Amazon ended Astro for Business on September 25, 2024, less than a year after launching the mobile security robot in the United States. The device originally cost $2,349.99, and Amazon said it was redirecting resources toward home robotics. Businesses affected by the shutdown were offered hardware refunds, refunds for unused prepaid Astro Secure service, a $300 replacement credit, and recycling support.
What Amazon discontinued
The shutdown applied to Astro for Business, not necessarily to all Astro development. Amazon described Astro for Business as a mobile security solution for small and medium-sized businesses, while saying it would focus its robotics work on “the best in-home robot.”
That distinction matters. Astro began as a home robot announced in 2021. Astro for Business, launched in the United States on November 15, 2023, added business-security features and service plans. Astro Secure provided features such as scheduled and custom patrol routes, while Virtual Security Guard was a separate Ring-linked professional-monitoring service.

Amazon announced the business wind-down on July 3, 2024. Business units were scheduled to stop functioning on September 25, 2024. Amazon did not publish sales, retention, revenue, hardware-failure, or profitability figures, so claims that poor sales definitively caused the shutdown remain speculation.

What Astro for Business was designed to do
Amazon marketed the robot as a mobile layer of workplace security for spaces of up to 5,000 square feet. It was intended to detect and observe activity rather than replace emergency services, trained security personnel, or a complete alarm system.
- Autonomous patrols through a business premises.
- Scheduled and custom patrol routes through Astro Secure.
- Live video viewing through the Astro app.
- Remote control and two-way talk.
- A periscope camera for elevated views.
- Motion and security alerts.
- Integration with Ring security services.
- Optional professional monitoring through Virtual Security Guard.
- Privacy settings that could disable microphones, cameras, or motion.
- Out-of-bounds zones that restricted where the robot could travel.

The launch price was not simply the cost of a camera or a one-time appliance. The business model combined hardware with cloud and security subscriptions.

After the trial period, Ring Protect Pro and Astro Secure would have represented $80 per month before taxes and other terms. Adding Virtual Security Guard would have brought the recurring total to $179 per month. Those figures are a historical launch illustration, not a current offer. The first-year total depended on subscription selection, trial eligibility, taxes, and billing terms.
What happened to customers
Amazon’s reported customer communication offered several remedies:
- A full refund of the Astro for Business purchase price.
- A refund for unused prepaid Astro Secure fees.
- No further Astro Secure charges after the discontinuation announcement.
- A $300 credit toward a replacement workplace-security solution.
- Recycling support, including covered shipping.
Amazon also said personal data on the device would be deleted when service ended. Previously recorded patrol or investigation videos in the Ring app remained available according to the applicable video-storage period or Ring Protect subscription. That is narrower than saying that every Amazon- or Ring-related cloud record was erased.

Could businesses convert the robot for home use?
No supported conversion path was announced. Amazon did not tell business customers to install different software, use the robot offline, or transform Astro for Business into the consumer model. Instead, customers were directed toward recycling, while business users were invited to request access to a separate home Astro through Amazon’s Day 1 Editions program.
Because the product depended on Amazon’s controlled hardware, software, cloud services, and subscriptions, unsupported firmware or offline-use theories should not be treated as an official reuse option.
What happened to the home Astro?
Amazon’s original home Astro announcement described autonomous navigation, home monitoring, remote live views, person-recognition alerts, pet-related features, Alexa functions, optional Ring integration, and a cargo bin rated for up to 4.4 pounds.
The 2021 announcement listed a $1,449.99 price, a $999.99 introductory Day 1 Editions price, and a six-month Ring Protect Pro trial. Those were launch figures. The available official material does not establish that Astro is currently a generally available retail product or provide a current 2026 price. Amazon’s stated direction was continued focus on in-home robotics, not a confirmed current retail timetable.

