March Lawn Care: What to Do Now, What to Wait On, and What It Should Cost

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

March is the month to get your lawn ready, not the month to force it awake. The right work depends on where you live, what grass you have, how wet the soil is, and whether the lawn is actually growing. In northern states, March may still mean frozen soil, snow mold, and soft ground. In the transition zone, crabgrass prevention and cleanup may be right on schedule. In the South, warm-season turf may be starting to green up, but fertilizer still needs to follow local timing and soil-test guidance.

On our construction and site-prep work, we see the same pattern every spring: homeowners spend money on seed, fertilizer, and weed control, but the real problem is often drainage, compaction, bad grading, downspout discharge, or hardscape runoff. A lawn cannot perform like a finished landscape if the soil below it is holding water, packed hard from traffic, or missing usable topsoil.

Use March as a decision month. Walk the property, test the soil, check soil temperature, clean up winter debris, tune equipment, and schedule the work that needs a dry window. Do not aerate saturated ground, do not scalp dormant grass, do not fertilize cold turf just because the calendar says spring, and do not apply pre-emergent where you plan to seed unless the label specifically allows it.

Start With a March Lawn Inspection

Before buying products, walk the entire lawn with a notebook or your phone. A good March inspection takes 30 to 60 minutes on a typical residential lot and can prevent hundreds or thousands of dollars in wasted work later.

Look for standing water, snow mold, matted leaves, vole trails, salt injury near roads and walks, plow damage, bare soil, compacted paths, low spots, gutter outlets, downspouts, sump discharge points, and places where roof or driveway runoff crosses the turf. Mark areas that stay soft more than 24 to 48 hours after a normal rain. Those are not fertilizer problems. They are water movement, soil structure, or grading problems.

Pay close attention to edges along driveways, patios, sidewalks, and retaining walls. Hard surfaces shed water fast. If that water is concentrated onto a narrow strip of lawn, you will usually see thinning, washout, moss, weeds, or winter heaving. A $40 bag of seed will not fix a slope that keeps washing away.

Check Whether the Soil Is Ready for Work

Step on the lawn. If your footprint stays visible, if water squeezes up, or if soil sticks to your boots in clumps, stay off it. Raking, aerating, dethatching, or running a mower over wet soil can compact the root zone and leave ruts. That damage often lasts longer than the winter problem you were trying to fix.

For most March work, the lawn should be firm enough to walk on without sinking. Debris cleanup can happen earlier if you work lightly. Aeration, dethatching, overseeding, and grading corrections need drier soil and active growth conditions.

Know Your Grass Type Before You Touch Fertilizer or Seed

March lawn care is not one national checklist. Cool-season grasses and warm-season grasses wake up on different schedules and respond differently to early spring work.

Cool-season lawns include tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescues. They are common in the North, Midwest, Northeast, and many transition-zone lawns. These grasses grow strongly in spring and fall, but in cold March weather they may still be dormant or only beginning to move.

Warm-season lawns include bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede, and bahia. They are common across the South and lower transition zone. These grasses need warmer soil and air temperatures before they are ready for aggressive fertility, renovation, or regular mowing.

The biggest March mistake is treating a dormant warm-season lawn like a cool-season lawn, or treating a wet northern lawn like a southern lawn that is already growing. Timing by region, grass type, and soil temperature is more reliable than timing by calendar date.

Use Soil Temperature for Crabgrass Prevention

Pre-emergent herbicide is one of the few March lawn treatments where timing matters down to the week. Crabgrass germination is driven by soil temperature. A practical target is to apply pre-emergent when 0 to 2 inch soil temperatures approach 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, before sustained germination conditions settle into the mid-to-upper 50s.

Forsythia bloom is a useful visual cue in many neighborhoods, but soil temperature is more defensible. Use a soil thermometer, a local university extension soil-temperature map, or a weather-based turf tool. Measure in the top 2 inches of soil in the part of the lawn that warms first, usually sunny south-facing areas near pavement.

For many transition-zone lawns, pre-emergent may fall in March. In northern lawns, it may be late March or April. In parts of the South, the first application may already be due or completed by March, with split applications used where labels and local practice support them.

Do Not Apply Pre-Emergent Where You Plan to Seed

Most crabgrass pre-emergents prevent seed germination. That includes desirable grass seed. If you apply a standard pre-emergent in March, you may have to delay seeding for weeks or months depending on the product label. If you have bare soil that must be seeded now, choose the plan first: weed prevention or spring seeding. Trying to do both on the same square footage is where homeowners waste money.

There are specialty products that can be used with certain seeding programs, but the label controls the decision. Follow the product rate, grass-type restrictions, re-entry instructions, and watering requirement exactly.

