In April 2021, Amazon expanded Key In-Garage Grocery Delivery to more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns. The service let eligible Prime members receive qualifying Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market orders inside a connected garage instead of on the porch.
That announcement was historical, not a new 2026 launch. Amazon’s grocery business has since changed, so current availability must be confirmed for the exact address, account, garage system, and order.
What Amazon Key In-Garage Grocery Delivery did
Amazon Key was a delivery-access service, not a grocery retailer and not a garage-door opener. When an eligible order was selected for In-Garage Delivery, the driver received temporary authorization to open the customer’s connected garage, place the groceries inside, and close the door.

This is different from Key In-Home Delivery, which involved entry into a home, and different from a smart-garage controller, which was the customer’s hardware and app connection.

The intended benefit was to reduce exposure to porch theft, weather, and public view. It could also help protect groceries from rain, snow, heat, or direct sunlight while the customer was away. Amazon describes the service in its Key delivery explainer.
Inside a garage does not mean refrigerated. A typical garage is ordinary ambient storage, so meat, dairy, frozen food, and other perishables still need prompt retrieval and proper refrigeration or freezing.
How large was the 2021 expansion?
Amazon initially launched Key In-Garage Grocery Delivery in five cities in November 2020. In April 2021, it announced expansion to more than 5,000 U.S. cities and towns and said the service was available to millions of eligible Prime members. The announcement covered Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market grocery deliveries.
“More than 5,000 cities and towns” did not mean every household in those communities qualified. Availability depended on the delivery address, local grocery coverage, Prime eligibility, compatible garage equipment, and whether the particular order offered the Key option at checkout. What customers needed
- An eligible Prime account: Amazon positioned In-Garage Delivery as a Prime benefit.
- An eligible address: The home had to be in an area served by the applicable Amazon grocery service.
- A supported garage system: Amazon identified myQ, Aladdin Connect, and OHD Anywhere as supported connected-garage platforms.
- A compatible order: The grocery order and delivery window had to offer In-Garage Delivery at checkout.
- An operational garage: The door, controller, power, internet connection, and safety sensors had to work when the driver arrived.
For customers without an integrated system, Amazon listed retrofit options including the myQ Smart Garage Control and Aladdin Connect Retrofit Kit. Product-family compatibility is not a guarantee that a specific opener, account, address, or order qualifies.
Before buying hardware, check the official compatibility information: myQ Smart Garage Control, Aladdin Connect, and OHD Anywhere.

How to set up In-Garage Delivery
- Install or confirm a compatible connected-garage system.
- Connect the garage to Amazon Key in the Amazon app.
- Turn on the In-Garage Delivery preference.
- Shop for an eligible Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods order.
- Select In-Garage Delivery at checkout when it appears.
Amazon says delivery preferences can be changed at checkout or in the app’s Amazon Key settings. Menu names can vary by app version, device, account, and address. If the Key setting or checkout option is missing, that may indicate an eligibility or service-availability issue rather than a hardware fault.
What happens during delivery?
- The driver arrives with an eligible order.
- Amazon Key authorizes garage access.
- The garage door opens.
- The driver places the order inside.
- The driver closes the door.
- The customer receives the normal order-status and delivery notifications available for that order.
The driver is authorized to access the garage for the delivery; that does not mean the driver is authorized to enter the home. For safety, keep any interior door from the garage closed and locked.
When is it useful?
Key delivery can be a good fit for households that:
- Regularly receive groceries while nobody is home.
- Live in an area with porch theft or severe weather.
- Want packages hidden from public view.
- Already have a compatible smart-garage system.
- Have a clear, dry, safe area inside the garage for delivery.
- Are comfortable giving an Amazon-authorized driver temporary garage access.
Amazon also describes Amazon Day with Key Delivery, which can combine eligible deliveries for a selected recurring day and place them inside the garage.
Risks and limitations to consider
It is not cold storage
A garage may be cooler than a sunny porch, but it is not a refrigerator or freezer. Plan to retrieve perishables promptly. Inspect food when you arrive and use Amazon’s order-support process for items that are warm, spoiled, damaged, or otherwise unsafe.
The garage must be safe to enter
Clear vehicles, tools, boxes, chemicals, cords, and other trip hazards from the driver’s path. Keep pets and children away during the delivery window. Do not disable the garage door’s safety mechanisms just to make Key work.

