Seattle-based IUNU announced on April 15, 2025, that it had raised $20 million in a round led by S2G Investments, with participation from Farm Credit Canada and Lewis and Clark Partners. The company plans to use the funding to expand its commercial and engineering teams and grow LUNA, an enterprise platform that uses cameras, sensors, computer vision and plant-science models to help commercial greenhouses monitor crops, forecast harvests and plan labor.

IUNU said LUNA was operating in more than 100 facilities across 18 countries at the time of the announcement. The technology is best understood as greenhouse decision support—not proof that farms can operate without experienced growers.

What IUNU sells

IUNU, pronounced “you-knew,” sells LUNA to commercial greenhouse operators rather than hobby growers. The platform combines hardware, software and integrations in a workflow that looks broadly like this:

  1. Data collection: rail-mounted mobile cameras, including IUNU’s trolley-mast imaging system, work alongside fixed cameras and environmental or canopy-level sensors.
  2. Plant analysis: repeated images and measurements are processed with computer-vision and plant-science models to track crop development and identify changes.
  3. Decision support: the resulting data supports alerts, yield forecasts, labor planning, crop-registration workflows, issue detection and crop-steering recommendations.
  4. Operational integration: IUNU says LUNA can connect with greenhouse climate-control systems, ERP platforms and other automation or data systems.

That distinction matters. Integration with a climate-control system does not necessarily mean LUNA independently controls every temperature, irrigation or lighting decision. Public materials support automated data collection and analysis, but do not establish universal, lights-out greenhouse autonomy.

Why greenhouse operators want plant-level data

Commercial growers must continually estimate when crops will be ready, how much labor harvesting will require, whether plants are developing as expected and whether changes to irrigation or climate are producing the intended result. They also need to detect quality problems, disease risks and growth anomalies before they affect an entire compartment or crop cycle.

Those decisions have traditionally depended on grower experience, manual scouting, periodic sampling, handwritten records and spreadsheets. Manual sampling can be valuable, but it provides only a small view of a large, rapidly changing crop. IUNU’s proposition is that frequent, standardized imaging can give growers a more detailed time series across many more plants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IUNU claimed in 2025 that LUNA increased plant sampling from 0.016% to 10%. That is a company-reported comparison; the public announcement does not provide enough methodological detail to treat it as an independently audited industry benchmark.

What LUNA can help measure

Crop registration and growth tracking

By repeatedly imaging plants, LUNA can help operators register crops, track development and compare actual growth with expected progress. This can give a grower a more consistent view of what is happening across compartments instead of relying only on selected inspection points.

Yield and harvest forecasting

Forecasting tools are intended to improve estimates of harvest timing and volume. Better forecasts may help coordinate labor, sales commitments, packing and logistics, but a forecast remains probabilistic. Weather changes, equipment failures, disease, cultivar changes and unexpected crop-steering decisions can reduce its accuracy.

Labor planning and quality analysis

The platform is also positioned to support harvest planning and labor-quality analysis. A greenhouse may use those measurements to identify where work is falling behind or where process consistency needs attention. That can improve operations, but it also requires careful communication with workers so that monitoring is treated as process improvement rather than unexplained surveillance.

Crop steering

Crop steering means adjusting environmental and cultivation inputs—such as irrigation, climate, pruning and related practices—to influence plant balance, growth, timing, fruit quality and yield.

LUNA’s stated role is to provide compartment-level measurements and recommendations that help growers decide how to steer a crop. The correct response can vary with cultivar, substrate, irrigation equipment, local climate and market requirements. A head grower may therefore remain responsible for interpreting the recommendation and deciding whether to act.

Which crops and facilities are the target?

IUNU’s 2025 announcement emphasized high-value vine crops, particularly tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. The company also cited activity in leafy greens and partnerships with major North American ornamental growers. Its website lists tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, berries, leafy greens and ornamentals among its crop categories.

LUNA is unlikely to be a practical fit for a hobby greenhouse, a small operator seeking an inexpensive standalone camera or a facility without the infrastructure and staff needed to act on additional crop data.

What evidence of traction exists?

The company said LUNA operated in more than 100 facilities across 18 countries as of April 2025. IUNU also reported 330% growth in its vine-crop segment, although it did not publicly specify the comparison period or whether that figure referred to revenue, customers, facilities or another metric.