Soil Testing Comes Before Fertilizing

A soil test is one of the highest-value March lawn tasks. It tells you soil pH, phosphorus and potassium levels, and often organic matter or amendment recommendations. Without that information, lime and fertilizer decisions are guesswork.

For an average lawn, take 10 to 15 small soil cores from the same management area, mix them in a clean bucket, and submit the sample according to the lab directions. Sample depth is commonly around 3 to 4 inches for established turf, but follow your local lab instructions. Keep front yard, back yard, problem areas, and new construction areas separate if they have different conditions.

Soil pH matters because grass cannot use nutrients efficiently outside its preferred range. Lime is not a spring cure-all. Phosphorus should not be applied unless the soil test, seed establishment need, or local rule supports it. Many areas restrict phosphorus use because runoff contributes to water-quality problems.

March Fertilizer Timing

In cold regions, do not fertilize simply because it is March. Early spring nitrogen can push top growth while roots are still recovering and soil is cold. For many northern cool-season lawns, a heavier fertility program belongs later in spring or in fall, not on a cold, wet March weekend.

In warmer areas where turf is actively growing, fertilizer may be appropriate if soil-test results and local guidance support it. Apply only the recommended rate. Keep fertilizer off sidewalks, driveways, patios, and streets. Sweep granules back onto the turf instead of washing them into the gutter. Do not apply before heavy rain or during windy conditions.

After soluble fertilizer, many professional programs use light irrigation, about 0.25 to 0.50 inches, to move nutrients off leaf blades and into the soil. That is not the same as soaking the yard. The goal is to reduce burn risk and nutrient loss, not create runoff.

Clean Up the Lawn Without Damaging It

March cleanup should be light and deliberate. Remove branches, litter, heavy leaf mats, and debris that blocks light or traps moisture. Use a leaf rake or blower where the turf is weak. Avoid aggressive steel-rake work on dormant or saturated grass.

Snow mold often looks worse than it is. Lightly rake matted areas once dry enough, improve airflow, and give the lawn time to resume growth. Vole trails can usually be raked and allowed to fill in if the crowns are alive. Bare soil larger than a dinner plate should be marked for seeding or repair once conditions are right.

Salt-damaged strips along walks and driveways may need flushing with rainfall or irrigation after thaw, followed by soil improvement and reseeding. If salt injury repeats every winter, consider snow-storage location, deicer choice, drainage path, and whether the lawn edge needs a more durable planting or hardscape border.

When to Mow in March

Mow only when the lawn is actively growing and the soil can support the mower without rutting. The first mow should be boring. Sharp blade, dry lawn, high deck, no scalping.

A common best practice is to remove no more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. For many cool-season lawns, maintaining a height around 3.5 to 4 inches through active growth improves shade on the soil surface and supports deeper roots. Warm-season mowing heights vary by species and mower type, so bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, and centipede should follow local grass-specific guidance.

If the lawn grew tall over winter in a mild climate, bring it down gradually over two or three mowings instead of cutting it short in one pass. Scalping exposes crowns, encourages weeds, and can make spring color worse, not better.

Aeration, Dethatching, and Overseeding: Usually Not Automatic March Jobs

Core aeration helps compacted lawns, but timing matters. Do not aerate saturated soil. The machine can smear the holes, tear turf, and leave ruts. Aeration works best when the grass is actively growing and can recover.

For cool-season lawns, fall is often the preferred season for major aeration and overseeding. Spring can work for repairs, especially in the transition zone, but crabgrass pressure and pre-emergent conflicts make it more complicated. For warm-season lawns, aeration is usually better after full green-up and active growth, not while the lawn is partially dormant.

Dethatching is also not a default March task. A true thatch problem is an excessive layer of dead and living material between the green blades and soil surface. A half inch or more may justify action depending on turf type. Light brown winter debris is not the same thing as thatch. Power raking a stressed March lawn can set it back hard.

When March Overseeding Makes Sense

March overseeding may make sense for small bare areas, erosion-prone spots that cannot wait, or cool-season lawns in milder regions where soil temperatures support germination. Good seed-to-soil contact matters. Loosen the surface, apply the right seed blend, cover lightly with compost or clean topdressing, and keep the area consistently moist during germination.

For larger renovations, price the full scope before starting. If the lawn has poor grade, heavy compaction, shallow topsoil, or irrigation problems, seed alone may fail. Fix the base conditions first.

Drainage and Grading Matter More Than Spring Products

Many March lawn problems are construction problems in disguise. Thin turf below a downspout, moss in a low swale, repeated washout beside a driveway, or soggy soil near a retaining wall usually points to water movement and soil structure.

