Amazon’s Echo Show 21 is best understood as a large shared household command center, not simply a giant smart speaker or a replacement for a premium television. Its 21.4-inch 1080p touchscreen combines Alexa, Fire TV, household widgets, video calls and a built-in Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart-home hub. That size is genuinely useful when several people need to see calendars, recipes, controls or video from across a room; it is excessive if the device will mainly sit beside one person’s bed or serve as a primary TV.
What the Echo Show 21 is
Introduced in November 2024, the Echo Show 21 is a wall-mountable or counter-positioned Echo with a 21.4-inch display. The “21” is a rounded product name; Amazon’s technical specification lists a 21.4-inch, 1,920 × 1,080 panel. It runs Fire OS, includes Alexa and built-in Fire TV, and can function as:
- a shared calendar, list and reminder board;
- a touchscreen controller for compatible smart-home devices;
- a secondary television for streaming and casual viewing;
- a video-calling and camera-monitoring screen; and
- a large Alexa assistant for a kitchen or family room.
Amazon announced a U.S. launch price of $399.99, including an Alexa Voice Remote and wall-mounting equipment. That is a historical launch price, not a verified current retail price; check the live Amazon listing before buying.

The practical benefit is visibility: a calendar, recipe or camera feed can remain readable several feet away.

These specifications come from Amazon’s Echo device documentation. The screen is Full HD, not 4K. At normal kitchen or living-room distances, 1080p is serviceable; close-up viewing will not match a 4K television or a high-resolution tablet. Wi-Fi 6E can help in a compatible network, but router placement, 6 GHz range, walls, congestion and internet bandwidth still determine streaming performance.
Smart-home control: capable, but not universal
The Echo Show 21 has an integrated smart-home hub and supports Alexa-connected devices, Zigbee, Matter over Wi-Fi and Matter over Thread. It also operates as a Thread 1.3 Border Router. Amazon lists support for categories including lights, plugs, switches, sensors, locks, shades, thermostats, fans, air purifiers, some appliances and robotic vacuums.
- Zigbee devices can be discovered through Alexa when compatible.
- Matter support covers supported device types and implementation profiles, not every feature a manufacturer offers.
- Thread connectivity helps compatible low-power devices join a Thread network.
“Built-in hub” does not mean every product connects directly. A device may still need its manufacturer account, an Alexa skill, a separate bridge, a paid service, a supported Matter category or region-specific support. A complex installation may also benefit from a vendor hub or dedicated automation controller. The Show 21 is a convenient Alexa-centered control point, not a guaranteed replacement for every proprietary bridge.

Organization features for a shared household
The large screen makes information persistent rather than hidden inside a phone. Depending on software, account and service integration, households can use calendars, shopping and to-do lists, reminders, notes, announcements, weather, recipes, cooking guidance, smart-home favorites and supported package information. Amazon’s original Echo Show 15 concept centered on shared household organization; the Show 21 extends that idea with more viewing area.
Before buying, check whether the household’s calendar and task services integrate as expected. Families that rely mainly on Google Calendar, Apple services or another task platform should confirm compatibility rather than assume that every account appears identically. Shared profiles and permissions also matter: the screen can expose personalized reminders, shopping activity or appointments in a common room.
Fire TV and everyday entertainment
Fire TV is built in, so the Show 21 can stream supported services, play music and podcasts, read audiobooks, show news and display instructional or recipe videos. Amazon says the Show 21 and the 2024 second-generation Echo Show 15 use Fire TV and are designed for smoother streaming with Wi-Fi 6E.

It works well as a kitchen television or secondary-room screen. It is a poor substitute for a dedicated primary TV when you want 4K resolution, HDMI inputs, a much larger image, extensive picture controls or a neutral display free of Amazon recommendations and shopping-related content. The app selection and physical connectivity are also narrower than on many conventional televisions.
Calls, cameras and privacy controls
The 13 MP camera has a wide 124-degree diagonal view and supports automatic framing and zoom features described in Amazon’s documentation. It can handle Alexa-to-Alexa calls, enabled Drop In, video calls and viewing of compatible cameras and doorbells. Actual camera behavior depends on the model, skill, account and country; Amazon’s Alexa RTC documentation describes compatible one-way video and one- or two-way audio scenarios.
A physical camera cover provides a clear hardware privacy control, and the device has microphone and camera mute controls. Those measures do not make the device local-only: voice, calls, personalized content and some camera services involve Amazon accounts and cloud processing. Review household profiles, calling permissions, recordings and camera access before placing it in a private area.

What Alexa+ changes
Amazon currently describes Alexa+ as a more conversational assistant that can maintain context, handle interruptions, create plans and checklists, continue tasks across Echo, Fire TV, the Alexa app and the web, and take actions such as supported shopping, scheduling or bookings. Amazon says Alexa+ is free with Prime. Amazon also promotes visual shopping on the Echo Show 15 and 21, allowing voice, touch or both to browse and compare products.
Alexa+ is software, not a permanent hardware specification. Availability, language, geography, account eligibility, supported services and rollout can vary. The Show 21 does not automatically provide every Alexa+ function, and Alexa+ does not remove the need for the Alexa app or guarantee that every smart-home action can be expressed in natural language.

Amazon’s launch announcement lists the 2024 Echo Show 15 at $299.99. Compare the Show 21 with that second-generation model, not casually with the original 2021 Echo Show 15. Choose the 21 when distance, visibility and TV use justify its footprint; choose the 15 when the main job is organization and a smaller wall or lower launch price matters.

Installation and placement
- Choose the wall or surface. Check stud or suitable anchor placement, viewing height, glare and whether the screen will intrude visually when idle.
- Plan power first. A nearby outlet and a concealed or acceptable cable route matter more than with a portable Echo Show. Wall-mounting hardware at launch does not include installation labor or every wall configuration.
- Check the network. Verify reliable Wi-Fi where the display will live; an optional Ethernet accessory may require the micro-USB connection.
- Set up Alexa. Use the Alexa app to sign in, configure household profiles, calendars, routines, privacy controls and compatible smart-home devices.
- Test shared use. Confirm that the intended camera, calendar, recipe and streaming services work for the relevant accounts and region.
Who should buy the Echo Show 21?
It makes sense when
- Several people need a visible screen in a kitchen or family room.
- You already use Alexa and want Fire TV, controls, calendars and recipes together.
- You have compatible Zigbee, Matter or Thread devices and want a convenient touchscreen control point.
- A wide camera view and large video-call image are useful.
Choose something else when
- You need a 4K primary television, HDMI inputs or cinema-scale viewing.
- The device will be used mainly at bedside or from a few feet away.
- You want portability, local-only privacy, vendor-neutral automation or advanced local control.
- A wall-mounted screen would dominate a small room or duplicate an existing TV.
Alternatives include the Echo Show 15 for organization-first households, a smaller Echo Show for countertops and portability, or an Echo Hub when smart-home control matters more than Fire TV and family media. A conventional TV plus separate smart speaker or a dedicated automation controller may offer better resolution, neutrality or local control, but will not combine all of Amazon’s functions in one panel.
Final assessment
The Echo Show 21’s value depends on using its large shared screen every day. It is a strong fit for an Alexa-heavy household that wants one prominent place for controls, calendars, recipes, calls and casual television. It is not a 4K TV, a universal smart-home bridge or automatically the best display simply because it is the largest. If the extra visibility will not change how the household lives, the Echo Show 15, a smaller Echo Show or a dedicated TV and smart speaker is likely the more sensible purchase.