Why the shutdown matters to construction and commercial buyers
A mobile security robot sounds attractive for construction offices, warehouses, developments, and commercial sites, but its usefulness depends on more than cameras and autonomy. It must navigate changing layouts, temporary barriers, uneven thresholds, people, equipment, lighting changes, charging stations, Wi-Fi coverage, and cloud services.
Construction environments are especially demanding. A robot designed for an indoor office may not be suitable for mud, dust, rain, gravel, ramps, open perimeters, loading areas, or sites without reliable power and connectivity. A device that detects an intruder also cannot necessarily intervene, identify a crime with certainty, or summon the correct responder.
The Astro shutdown illustrates a broader risk: connected security hardware can lose much of its value when the vendor ends the supporting service. The purchase decision therefore needs to cover the service lifecycle, not just the robot’s specifications.

There is no direct one-for-one replacement for Astro for Business. The appropriate choice depends on the site and the response model.

Relevant vendor information is available from Cobalt, Knightscope, and SMP Robotics. These are enterprise offerings; availability, site suitability, contracts, and pricing require direct confirmation.
Security-robot buying checklist
Before committing to any connected security robot, a business should document:
- Operating environment: Indoor or outdoor use, weather, terrain, thresholds, ramps, elevators, doors, lighting, dust, and changing site layouts.
- Coverage: Patrol range, battery duration, docking reliability, recovery after obstruction, and blind spots.
- Human response: Whether the service only detects events or supplies trained operators, escalation procedures, and verified dispatch.
- Integrations: Compatibility with cameras, access control, alarms, video management, ticketing, and emergency procedures.
- Connectivity: What happens during Wi-Fi, power, cellular, or cloud outages.
- Privacy: Camera and audio notices, employee and visitor policies, retention, biometric functions, and applicable state or local rules.
- Commercial terms: Hardware ownership, annual subscriptions, minimum orders, maintenance, termination fees, and price changes.
- Continuity protection: Data export, repair and spare-parts obligations, end-of-life notice, refunds, replacement commitments, and shutdown provisions.
- Incident handling: The response to a blocked route, suspicious person, fire alarm, loud noise, camera obstruction, or network failure.
- Fallback coverage: Fixed cameras, lighting, alarms, access controls, guards, and emergency contacts that remain effective if the robot fails.
Common failure modes to plan for
- The robot becomes trapped by furniture, carts, doors, spills, or people.
- A charging dock loses power or becomes inaccessible.
- A cloud or network outage disables live monitoring.
- The camera is too low or obstructed to provide useful evidence.
- False alerts create alert fatigue.
- The robot detects an event but cannot physically intervene.
- Two-way audio escalates a confrontation instead of resolving it.
- Employees, contractors, or visitors object to mobile cameras.
- A vendor changes subscription terms or exits the market.
- A business assumes monitoring automatically dispatches police or emergency responders when the contract does not promise that service.
What Amazon’s decision suggests about consumer robotics
Amazon’s explanation was strategic: it wanted to accelerate work on home robotics. The decision may also indicate that a specialized business-security product did not justify continued support, but Amazon did not publish the commercial evidence needed to prove that conclusion.

A consumer experiment can tolerate more uncertainty than a system used to protect employees, equipment, inventory, and an active construction site. Business buyers need dependable uptime, clear incident escalation, defined data handling, support availability, and a credible end-of-life policy.
For many small businesses, a well-designed combination of fixed cameras, access control, alarms, lighting, professional monitoring, and occasional human patrol may provide more predictable coverage than a mobile robot. Larger or specialized sites may benefit from autonomous patrols, but only after a site survey and a clear human-response plan.
Bottom line
Amazon did not simply discontinue a camera; it ended a service-dependent business-security platform. Astro for Business launched in November 2023, was withdrawn in July 2024, and stopped functioning on September 25, 2024. Customers were offered refunds and other remedies, but there was no supported conversion to the home Astro. For future security purchases, evaluate vendor continuity, response procedures, privacy, integrations, and exit terms as carefully as the robot itself.
