How to Choose a Range Hood That Can Actually Handle Asian Cooking

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you cook with a wok, fry fish, bloom chile oil, sear meat, steam seafood, or use garlic and aromatics regularly, a standard 300 to 400 CFM range hood is often not enough. The best range hood for Asian cooking is usually a ducted hood that exhausts outdoors, covers the full cooking surface, uses durable stainless baffle filters, and has enough real-world airflow to capture smoke and grease before they spread through the house.

For most US homes in 2026, we usually recommend a ducted wall-mount or under-cabinet hood at least as wide as the cooktop, and often 6 inches wider if the kitchen layout allows. For frequent stir-frying and frying, plan around roughly 600 to 900 true CFM. For serious wok cooking, high-output gas burners, or daily heavy cooking, 900 to 1,200+ CFM may be appropriate, but that pushes the project into makeup-air, duct-sizing, and permit territory.

On our kitchen remodels, the biggest mistake we see is treating the range hood like an appliance choice made at the end. For Asian cooking, it is a ventilation system. The hood, cabinet opening, duct route, exterior termination, electrical, blower noise, and replacement air all have to work together.

What Makes Asian Cooking Hard on a Range Hood?

Asian cooking styles often create fast, concentrated bursts of heat, oil aerosol, steam, and odor. A wok on high heat can throw smoke and vapor upward and outward in seconds. Deep frying loads filters with grease quickly. Fish steaming and seafood stir-fry add moisture and odor. Garlic, scallions, ginger, curry pastes, fermented sauces, and chile oil can linger long after dinner if the hood misses the plume.

That is why a hood that looks fine on paper can fail in real use. A shallow over-the-range microwave fan may move some air, but if the front burners sit outside the capture zone, the smoke simply rolls past the hood. A ductless hood may reduce some odor temporarily with a charcoal filter, but it does not remove heat, humidity, combustion byproducts, or grease as effectively as an exterior-vented system.

The right hood for this type of cooking has four jobs: capture the plume, separate grease, move the air through properly sized ductwork, and discharge it outdoors without starving the house of replacement air.

Ducted vs. Ductless: For This Use Case, Ducted Wins

If the goal is to say goodbye to lingering cooking aromas, choose a ducted range hood whenever the home allows it. A ducted hood pulls contaminated air out of the kitchen and sends it outdoors through metal ductwork. That removes smoke, moisture, grease aerosols, odors, and pollutants created by cooking and, with gas ranges, by combustion.

A ductless hood recirculates air through grease and charcoal filters, then sends it back into the room. That can be acceptable for light cooking in a condo where exterior venting is impossible, but it is a compromise. Charcoal filters saturate, grease still accumulates, and heat and humidity stay inside.

For stir-fry, wok cooking, chile oil, and frying, ductless is usually the wrong expectation. It may make the kitchen smell slightly better for a short time, but it will not perform like a true exhaust system. If a homeowner tells us they cook heavily several nights a week, our first question is not which brand they like. It is where we can run the duct.

How Much CFM Do You Need?

CFM, or cubic feet per minute, measures airflow. It matters, but it is not the whole story. A hood advertised at 900 CFM can perform poorly if it is too shallow, mounted too high, connected to undersized duct, routed through too many elbows, or so loud that nobody uses the high setting.

For Asian cooking, use these ranges as a practical starting point:

  • Light cooking, occasional stir-fry: 400 to 600 CFM can work if the hood is ducted, correctly mounted, and covers the burners.
  • Frequent stir-fry, frying, searing, aromatic cooking: 600 to 900 CFM is a more realistic target.
  • Serious wok cooking or high-output ranges: 900 to 1,200+ CFM may be appropriate, especially with wider, deeper hoods and short duct runs.

Look for HVI-certified airflow and sound ratings where possible. HVI ratings make it easier to compare performance between manufacturers because some advertised CFM claims are not measured the same way. Also pay attention to sones, the common sound rating for range hoods. A quieter hood at 600 or 700 CFM is often more useful than a screaming 1,000 CFM hood that the family refuses to turn on.

