Verdict: The Aqara Presence Sensor FP2 remains one of the most capable room-presence sensors because a single wired unit can divide a room into up to 30 virtual zones and track stationary occupants. That makes it genuinely useful for zone-specific lighting, HVAC, and security automations. It is less compelling for simple room occupancy, where cheaper or battery-powered sensors are easier to install.
The FP2 detects people who are sitting or lying still, unlike a conventional PIR motion sensor that may eventually report an occupied room as empty when its occupant stops moving. Its trade-offs are permanent USB power, 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi, Aqara Home setup, careful placement, and uneven feature support across smart-home platforms.
What the Aqara FP2 does
The FP2 is a wired 60–64 GHz millimeter-wave radar presence sensor. It estimates whether people are in a room and where they are within a configured map. Aqara lists a maximum range of 15 metres and coverage of approximately 40 square metres (430 square feet), although usable coverage depends on the room, mounting angle, furniture, walls, and reflective surfaces. It connects over 2.4-GHz 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi and includes Bluetooth 4.2. It does not need an Aqara hub for ordinary setup and operation, but it is not a self-contained local USB sensor: you still need Aqara Home for initial configuration, Wi-Fi, and a continuous USB-C power connection. Aqara specifies 5 V/1 A power, so “wireless” describes the network connection, not the power arrangement.

Motion, presence, zones, and targets
These terms describe different capabilities:
- Motion detection: reports activity when someone moves.
- Presence detection: attempts to keep reporting an occupant even when that person is reading, watching television, working, or lying still.
- Zone detection: places estimated occupancy within a software-defined area of the room map.
- Target tracking: attempts to maintain separate positions for multiple people.
A PIR sensor is often excellent for a hallway or quick light trigger, but it can turn lights off while someone is quietly showering, watching television, or working at a desk. The FP2’s practical advantage is that it can combine continued presence detection with location. For example, a “desk occupied” zone can control a task light while a “sofa occupied” zone controls a different scene.
This is spatial estimation, not camera-quality identification. The FP2 does not know who a person is, and radar does not guarantee perfect classification when targets overlap, disappear behind furniture, or move near reflective objects.
The FP2’s defining feature: one sensor, many room zones
Aqara says the FP2 builds a map from 320 cells and supports up to 30 configurable zones. It can track up to five targets, although Aqara recommends no more than three for best results. The zones are software-defined regions from one radar sensor; they are not separate physical sensors.
That distinction matters because zone count is the reason to pay for an FP2. Useful examples include:
- Living room: sofa, desk, doorway, and play-area zones.
- Bedroom: bed, doorway, and dresser zones.
- Kitchen: sink, counter, and dining-table zones.
With those zones exposed to an automation platform, you can turn on lights near an occupied desk without illuminating the whole room, delay a wake-up scene when someone remains in bed, or send an alert when presence appears in a normally empty area.
Do not interpret “up to 30 zones” as a guarantee that every small region will be equally reliable. A room map can be within the advertised range while furniture, geometry, and interference make some areas less dependable than others.
Installation and setup
The official Aqara Home setup route is:
- Connect the FP2 with the supplied USB-C-to-USB-A cable.
- Open Aqara Home and select Home.
- Tap + in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Add accessory.
- Search for Presence Sensor FP2.
- Follow the pairing instructions.
- Set the room map, orientation, and installation position.
- Draw and name zones, then configure automations.
The configuration work is more important than the pairing process. Fix the sensor in its final position before mapping it, match the map orientation to the actual room, and mark furniture or other non-target areas as interference zones where the app allows. Test both occupied and empty states before connecting the sensor to important lighting, heating, cooling, or security routines.

Aqara supports wall and ceiling mounting and allows the map to be rotated by 45 degrees to help reduce dead zones. A corner shelf may be needed for corner placement. Wall mounting can provide a useful horizontal view for room zoning; ceiling mounting is relevant to fall-detection mode. Neither position is universally best.
Keep the sensor away from direct heat sources and avoid moving it after calibration. Test rooms containing mirrors, large glass surfaces, metal appliances, ceiling fans, curtains, and moving plants. The FP2 is listed as IPX5, but that should be treated as splash resistance, not permission to submerge it or assume unrestricted outdoor use.
Reliability: what to test before trusting an automation
The FP2’s performance is installation-dependent. A useful evaluation should cover the following cases:

| Mirror or glass nearby | Whether false targets appear. |
| Fan, curtains, or plants moving | Whether motion is mistaken for presence. |
| Wi-Fi interruption | Recovery behavior and whether events resume correctly. |
| Sensor moved after setup | Whether the map becomes inaccurate or requires recalibration. |
| Long absence | How quickly the system reports an empty room. |
Potential false-presence causes include mirrors, large glass surfaces, reflective appliances, moving curtains or plants, fans, incorrectly configured interference areas, sensor movement, and targets near the edge of the map. False absence can result from a poor angle, excessive distance, furniture blocking the target, an incorrect orientation, network interruptions, or a person sitting outside the configured map.

