Apple has reportedly explored a smart video doorbell that could recognize residents and potentially unlock a compatible smart lock, but it has not announced the product. As of August 18, 2026, there is no confirmed release date, price, final feature list or Apple product page. The report describes an early-stage idea—not a doorbell you can count on arriving in 2026.
What the report actually said
On December 22, 2024, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple was considering a Ring-like video doorbell with advanced facial recognition. The concept could identify residents at the front door and potentially work with a compatible smart lock to unlock the home. The project was described as being in its early stages; Apple might also work with a lock maker or offer the technology through a partner rather than sell an Apple-branded doorbell. 9to5Mac’s summary of the report and The Information’s report describe the original claim.
“Face ID” is shorthand for the reported capability, not a confirmed product name or specification. The reporting does not establish that the device would use the same hardware as iPhone Face ID, or that Apple would call the feature Face ID.

The reported idea combines two different functions: identifying a person and deciding whether that person should be allowed inside. In a possible implementation, the doorbell detects someone, compares their face with approved household profiles, and then either sends a personalized alert or asks a compatible lock to unlock. That sequence is an interpretation of the report, not a confirmed Apple design.

- Recognition for notifications: a camera identifies a household member and labels or personalizes an alert.
- Recognition for entry: a system uses the match as a condition for unlocking a smart lock. This is the more consequential part of the rumor, and the least defined.
Apple has not disclosed how such a system would handle uncertain matches, photos or video replays, lookalikes, children, guests, temporary access, or a failed network connection. It is also unknown whether a match alone would unlock the door or whether the user would need to confirm on an iPhone or Apple Watch, use Home Key, or enter a code. A physical key or keypad fallback, a record of unlock events, and an easy way to disable automatic unlocking would matter for a security product of this kind.

The original report suggested no launch before the end of 2025, with later summaries describing 2026 as the earliest possible timing. That was an estimate, not an Apple release commitment. Later reporting has discussed Apple’s wider security plans—including cameras or a small sensor—and says a Face ID doorbell might be part of that lineup. It does not confirm that the doorbell entered production or is launching imminently. The later reporting should not be read as an announcement of this specific product.

How it fits Apple’s wider smart-home plans
Reports about the doorbell sit alongside a broader possible smart-home push involving a central hub, more capable Siri, indoor cameras or sensors, and automations based on who is home. A camera that recognizes someone in a room and changes lighting or music would be a different product and use case from a front-door camera authorizing entry. Bloomberg coverage has also discussed Apple’s broader smart-home plans, but that does not confirm a doorbell launch. Bloomberg Law’s report provides context on the wider push.

Face recognition in current Apple-compatible doorbells is different
Compatible cameras can already offer face recognition or HomeKit Secure Video features, but that does not make them Apple doorbells or give them the rumored automatic lock authorization. For example, Aqara advertises local AI face recognition on the G4, and Logitech offers face recognition with the Circle View Doorbell. Those are vendor products and features; neither is an Apple-branded Face ID system. See Aqara’s G4 details and Logitech’s Circle View page.
Nor does the phrase “Apple privacy” answer practical questions that remain open: where facial data would be processed or retained, who could access it, how a household member could opt out, and what happens if an account, home hub, power supply or lock fails. The rumor does not provide those design details.

HomeKit-compatible doorbells you can buy now
These are third-party products, not substitutes for a confirmed Apple doorbell. Prices below are vendor-page price signals in the US and can change; check current availability and installation requirements before buying.

Apple Home, HomeKit Secure Video, a manufacturer’s own face recognition and Home Key are not interchangeable. For example, a compatible HomeKit camera may send notifications or store recordings through HomeKit Secure Video, while a Home Key lock supports a separate entry method. Aqara lists its U400, U300 and U200 locks as Home Key products, but that does not establish compatibility with Apple’s rumored doorbell. See Aqara’s Apple Home information.

Should you wait or buy now?
- Wait if Apple-branded hardware is essential and you are willing to wait without a dependable timeline. Treat any 2026 date as speculation, not a buying plan.
- Buy now if you need a working doorbell and are comfortable with third-party hardware. Choose based on wiring, budget, app preferences and the specific HomeKit features you need.
- Consider the G4 if battery flexibility and a lower listed price matter; consider the wired G400 if its advertised video specifications suit your installation.
- Consider Logitech if you want a wired doorbell built around HomeKit Secure Video and your existing transformer meets its requirements.
- Do not buy an existing model expecting rumored automatic unlocking. None of these products establishes that Apple will deliver that feature, or that it will work with a particular lock.
If a future camera can unlock a door, evaluate it as an access-control device, not just a video camera: look for clear lock compatibility, fallback entry, outage behavior, access logs, privacy controls and a way to prevent mistaken matches from opening the door. Apple has not yet published those answers for the rumored product.