The Hood Shape Matters as Much as the Motor

Capture area is the part most homeowners underestimate. The hood has to physically cover the path of rising smoke and steam. For high-heat cooking, especially on front burners, that means width and depth matter.

Width

At minimum, the hood should be as wide as the cooktop. For a 30-inch range, use a 30-inch hood as the floor, not the upgrade. If cabinet layout allows, a 36-inch hood over a 30-inch cooking surface gives the system a better chance to catch side spillover. For a 36-inch range, we like a 42-inch hood when the design can support it.

Depth

Many under-cabinet hoods are shallow. That is a problem for wok cooking because the smoke often rises from the front burner and curls forward. Look for deeper coverage, often 21 to 24 inches front-to-back on stronger hoods, or consider a slant/inclined design that is specifically built to pull from the front edge of the cooking zone.

Mounting Height

Follow the manufacturer’s installation range. Many wall and under-cabinet hoods are mounted roughly 24 to 30 inches above the cooking surface, though the correct height depends on the model, fuel type, and local code. Mounting too high reduces capture efficiency. Mounting too low can create clearance, heat, and usability problems.

Best Range Hood Types for Asian Cooking

There is no single perfect hood for every kitchen. The best choice depends on cooktop location, cabinet layout, duct route, ceiling height, cooking intensity, and budget.

Hood type Best use Asian cooking performance Watch-outs
Under-cabinet ducted hood Ranges under wall cabinets Good to excellent if deep enough and properly ducted Cabinet depth can limit capture; duct route must be planned
Wall-mount chimney hood Ranges on an open wall Excellent when sized wider than the cooktop Needs wall space, finished chimney, and clean duct routing
Slant or inclined vent hood Heavy front-burner cooking Strong option for wok and stir-fry when properly installed Model-specific performance varies; verify duct and clearance requirements
Island hood Cooktops in islands Usually harder to make effective Cross-drafts attack from all sides; often needs wider hood and higher CFM
Insert or liner in custom hood Custom cabinetry or plaster hood surrounds Excellent if liner depth, blower, and duct are sized correctly Requires careful design before cabinetry is built
Over-the-range microwave fan Space-saving replacement in light-use kitchens Usually weak for serious Asian cooking Shallow capture and limited effective airflow

On our job sites, the most reliable setups for heavy cooking are wall-based: a ducted under-cabinet hood, wall chimney hood, or custom insert with a straight duct path to an exterior wall or roof. Island cooking can be beautiful, but it is harder to ventilate because the hood is exposed to cross-drafts from people walking, HVAC registers, ceiling fans, and open rooms.

Features Worth Paying For

For this category, do not shop by stainless finish and CFM alone. The following features make a real difference in daily use.

Stainless Steel Baffle Filters

Choose baffle filters over light mesh filters for heavy grease cooking. Baffles are more durable, easier to clean repeatedly, and better suited to high-volume cooking. Dishwasher-safe stainless baffles are ideal. In a household that fries or stir-fries several nights a week, expect to clean filters every 2 to 4 weeks. Heavy wok cooking may require weekly cleaning.

Proper Duct Diameter

Higher-CFM hoods often need 6-inch, 8-inch, or 10-inch metal duct, depending on the model. Do not reduce duct size unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it. A powerful blower connected to a too-small duct becomes noisy and underperforms. Avoid flexible duct for grease exhaust. Use smooth galvanized or stainless metal duct with sealed joints and an approved wall cap or roof cap.

Low-Noise Operation

Noise matters because the best hood is the one people actually turn on. Multi-speed controls help. For heavy cooking, we like a hood that can run quietly at a moderate setting for normal prep and still has a high setting for searing, frying, and wok cooking.

Real Controls and Lighting

Bright LED task lighting, easy fan controls, and a delayed shutoff timer are useful. The right routine is to start the hood before the pan gets hot, cook with the hood running, then let it run 10 to 20 minutes after cooking to clear residual moisture and odor.