On our job sites, we look at where water starts, where it concentrates, and where it exits. A healthy lawn needs positive drainage away from the house, stable soil, and enough topsoil to support roots. If roof water dumps onto the same 6-foot strip of grass all spring, fertilizer is not going to solve the problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common fixes include extending downspouts 6 to 10 feet from the foundation where allowed, regrading shallow low spots, adding soil amendments, installing a properly designed swale, correcting compacted construction soil, repairing retaining-wall drainage, or adding subsurface drainage where surface grading cannot handle the water.

Do not bury drainage pipe or change grades without understanding where the water will discharge. Moving water from your yard into a neighbor’s yard, sidewalk, street, or foundation area can create a larger problem and may violate local rules.

Irrigation Startup and Backflow Checks

March is a good time to inspect irrigation before the lawn actually needs routine watering. In cold climates, full startup may wait until the risk of hard freeze has passed. In warmer climates, check the system before dry weather exposes weak zones.

Run each zone long enough to inspect heads, valves, spray pattern, leaks, clogged nozzles, tilted heads, overspray onto pavement, and dry gaps. A simple catch-cup audit can show whether the lawn is getting even coverage. Place identical cups across a zone, run the system for 10 to 15 minutes, and compare depths. Large differences usually mean pressure, spacing, nozzle, or head-to-head coverage issues.

Backflow prevention is a safety and code issue, not just a sprinkler part. Many jurisdictions require approved backflow devices for irrigation systems, and some require permits, inspections, or annual testing. Rules vary by city, county, and water provider. Before installing, replacing, or reconnecting a sprinkler system, check local requirements.

If your system has a damaged pressure vacuum breaker, reduced pressure assembly, double-check valve, or other backflow component, hire a qualified irrigation or plumbing professional where licensing is required. This is especially true if the repair touches potable water connections.

March Lawn Care Costs in 2026

Prices vary by region, lawn size, slope, access, crew minimums, fuel costs, service frequency, and whether the lawn needs cleanup or repair before routine care. A small, flat, easy-access front lawn prices very differently from a fenced, sloped, overgrown yard with wet soil and narrow gates.

Service or material Typical 2026 U.S. cost Best March use
Routine professional mowing $30 to $85 per visit on many standard lots; broader quotes may run $50 to $150 Start only after active growth and firm soil
Full-service lawn care plan About $100 to $410 per month; often $1,500 to $3,500 annually with mowing, fertilization, aeration, and cleanup Useful for homeowners who want scheduled seasonal care
Hourly lawn labor About $35 to $90 per hour Cleanup, edging, repair prep, small drainage tasks
Fertilization treatment Roughly $64 to $405 per treatment, or about $0.12 to $0.32 per square foot Use only when soil, growth stage, and local rules support it
Core aeration Commonly $75 to $250; larger lawns may price around $0.03 to $0.05 per square foot Wait for dry-enough soil and active growth
Dethatching About $65 to $300 Only for confirmed thatch, not routine brown spring turf
Overseeding or reseeding About $300 to $1,350 nationally, or $0.04 to $0.18 per square foot Best where pre-emergent conflict and irrigation are planned
Aeration plus overseeding Often $200 to $800, or $0.04 to $0.08 per square foot Good for compacted cool-season lawns when timing is right
Reseeding renovation Often $1 to $3 per square foot For failed lawns where soil prep is included
Resodding Often $1.50 to $4.00 per square foot For fast replacement after grading, soil, or irrigation corrections
Sprinkler installation About $0.29 to $0.48 per square foot Plan before peak season; verify backflow rules
Sprinkler repair About $59 to $1,354 depending on heads, valves, leaks, controller, and backflow work Inspect before regular watering starts

For budgeting, separate maintenance from correction. Mowing, fertilizer, and weed control maintain a lawn that already has good soil and drainage. Grading, soil replacement, irrigation repair, and sod renovation correct the conditions that keep causing failure.

Regional March Lawn Care Checklist

North and Upper Midwest Cool-Season Lawns

Focus on inspection, light cleanup, equipment service, soil testing, and staying off wet ground. Delay heavy fertilization if the lawn is dormant or barely growing. Watch for snow mold, salt injury, plow damage, and vole trails. Pre-emergent may not be due until late March or April depending on soil temperature.

Transition Zone Lawns

This is the most complicated region because both cool-season and warm-season lawns are common. Tall fescue may be waking up while bermuda or zoysia is still partially dormant. Soil-temperature tracking is especially useful here. Pre-emergent timing may land in March. Be careful with overseeding plans because weed prevention and seed germination can conflict.

