Best Air Fryers Under $40: What to Buy, What to Avoid, and How to Use One Safely

If you are shopping for the best air fryer under $40 in 2026, the honest answer is this: buy a compact, certified, easy-clean model from a known retailer, and do not chase the largest no-name unit with inflated capacity claims. Under $40 is a real price bracket, but it is narrow. Most good options are 2-quart basket air fryers for one person, dorm-style cooking, small apartments, snacks, or side dishes. Occasionally, a 3- to 4-quart model drops under $40 during a sale, and that can be the better buy if the brand, return policy, and safety listing check out.

We look at small appliances through a builder’s lens because countertop tools are not just cooking gadgets. They affect how a kitchen works. On our job sites, we pay attention to outlet placement, counter depth, cabinet clearances, heat exposure, cord routing, and circuit load because those details decide whether an appliance is convenient or annoying. A $35 air fryer can be a good purchase. It can also expose the weak spots in an older kitchen: crowded counters, worn receptacles, shared circuits, and cabinets that sit too low over a heat-producing appliance.

For most buyers, the best under-$40 air fryer is a 2-quart digital or simple analog basket model around 900 to 1,200 watts, with a removable nonstick basket, dishwasher-safe parts if available, a clear warranty, and a retailer return window. If you cook for two or more people several nights a week, consider stretching to the $40 to $60 sale range for a 4- to 6-quart model. That extra $10 to $20 often buys more usable basket area, fewer batches, and less frustration.

What You Can Realistically Buy Under $40

The under-$40 air fryer market is not the same as the mainstream budget market. Many professional-style roundups treat $80 to $120 as the budget range. Premium basket, dual-basket, stainless, glass, and air-fryer toaster-oven models commonly run $150 to $250 or more. Under $40 is entry-level or promotional territory.

  • 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙐𝙥𝙜𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙚: The 6-quart square basket offers a wide, deep design, great for the entire family meals while saving you space on your kitchen counter or cabinet

In current 2026 retail pricing, the realistic sweet spot is $30 to $40. Examples in that range include a Chefman TurboFry 2-Quart Digital Air Fryer around $34.99 during a retail discount and a bella PRO 4-quart touchscreen slim model around $39.99 during a sale. Those prices can change quickly, which is why the buying strategy matters more than any single model name.

Below $30, expect very small 1.5- to 2-quart models, marketplace brands, limited warranty support, and more homework on safety certification and seller reputation. Between $40 and $60, you start seeing more practical 4- to 6-quart sale models from major retailers. For a household of two, that $40 to $60 range is often the better long-term value.

Price Range Typical Capacity Best For Builder’s Take
Under $30 1.5 to 2 quarts Snacks, one-person portions, occasional use Be careful with no-name marketplace units. Check certification, warranty, reviews, and recall history.
$30 to $40 Mostly 2 quarts; occasional 3 to 4 quarts on sale Singles, small kitchens, dorm-style use, quick sides The best true under-$40 bracket. Prioritize a known retailer, compact footprint, and easy cleaning.
$40 to $60 4 to 6 quarts on sale Couples, small families, frequent weeknight cooking Often the smartest upgrade. More basket area means better browning and fewer batches.
$80 to $120 4 to 8 quarts Regular family use and stronger controls Mainstream budget range with better performance and support.
$150 and up Large, dual-basket, oven-style, glass, or premium builds Heavy use and multi-function cooking Useful for some kitchens, but outside the under-$40 decision.

Our Shortlist: The Best Types of Air Fryers Under $40

Because sale prices move week to week, the more reliable way to shop is by category. These are the under-$40 air fryer types worth considering, along with who should buy each one.

Best Overall Under $40: A 2-Quart Digital Basket Air Fryer

For most people shopping under $40, a 2-quart digital basket air fryer is the safest target. Look for a model around $35 to $40, roughly 900 to 1,200 watts, with a removable crisper tray, nonstick basket, automatic shutoff, and temperature controls up to about 400 degrees F. A 2-quart basket is not a family appliance, but it can handle a single serving of fries, vegetables, chicken tenders, reheated pizza, or a small salmon fillet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The advantage of a digital model is repeatability. If you cook the same foods often, push-button temperature and time settings are easier to repeat than a loose analog dial. That matters with small baskets because a few minutes can separate crisp food from dried-out food.

