One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor frequent Indian cooking, the best range hood is usually a ducted, externally vented hood in the 600 to 900 CFM range, with a real capture canopy, stainless baffle filters, correctly sized smooth metal ductwork, and a makeup-air plan if the hood is over 400 CFM. That combination matters more than brand alone.
If your kitchen regularly sees tadka, frying, dosa, paratha, roasting spices, biryani simmering, wok-style cooking, or high-heat griddling, a ductless charcoal hood or an over-the-range microwave vent will usually disappoint. They may reduce some odor, but they do not exhaust heat, moisture, grease aerosol, combustion byproducts, and fine particles outdoors. On our kitchen remodels, the difference between a decorative hood and a properly designed exhaust system is obvious within the first week of cooking.
The short version: choose a ducted under-cabinet hood, wall-mount hood, cabinet insert, liner, or side-draft hood. Size it at least as wide as the cooktop, preferably 3 to 6 inches wider for wall installations. Use the shortest, straightest duct path you can. Avoid flexible duct. Plan electrical, cabinet clearance, exterior termination, dampers, and makeup air before ordering the appliance.
What Makes Indian Cooking Hard on a Range Hood?
Indian cooking produces a difficult mix of heat, oil vapor, smoke, moisture, and strong aromatic compounds. Tempering spices in hot oil can create a sharp smoke plume in seconds. Frying pakoras, puris, fish, or cutlets sends grease aerosol into the air. Roasting cumin, mustard seed, dried chilies, and garam masala can overwhelm a weak hood long before the food is done. Long simmering adds moisture and odor that can settle into cabinets, drywall, upholstery, and open-plan living areas.

The challenge is not only CFM. A hood has to capture the plume before it spreads. Once smoke rolls past the hood face, the blower may still be moving air, but it is pulling diluted room air instead of the cooking plume. That is why shallow microwave vents and small decorative hoods often fail over front burners, even when the advertised airflow looks respectable.
On job sites, we look at four things before we talk about finishes: cooking style, cooktop width and burner output, hood capture area, and the duct route to outdoors. A 900 CFM hood choked through a small, long, elbow-heavy duct can be loud and weak. A well-mounted 600 CFM hood with a deep canopy and straight duct can outperform it in real cooking.
The Best Hood Type for Indian Cooking
The best fit for most Indian cooking households is a ducted hood that vents outdoors. The right format depends on the kitchen layout.
Under-Cabinet Range Hoods
Under-cabinet hoods are practical when the cooktop sits below wall cabinets. For a 30-inch range, a 30-inch hood is the minimum. If cabinet layout allows it, a 36-inch hood over a 30-inch cooktop gives better side capture. Look for a depth of roughly 20 to 24 inches when front-burner cooking is common. Many shallow models miss smoke from the front pans.
A strong under-cabinet hood in the 600 to 900 CFM range is often the best value. In 2026, many midrange ducted models land around $400 to $700, while some budget 600 CFM stainless hoods are available around $150 to $350 before installation. For serious cooking, stainless baffle filters are worth prioritizing over thin mesh filters.
Wall-Mount Chimney Hoods
Wall-mount hoods work well when there are no upper cabinets above the range. They can provide excellent capture if the canopy is wide and deep enough, but some stylish chimney hoods are more decorative than functional. For Indian cooking, do not buy on appearance alone. Check CFM, filter type, duct outlet size, recommended mounting height, and canopy depth.
For a 30-inch cooktop, a 36-inch wall hood is often a better choice if the room allows it. For a 36-inch range, consider a 42-inch hood in heavy-use kitchens. The extra 3 inches per side helps catch smoke that rolls outward during frying or griddle cooking.
Cabinet Inserts and Liners
Inserts and liners are common in custom kitchens where the hood is hidden inside a wood, plaster, or built-in surround. They can work very well, but only when the insert and enclosure are sized correctly. The liner needs enough depth, removable filter clearance, service access, and a duct route that does not pinch the system.
Recommended Free Tools
This is where early planning matters. If the cabinet shop builds a shallow hood enclosure first, the mechanical options shrink fast. On remodels, we prefer to select the insert, blower, duct size, and mounting height before the hood surround is fabricated.
Side-Draft and Inclined Hoods
Side-draft or inclined hoods are worth considering for high-heat Indian cooking, especially when the front burners see a lot of use. These hoods sit closer to the cooking plume and pull smoke back at an angle rather than relying only on an overhead canopy. Premium inclined models commonly advertise 850 to 1,100 CFM and often cost about $1,099 to $1,399 before installation in 2026.
They are not the right look for every kitchen, and they still need proper ductwork. But for homeowners who care more about capturing tadka smoke than maintaining a traditional chimney profile, side-draft hoods deserve a serious look.
Ductless Hoods and Microwave Vents
Ductless hoods are a fallback, not the gold standard. They recirculate air through grease and charcoal filters, which can reduce some odor but cannot remove moisture, heat, combustion gases, or all fine particles outdoors. They also require regular charcoal filter replacement, and performance drops as filters load up.

