A19 and E26 describe different parts of a light bulb. A19 identifies the bulb’s pear-shaped envelope and approximate diameter; E26 identifies the medium Edison screw base. A standard household lamp often uses a bulb labeled A19 E26, so the two codes commonly appear together rather than represent competing bulb types.
What A19 means
A19 is an ANSI-style description of the bulb envelope—the visible glass or plastic shape. The “A” identifies the familiar A-series pear shape, and “19” expresses the nominal diameter in eighths of an inch.
That calculation is approximately 19/8 inch, or 2.375 inches (about 60.3 mm) at the widest part. It describes the bulb’s outside shape and size, not its screw connection, brightness, wattage, or electrical voltage.
What E26 means
E26 identifies the bulb’s screw base. “E” refers to the Edison screw family, while “26” indicates an approximately 26 mm thread diameter.

E26 is commonly called the medium Edison screw base in household lighting. The code tells you what socket the lamp can connect to; it does not specify whether the envelope is pear-shaped, globe-shaped, reflector-shaped, or decorative.
A19 and E26 are separate specifications

Because the labels describe different physical features, one lamp can carry both. Philips model 046677586867, for example, is specified as an A19 LED bulb with an E26 cap/base. An E26 lamp can also use another envelope shape, such as a globe or reflector, if the base fits and the fixture has enough clearance.

Will an A19 bulb fit an E26 socket?
Only if that particular A19 bulb has an E26 base. “A19” alone describes the envelope and does not guarantee the screw connection. Look for E26 on the bulb package, product label, or old lamp marking.

Even with the correct base, check the fixture’s physical space. A19 is wider and longer than some specialty envelopes, and a shade, recessed housing, or enclosed fixture may restrict the permitted dimensions.

How to choose the right bulb for a standard lamp
- Identify the socket. Read the fixture marking or the old bulb and confirm that it calls for an E26 medium screw base.
- Confirm the base on the replacement. Choose an E26-base bulb; an A19 label by itself is not enough.
- Check envelope clearance. Compare the bulb’s stated dimensions with the shade opening, fixture housing, and any enclosed-fixture limitation.
- Choose brightness by lumens. Lumens measure total visible light output, so use them instead of relying on watts alone. U.S. Department of Energy guidance gives roughly 800 lumens as a typical 60-watt-incandescent replacement range, with example LED power of about 5.9–10.5 watts.
- Select the light color. Check the package’s color-temperature description, such as warm white or cool white, for the appearance you want.
- Verify controls and conditions. Confirm dimmer compatibility, the fixture’s voltage requirements, and whether the lamp is approved for enclosed fixtures or damp locations when those conditions apply.
Why watts do not tell you everything
Watts measure electrical power use, not the total amount of light produced. Modern LEDs can produce the light of an older incandescent bulb while using substantially fewer watts. Compare the lumen rating first, then check the LED’s wattage and the package’s incandescent-equivalent claim.
For example, the Department of Energy’s buyer guidance pairs approximately 800 lumens with LED power in the roughly 5.9–10.5 W range for a 60 W incandescent replacement. That is an example range, not a universal requirement; actual products vary.

Common buying mistakes
- Assuming A19 means the socket. It describes the envelope, not the base.
- Buying by wattage alone. Two bulbs with similar wattage can produce different lumen levels.
- Ignoring clearance. A correct E26 base can still be too large for a shade or housing.
- Missing fixture restrictions. Dimming, enclosed fixtures, damp locations, and voltage requirements must match the lamp’s specifications.
- Expecting the code to specify color. A19 and E26 do not tell you whether the light is warm, neutral, or cool.
The simplest way to read a label
A label that says “A19 E26 LED” can be read in three parts: A19 is the pear-shaped envelope and its nominal size, E26 is the medium Edison screw base, and LED identifies the light-emitting technology. Add the lumen output, color temperature, dimmer rating, voltage, and fixture-use markings to decide whether it is the right replacement.

For a standard lamp, start with the socket: it needs an E26 base. Then choose an envelope—often A19—that physically fits the fixture, and compare lumens, color temperature, controls, voltage, and location ratings. A19 and E26 are complementary labels, not alternatives.
