Yes—but not in the way the headline suggests. Researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) developed a thin polymer film that measured about 95% visible-light transmittance, compared with roughly 91% for the glass benchmark in their study. Its surface also diffuses light, emits thermal radiation toward the sky, and repels water.
The material is called a polymer-based micro-photonic multi-functional metamaterial, or PMMM. It is a laboratory-developed film for glass and translucent building surfaces—not a commercially available replacement for windows or air conditioning.
What PMMM actually is
PMMM is not a new kind of bulk glass. It is a structured polymer film whose optical, thermal and water-repellent properties come from microscopic surface geometry. The reported design uses polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a transparent polymer selected for its optical behavior, infrared emissivity, stability and potential manufacturability.

The researchers fabricated the structure using photolithography and etching to create a silicon-based mould, then solution-cast the polymer and peeled the film from the mould. The paper describes the material as potentially scalable, but does not establish mass production or commercial deployment.

Why a frosted-looking surface can transmit more light
PMMM’s apparent contradiction comes from the difference between total light transmission and clear image transmission.
The micro-pyramids scatter incoming sunlight instead of allowing it to remain a concentrated beam. The result is a hazy or frosted appearance: daylight passes through, but a sharp view does not. That can reduce glare, soften illumination and provide permanent visual privacy.

The 95% figure therefore means that a high proportion of visible light passed through the sample; it does not mean that PMMM offers a clearer view than ordinary clear glass.

For a skylight, atrium or greenhouse roof, diffuse daylight may be useful. For a façade where occupants want an unobstructed view, the same diffusion may be a disadvantage.
How the passive cooling works
Every object emits thermal infrared radiation. Under suitable atmospheric conditions, radiation in part of the approximately 8–13 micrometre atmospheric transmission window can pass through the atmosphere toward the cold sky and, ultimately, outer space.
PMMM was designed to emit strongly in this range, with reported infrared emissivity of approximately 0.98. A surface with high emissivity can radiate heat away without a compressor, refrigerant or operating electricity. This is known as passive radiative cooling.

They also reported a sample temperature approximately 6°C below ambient air temperature in humid Karlsruhe conditions.

That result needs careful interpretation. A film’s surface temperature is not the same as a room’s indoor air temperature, and neither is equivalent to whole-building air-conditioning savings. Actual building performance would depend on the exposed area, thermal connection between the film and the building, solar loading, indoor heat gains, surrounding surfaces and the rest of the roof or façade assembly.
When radiative cooling works—and when it weakens
Radiative cooling generally benefits from a clear view of the sky. Clouds, high humidity, nearby warm surfaces and obstructions can reduce the amount of heat that escapes through the atmospheric window. Vertical windows may also have less sky exposure than roof glazing.
Indoor heat sources, imperfect installation and additional glazing layers can further reduce the useful cooling delivered to a room. PMMM’s cooling mechanism itself needs no direct operating electricity, but a building using it may still require fans, pumps, lighting or conventional air conditioning.
How the surface self-cleans
The pyramid texture makes the polymer strongly water-repellent, or superhydrophobic. The researchers measured a water contact angle of approximately 152° for PMMM, compared with about 26° for glass.

On a superhydrophobic surface, water tends to form rounded, mobile droplets rather than spreading into a film. Rain, sprayed water or dew can roll across the surface and carry away some loose dust. The researchers also demonstrated a dew-assisted mechanism: radiative cooling lowers the film’s temperature, encouraging condensation, and moving dew droplets can remove deposited particles.
“Self-cleaning” should not be read as “maintenance-free.” Oily residues, soot, mineral deposits, bird droppings, pollen, algae and other biological contamination may not be removed by ordinary rain or dew. Windblown grit, scratching, cleaning chemicals and long-term weathering could also damage the microstructure or reduce its water repellency.
Does it provide privacy?
Yes, but only through permanent diffusion. PMMM allows daylight through while making views blurry. It is not switchable privacy glass, does not provide an adjustable clear-to-opaque state, and is not a substitute for blinds where occupants need complete light control or darkness.

Potential building and greenhouse uses
- Greenhouse roofs: Diffuse light can distribute illumination more evenly within a crop canopy and reduce harsh hotspots.
- Skylights and atriums: The film could provide daylight while reducing glare and unwanted views.
- Translucent façades: It may suit spaces where privacy is more important than clear sightlines.
- Daylighting systems: Passive heat rejection could complement other solar-control measures.
- Existing glazing: The concept is compatible with a film-based retrofit approach, although adhesion, protection and building-code performance would need to be demonstrated.
The researchers estimated approximately a 9% improvement in photosynthesis efficiency compared with glass roofs under their study assumptions. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed 9% increase in crop yield. Results would vary with crop species, cultivar, season, greenhouse orientation, temperature, humidity, condensation and the film’s ultraviolet and infrared transmission.

PMMM’s claimed distinction is not superiority in every individual category. It is the unusual combination of high measured visible transmittance, strong diffusion, infrared emission and water repellency in one microstructured polymer film.
What the research does—and does not—prove
The study demonstrates a credible multifunctional material at research scale. It does not yet establish:
- that a finished building will be 6°C cooler indoors;
- a guaranteed reduction in air-conditioning consumption;
- years of outdoor durability under ultraviolet exposure, thermal cycling, hail, abrasion or windblown sand;
- long-term adhesion to architectural glass;
- resistance to all contaminants or cleaning chemicals;
- fire, impact, wind-load or broad building-code approvals;
- compatibility with every insulating-glass unit or façade system;
- commercial pricing, warranty coverage or a standard installation method;
- a complete environmental life-cycle, disposal or recycling assessment.
Those questions matter because a microstructured polymer installed on a roof or façade must survive conditions that a controlled laboratory sample does not encounter.

Not as an identified off-the-shelf product. The research sources do not provide a public PMMM ordering page, consumer price, certified installer network or established commercial product name as of August 2026. The paper’s reference to manufacturing potential should not be confused with market availability.
For a current project, buyers would need to evaluate established alternatives such as architectural low-emissivity or solar-control glass, commercial window films, switchable glazing, translucent greenhouse roofing and conventional external shading. These are alternatives, not equivalent PMMM products. Manufacturer starting points include Guardian Glass, 3M and SageGlass.
Who should—and should not—consider the concept?
PMMM is most interesting for daylight-driven applications where diffuse light, privacy and passive heat rejection are all valuable: greenhouse roofs, skylights, atriums and translucent building surfaces.
It is a poor fit if the priority is a distortion-free view, proven long-term outdoor durability, immediate procurement, established code approvals or guaranteed cooling in cloudy or humid conditions. It should also not be treated as a substitute for properly designed shading, ventilation or mechanical cooling without building-specific analysis.
