The Atlas Scientific Wi‑Fi Hydroponics Kit measures pH, electrical conductivity (EC) and temperature, then sends readings to a ThingSpeak dashboard. Atlas’s current product listing describes an assembled kit that needs no soldering or programming for its intended setup; the detailed Arduino instructions below are for older revisions, firmware recovery or customization—not necessarily the first step for a new kit. The system suits growers and makers comfortable with probe calibration and maintenance more than people looking for a maintenance-free consumer controller.

What the kit does—and what it does not do

The kit monitors pH, conductivity and temperature. The pH and EC readings are automatically temperature compensated. Data is sent to ThingSpeak so it can be viewed remotely. The system can be expanded with additional sensors or configured to control a dosing pump, but pump control is not automatic nutrient management out of the box: it depends on the added hardware, code, plumbing and safety limits you configure.

Atlas lists a pH range of 0–14 at 0.01 resolution, conductivity from 0–200,000 µS/cm at 1 µS resolution, 5 V operation and 310 mA consumption at 5 V. Its enclosure is rated IP64—dust-protected and resistant to splashes, not suitable for immersion or flooding. See the current product listing for specifications and the latest configuration options.

Check your kit revision before connecting or flashing it

The current Atlas listing describes an assembled enclosure supplied with a 3-foot USB-C cable and says no programming is necessary. The 2021 setup tutorial documents an earlier manual workflow using an Adafruit HUZZAH32/ESP32 and a USB-A-to-micro-USB cable. Check the connector and documentation for your particular kit. If yours is the current assembled model, begin with its supplied instructions and basic network setup; use the Arduino procedure below only if you need to restore or customize firmware or your revision requires it.

The documented manual workflow was developed and tested on Windows. The original guide says macOS was not tested; that is not the same as saying it is unsupported.

What you need

  • The kit, its probes and the correct USB power source: stable 5 V power.
  • A Wi‑Fi network available where the enclosure will be installed.
  • A ThingSpeak account and a phone, tablet or computer for viewing the channel.
  • Calibration solutions appropriate to your probes, plus clean rinse water.
  • A dry, stable mounting location protected from splashes.

For the legacy/manual firmware route, also prepare a USB data cable (not a charge-only cable), Arduino IDE, ESP32 board support, the ThingSpeak Arduino library, and Atlas Scientific’s EZO I2C library. You will need Wi‑Fi credentials, a ThingSpeak Channel ID and its Write API Key.

The current full-kit listing includes an assembled enclosure; EZO pH, EC and RTD temperature circuits; a pH probe and pH 4, 7 and 10 calibration pouches; a PT-1000 temperature probe; and an EC probe selected as K 0.1, K 1.0 or K10, with matching calibration solutions. Confirm the order contents and probe K value: calibration procedures and solutions are not interchangeable across all EC probes.

Set up ThingSpeak

  1. Create a ThingSpeak account. Atlas’s setup guide documents a free account for the standard setup.
  2. Create a channel and enable three fields before saving it: Field 1: pH, Field 2: EC (µS/cm) and Field 3: Temp (°C).
  3. Record the channel’s Channel ID and Write API Key. Keep the key private; do not expose it in screenshots, public code repositories or shared documents.

The field order matters because the documented firmware sends pH, EC and temperature in that sequence. A visible reading on the device does not, by itself, prove that ThingSpeak received it.

Power on and confirm data

Connect the kit using its supplied cable and a suitable 5 V source. Follow the instructions for your revision to connect it to Wi‑Fi and the ThingSpeak channel. Confirm success in two places: readings should be available locally (or in the serial output if using the manual workflow), and the ThingSpeak channel should show new entries with an advancing timestamp. Atlas’s setup documentation describes a 15-second interval for the free-account workflow. Treat that as the documented setup behavior, not a guarantee of every current ThingSpeak plan; check ThingSpeak for current account limits.

Legacy or recovery setup: upload firmware with Arduino IDE

Do not flash firmware simply because an older tutorial includes that step. If your kit needs the documented manual setup or a firmware recovery, use the code and instructions applicable to your hardware revision; menu names and board-package behavior can change.

