To use feng shui in a house, choose one bagua method, map it consistently onto a floor plan, and treat its sectors and design principles as traditional guides—not guarantees of wealth, health, or relationship outcomes. You can start with reversible changes such as clearing pathways, adjusting furniture, and improving lighting; no special compass is needed unless you choose a compass-based method.
1. Understand what feng shui can—and cannot—tell you
Feng shui is a traditional way of relating people and built spaces through ideas such as qi, yin-yang, the Five Elements, trigrams, and environmental orientation. A bagua is an eight-section map used to examine a room or building.
These ideas can provide a framework for thinking about layout, movement, balance, and how a space feels to use. They should not be treated as measured predictions: the sources for this guide provide no quantitative evidence establishing guaranteed improvements in wealth, health, or relationships.
2. Choose one bagua method before you map
Two approaches appear in feng shui guidance: a compass-direction overlay and a simplified entrance-based overlay. They use different ways to position the map. Choose one before assigning areas; combining their placements can give you contradictory results.

The choice depends on the school or guide you are following, not on a universal rule that every feng shui house must face one particular direction. If you use the compass-based approach, orient the floor plan with the compass directions; if you use the entrance-based approach, follow that method’s entry reference instead. Do not switch methods midway through your assessment.
3. Map the house or room on a floor plan
A measured plan is helpful, but a reasonably accurate sketch is enough for a first pass. Include the outline of the space, doors, windows, and major fixed features. The goal is to make your placement decisions repeatable, not to create a construction drawing.

- Record the actual outline. Sketch the whole house or the room you are assessing, including extensions, recesses, and missing corners.
- Mark entrances and windows. Note the main entrance and the openings that affect daylight and movement.
- Find the center. Estimate the center of the plan or room you are mapping and mark it clearly.
- Orient the plan if using the compass method. Establish the compass directions before placing the bagua. An ordinary compass can help with basic orientation; a feng shui or Luo Pan compass is optional for readers following a compass-based approach.
- Place one bagua consistently. Align it according to the method you chose, then keep that convention for the whole assessment.
A floor-plan guide describes using a command-position line, finding the center, and laying the bagua over the plan. If your chosen guide uses that procedure, follow its definitions rather than mixing in placement rules from a different method.
4. What are the eight areas of a feng shui home?
The eight sectors are traditional correspondences, not promises that a particular room or object will produce a specific life outcome. The Feng Shui Institute International lists these associated areas:

Use the names as prompts for reflection when reviewing a space. Their placement on your plan depends on which bagua method you have chosen; do not assume that a label belongs to a compass direction unless the method you are following says so.
5. Use the Five Elements as design cues
The Five Elements are water, wood, fire, earth, and metal. Feng shui guidance describes generating and controlling cycles among them. For a practical home review, treat element associations as symbolic design cues rather than a formula that must be followed rigidly.

- Water: Consider a water reference, such as an image or object, if it suits the room and is safe to maintain.
- Wood: A plant or wooden material can serve as a wood cue; choose plants that suit the available light and your ability to care for them.
- Fire: Lighting or a fire-associated color can be a symbolic cue. Use safe lighting and follow ordinary electrical and fire-safety practices.
- Earth: Earth-associated colors, shapes, or materials can add a grounded visual note.
- Metal: Metal finishes or objects can provide a metal cue without requiring a major renovation.
Start with what is already in the room. A small change in color, material, shape, or lighting is easier to assess than buying objects to fill every sector, and ordinary function and safety should determine whether a change stays.
6. Arrange the bed, desk, or sofa with command position in mind
Command position is a traditional feng shui design heuristic. In practical terms, it means arranging important furniture so you can orient toward the room and its entry, feel that the position has support, and move through the space without obstruction.

- Bed: Look for a position that gives you a clear sense of the room and entry while leaving comfortable routes around the bed. Do not sacrifice safe access, ventilation, or the room’s practical layout to force a placement.
- Desk: If the room allows, try a position from which you can see the entry without sitting directly in its path. Keep the work area and circulation routes usable.
- Sofa: Consider whether the main seat feels supported and lets people see and enter the room comfortably. Avoid blocking doors, windows, or the natural walking route.
There is no single placement that works for every floor plan. Treat these as options to test in the actual room, alongside comfort, access, and safety.
7. Read entrances, circulation, and irregular floor plans carefully
Before interpreting sectors, observe how people actually use the home. Look at the main entrance, windows, pathways, clutter, and the proportions of each room. A map cannot make a cramped route, blocked door, or poorly lit work area function well.
Extensions, missing areas, and non-rectangular homes complicate bagua overlays. Record the real outline first, then use one consistent school or method to decide how it applies. If the boundary makes the overlay unclear, avoid pretending the plan is a perfect rectangle or assigning a definitive sector by guesswork; prioritize a layout that works in practice.

8. Make reversible changes and assess the result
Start with low-cost adjustments before considering structural work. Change one or two things at a time so you can tell whether the space has become more useful and comfortable.
- Remove clutter that obstructs an entrance or everyday route.
- Improve lighting where a task or passage is hard to use.
- Try a different furniture arrangement while preserving clear circulation.
- Use a modest color, material, plant, or other element cue only when it fits the room.
Compare possible arrangements using orientation, circulation, balance of elements, personal comfort, and practical safety. Feng shui can complement ordinary design judgment; it does not replace building, electrical, or accessibility advice.
