Short answer: An AI cover that imitates a named artist needs two separate permissions checks. The song itself remains someone else’s copyrighted composition, so publishing or monetizing it generally requires a licence. Cloning a real singer’s voice adds a separate likeness and publicity-rights issue. Get permission for the voice audio you submit, disclose AI use where a service or platform requires it, and avoid naming or imitating a living artist unless you have authorization.
Why An AI Artist-Voice Cover Has Two Rights Layers
The Song
Changing the lead vocal does not make the underlying song yours. Spotify announced that vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it. Spotify also described a music-spam filter and support for DDEX AI disclosures in credits; it said it had removed more than 75 million spammy tracks in the previous 12 months. In August 2026, Spotify added an “AI Persona” badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. Read the current platform and distributor rules before uploading, and disclose the AI-made identity when required.