Brand and Model Categories to Consider

Instead of treating this as a beauty contest between individual models, we look for the right category of hood. Asian-cooking-oriented slant hoods, including FOTILE’s inclined designs marketed around 600 actual CFM or 1,000 equivalent CFM, are built around front-edge capture. Pro-style ducted hoods from brands such as Zephyr, Vent-A-Hood, Broan Elite, Kobe, Hauslane, Proline, and ZLINE can also work well when the specific model has the right width, depth, duct size, filter design, and certified performance.

For a typical 30-inch range used for frequent stir-fry, we would rather see a properly ducted 36-inch hood with strong capture and baffles than a flashy 30-inch hood with a huge advertised number and a poor duct path. For a serious wok station, start the design around the cooking equipment and ventilation together. That may mean a wider hood, deeper canopy, 8-inch or 10-inch duct, and a planned makeup-air solution.

Installation Costs in 2026

Installed range hood costs vary widely because the appliance is only one part of the project. Nationally, a typical installed range hood often falls around $650 to $2,500, with average projects near $1,750. Homewyse’s May 2026 baseline for installing a vent hood starts around $564 to $1,030 per hood before major duct rerouting, cabinet work, upgraded electrical, or makeup-air work.

For Asian cooking, expect to be closer to the higher end if the home does not already have a good duct route. New ductwork can add roughly $100 to $400+ per linear foot depending on access, duct size, wall or ceiling routing, roof versus wall termination, and finish repair.

Project scope Typical 2026 cost range What is included
Basic replacement using existing duct $200 to $850 labor, plus hood Remove old hood, install new compatible hood, connect existing duct and power
Standard ducted hood install $650 to $2,500 total Common installed range for many US kitchens
New duct route added $1,200 to $2,500+ Hood install plus new exterior venting, with cost depending on access and finishes
High-CFM or pro-style setup $2,000 to $5,000+ Larger hood, bigger duct, possible cabinet changes, electrical, and makeup air
Custom hood insert $3,000+ before complex finish work Insert, liner, custom surround, blower selection, and detailed carpentry coordination

Appliance-only pricing also ranges widely. Budget under-cabinet hoods can be under $200 to $500. Better ducted stainless models commonly run $500 to $1,200. Asian-cooking-focused slant hoods and pro-style hoods often land around $900 to $2,000+. Custom inserts, remote blowers, and designer hoods can exceed $3,000 before installation.

Makeup Air, Permits, and Safety

High-CFM exhaust removes a lot of air from the house. That air has to be replaced. Under residential mechanical code language used in many jurisdictions, domestic kitchen exhaust systems over 400 CFM often require makeup air that is approximately equal to the exhausted air and automatically controlled to operate with the hood. Local amendments vary, so this is a permit and inspection item, not a guess.

A cracked window can help a homeowner understand the concept of replacement air, but it is not a code-compliant automatic makeup-air system in many places. A proper system may include a motorized damper, dedicated duct, controls tied to the hood, and sometimes tempering through the HVAC system so the incoming air is not freezing in winter or humid in summer.

This matters for comfort and safety. A large hood can depressurize a tight home. That can affect fireplaces, atmospherically vented water heaters, furnaces, and other combustion appliances. On remodels, we check for backdraft risk, duct termination location, damper operation, and whether the system needs HVAC coordination before drywall and cabinets close everything in.

Never vent a range hood into an attic, crawlspace, soffit, or wall cavity. Kitchen exhaust carries grease and moisture. It belongs outdoors through an approved termination with a backdraft damper and pest screen compatible with grease exhaust.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

A simple same-size replacement can be a reasonable DIY project for a skilled homeowner if the existing duct is correctly sized, the electrical connection is already in place, the hood weight is manageable, and the new model’s installation requirements match the old opening. Even then, verify the duct actually goes outdoors. We have opened cabinets and found old hoods blowing into dead spaces.

Hire a pro when you are adding ductwork, cutting a roof or exterior wall, changing cabinet layout, replacing an over-the-range microwave with a larger hood, installing a hood over 400 CFM, working around gas appliances, or adding makeup air. Also bring in help if the hood is heavy, the wall framing needs blocking, or the backsplash and cabinets are already finished.