Best for One Person: Compact 1.5- to 2-Quart Model

A compact unit makes sense when counter space is tight. Many older kitchens have 24-inch-deep counters but limited clear landing areas because the coffee maker, knife block, toaster, and dish rack are already fighting for space. A small air fryer can be stored in a lower cabinet and pulled out when needed.

For one person, 2 quarts is usually enough for snacks and simple meals. For two adults, it becomes cramped. Air fryers work best when food is spread in a single layer. If you stack food high to make the capacity number work, airflow drops, cooking slows, and browning becomes uneven.

Best Sale Find: A 4-Quart Model Under $40

If you find a 4-quart model under $40 from a known retailer, it deserves a close look. A 4-quart basket is more useful for two people than a 2-quart basket because the base area is larger. You can cook more food in a single layer, which is what creates the crisp texture people expect from an air fryer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The caution is quality. At this price, a larger unit may cut corners on controls, coating durability, warranty, or support. Check the model number, return policy, safety listing, and recall status before buying. A discounted 4-quart air fryer from a major retailer is different from a no-name oversized listing with vague specifications.

  • SHAKE NOTIFICATIONS: Get notified with an audible alarm halfway through cooking, reminding you to shake your food for the crispiest results possible

Best Simple Option: Analog Controls

An analog air fryer with two dials, one for time and one for temperature, can be a good budget choice. There is less interface to fail, and many people use only three settings anyway: 350 degrees F, 375 degrees F, and 400 degrees F. The tradeoff is precision. Cheap dials can feel loose, and small changes on the dial may not be exact.

Choose analog if you want simple operation and do not care about presets. Choose digital if you want cleaner repeatability and a timer display you can read across the kitchen.

Best Easy-Clean Choice: Removable Basket and Crisper Tray

Cleaning is where many cheap air fryers either earn their keep or get abandoned. Look for a basket that slides out smoothly, a crisper tray that lifts out, and parts listed by the manufacturer as dishwasher-safe. Avoid designs with deep seams, exposed screw pockets inside the food area, or a basket coating that feels thin and rough from the start.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

We also like models with replacement baskets or trays available from the manufacturer. If a $35 unit has no parts support, a scratched basket can turn it into a short-life appliance.

How Big Should an Under-$40 Air Fryer Be?

Quart capacity is useful, but it is not the whole story. A tall, narrow basket may advertise the same capacity as a wider basket, but the wider basket cooks better because the food can spread out. Air frying depends on moving hot air around the food. That is why the usable cooking area matters more than the headline quart number.

As a rough guide, a 2-quart unit works for one person or snacks. A 3- to 4-quart unit is better for one to two people. A 5- to 6-quart model is more practical for two adults who cook full meals several times a week. A family of four should usually look beyond the under-$40 bracket unless the appliance is only for sides and reheating.

Some retailer category guidance describes 1- to 4-quart models as suitable for 2 to 4 people. In real kitchens, that is optimistic for full meals. If you want crisp food, leave space between pieces. A crowded basket can add several minutes, require shaking or turning, and still produce pale spots.

Countertop Fit: Measure Before You Buy

This is the part most appliance lists skip. Before buying any air fryer, measure the kitchen. You need counter depth, usable width, cabinet clearance, storage height, and cord reach to a wall receptacle. A bargain appliance is not a bargain if it has to sit halfway over the counter edge or vent heat into the underside of a cabinet.

  • GUILT-FREE FRIED FOODS: Up to 75% less fat than traditional air frying methods. Tested against hand-cut, deep-fried French fries.
  • FROZEN TO CRISPY: Cook frozen foods in just minutes for an extra-crispy finish.

Most standard kitchen counters are about 24 inches deep. Wall cabinets above them are often set around 18 inches above the counter, though older or custom kitchens vary. A compact 2-quart air fryer may fit comfortably under upper cabinets for storage, but that does not mean it should run there. Heat and steam need room to escape.

Use this checklist before buying:

  • Leave at least 5 inches behind the air fryer unless the manual requires more.
  • Keep both sides open enough for ventilation.
  • Do not run the appliance inside a closed appliance garage.
  • Do not press the rear vent against drywall, tile, backsplash trim, curtains, paper towels, or wood panels.
  • Keep the cord fully on the counter, not stretched across a sink, cooktop, walkway, or drawer front.
  • Confirm the plug reaches a wall receptacle without an extension cord.