  1. Install ESP32 board support. In Arduino IDE, open File > Preferences and add this Boards Manager URL: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/espressif/arduino-esp32/gh-pages/package_esp32_index.json. Then open Tools > Board > Boards Manager and install/update ESP32 support. The 2021 guide advises updating from version 1.0.5 but does not establish a current pinned version; do not assume a particular newer package is compatible without checking the kit’s current code and documentation.
  2. Install the libraries. Install the ThingSpeak Arduino library using Arduino IDE’s library tools. For the Atlas library, download the official EZO I2C library and use Sketch > Include Library > Add .ZIP Library.
  3. Open the hydroponics example. The older guide gives this path: File > Examples > EZO_I2C_lib-master > Examples > IOT_kits > hydroponics_kit. The folder or example name may differ in a newer library release.
  4. Enter your credentials. Add the Wi‑Fi network name and password, ThingSpeak Channel ID and Write API Key in the sketch. Do not share a sketch containing live credentials. If you are not adding a dosing pump, skip pump-related configuration; if you are, configure and test its thresholds and safeguards separately.
  5. Select the board and port. The documented target is Tools > Board > ESP32 Arduino > Adafruit ESP32 Feather for the HUZZAH32. Choose the serial port belonging to the kit. Board labels and options can vary with IDE and ESP32 package versions, so verify the target against your kit revision.
  6. Compile and upload. Connect with a data-capable USB cable, compile and upload. A successful upload should be followed by a boot and attempts to connect to Wi‑Fi and ThingSpeak. Open the serial monitor if you need to inspect output.

For the documented serial workflow, set the monitor to 9600 baud and Carriage return line ending. Enter poll to stop ThingSpeak uploads and display readings approximately once per second. This is useful for checking sensors and calibrating without upload activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calibrate the probes

Calibration is essential even when readings are uploaded automatically. Use fresh, appropriate solutions, avoid contaminating them by returning used liquid to the pouch or bottle, and rinse the probe between solutions. Let readings stabilize before issuing calibration commands.

pH: calibrate 7, then 4, then 10

  1. Remove the probe’s soaker bottle and rinse the probe.
  2. Place it in pH 7.00 solution and wait about 1–2 minutes, or until the reading is stable.
  3. Enter the verified midpoint command: ph:cal,mid,7.
  4. Rinse, place the probe in pH 4.00 solution, allow it to stabilize, and perform the low-point calibration using the command specified in current EZO pH documentation.
  5. Rinse again and repeat with pH 10.00 solution for the high-point calibration, following current EZO pH documentation.

The required sequence and midpoint command are documented by Atlas. The low- and high-point command syntax is not reproduced here because it should be confirmed against the current EZO pH instructions for your circuit and firmware. Follow the probe’s storage guidance; letting a pH probe dry or using contaminated buffers can lead to drift.

Conductivity: use the procedure for your K value

The commands and calibration standards below are specifically the documented K1.0 procedure. Do not apply them to K0.1 or K10 probes unless the current instructions for that probe explicitly call for it.

  1. Make sure the probe is dry, then enter ec:cal, dry.
  2. Place it in 12,880 µS/cm solution. Gently shake to dislodge trapped air bubbles, then wait for a stable reading.
  3. Enter ec:cal,low,12880.
  4. Rinse the probe and place it in 80,000 µS/cm solution. Remove bubbles and wait for stability.
  5. Enter ec:cal,high,80000.

Check the probe label, included standards and applicable Atlas instructions first. A reading may initially differ from the standard while the probe stabilizes; do not interrupt calibration prematurely. Implausible results call for checking the K value, solution condition, immersion depth, bubbles and command sequence.

Temperature calibration is optional

The guide documents rtd:cal,t, where t is the actual temperature. Do not assume boiling water is exactly 100 °C: its boiling point varies with elevation, and handling hot water creates a burn risk. If you calibrate temperature, use a reliable reference and a safe method, and enter the actual measured temperature.

Resume normal logging

When calibration is complete, enter datalog in the documented serial workflow. Confirm that normal readings resume and that ThingSpeak timestamps advance. The documented free-account cycle uploads approximately every 15 seconds; faster intervals depend on ThingSpeak’s current account limits and firmware configuration.