Those figures indicate commercial activity, but they are not independently verified performance results. IUNU’s website presents case-study claims involving operators including Bushel Boy Farms and Pure Green Farms; prospective buyers should request comparable customer references and the underlying measurement methods.

IUNU’s earlier financing history provides context. The company announced a $7 million Series A in 2020, describing LUNA as a system using mobile and fixed cameras plus environmental sensors for plant modeling, forecasting, space utilization and labor planning. In 2019, it announced an additional $7.5 million and said LUNA had surpassed one billion square feet of greenhouse imaging and analysis. Those are historical milestones, not current operating metrics.

GeekWire reported that IUNU had raised $65 million in total and employed approximately 51 people in April 2025. That total should be attributed to GeekWire rather than treated as an independently recomputed figure.

What the $20 million could change

The announced use of proceeds points most directly to commercial expansion and engineering hiring. In practice, that could support sales and customer success, facility deployment, integrations, computer-vision development and plant-science work, as well as expansion in North America and Europe.

The funding does not, by itself, establish IUNU’s valuation, revenue, profitability, customer retention or return on investment. Nor does it confirm specific new crops or product features unless the company announces them separately.

IUNU versus greenhouse control systems

Plant monitoring and environmental control are related but different categories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • IUNU LUNA: emphasizes plant-level imaging, crop intelligence, forecasting, labor analytics and recommendations.
  • Greenhouse-control platforms: generally focus more directly on climate, irrigation, lighting or fertigation automation.
  • Koidra: a Seattle-area alternative whose public positioning is more closely associated with AI-assisted environmental and greenhouse control. See Koidra’s official site.
  • Internal systems and manual scouting: may cost less and offer greater control, but can be less standardized or difficult to scale.

These options are not interchangeable. A greenhouse might use LUNA alongside existing control systems rather than replacing them.

Risks and limitations

Imaging systems operate in difficult environments. Condensation, dust, glare, shadows, dense foliage and changing sunlight can affect image quality. Rail-mounted hardware also creates installation, maintenance and facility-compatibility requirements. Obstructed cameras, sensor drift or equipment outages can leave gaps in a crop’s time series.

Biological variability creates another challenge. A model trained on one cultivar, region or production system may not perform identically in another. A visual symptom can have several causes, including irrigation, nutrition, temperature, disease, pests or labor practices. Detection is valuable only if the operator has a timely and appropriate response.

Better measurements also do not automatically create better commercial outcomes. Sales contracts, market demand, logistics and labor availability can remain uncertain even when crop forecasts improve. A dashboard can also increase information overload if alerts are not prioritized well.

Questions to ask before buying

IUNU uses a demo and contact-sales model, and no public list price or standardized plan was identified in the available official materials as of August 16, 2026. A greenhouse considering the platform should ask:

  • Which crops, cultivars and production systems have been validated?
  • What hardware, rail, power, network and installation requirements apply?
  • How are condensation, glare, blocked cameras and sensor failures handled?
  • Which climate-control, ERP, labor and automation systems integrate with LUNA?
  • What are the hardware, installation, software, support and integration costs?
  • What data does the grower own, and can imagery and derived metrics be exported?
  • How accurate are forecasts for facilities comparable in size and crop type?
  • How are model updates tested before recommendations change?
  • What happens during a network outage or hardware failure?
  • Can IUNU provide customer references and a facility-specific payback model?

IUNU stated in an earlier release that growers own and control their imagery and data. Current contractual terms should be confirmed directly because enterprise agreements can change.

Bottom line

IUNU’s $20 million raise is significant because it funds an attempt to make greenhouse production measurable at plant scale. LUNA combines repeated imaging and sensor data with forecasting, labor analysis and grower recommendations, offering a potentially useful layer above manual scouting and alongside existing control systems.

The strongest evidence is commercial adoption reported by the company, not independent proof that LUNA universally increases yield or profitability. For a large greenhouse with repetitive crops, labor pressure and a need for better forecasting, the platform may justify an enterprise evaluation. For smaller operations or buyers seeking fully autonomous farming, the public evidence does not support that expectation.
