“We Need to Clear the Air” is the second part of the title of a 2012 RenewEconomy commentary by Ketan Joshi. It argues that claims of a distinct illness caused by wind turbines were being amplified by anti-wind campaigning and political debate. The piece is useful as a record of that Australian controversy, but it is advocacy-oriented—not a neutral scientific review or a current guide to wind-farm health evidence.
What the article is about
Published on August 14, 2012, “Anti-wind turbine syndrome: We need to clear the air” addresses claims that living near wind turbines can cause a cluster of health problems, often called “wind turbine syndrome.” Joshi’s commentary focuses primarily on Australian public and planning debates, including those in New South Wales and Victoria.
Its central argument is that health fears were being circulated through anecdote, selective interpretations of research, inflammatory rhetoric and repeated media or activist claims, with consequences for wind-energy debate and planning. That is the author’s argument, not a finding established by the article itself.

What “wind turbine syndrome” claims
The term is associated with Nina Pierpont’s 2009 book and describes a proposed set of symptoms attributed by some opponents of wind projects to turbine noise, especially infrasound or low-frequency sound. Reports have included sleep disturbance, headaches, dizziness, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, learning problems and ringing in the ears. These are reported symptoms; their existence does not, by itself, establish a shared disease or show that turbine exposure caused them.

Infrasound generally means sound below about 20 hertz, a range below ordinary human hearing. Turbines, machinery and natural sources can produce it. But detecting a sound, or noting that other sources produce it too, does not answer the health question. Exposure level, frequency, duration and the quality of evidence about effects all matter. “Inaudible” does not automatically mean harmless, just as the presence of infrasound does not establish harm.
What the cited evidence does—and does not—support
The evidence summaries available here draw a distinction between reports and demonstrated causation. A public-health summary quoted in an Ontario legislative record noted anecdotal complaints but said scientific evidence had not demonstrated a causal association between wind-turbine noise and adverse health effects at the time of that review. A Science.gov evidence summary similarly says the available evidence it reviews does not indicate that turbine infrasound, low-frequency noise, electromagnetic fields or shadow flicker are likely to affect human health, while acknowledging that audible noise can annoy some people.

Those conclusions do not mean that residents’ symptoms are imaginary, that every sound exposure is identical, or that harm is impossible under every circumstance. They mean the cited reviews do not establish the broad causal syndrome attributed to turbine infrasound. Annoyance and sleep disturbance can be consequential even when a specific disease mechanism has not been demonstrated. Evidence about one turbine, location or study also cannot automatically settle every local case.
The Ontario record and Science.gov summary are evidence snapshots, not a complete review of all research published since 2012. They support a careful, limited conclusion—not a claim that the subject has been definitively resolved for every technology, exposure or population.

The commentary’s perspective
Joshi’s employment affiliation is relevant context: the article identified him at publication as a data analyst at Infigen Energy, a wind-energy company. It also described his background in neuroscience and psychology. That connection does not by itself disprove his argument, but it makes the piece industry-adjacent commentary rather than independent public-health assessment. Readers should weigh its advocacy and rhetoric accordingly, and check scientific claims against evidence reviews rather than treating the article as the evidence.
Joshi portrays some anti-wind campaigns as combining health claims with hostility to the wind industry, selective research and emotionally charged language. His focus on rhetoric is part of the piece’s argument; it should not be mistaken for proof that every critic acted in bad faith. Nor should criticism of unsupported health mechanisms be used to dismiss residents’ concerns or their experience of symptoms.

Health claims are not the only siting issue
Even if the claimed infrasound syndrome is not established, that does not settle whether a particular project is well sited or well managed. Audible noise, visual and landscape effects, shadow flicker, construction disruption, land-use and property disputes, consultation, monitoring, compliance, and how costs and benefits are distributed can all be legitimate local concerns.
Good project decisions require attention to those issues as well as to health evidence. Rejecting an unsupported causal claim does not make every wind project acceptable; climate or energy benefits do not excuse inadequate consultation, weak monitoring or failure to meet applicable rules. The article discusses Australian planning disputes as they stood in 2012. Its claims about policy consequences are historical arguments, not a description of current planning law in Australia—or elsewhere.

How to read it today
The commentary remains useful for understanding how health fears, campaign messaging, media repetition and planning politics interacted in an Australian wind-energy dispute. Its call to distinguish evidence from rhetoric is valuable. But its own forceful language and author’s industry affiliation are reasons to read it critically, and its date matters: it cannot, on its own, establish the current scientific consensus or current planning requirements.
The most defensible takeaway is narrow: the cited reviews do not establish turbine infrasound as the cause of a distinct “wind turbine syndrome,” while audible noise and annoyance remain real considerations. That conclusion leaves room to take people seriously, assess local conditions carefully and avoid treating either campaign claims or an industry-adjacent commentary as a substitute for a full evidence review.
