AT&T Smart Home Manager is a free app and browser tool for managing an eligible AT&T gateway or All-Fi Hub. It lets you see connected devices, change Wi-Fi credentials, create profiles, pause access, schedule downtime, test coverage, restart equipment, and troubleshoot common problems. It does not increase a gateway’s radio range by itself, and its controls vary by AT&T service, gateway model, account permissions, and feature rollout.
What AT&T Smart Home Manager actually is
Smart Home Manager is primarily an AT&T home-network management tool, not a general smart-home controller. Lights, cameras, thermostats, and speakers appear mainly as devices connected to your AT&T network; the app is not a universal replacement for Google Home, Apple Home, or a dedicated security platform.
You can use the iOS or Android app or the browser experience with the AT&T User ID associated with your internet account. The app handles network setup and controls, while myAT&T is oriented toward billing, payments, orders, and account details. AT&T’s feature overview is at AT&T’s Smart Home Manager support page.
Who can use it?
AT&T says Smart Home Manager is available to customers with AT&T Internet, Internet Air, Fixed Wireless Internet, or some Small Business Internet services when paired with a supported gateway or All-Fi Hub. Exact menus and controls depend on the equipment and account.

- Compatible AT&T gateways and All-Fi Hubs are required; not every model exposes every feature.
- The internet account holder or an authorized user generally needs the correct AT&T User ID.
- Apartment, landlord-provided, and managed networks may not give residents administrative access because another account holder controls the gateway.
- A third-party router may hide devices from Smart Home Manager and change which AT&T security controls work.
Install the app and sign in
- Download Smart Home Manager from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Open the app and sign in with the AT&T User ID and password tied to the internet service.
- Complete any gateway-activation or setup prompts.
- Allow notifications if you want network-health or troubleshooting alerts.
If setup fails, verify that you are not using a wireless-only or unrelated AT&T login, confirm that new service has activated, update the app, restart the phone and gateway, and try the browser version. Temporarily disabling a VPN or private relay can help when the app cannot establish a connection. If the account still does not recognize the gateway, check for an outage and contact AT&T; reinstalling the app cannot fix an activation or account-provisioning problem.
Manage devices, profiles, and access
Identify and rename devices
Current documented paths are Profiles & devices in the app or Network → Connected Devices in the browser version. Select a device, give it a useful name such as “Living-room TV,” and assign it to a profile when appropriate. AT&T’s instructions are at its profiles and device-controls page.
Names are inferred from hostnames, manufacturers, or MAC addresses, so an “unknown” device is not automatically an intruder. Phones using private Wi-Fi addresses can appear as separate devices, offline equipment may remain listed temporarily, and gateways or extenders cannot necessarily be assigned to household profiles.
Create profiles and pause access
Profiles can group devices by person, room, or purpose, such as Kids, Guest devices, Work, or Smart home. In the app, open Profiles & devices, select a device, tap the plus sign, name the profile, add devices, and tap Save. In a browser, choose Network, then Connected Devices, use the plus sign under Profiles, and save.

Supported gateways listed by AT&T include the BGW320, BGW210, NVG599, Pace 5268AC, and All-Fi Hub CGW450, but the list and available controls can change. A pause blocks that device or profile from using the AT&T gateway’s network; it does not disable the device itself. If a child switches to cellular data, another Wi-Fi network, a hotspot, or a VPN, a home Wi-Fi pause may no longer apply.
Change the Wi-Fi name or password
Smart Home Manager can display or update the network name and password on supported gateways. A password change disconnects existing devices, so record the new credentials first and be prepared to reconnect phones, televisions, cameras, printers, speakers, thermostats, and locks.
Use guest Wi-Fi
A guest network gives visitors a separate name and password, avoiding disclosure of the primary credential. AT&T says guest-network devices generally cannot share files or printers with devices on the main network. Some smart-home devices also need local communication with a phone or hub, so test pairing before moving them to guest Wi-Fi.
Test speed and coverage before buying equipment
The mobile app can test Wi-Fi speed and identify weak-signal areas. Distinguish three measurements:

- Gateway or internet speed: the connection from the gateway to AT&T.
- Device Wi-Fi speed: the connection between one device and the gateway.
- Coverage: whether signal reaches a location reliably.
- Run a test near the gateway.
- Run another in the problem room.
- Repeat with one device and, if possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet.
- Move the gateway to a central, elevated, unobstructed location and retest.
Walls, distance, interference, client hardware, congestion, VPNs, and other traffic can change results. A faster broadband tier does not automatically fix a distant dead zone.
Restarting and resetting the gateway
Smart Home Manager can guide troubleshooting and restart the gateway. A restart refreshes the connection while normally preserving settings. A factory reset erases configuration and should be reserved for equipment-specific recovery instructions. AT&T’s equipment guidance says to hold the gateway’s Reset button for at least 10 seconds; treat that as a last resort because devices may need to be reconfigured. See AT&T Wi-Fi equipment guidance.
Parental controls: useful, but limited to the home network
Profiles can pause devices, schedule downtime, and, on supported gateways, apply access or content controls. They cannot reliably govern cellular data, another network, a personal hotspot, or every encrypted app. Device-level controls may still be needed for phones and tablets. AT&T associates advanced web and content filters with ActiveArmor advanced internet security and specific service and gateway conditions.
ActiveArmor and the third-party-router trade-off
Basic ActiveArmor is network-level protection delivered through a supported AT&T gateway or All-Fi Hub. It is not endpoint antivirus and cannot guarantee detection of every compromise or user-authorized action. AT&T’s requirements and limitations are described at the ActiveArmor support page.

AT&T advertises ActiveArmor advanced internet security at $7 per month plus tax as shown in August 2026. The offer requires AT&T Fiber, a BGW320 or newer gateway, and enabled security features; advertised tools include VPN at Home for up to five connected devices, ID monitoring, advanced content controls, and a threat dashboard. If a third-party router performs routing and DHCP, devices behind it may not be visible to Smart Home Manager or protected by ActiveArmor in the same way. An AT&T gateway-only network is simplest; third-party access points in AP mode may preserve gateway routing; a third-party router as the primary router provides more control but less AT&T integration. Exact behavior depends on gateway model and configuration.
Internet Backup explained
AT&T advertises Internet Backup for an active Fiber plan using a BGW320 or BGW620 residential gateway and an eligible unlimited postpaid AT&T Wireless plan. The account holder or authorized wireless user activates it in Smart Home Manager. It uses the wireless connection when the wired service fails, but AT&T says it does not work during a power outage. It is therefore not a substitute for a battery backup, and performance may differ in speed, latency, and usage limits. Details are in AT&T’s Internet Backup support article.

Extenders, wired access points, or mesh?
For older Smart Wi-Fi Extender guidance, open Tools, choose Do I need Smart Wi-Fi extenders?, answer the questions, and select GET RECOMMENDATION. During installation, AT&T’s quick-start guide recommends placing the extender in the room next to the gateway, then adding it through the app’s network-hardware menu: extender quick-start guide.

AT&T warns that non-AT&T extenders do not integrate with Smart Home Manager and are not guaranteed compatible. Do not buy an extender until placement, outage, gateway, and wired-versus-wireless causes have been ruled out.

Stay with AT&T equipment when convenience, support, ActiveArmor, Internet Backup, or integrated extenders matter most. Consider third-party equipment when you need detailed analytics, VLANs, custom DNS or VPN policies, stronger roaming, or a vendor-neutral network and are comfortable managing the added complexity.
Common problems and fixes
The app cannot find the gateway
Check gateway lights, restart it, confirm that the signed-in User ID owns the internet service, try the browser version, and check for an outage. Unsupported equipment, incomplete activation, account permissions, backend synchronization, or a separate router can all prevent discovery.
A device is unknown, duplicated, or missing
Turn household devices off one at a time, refresh the list, compare MAC information where available, and rename confirmed devices. Private addresses, extenders, bridges, generic hostnames, and stale offline entries can all confuse identification.
A pause does not work
Check whether the device switched to cellular data or another network, sits behind another router, belongs to the wrong profile, or changed its private MAC address. Allow time for synchronization before repeating the test.
Speed tests disagree
Compare the same device and location, note Wi-Fi band and distance, stop competing traffic, disable a VPN temporarily, and compare Ethernet where possible. One in-app result is not proof of the maximum speed available to every device.
Verdict
Smart Home Manager is the practical choice for AT&T customers who want straightforward visibility, family access controls, gateway troubleshooting, and AT&T-managed security in one place. It is not a universal smart-home platform and cannot solve physical coverage limits. If placement and testing do not resolve a dead zone, choose an AT&T-compatible extender, a wired access point, or a third-party mesh system with a clear understanding of the resulting loss of Smart Home Manager and ActiveArmor visibility.