Heat-resistant counter mats can help protect laminate, butcher block, and some delicate surfaces, but they are not a substitute for clearance. If the appliance exhausts hot air at the back, the backsplash and underside of the cabinet still need protection from repeated heat exposure.

Electrical Load: The Kitchen Circuit May Be the Real Limit

A small air fryer can draw a serious load. Many compact air fryers run around 900 to 1,500 watts, and common buying ranges put typical air fryers around 1,200 to 1,700 watts. The math is simple: watts divided by volts equals amps. A 1,500-watt appliance on a 120-volt circuit draws about 12.5 amps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That is a large share of a 15-amp circuit. It is still meaningful on a 20-amp kitchen small-appliance circuit if the coffee maker, toaster, microwave, or electric kettle is running at the same time. If the breaker trips when you use the air fryer and microwave together, the appliance may not be defective. The circuit may simply be overloaded.

Modern kitchens are typically planned with small-appliance branch circuits and GFCI protection in the right locations, but older kitchens are not always updated evenly. We see homes where a countertop receptacle shares load with lighting, a dining room outlet, or an older appliance circuit. That setup may have worked fine before countertop cooking became daily routine.

Do not use an extension cord with an air fryer. Do not plug it into a power strip. Do not run it from a loose, cracked, warm, or sparking receptacle. If the plug fits loosely or the outlet face is discolored, stop using that location until it is evaluated.

Safety Checks Before You Cook

Cheap does not have to mean unsafe, but the under-$40 category deserves more diligence. Look for a product that is listed or certified by a recognized safety organization, sold by a known retailer, and supported by a clear warranty. Appliance standards and third-party certification exist for a reason: heating elements, plastic housings, cords, switches, and controls all need to perform safely under repeated heat cycles.

Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission recall database before buying clearance, refurbished, marketplace, or secondhand air fryers. This matters because recalls do happen. In February 2023, about 2 million Cosori air fryers were recalled because overheating wire connections created fire and burn hazards. In March 2024, about 187,400 Insignia air fryers and air fryer ovens were recalled because units could overheat, handles could melt or break, and oven glass could shatter.

  • SEPARATE HEATING ZONES: 2 independent 4-quart zones have their own cooking baskets, cyclonic fans, and rapid heaters.
  • EASY CLEANING: Easy-to-clean baskets and dishwasher-safe crisper plates.

That does not mean every appliance from a recalled brand is unsafe. It means model numbers matter. Before buying used or clearance inventory, compare the exact model number, date code if available, and product photos against recall notices. If a seller cannot provide the model number, pass.

First Run and Food Safety

Read the manual before the first use. Many new heating appliances need an initial empty run or a test cycle as directed by the manufacturer. A brief odor during first use can come from manufacturing residues burning off, but heavy smoke, melting plastic smell, visible deformation, or electrical odor is not normal.

For cooking, most air-fryer foods run about 5 to 25 minutes at 350 to 400 degrees F. Use an instant-read thermometer for meats, poultry, and leftovers. Do not rely on browning alone. Overcrowding can reduce cooking performance and make food safety less reliable because hot air cannot reach every surface evenly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Features Worth Paying For Under $40

At this price, skip gimmicks and buy the basics. Presets are nice, but they are less important than basket shape, cleanup, controls, and safety.

Prioritize these features:

  • Capacity that matches your actual portions, not wishful thinking.
  • Temperature range up to about 400 degrees F.
  • Automatic shutoff or timer shutoff.
  • Removable basket and crisper tray.
  • Documented wattage and dimensions.
  • Recognized safety listing or certification.
  • Clear warranty and return policy.
  • Replacement basket or tray availability if possible.

Be careful with vague material claims. Terms like ceramic, PFAS-free, glass, or non-toxic can be useful only when the manufacturer clearly states what the food-contact surfaces are, how to clean them, and whether replacement parts are available. Do not use metal utensils on coated baskets. Once a nonstick surface is deeply scratched or flaking, replace the basket or retire the appliance.