Over-the-range microwave vents are usually not ideal for frequent Indian cooking. Many are shallow, mounted high, and weak at capturing front-burner smoke. They can be acceptable for light cooking in a small kitchen, but if you fry or temper spices several times a week, replacing the microwave with a real ducted hood is one of the highest-impact kitchen upgrades you can make.
How Many CFM Do You Need?
For frequent Indian cooking, start with at least 300 to 400 CFM. For many U.S. homes, 600 to 900 CFM is the practical sweet spot, provided the ductwork, noise level, and makeup air are addressed. For very high-output ranges, open-plan kitchens, island cooktops, or families cooking several high-heat meals a day, 900 CFM or more may be justified, but only with proper mechanical planning.
One common gas range rule of thumb is about 1 CFM per 100 BTU of burner output. A 45,000 BTU range points to about 450 CFM before considering cooking style. Indian cooking often pushes the recommendation higher because the emissions are more intense than simple boiling or light sauteing.
CFM is not a guarantee. A poorly shaped 1,000 CFM hood can spill smoke if it is too narrow, too shallow, mounted too high, or connected to restrictive ductwork. A properly placed 600 CFM hood with a deeper capture area can feel stronger in daily use.
| Cooking Pattern | Typical Hood Target | What to Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Light cooking, mostly boiling and simple sauteing | 300 to 400 CFM | May still struggle with frying and spice tempering |
| Frequent Indian cooking in a standard wall kitchen | 600 to 900 CFM | Best balance of capture, cost, duct size, and noise |
| Open-plan kitchen or island cooktop | 700 to 1,200 CFM | Needs larger capture area and careful makeup-air planning |
| High-output pro-style range | 900 CFM or higher | Requires duct sizing, static pressure review, and possible remote blower |
Capture Area Matters as Much as Airflow
When a homeowner tells us their hood is powerful but the kitchen still smells smoky, we usually find a capture problem. The hood may be too narrow, too shallow, too high, or poorly aligned with the burners they actually use.
For wall installations, choose a hood at least as wide as the cooktop. If space allows, go 3 to 6 inches wider. A 36-inch hood over a 30-inch range is a strong setup. A 42-inch hood over a 36-inch range is often better for heavy frying or griddle use.
Depth matters too. Many high-emission tasks happen on front burners because they are easier to access. If the hood is only 15 to 18 inches deep, smoke can rise in front of it. A deeper 20 to 24 inch canopy or a side-draft design is more forgiving.
Mounting height should follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Many residential hoods land roughly 24 to 36 inches above the cooking surface, depending on the model and fuel type. Mounting too high looks open and airy, but it reduces capture. Mounting too low can create clearance, heat, and usability problems. The installation manual wins.

Filters: Choose Baffle Over Mesh for Heavy Cooking
For oil-heavy cooking, stainless steel baffle filters are usually the better choice. They are durable, dishwasher-cleanable, and less prone to clogging than light aluminum mesh filters under frequent grease exposure. Mesh filters can work in light-duty kitchens, but they load up faster and restrict airflow when not cleaned often.
For a household that fries several times per week, clean baffle filters at least monthly. If you fry heavily, clean them every 2 weeks. Letting grease build up reduces airflow, increases odor, and creates a fire concern. A good hood should make filter removal obvious and safe without tools.
Charcoal filters are different. They are used for ductless recirculating operation and are not washable in the same way. They need replacement on a schedule, often every few months depending on cooking volume. If the hood is convertible, confirm whether it is being installed as ducted or recirculating. The same appliance can perform very differently depending on that choice.
Ductwork: The Part Homeowners Cannot See
The duct system is where many range hood projects succeed or fail. The goal is simple: move greasy, hot, smoky air outdoors with as little resistance as possible. In practice, that means smooth metal duct, correct diameter, short runs, few elbows, a good wall or roof cap, and a working damper.

