strand runs short, keeping the knot inside the basket.
- Secure and trim. Near the top, fasten the working strand to a woven section. Trim the paper spokes evenly, taking care not to cut the yarn or raffia.
- Finish the rim. Fold the remaining spokes over the top edge and tape them down.
Why the alternating weave works
The upright paper strips create the frame, while the yarn or raffia passes around them to fill the sides. Keep each row close to the one below it, but use only enough tension to hold the shape. The Metropolitan Museum of Art sums up its basket tutorial with the phrase “Under, over, around, and through.” Its MetKids basket tutorial was published June 19, 2020.

The Met describes a separate method using a flattened cereal box. It does not use the circular template: the box base stays connected to parallel cardboard strips, which become the uprights.

- Flatten a cereal box and cut parallel strips, leaving the base connected.
- Bend the strips upright and weave a separate cardboard strip under and over them, continuing toward the top.
- Fold the ends over the edge and glue or tape them down.
This box-strip construction differs from the yarn-or-raffia paper-spoke basket, so use the directions for the method you choose rather than mixing their bases or finishing steps.
How this craft differs from traditional basketry
Basketmaking is not one universal technique. In its account of basketry in the Philippines, the National Museum of the Philippines connects material choices and preparation to regional resources, practical needs, trade, and ecological sustainability. Its documented uses include agricultural transport and storage, food preparation, and fishing; materials include bamboo, rattan, buri palm, pandan, sedges, and reeds. See Mats and Baskets.

A specific example identified by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston is a historic basket made by the Indigenous Pomo people of Northern California. Its willow rods serve as warp and carex roots as weft, with redbud splints providing added support. That is a distinct practice, not the same construction as this paper craft.
What changes in a traditional reed project
Traditional reed basketry uses structural spokes and flexible weavers rather than paper strips and yarn. California State Parks describes soaking reed to make it pliable and twining with two alternating weavers. Its guide lists reed, cutters, an awl, a measuring tool, needle-nosed pliers, and a bucket among the materials and tools for that kind of work. Read its Basketry guide for the preparation, terminology, and technique; this is a different project from the ten-step starter craft.