Aqara’s maximum of five targets should therefore be read as a stated capability, not a promise of perfect identity persistence in every busy room. Community reports also suggest that room geometry, firmware, and integration method can affect reliability; those reports are useful failure cases, but they are not controlled failure-rate data.
Smart-home compatibility and hub requirements
Aqara lists compatibility with Aqara Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and IFTTT. It also says the FP2 can expose multiple sensors to HomeKit, Home Assistant, Alexa, and Google Home. The exact entities, controls, update behavior, and automation options can differ by platform. Compatibility does not mean feature parity.
Aqara Home
Aqara Home is required for setup and room-map configuration. Aqara says local automation requires an Aqara hub with Wi-Fi local-automation support and version 3.5.0 or above. That is separate from the statement that no hub is required for ordinary operation.

Apple Home
The FP2 is attractive for HomeKit users who want zone-derived occupancy sensors available for scenes and automations. Configure the map and zones in Aqara Home first, then confirm which zones appear in Apple Home and how they can be used in the intended automation.
Alexa and Google Home
The FP2 can expose multiple sensors, but the voice-assistant apps may present fewer controls than Aqara Home. Confirm that the specific zone states needed for a routine are available before designing the automation around them.
Home Assistant
“Works with Home Assistant” is not one universal experience. The intended setup may use HomeKit Device, Aqara cloud, Matter if applicable, or a third-party integration. Check the current firmware and integration path for the exact installation. Do not assume that all zones and advanced controls will be available locally or with identical update behavior.
Useful automation ideas
- Keep bathroom lighting on while a person remains in the shower area.
- Turn on only the lights near an occupied sofa, desk, or kitchen counter.
- Use a bed zone to avoid triggering a whole-house wake-up routine when another occupant gets up.
- Turn off lighting only after the room is genuinely empty, rather than after a short period without motion.
- Send a notification when presence appears in a normally empty room or security zone.
- Adjust ventilation or climate settings according to room occupancy.
Use conservative absence delays for lights and HVAC. A brief radar dropout should not plunge a room into darkness or repeatedly switch climate equipment. Test the timing in the ecosystem that will actually run the automation, not only in Aqara Home.
Fall detection is not a medical safety system
The FP2 includes a fall-detection mode, but it should not be the main reason to buy the device. Aqara recommends ceiling mounting for this mode and says the results are for reference only. The manual warns that slow or gradual falls, including falls against a wall, may be missed, while rapidly falling or shaking objects may produce false alerts.

Aqara product documentation also indicates that most zone-positioning and presence features may be unavailable or changed in fall-detection mode. Never use the FP2 as a replacement for a medical alert device, caregiver monitoring, emergency response service, or clinical fall detector.

Aqara markets wearable-free sleep monitoring and says the FP2 can track respiration and heart rate. Its FAQ limits accurate measurement to static conditions and says the feature is unsuitable during movement. Availability and historical presentation may depend on region, app version, mode, and Aqara hardware.

These are health-related estimates, not medical measurements. Treat the feature as an optional smart-home experiment, not a diagnostic tool or a basis for medical decisions. Buyers should also establish whether enabling sleep monitoring affects zone or presence behavior in their specific setup.
FP2 versus the cheaper alternatives

The FP300 is rated by Aqara for up to three years on Zigbee or two years on Thread under stated conditions, with a listed detection range of up to six metres and a 120-degree field of view. It is not a documented replacement for the FP2’s 30-zone room map.
The FP2’s premium is therefore for spatial intelligence, not simply for detecting presence. If you need one occupied/empty signal for a bathroom, hallway, or bedroom, the FP1E, FP300, or a cheaper single-zone sensor is likely better value. If you want “turn on the desk lamp when I sit at the desk, but not the sofa lamp,” the FP2 has a clear reason to exist.
Privacy and local-operation questions
The FP2 requires Aqara Home for setup, but the supplied documentation does not establish exactly what data is transmitted after setup or which functions continue when internet access is blocked. Do not assume either that it is completely local or that it continuously sends room data to the cloud without verifying the current technical documentation or testing the network behavior.
Privacy-conscious buyers should establish:
- Whether the sensor continues reporting when internet access is blocked.
- Which functions remain available locally.
- Whether HomeKit or Home Assistant receives zone data directly.
- Whether maps, occupancy events, or health-related data are stored remotely.
- What account is required and what happens if Aqara’s service is unavailable.
Who should buy the FP2?
- Buy it if you need several zones from one sensor, want stationary-presence detection, use Aqara, Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, or Home Assistant, can provide permanent USB power, and are willing to tune placement and mapping.
- Skip it if you need battery power, want a simple maintenance-free detector, require a completely local vendor-independent setup, only need single-zone presence, cannot route a USB cable, or expect dependable medical-grade fall detection.
For Apple Home users, the FP2 is most worthwhile when multiple room zones will drive separate scenes. For Aqara users, it offers the most detailed spatial capability in this comparison. For Home Assistant users, verify the integration path and local behavior before buying. For bathroom automation, it can solve the classic PIR problem of lights turning off while someone is still, but a cheaper sensor may be sufficient if zone positioning is irrelevant. For a large living room, careful mounting and interference testing are essential. For elder-care scenarios, use it only as a supplementary occupancy signal, never as the sole safety measure.