Smart-home dependencies can fail
The feature depends on the controller, opener, power, Wi-Fi, internet service, cloud integration, and door sensors. A dead controller battery, blocked door, opener fault, Wi-Fi outage, or service outage can prevent normal access.
Privacy and security are household decisions
In-Garage Delivery reduces the time that packages are exposed outside, but it does not guarantee that theft or unauthorized access is impossible. Do not leave valuables or sensitive documents visible. Review the connected-garage account’s security and notification settings, and revoke the Amazon connection if you stop using the service.
What to do when the feature does not work
The Key option is missing
- Confirm that the delivery address is correct.
- Check whether Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods delivery is available at the address.
- Review Amazon Key settings and confirm that the garage is linked.
- Verify that the controller is online.
- Try another eligible delivery window.
- Contact Amazon customer service if the garage is connected but the option remains unavailable.
Other possible causes include an ineligible Prime account, an order type that does not support the feature, a temporary inventory limitation, or an address outside the applicable service area.
The garage door will not open
Check power, Wi-Fi, the controller battery, the opener, door sensors, and physical obstructions. If the garage is blocked or a safety issue is present, the driver may not be able to complete an in-garage delivery. Do not bypass safety sensors or other protective equipment.
The driver leaves the groceries outside
Check the order status, delivery photo, and notifications first. The driver may have been unable to obtain access, found the garage blocked, encountered a safety issue, or been handling an order that was not actually eligible for Key delivery. Contact Amazon support if the delivery was not completed according to the selected preference.
The food arrives warm or damaged
Move food to appropriate refrigeration or freezing as soon as possible, assess whether it is safe to use, and report the problem through the order’s support, refund, or replacement process. In-garage placement limits outdoor exposure; it does not create a cold-chain guarantee.

Is Amazon Key still relevant in 2026?
Yes, the concept remains relevant for eligible homes, but the 2021 expansion should not be treated as a current nationwide availability guarantee. Amazon’s current Key explainer still describes connected-garage delivery and the supported platforms, while the exact 2021 grocery footprint should be checked at the address level.

Amazon says it closed Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh physical stores in January 2026, converted various locations into Whole Foods Market stores, and is focusing more heavily on online grocery delivery and Whole Foods expansion. Its current grocery guide describes perishable-grocery Same-Day Delivery in more than 2,300 U.S. cities and towns, with further expansion planned during 2026. That figure describes current grocery delivery coverage, not necessarily the availability of Key In-Garage Delivery.
Current grocery fees and programs vary by service and location. Amazon’s grocery guide lists, as general signals, free Same-Day Delivery with Prime on orders over $25 in most areas, a $2.99 fee for smaller Prime orders, and a $12.99 fee for non-Prime orders. It also lists Whole Foods delivery at $9.95 for Prime customers and $13.95 for non-Prime customers under the applicable arrangement. Amazon and Whole Foods separately describe an optional grocery-delivery subscription at $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, with a lower price for qualifying Prime Access members. Minimums, participating stores, ZIP codes, and fees can change.

Alternatives to garage delivery

Should you enable it?
Confirm address eligibility before spending money on a controller or changing a grocery subscription. Key is most compelling when a household already has compatible hardware, experiences porch theft or harsh weather, and can retrieve perishables quickly. It is a weaker choice for a cluttered or detached garage, unreliable internet, valuable items stored in the delivery path, strict temperature-control needs, or anyone uncomfortable with remote access at the home’s perimeter.
Amazon’s 2021 expansion made in-garage grocery delivery available to eligible Prime members in more than 5,000 U.S. communities. The practical decision in 2026 is narrower: does the exact address, grocery order, garage system, and household routine support it safely and conveniently?