Troubleshooting

No power or no serial output

  • Check the 5 V source, cable and connections. A charge-only cable may power the board but cannot transfer firmware or serial data.
  • For Arduino access, confirm the kit’s serial port is selected and that the monitor is set to 9600 baud with Carriage return line endings.
  • On the manual path, verify ESP32 support, the board target, and the cable before troubleshooting the sensors.

Arduino upload fails

Check the selected board and serial port, try a known data-capable USB cable, and confirm ESP32 support and both required libraries are installed. If the example path has changed or the upload fails after a board-package update, verify compatibility with the current Atlas code and your hardware revision rather than repeatedly flashing an unrelated example.

Wi‑Fi will not connect

Check SSID and password spelling, signal at the installation location, stable 5 V power and whether the firmware contains the right credentials. In the legacy serial workflow, enter poll to halt uploads and inspect local readings while diagnosing the connection. Local readings do not confirm internet access or a successful cloud connection.

ThingSpeak shows no new data

Verify the Channel ID and Write API Key, that fields 1–3 are enabled, and that the firmware maps pH, EC and temperature to the intended fields. Check internet access—not only association with local Wi‑Fi—and allow for the configured upload interval. Keep the Write API Key private while checking it.

pH drifts or calibration does not hold

Confirm that pH 7 was calibrated first, the probe was rinsed between fresh buffers, and each reading stabilized before calibration. Check the probe’s storage instructions and make sure it has not dried out. A cloud connection cannot compensate for a poorly maintained or incorrectly calibrated probe.

EC calibration is implausible or unstable

Confirm the K value and matching standards; ensure the dry step was performed with a genuinely dry probe; immerse it correctly; remove bubbles; and use uncontaminated solution. Verify that the documented K1.0 commands are appropriate for your probe. Wait for stability rather than stopping calibration at the first unexpected reading.

Readings are noisy, especially after expansion

The design provides electrically isolated pH, conductivity and AUX sensor ports to reduce interference in electrochemical measurements. Check damaged or long probe cables, grounding, nearby pumps, motors or switching supplies, bubbles, and sensor placement. When adding EZO devices, use I2C mode and ensure each device has a unique address; two devices sharing an address can conflict. The datasheet lists common defaults including pH 99 (0x63), EC 100 (0x64), RTD 102 (0x66), DO 97 (0x61), ORP 98 (0x62) and PMP 103 (0x67).

Adding an AUX sensor or dosing pump

The AUX port can accept an additional sensor, and the terminal block can be used for a dosing pump. Atlas identifies the EZO-PMP Advanced Kit as the simplest pump-expansion route; a standalone EZO-PMP requires additional manual configuration. The documented sensor enable states are LOW for pH, conductivity and AUX, and HIGH for temperature. Terminal-block Port 5 has no enable pin and cannot be switched off using that mechanism.

The kit operates in I2C mode only. Atlas notes that components may default to UART when added, so switch compatible devices to I2C and assign unique addresses. Before letting a pump dose unattended, independently validate thresholds, maximum run time or dose volume, plumbing direction, chemical compatibility and failure behavior. Monitoring capability alone is not a dosing safety system.

Is the kit a good fit?

The full kit makes sense if you need ongoing remote pH, EC and temperature monitoring, want an integrated assembled system, and are prepared to calibrate and maintain probes. It is less attractive if you only need occasional spot checks, expect a consumer-style controller with no maintenance, lack dependable 5 V power or Wi‑Fi, or need equipment that can withstand immersion, flooding or heavy spray.

Atlas listed the full Wi‑Fi Hydroponics Kit at $644.99 and the Bare-Bones version at $224.99 on August 18, 2026. These are observed prices, not guaranteed quotes; probe selection, shipping, tax and vendor changes may affect the total. The bare-bones model is for experienced buyers who already have compatible sensing hardware or plan to supply it—not an equivalent ready-to-measure package. The official listing has current options.

A DIY ESP32 build with individual EZO circuits can offer more control or reduce initial cost, but you take on wiring, enclosure and power decisions, isolation, I2C addressing, firmware, calibration and cloud integration. Atlas’s EZO I2C library supports custom integration, but a DIY build is not equivalent to the assembled kit. Other Atlas monitoring kits, including the Wi‑Fi Pool Kit and Industrial Monitoring Kit, target different configurations and use cases; compare probes and measurement needs rather than treating them as direct substitutes.
