A University of British Columbia research team has built a portable prototype that uses fluorescent labeling, optical imaging and smartphone-based analysis to measure micro- and nanoplastic particles in water. The study reports results in under 20 minutes, but this is not yet a consumer product people can order and use like a home water-testing strip. Its findings are a screening measurement—not a verdict on whether water is safe to drink.
What the prototype is—and what it isn’t
The device described in a 2024 ACS Sensors study is a small, wireless optical system paired with a mobile app. It is designed to bring some microplastic analysis closer to where a water sample is collected, rather than rely entirely on conventional laboratory equipment. The published paper describes a research platform, not a verified retail kit with standardized household instructions, regulatory approval or a confirmed purchase path. Read the study in ACS Sensors.
In other words, “portable” and “usable by untrained personnel” do not mean that a consumer can currently test a glass of water at home. The workflow still requires preparing a sample with reagents, imaging it under controlled conditions and interpreting the output.
- Researchers: University of British Columbia team
- Published: Online August 12, 2024, in ACS Sensors
- Reported particle-size range: Approximately 50 nanometres to 10 micrometres
- Reported analysis time: Less than 20 minutes
- Reported assay cost: $0.015 per test in the study’s analytical-cost estimate—not a consumer price
- Availability: The cited research and university coverage describe a prototype; they do not establish a product consumers can buy
How it detects particles
The method uses a labeling mixture containing zirconium ions, tannic acid and rhodamine B. These ingredients form fluorescent metal–phenolic networks around plastic particles in the prepared sample. The device illuminates the sample with green light and captures images through a wireless digital microscope. Image-processing and machine-learning algorithms then estimate particle quantities and sizes on a smartphone or other mobile device. The prototype is housed in a 3D-printed box.

That is more involved than dipping a sensor into a glass. The fluorescence signal and image analysis can support a particle estimate under the study’s conditions, but they should not be confused with a complete chemical identification of every particle. Techniques such as micro-Raman spectroscopy, micro-FTIR or pyrolysis-GC/MS can provide different, more detailed forms of polymer analysis.
What the researchers tested
The study demonstrated the method with plastic released from cups under hot-water or flow conditions and with nanoplastics in tap-water samples. That shows the researchers tested tap water; it does not prove that the prototype is validated for every local water supply, or that a consumer has a standardized bottled-water test protocol.

Coverage of the work highlighted an experiment in which boiled distilled water was placed in polystyrene cups and left to cool. The study reported large numbers of nanoscale particles in a 50-millilitre sample under those conditions. That is evidence about that experiment—not a basis for claiming that every disposable cup releases the same number of particles every time, or that the detected amount establishes a health effect. UBC’s overview of the prototype and the reported cup experiment provide additional context.

The work particularly demonstrated the method with polystyrene. The researchers said the software could potentially be adapted for plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene. Potential adaptation is not the same as demonstrated, equivalent performance across polymers. The available evidence does not establish comprehensive performance for PET, nylon, PVC, synthetic fibres, tire-derived particles, weathered plastics, biofilm-coated particles or irregular fragments.

How to interpret the reported numbers
The paper reports detection across roughly 50 nanometres to 10 micrometres and quantification down to approximately 330 microplastics and 3.08 × 106 nanoplastics in under 20 minutes. These are study-reported analytical figures, not guarantees for every household sample. Results can depend on particle type, sample preparation, water chemistry, contamination, calibration and the measurement method.
The size range also matters. “Microplastic” is commonly used for plastic particles smaller than 5 millimetres, with nanoplastics smaller still. The prototype’s reported operating range covers a portion of that broad size spectrum; it does not establish detection of every particle that might be called a microplastic.

The reported $0.015 assay cost is likewise a research-method estimate, not the price of a consumer test. It does not necessarily account for a commercial instrument, packaging, quality control, validated reagents, an app, shipping, regulatory compliance, replacement parts or support.
Why sampling and controls matter
A small aliquot can be quick to analyze without being representative of a bottle, a household tap, a building’s plumbing or a municipal supply. Particles may be unevenly distributed, so one sample could miss particles elsewhere or overrepresent a local concentration. A credible testing protocol would need clear instructions on where and how to collect samples, how many replicates to run, what units the result uses and how to check for contamination.

Contamination is a particular concern when the target is plastic. A sample container, pipette tip, synthetic clothing fibre, airborne dust, packaging or testing surface could add particles that were not in the water source. Reliable testing needs procedural blanks and validated collection materials, along with careful handling. A sophisticated instrument cannot correct a contaminated or unrepresentative sample.
A particle count is not a health-risk rating
The prototype estimates the presence and quantity of labeled particles. It does not, by itself, determine their full chemical composition, additives or adsorbed contaminants, or establish how exposure affects a person. Risk depends on factors including particle size and shape, polymer chemistry, dose, exposure route and duration, and the uncertainties in toxicology.
The study is about a detection method, not a drinking-water safety standard. It does not supply a universal consumer “safe number” of microplastics. A high count is not automatically proof of acute harm, and a low count does not certify water as safe. Results also need careful reporting: whether a number means particles per millilitre, per sample or an instrument-derived estimate; which sizes and polymers are included; and whether the measurement was repeated.

How it compares with other options
| Option | What it can offer | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Research prototype | Portable, relatively rapid screening in the study’s tested setup | Not an established retail home kit; sample preparation, polymer coverage and interpretation remain important |
| Qualified laboratory analysis | More sophisticated instruments and the potential for more detailed polymer identification, with formal quality controls | Can cost more and take longer; results depend on the lab’s sampling protocol, size cutoffs and reporting units |
| DIY visual or microscope check | May reveal visible debris or fibres at low cost | Appearance alone cannot reliably distinguish plastic from other material and is not a dependable test for nanoscale particles |
| Water filter | May reduce particles if the specific system is designed and validated to do so | Does not measure what was present; performance depends on filter, particle size, flow, installation and maintenance |
Measurement and remediation are different questions: a detector characterizes a sample, while a filter changes it. A filter marketed for sediment or general “purity” is not automatically certified to remove microplastics. Check the claims and certification for the particular system, and maintain it as directed.
What to do if you are concerned
- Don’t treat an unvalidated test as a safety decision. There is no universal household threshold in this study that turns a particle count into “safe” or “unsafe.”
- For a defensible measurement, ask a qualified laboratory what particle sizes and polymers it can analyze, how samples must be collected, whether blanks and replicates are included, and how results will be reported.
- Reduce avoidable plastic contact with hot food and drinks. Avoid heating food or drink in plastic unless the container is intended for that use; this is a general precaution, not proof that a particular cup caused a health problem.
- If considering filtration, verify the specific claim. Look for validated or certified particle-removal performance relevant to the particles of concern, and follow installation and replacement instructions. Filtration alone does not tell you what was in the original water.
Can you buy this UBC device?
The cited study and UBC coverage do not identify a verified manufacturer, retail purchase page, consumer reagent kit, app-download path, warranty or home-use protocol for this specific detector. The accurate answer is therefore that it is a promising research prototype, not a product shown to be available for household purchase. The study’s low assay-cost estimate should not be read as a retail price.