A high-CFM hood may require 6-inch, 8-inch, or even 10-inch duct depending on the model. Do not assume the existing 4-inch or 5-inch duct from an old microwave is acceptable. Undersized duct raises noise, reduces real airflow, and can make a powerful hood feel weak.
Avoid flexible duct. It creates turbulence, collects grease, and is not appropriate for a permanent range hood exhaust path. Use rigid metal duct with sealed joints. Keep elbows to a minimum. Every elbow adds resistance, especially tight 90-degree turns. A short straight wall termination is usually cheaper and better than a long attic route to the roof.
Exterior termination matters too. The cap should be sized for the duct, include a damper, shed water properly, and be placed away from operable windows, doors, and intake vents as required by local code and good practice. Roof penetrations, masonry walls, soffit routing, and fireblocking can all add labor.
The 400 CFM Makeup-Air Threshold
In many U.S. jurisdictions using residential code language based on the International Residential Code, kitchen exhaust hoods over 400 CFM require makeup air at a rate roughly equal to the exhaust rate. The makeup-air system generally needs an automatic damper that opens when the hood operates. Local amendments vary, so this is a permit and inspection item, not a guess.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Makeup air matters because a strong hood pulls air out of the house. If replacement air cannot enter safely, the home can go under negative pressure. That can cause door drafts, poor hood performance, HVAC imbalance, and in some homes, combustion backdrafting from gas water heaters, furnaces, or fireplaces.
For a simple 600 CFM hood in an older, leakier home, the solution may be straightforward. For a tight newer home with combustion appliances, a 900 to 1,200 CFM hood may require a more deliberate design: motorized damper, interlock wiring, tempered makeup air, HVAC balancing, or combustion safety testing. The cost can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on the home.
Do not skip this conversation because the appliance store sells the hood without asking. The hood is only one piece of the mechanical system.
Noise: Why Some Powerful Hoods Are Miserable to Use
A hood that is too loud will not get used consistently. Noise is affected by blower design, sones, duct size, duct length, elbows, roof or wall cap restriction, and the speed setting used during real cooking. A hood may sound acceptable in a showroom and harsh once connected to a tight duct path.
For frequent cooking, look for a hood that can run at a moderate speed for daily use and ramp up for frying or tadka. Variable speeds are useful. Remote or inline blowers can reduce kitchen noise for high-CFM systems, but they add cost, wiring, access requirements, and design complexity.
The most common noise mistake is buying more blower than the duct can support. A 900 CFM hood forced through an undersized duct can sound aggressive while moving less air than expected. Before increasing CFM, verify the duct size and route.
Best Range Hood Choices by Kitchen Situation
Best Overall Setup for Most Indian Kitchens
A 30- or 36-inch ducted under-cabinet or wall-mount hood rated around 600 to 900 CFM, with stainless baffle filters and rigid duct to outdoors, is the best fit for most homes. For a 30-inch range, choose a 36-inch hood if the cabinet plan allows. For a 36-inch range, look at 36 to 42 inches depending on cooking intensity and space.
Best for Front-Burner Smoke
A side-draft or inclined hood is a strong candidate when front burners are used for frying, tempering, or wok-style cooking. These models can pull smoke closer to the pan before it spreads into the room. Expect premium pricing, commonly around $1,000 to $1,500 or more before installation.

This is mitigation, not the same as a smoke-free kitchen.
2026 Cost Guide: Hood, Ducting, and Installation
In 2026, a basic vent hood installation benchmark is about $564 to $1,030 per hood for standard conditions. That number assumes the job is relatively straightforward. The real cost can be lower when an old hood is being swapped into a compatible existing duct, or much higher when new ductwork, cabinet changes, roof work, masonry penetrations, electrical changes, or makeup air are required.
| Item | Typical 2026 Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Basic ductless or low-CFM hood | $80 to $250 | Not recommended as the main solution for frequent Indian cooking |
| Budget ducted 600 CFM stainless hood | $150 to $350 | Can work if ducting and capture area are adequate |
| Midrange 600 to 900 CFM hood | $400 to $700 | Practical sweet spot for many homes |
| Premium side-draft or pro-style hood | $1,000 to $1,500+ | Higher capture potential and finish quality, still dependent on duct design |
| Basic installation with suitable duct | $200 to $850 | Varies by retailer, access, electrical, and mounting conditions |
| Standard installation benchmark | $564 to $1,030 | Typical basic vent hood install range in 2026 |
| New ductwork and exterior venting | $1,200 to $2,500+ | Can rise with roof, masonry, attic, soffit, or long duct routes |
| Ductwork allowance | $100 to $400+ per linear foot | Access and material complexity drive the spread |
| Makeup air | Hundreds to several thousand dollars | Depends on damper type, tempering, HVAC work, and combustion safety needs |
A realistic budget for upgrading from an over-the-range microwave to a serious ducted hood is often $1,500 to $4,000 when new ducting is needed. A simple swap into an existing correct duct may be closer to $700 to $1,500 including the hood and labor. A custom cabinet insert with decorative surround, premium blower, makeup air, electrical work, and patching can exceed $5,000.
Ask for a complete quote. It should include the hood, duct size and material, number of elbows, exterior cap, damper, makeup air, electrical scope, cabinet modifications, drywall or tile patching, permits, and startup testing. A low install price that excludes ductwork is not a complete project price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
A careful homeowner can sometimes replace a same-size under-cabinet hood when the existing duct, electrical connection, mounting height, and exterior termination are already correct. That is a narrow DIY case. You still need to follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, support the hood properly, seal duct joints, and verify damper operation.
Hire a pro when you are cutting a new exterior wall or roof opening, changing duct size, routing through cabinets or attic space, working near fireblocking, moving electrical, installing a hardwired hood, adding makeup air, replacing an over-the-range microwave with a different cabinet layout, or dealing with gas appliances that could backdraft.
Permits vary by city and county, but kitchen exhaust work can involve mechanical, electrical, and sometimes building permits. Roof penetrations and exterior wall changes may also trigger inspection requirements. In a remodel, it is cheaper to coordinate this before cabinets, tile, and paint are finished than to retrofit after the kitchen is complete.