South and Warm-Season Lawns

Clean up debris, monitor green-up, check irrigation, and time weed prevention according to soil temperature and local guidance. Avoid pushing fertilizer before the lawn is actively growing. Warm-season turf should not be forced with nitrogen while it is still dormant or unevenly green.

Arid West and Irrigated Lawns

Water management is the priority. Check sprinkler uniformity, overspray, pressure, and controller settings before regular irrigation ramps up. Soil testing still matters, especially where salts, alkaline pH, or poor infiltration affect turf. Avoid runoff from compacted or sloped areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense for a careful homeowner when the work is low-risk and easy to correct. March tasks such as debris cleanup, mower blade sharpening, soil sampling, soil-temperature checks, light spot repair, and basic irrigation observation are good DIY jobs. Material costs are usually modest, and the main requirement is patience.

Hire a lawn care professional for calibrated pre-emergent or fertilizer applications if you are unsure about rates, timing, or product compatibility. A pro is also worth considering for large lawns, steep slopes, repeated weed failures, or properties where service consistency matters more than saving the per-visit cost.

Hire a construction, drainage, irrigation, or landscape professional when the issue is structural. Chronic standing water, bad grading, retaining-wall drainage problems, compacted construction soil, failed sod, hardscape runoff, and sprinkler backflow work are not simple lawn-care chores. These problems usually require layout, elevations, soil correction, pipe routing, code awareness, and equipment.

A good rule: if the symptom returns in the same place after two rounds of seed or fertilizer, stop treating the surface and diagnose the site condition.

What Not to Do in March

Do not fertilize dormant grass just to make it green faster. Do not aerate or dethatch saturated soil. Do not scalp the lawn on the first mow. Do not seed an area and then apply a standard pre-emergent over it. Do not spread fertilizer onto pavement and rinse it into the street. Do not run irrigation on a fixed summer schedule in March. Do not ignore water that sits against the house or crosses the lawn from a roof, driveway, or patio.

March rewards restraint. The best results usually come from doing the right work in the right order: inspect, test, correct drainage and compaction, time weed prevention, mow only when growing, and fertilize only when the lawn can use it.

A Practical March Plan for Homeowners

Week one, inspect the lawn and hardscape edges. Mark wet areas, bare spots, winter damage, salt injury, and runoff paths. Service the mower, sharpen the blade, and check hand tools.

Week two, take soil samples and start tracking soil temperature. Clean debris lightly when the lawn is firm enough. Decide whether spring seeding is necessary before buying pre-emergent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Week three, apply pre-emergent if soil temperatures and local timing support it. Keep product off pavement and water it in according to the label. Continue delaying fertilizer if the lawn is dormant, wet, or cold.

Week four, mow only if active growth has resumed. Inspect irrigation zones in warmer regions or schedule startup in colder regions after freeze risk drops. Price professional work early if you need aeration, overseeding, drainage correction, or sprinkler repair, because spring schedules fill quickly.

The strongest March lawn care plan is not the longest checklist. It is the one that respects the lawn’s growth stage and fixes the site conditions beneath the grass. Get those decisions right, and the rest of the spring program becomes simpler, cheaper, and more predictable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do to my lawn in March?

Inspect winter damage, clear heavy debris, test the soil, track 0 to 2 inch soil temperature, service the mower, check drainage, and plan pre-emergent timing. Mow, fertilize, aerate, or seed only when grass type, soil moisture, and local conditions support it.

Is March too early to fertilize my lawn?

In many northern cool-season lawns, yes. If the grass is dormant, cold, or sitting in wet soil, wait. In warmer regions where turf is actively growing, fertilizer may be appropriate if a soil test and local rules support the application.

When should I apply pre-emergent in March?

Apply crabgrass pre-emergent when 0 to 2 inch soil temperatures approach about 50 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, before sustained germination conditions in the mid-to-upper 50s. Do not rely on a fixed calendar date.

Can I overseed my lawn in March?

Sometimes, but it depends on grass type, soil temperature, moisture, and weed-control plans. Standard pre-emergent can stop grass seed from germinating, so choose between seeding and pre-emergent on the same area unless the product label allows both.

Should I aerate or dethatch my lawn in March?

Not automatically. Avoid aerating or dethatching wet, dormant, or stressed turf. Core aeration works best when the lawn is actively growing and soil is moist but firm, not saturated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a permit for a lawn sprinkler system or backflow preventer?

Many local water providers and building departments require approved backflow prevention, permits, inspections, or testing for irrigation systems. Requirements vary by jurisdiction, so check local rules before installation, replacement, or reconnection.