Operating Cost: Cheap to Run, But Not Free

Air fryers are generally inexpensive to operate because cook times are short. A 1,200-watt air fryer running for 20 minutes uses about 0.4 kilowatt-hours. At a rough U.S. residential electricity rate of $0.17 per kilowatt-hour, that is about $0.07 per cook cycle. A 1,500-watt unit running for 25 minutes uses about 0.625 kilowatt-hours, or about $0.11 at the same rate.

Your local utility rate may be higher or lower, but the pattern holds: the energy cost per use is small. The hidden costs are usually accessories and kitchen limitations. Silicone liners, parchment sheets, replacement trays, a heat-resistant counter mat, and an instant-read thermometer can add $10 to $40. If an older kitchen repeatedly trips breakers or lacks safe receptacles, the real cost may be electrical work, not the appliance.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

Buying and using an air fryer is usually a DIY decision. Measuring the counter, reading the manual, checking the recall database, and choosing a safe location are all homeowner tasks. You can also handle basic setup: wash removable parts, run the first cycle as directed, and test with a small batch of food.

  • SHAKE NOTIFICATIONS: Get automatic alerts halfway through cooking to shake the air fryer basket, guaranteeing evenly crisped French fries without having to set an extra timer.

Hire a licensed electrician if the outlet is loose, cracked, warm to the touch, discolored, or repeatedly trips the breaker. Also bring in a pro if you need a new receptacle location, additional kitchen circuits, GFCI/AFCI updates, or troubleshooting in an older kitchen. Electrical work in kitchens is not a place to improvise. Permits may be required for new circuits, panel work, and certain receptacle changes depending on local code and scope.

For remodels, plan around how people actually cook now. Countertop appliances have multiplied. A practical kitchen needs enough usable receptacles, durable work surfaces, task lighting, storage for small appliances, and ventilated appliance garage designs if those are included. We often recommend planning a specific landing zone for high-heat appliances instead of letting them migrate around the kitchen on stretched cords.

Our Buying Rules for Under-$40 Air Fryers

Use these rules and you will avoid most bad buys:

  • Buy from a known retailer when possible, especially Walmart, Target, Best Buy, or another seller with clear returns.
  • Favor a good 2-quart model over a questionable oversized unit.
  • Stretch to $40 to $60 if you cook for two or more people often.
  • Confirm wattage before plugging it into a crowded circuit.
  • Measure for at least 5 inches of rear clearance and open ventilation.
  • Check CPSC recalls by exact model number.
  • Avoid used units with missing labels, damaged cords, scratched baskets, or no model number.
  • Do not use extension cords, power strips, or enclosed cabinets while cooking.

The best air fryer under $40 is not the one with the biggest advertised basket or the longest preset list. It is the one that fits your counter, fits your circuit, cleans easily, has a real safety listing, and cooks the amount of food you actually make. For one person, a $35 compact model can be a smart kitchen upgrade. For two people or frequent use, the better value may be a sale-priced 4- to 6-quart unit just above the headline budget.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best air fryer under $40 in 2026?

The best choice is usually a 2-quart basket air fryer from a known retailer with a clear return policy, documented wattage, removable basket, automatic shutoff, and recognized safety certification. Sale-priced 4-quart models under $40 can be better if the brand and recall history check out.

Can you get a good 4-quart air fryer for under $40?

Yes, but usually only during promotions. A 4-quart unit under $40 can be a strong value for one to two people, but check the model number, warranty, safety listing, and return policy before buying.

Is a 2-quart air fryer big enough for two people?

A 2-quart air fryer can work for snacks or small sides for two people, but it is cramped for full meals. Air fryers cook best in a single layer, so couples who cook often are usually better served by a 4- to 6-quart model.

How much clearance does an air fryer need?

Use the manufacturer’s manual first, but a practical minimum is at least 5 inches behind the unit with open side and top ventilation. Do not run an air fryer inside a closed appliance garage or tight under-cabinet space.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do air fryers need a dedicated circuit?

Most countertop air fryers do not require a dedicated circuit by themselves, but they draw meaningful power. A 1,500-watt air fryer uses about 12.5 amps on a 120-volt circuit, which can overload a 15-amp circuit if other appliances are running.

What should I check before buying a used or clearance air fryer?

Check the exact model number against CPSC recalls, inspect the cord and plug, look for damaged plastic or scratched nonstick coating, confirm all trays are included, and avoid units with missing labels or unknown seller history.
