AI-generated music can come with permission to use it commercially without giving you a copyright in the AI-generated composition. Those are separate questions: a service license sets what you may do under its terms, while U.S. copyrightability depends on human authorship. Before putting a track in a smart-home tutorial, app demo, or video for a connected device, check both the plan’s license and the rules of the platform where you will publish it.
What Copyright Protects In AI-Generated Music
The U.S. Copyright Office says a work generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, and prompts alone do not make the person who wrote them the author. In a mixed work, only the human-authored parts may be protected. This does not answer whether a service lets you use a track. A vendor may grant commercial-use rights under a subscription even when copyright protection for the AI-generated music itself is not established. Treat the license as permission under the vendor’s terms, not proof that you own an enforceable copyright in every part of the track.
How The License Can Affect A Smart-Home Project
For a video showing a thermostat setup, lighting routine, or speaker installation, the practical question is whether the plan permits your intended use: a monetized tutorial, client deliverable, paid advertisement, or streaming release can each have different requirements. A claim such as “commercial use” does not establish every permitted use, territory, duration, or platform. Check the current vendor terms for the exact project and save the plan details and license evidence that apply when you download.

For example, a prompt might ask for an original instrumental bed for a two-minute smart-lighting walkthrough, with a steady pulse, restrained dynamics, and no vocals so spoken instructions remain clear. That describes a creative brief; it does not establish that a particular service offers specific controls, guarantees a particular result, or grants rights beyond its stated license. If you need a certain genre, duration, vocal style, or export format, verify that the service supports it and that the license covers your use.

Check These Rights Before You Publish
- Write down the use: personal demonstration, monetized video, client project, advertisement, podcast, or music release.
- Check the service’s current terms for the plan under which the track was generated and downloaded. Confirm the permitted use, attribution rules, exclusions, and whether the license applies to that specific track.
- Keep the track’s license certificate or other download evidence, where the service provides it, alongside the project file and the plan information.
- Review the publishing platform’s own rules. Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it, and that it supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits. Voices, Covers, And Uploaded Audio Need Extra Care
Do not imitate an identifiable singer or use someone’s voice, recording, or composition without the necessary consent and permissions. Spotify’s stated policy requires authorization for vocal impersonation. A service’s commercial-use license does not by itself establish consent from a person whose voice is imitated or rights to a song, sample, or recording you supply. For covers, samples, reference audio, or voice cloning, check both the service’s terms and the rights attached to the source material before using the result.
