Amazon Astro is a wheeled, Alexa-enabled home robot that can navigate mapped indoor spaces, bring a screen and camera to different rooms, and support home monitoring and calls. It is not a general-purpose household helper: it does not clean, climb stairs as an everyday assumption, or pick up objects. For readers considering one in 2026, the key caveat is that its current new-unit availability and support are not confirmed by an active official listing.
What Amazon Astro is
Amazon announced Astro in 2021 as a mobile home robot combining Alexa, an Echo Show-style display, cameras and microphones, indoor navigation, and a small cargo bin. It was designed for use inside a mapped home. Amazon’s stated uses include communication, reminders, entertainment, smart-home control, and home monitoring—not cooking, cleaning, or general physical work. Amazon’s original Astro announcement describes its capabilities and launch context.
Astro is best thought of as a roaming smart display and mobile indoor camera. Unlike an Echo Show, it can travel to a requested location; unlike a robot vacuum, it is not designed to clean floors. Mobility is its distinguishing feature, but it also brings navigation, charging, and access limitations that fixed devices do not have.
How Astro moves around the home
Amazon calls Astro’s mobility system Intelligent Motion. The company describes it as using simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) to determine its position and navigate a changing indoor environment. Sensors help it avoid obstacles and identify hazards such as stairs. Users can define out-of-bounds zones, and Amazon says Astro can return to its charger when its battery is low.

That does not mean it can reach every room or move reliably through every layout. Clutter, loose cables, pet bowls, narrow passages, thresholds, moved furniture, and closed doors can restrict access. Do not assume it can serve multiple floors or safely negotiate stairs. If the robot is blocked, out of charge, or unable to dock, its ability to patrol or provide a live view is limited.
What Astro can do
Alexa, entertainment, and smart-home control
Astro can answer Alexa requests, provide information, play music and podcasts, and control compatible smart-home devices. Amazon’s original feature description also includes reminders and alerts when a timer goes off. Current compatibility with particular Alexa features or services should be checked before purchase; the available product information does not establish support for Alexa+.
Calls and household communication
Astro can make or receive Alexa calls and follow a person during a call, bringing the screen and camera along as someone moves between rooms. Amazon also described using it to take family photos. This may suit households that want a mobile way to check in, but it is not a substitute for a dedicated caregiving service or in-person assistance.

Carrying small items
Astro has a cargo bin for small items placed into it. Amazon described using its visual identification feature to find a household member and carrying an item in the bin. This is not robotic grasping: Astro should not be expected to pick something up from the floor, handle arbitrary objects, or reliably hand an item to someone.
Remote viewing and monitoring
When you are away, Amazon described sending Astro to inspect a specified area and using the Astro app to view a live feed. Its periscope camera can provide a view of areas that may be hard to see from a stationary camera. Amazon also described alerts for an unrecognized person and detection of certain alarm sounds, including smoke, carbon-monoxide, or glass-breaking sounds, where the relevant services and configuration support them.
These features make Astro a mobile monitoring aid, not a guaranteed security response system. It may be docked, obstructed, unable to reach the event, or disconnected. Sound detection is not a certified smoke or carbon-monoxide detector, and Astro should not replace dedicated alarms, an alarm system, emergency response, or professional monitoring.

Ring integration and announced features
Amazon originally described Astro working with Ring Protect Pro for autonomous patrols, event investigation, cloud video clips, and clip review in the Ring or Astro apps. Ring-related recording and patrol capabilities can depend on subscriptions, account and software support, connectivity, and configuration; verify current Astro compatibility and plan terms with Ring’s plan information before relying on them.

Those are dated announcements, not a guarantee that every feature is available to every owner today; availability may depend on software, region, account, and subscription. Astro brings some Echo Show functions to different rooms, but it is not simply an Echo Show with wheels: mobility enables remote inspection and movement during calls, while adding cost and operational complexity.

Privacy and household controls
Amazon described a physical button that disables Astro’s microphones, cameras, and movement; a red indicator shows when those functions are disabled. The company also described a visible indicator when video is streamed to the cloud and an indicator when Astro records a voice request after hearing its wake word. Out-of-bounds zones can restrict where the robot travels.
Amazon said some image, sensor, and visual-ID processing occurs on the device, and that visual-ID data is stored there. That does not mean all information stays local: Amazon separately described cloud streaming for live-view video and cloud services for voice requests and security features. A mobile camera and microphone that can enter more rooms raise different privacy questions from a fixed speaker or camera. Review Amazon’s current privacy documentation, account settings, and household access rules before enabling monitoring.

Astro for Business was a distinct security product launched in November 2023, not another name for the home model. Amazon’s launch materials described business features such as custom and scheduled patrol routes, live view, two-way talk, visual ID, a periscope camera with night vision, and Ring Alarm integration. Its launch price was $2,349.99; the same announcement listed service prices including Ring Protect Pro at $20 per month, Astro Secure at $60 per month, and Virtual Security Guard at $99 per month when combined as required. These are historical business-product terms, not pricing for home Astro. Amazon’s business launch announcement contains those details.

Amazon discontinued Astro for Business in 2024. TechCrunch reported that business units would stop functioning on September 25, 2024, and that affected customers were offered a $300 credit and refunds for unused prepaid Astro Secure fees. The business shutdown does not by itself establish that the home model was discontinued. TechCrunch’s report covers the discontinuation.
Can you buy Amazon Astro in 2026?
Amazon originally announced Astro for the United States as a limited-quantity Day 1 Edition product with invite-based access initially. The standard launch price was $1,449.99, with an introductory $999.99 price. Those figures describe the 2021 launch, not a current selling price. An active official product listing and current new-unit availability have not been confirmed; the historical Amazon Astro product path alone does not establish that a unit can be bought or supported now.
If considering a used unit, confirm the seller’s account-transfer process, activation requirements, warranty coverage, software and service support, return terms, battery condition, and whether the features you need still work with your account and region. A marketplace listing is not proof of current Amazon support, and the condition of a robot’s battery and navigation can materially affect whether it is useful.

Who Astro may suit—and who should look elsewhere
- Potentially a fit: Alexa and Ring households that value mobile video calls, occasional remote room checks, or experimenting with consumer robotics and accept the cost and setup demands.
- Consider an Echo Show instead: If you primarily want a screen, Alexa, calls, reminders, and smart-home control without autonomous movement. See Amazon’s Echo Show options.
- Consider fixed cameras instead: If predictable coverage of specific areas matters more than a camera that moves between rooms. Ring’s camera range is a separate fixed-camera category.
- Choose a robot vacuum for cleaning: Astro is not a floor-cleaning robot; a robot vacuum is designed for that job.
- Do not rely on Astro for: professional-grade security, emergency detection or response, care that requires a person to intervene, or homes where stairs and tight or cluttered paths prevent reliable access.
Astro’s value depends on whether mobile access to Alexa, calls, and camera views is worth more to you than simpler fixed devices. The unresolved current availability and support questions matter as much as the feature list: confirm them before treating an advertised unit as a practical purchase.