For a kitchen remodel, specify the hood before cabinet drawings are final. That lets the builder coordinate cabinet height, hood width, duct chase, outlet placement, blocking, backsplash layout, and exterior termination. Solving ventilation after cabinets, tile, and roofing are complete is almost always more expensive.

Common Reasons Cooking Smells Still Linger

If your current hood runs but the house still smells like last night’s dinner, the problem is usually one or more of these:

  • The hood is ductless or venting into a cabinet, attic, or soffit.
  • The hood is too shallow and misses smoke from the front burners.
  • The fan is underpowered for high-heat cooking.
  • The duct is too small, too long, or has too many elbows.
  • The hood is mounted too high above the cooktop.
  • The filters are loaded with grease.
  • The damper is stuck or the exterior cap is restricted.
  • The hood is turned on too late and shut off too soon.
  • The home is too tight and the hood cannot get enough replacement air.

A good commissioning checklist after installation includes verifying every fan speed, confirming exterior discharge, checking that dampers open and close, listening for vibration, inspecting for cabinet air leaks, confirming filter fit, and watching for any backdrafting risk at combustion appliances.

Our Practical Recommendation

For most homeowners who cook Asian food regularly, the best answer is not the cheapest hood with the biggest advertised number. It is a ducted, exterior-vented hood with real capture area, stainless baffle filters, a short and properly sized duct run, sound levels the family can live with, and a makeup-air plan if the system exceeds 400 CFM.

For a 30-inch range used for frequent stir-fry, start with a 30- to 36-inch ducted hood in the 600 to 900 CFM range, using smooth 6- to 8-inch metal duct if the manufacturer allows. For a 36-inch range or serious wok cooking, look at 42-inch coverage where possible, 900 to 1,200+ CFM, deeper capture, and 8- to 10-inch duct depending on the hood. If the range is on an island, expect to size more aggressively and control cross-drafts.

The cleanest results come when ventilation is designed with the kitchen, not bolted on afterward. If you are remodeling, decide on the cooking equipment and range hood early. That is when the duct path is still affordable, the cabinets can be built around the hood, and the finished kitchen can actually handle the way you cook.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many CFM do I need for Asian cooking?

For frequent stir-frying, frying, searing, and aromatic cooking, plan around 600 to 900 true CFM in a ducted hood. For serious wok cooking or high-output ranges, 900 to 1,200+ CFM may be appropriate, but the duct size, hood depth, mounting height, and makeup-air requirements matter just as much as the CFM number.

Is a ductless range hood enough for stir-frying or wok cooking?

Usually no. A ductless hood can filter some grease and odor, but it recirculates air back into the kitchen. It does not remove heat, moisture, combustion byproducts, or heavy grease as effectively as a ducted hood that exhausts outdoors.

Do I need makeup air for a 600 CFM or 900 CFM hood?

Many jurisdictions require automatic makeup air for domestic kitchen exhaust systems over 400 CFM. A 600, 900, or 1,200 CFM hood should be reviewed for local code compliance, pressure balance, and backdraft risk, especially in tighter homes or homes with gas appliances.

What type of range hood is best for Asian cooking?

A ducted wall-mount, under-cabinet, slant vent, or custom insert can all work well if sized correctly. Wall-based hoods usually perform better than island hoods because they are less exposed to cross-drafts. The hood should be at least as wide as the cooktop and preferably wider for heavy cooking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much does it cost to install a ducted range hood in 2026?

Typical installed costs run about $650 to $2,500, with averages near $1,750. A basic replacement using existing ductwork can be much less, while new ductwork, roof penetrations, cabinet changes, electrical work, and makeup air can push high-CFM installations to $2,000 to $5,000+.

Can I replace an over-the-range microwave with a real range hood?

Yes, and it is often one of the best upgrades for homeowners who cook heavily. The project may require cabinet modification, new duct routing, electrical adjustments, backsplash work, and possibly makeup air if the new hood exceeds 400 CFM.