Installation Details We Check on Our Job Sites
Before rough-in, we confirm the cooktop width, hood width, mounting height, duct outlet direction, duct diameter, cabinet clearances, electrical location, and exterior termination point. We also look for conflicts with studs, joists, plumbing vents, recessed lights, upper cabinet frames, and roof framing.
During installation, we keep the duct route as straight as possible and use rigid metal duct. We seal joints, support horizontal runs, install the correct cap and damper, and make sure filters can be removed without fighting the cabinet. After installation, we run the hood at each speed, check damper movement, listen for vibration, and confirm that air is exhausting outdoors.
For stronger hoods, we also review makeup air operation. If a motorized damper is installed, it should open when the hood runs. If the home has atmospherically vented combustion appliances, combustion safety deserves more than a quick glance.
How to Use the Hood So It Actually Works
Even a good hood needs the right habits. Turn it on 5 to 10 minutes before high-heat cooking so air is already moving. Use the back burners when possible because they sit deeper under the capture area. Run the hood on a higher speed for tadka, frying, searing, roasting spices, and griddle work. Leave it running 10 to 15 minutes after cooking to clear residual particles, moisture, and odor.

Clean baffle filters regularly. Wipe grease from the hood underside. Replace charcoal filters if using a recirculating setup. If the hood suddenly sounds louder, smells worse, or captures less smoke, check filters, the damper, and the exterior cap before assuming the appliance has failed.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Do not choose a ductless hood because the advertised CFM looks high. Recirculating airflow is not the same as exhausting outdoors. Do not buy a shallow decorative hood for frequent frying and expect commercial-style performance. Do not ignore front burners. Do not mount the hood above the recommended height to preserve sightlines.
Also avoid oversizing CFM without upgrading ducts or planning makeup air. That can create noise, drafts, poor capture, HVAC imbalance, and backdraft risk. Do not reuse a small microwave duct without checking the hood manual. Do not let a custom wood hood dictate a liner that is too small. And do not skip filter maintenance; grease-loaded filters reduce airflow and hold odor.
Bottom Line
For Indian cooking, the best range hood is not simply the highest-CFM model on the shelf. The winning setup is a ducted hood with enough capture area, 600 to 900 CFM for many homes, stainless baffle filters, properly sized rigid duct, correct mounting height, and code-compliant makeup air when required.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many CFM do I need for Indian cooking?
For frequent Indian cooking, 600 to 900 CFM is a practical target for many U.S. kitchens. Light cooking may be acceptable at 300 to 400 CFM, while island cooktops, open-plan kitchens, and high-output ranges may need 900 CFM or more with proper ductwork and makeup air.
Is a ductless range hood good enough for Indian cooking?
Usually no. A ductless hood can reduce some grease and odor, but it recirculates air instead of exhausting smoke, heat, moisture, and combustion byproducts outdoors. It is a fallback for apartments or no-duct situations, not the best solution for frequent frying, tadka, or spice roasting.
Are baffle filters better than mesh filters?
For oily, frequent cooking, stainless baffle filters are generally better. They are durable, dishwasher-cleanable, and less prone to clogging than light mesh filters. Clean them monthly, or every 2 weeks if you fry several times per week.
Do I need makeup air for a 600 CFM or 900 CFM hood?
Many jurisdictions require makeup air for kitchen exhaust hoods over 400 CFM. A 600 or 900 CFM hood should be reviewed for code compliance, especially in tight homes or homes with gas water heaters, fireplaces, or other combustion appliances.
How much does it cost to install a ducted range hood in 2026?
A basic 2026 installation benchmark is about $564 to $1,030 per hood. If suitable ductwork already exists, some installs may fall around $200 to $850. When new ducting, electrical changes, roof or wall penetrations, or makeup air are needed, total project costs commonly reach $1,500 to $4,000 or more.
Can I replace an over-the-range microwave with a real range hood?
Yes, and it is often a major improvement for Indian cooking. Expect to review cabinet height, duct size, electrical location, backsplash or wall patching, and exterior venting. Many microwave ducts are too small or poorly placed for a high-performance range hood.
