If you want to wash comforters at home without dragging them to a laundromat, the short answer is this: buy a high-efficiency washer with no center agitator, at least 4.5 cubic feet of capacity for most king comforters, and preferably 4.8 to 5.5 cubic feet if your bedding is lofty, oversized, or washed with sheets. A front-load washer is usually the best efficiency choice. A large impeller top-loader is often the easier loading choice.
On our remodeling and laundry-room jobs, the appliance itself is only half the decision. The other half is whether the room, floor, drain, valves, outlet, and dryer can support the machine you want. A 5.0 cubic foot washer may clean a king comforter, but if the dryer is undersized or the upstairs floor vibrates, the upgrade can become frustrating fast.
This guide focuses on what actually matters for homeowners: washer capacity, machine type, bedding fit, installation costs, utility checks, and when a comforter-friendly washer should trigger a laundry-room upgrade instead of a simple appliance swap.
Best Washer Size for Comforters
Washer capacity is measured in cubic feet. For comforters, capacity matters because bulky bedding needs room to roll, lift, collapse, rinse, and spin. If the comforter is packed tight, detergent and water cannot move through it evenly, and the washer may go out of balance during the spin cycle.

Use this as a practical sizing guide:
| Comforter size | Minimum washer capacity | Better target capacity | Best washer style |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin or full comforter | 3.5 cu. ft. | 4.0 to 4.5 cu. ft. | Front-load or impeller top-load |
| Queen comforter | 3.5 to 4.2 cu. ft. if it fits loosely | 4.5 to 5.0 cu. ft. | Front-load HE washer |
| King comforter | 4.5 cu. ft. | 5.0 to 5.5 cu. ft. | Large front-load or impeller top-load |
| King comforter plus sheets | 5.2 cu. ft. | 5.5 cu. ft. or larger | Extra-large HE washer |
| Oversized, down, or extra-lofty comforter | Depends on label and loft | Commercial washer if compressed | Commercial front-load when needed |
The best field test is simple: the comforter should sit below the door or lid line with room to move. If you have to push it down hard with both hands to close the door or lid, the washer is too small for that item. If the comforter fills more than about three-quarters of the drum, cannot tumble loosely, or presses against the glass, use a laundromat commercial washer instead of forcing the load.
Also read the care label. Some down, wool, weighted, or oversized bedding specifically calls for a commercial-size machine. That label matters more than the advertised washer capacity.
Front-Load vs Top-Load for Bulky Bedding
The two best washer types for comforters are front-load high-efficiency washers and top-load impeller washers. Both avoid the old center agitator, which can twist, bunch, abrade, or unevenly clean a large comforter.
Front-load washers
Front-loaders are usually the most efficient comforter washers. They tumble bedding through a shallow pool of water instead of filling the whole tub. Certified efficient models can use much less water and energy than standard machines, and full-size ENERGY STAR washers use about 14 gallons per load compared with about 20 gallons for a standard washer. Certified front-loaders can use about 50 percent less energy and water than top-load agitator machines.
For comforters, the front-load advantage is controlled tumbling. A king comforter can roll more naturally in a horizontal drum than it can around a post-style agitator. Look for 4.8 to 5.5 cubic feet, a bulky or bedding cycle, high spin speed, and strong vibration control.
The maintenance tradeoff is real. Front-loaders need the door gasket wiped clean, the detergent drawer kept dry, and the door left ajar between loads so the washer can air out. If the laundry room is tight and the door cannot stay open, plan for that before buying.
Top-load impeller washers
A top-load impeller washer uses a low-profile plate at the bottom of the tub instead of a tall center agitator. These machines often have large openings and deep tubs, which makes them easier for many homeowners to load. If bending into a front-loader is uncomfortable, or if you do not want to buy pedestals, a 5.0 to 5.5 cubic foot impeller top-loader is a strong option.
The tradeoff is that very deep tubs can be hard to unload for shorter users, especially when wet bedding sticks to the bottom. Some large top-loaders also use more water than comparable front-loaders, although they are still far better for comforters than traditional agitator machines.
What Features Actually Matter
Appliance spec sheets are crowded with smart features, specialty cycles, and brand-specific names. For comforters, we look for a narrower set of features.
Capacity between 4.8 and 5.5 cubic feet
A 4.5 cubic foot washer is the common minimum for many king comforters. For a homeowner buying specifically to wash bedding, we prefer 4.8 to 5.5 cubic feet. That range gives most households enough drum volume without jumping into oversized specialty machines that may not fit a closet or second-floor laundry room.
No center agitator
For oversized bedding, skip traditional agitator washers. The center post reduces usable tub space and can cause a large comforter to wrap around the mechanism. That creates poor cleaning, uneven rinsing, and hard spin-cycle vibration.

Bulky or bedding cycle
A proper bulky cycle uses different fill, soak, tumble, and spin behavior than a normal cycle. It helps wet the comforter more evenly and reduces the chance of one heavy corner throwing the drum out of balance.
High spin speed
Comforters hold water. A strong final spin removes more moisture before drying, which saves time and reduces the chance of damp spots inside down or fiberfill. That said, delicate down bedding may still need a gentler cycle and extra drying care.
Vibration control
Vibration control matters most in upstairs laundry rooms, closets near bedrooms, and homes with wood-framed floors. A large washer spinning a wet king comforter creates real force. We pay more attention to leveling feet, floor stiffness, anti-vibration design, and drain-pan planning than to Wi-Fi controls.
Best Washing Machine Categories for Comforters
Rather than claiming one universal winner, it is more useful to match the washer type to the homeowner and the room. These are the categories we would consider first in 2026.
Best overall: large front-load washer, 5.0 cubic feet
A 5.0 cubic foot front-load washer is the best all-around choice for most comforter-focused buyers. It offers enough room for king bedding, efficient water use, good spin extraction, and strong cleaning performance when loaded correctly.

As a 2026 price signal, a 5.0 cubic foot LG front-load washer has been listed around $1,299 to $1,349 on sale.
This category is best for homeowners who wash bedding often, want lower water use, and have enough space for the door swing and gasket maintenance.
Best ergonomic pick: 5.5 cubic foot impeller top-loader
A 5.5 cubic foot impeller top-loader is a practical choice when the homeowner wants a large opening, easier loading from above, and no front door clearance issue. Large LG and Samsung impeller top-loaders are common examples in this category. Some 5.5 cubic foot top-load models have been listed around $949 to $1,149 on sale, and a Samsung 5.5 cubic foot washer with matching dryer set has been listed around $1,998 regular price for two appliances.
This category is best for laundry rooms where a front-load door would block a walkway, or for homeowners who dislike bending. Before buying, stand in front of the display model and reach into the bottom of the tub. If you cannot comfortably grab a wet towel from the bottom, the machine may be too deep for daily use.

Best value: 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot front-load washer
For many households, the value range is a 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot front-loader from a major brand. Budget models suitable for some queen bedding start around $450 to $700, but the comforter-friendly range usually begins closer to $750. We would rather see a homeowner buy a simpler 4.8 cubic foot washer with good vibration control than a flashy smaller unit with features they will never use.
Best durability-first choice: commercial-style or heavy-duty washer
Some homeowners prioritize long service life and simple controls over maximum capacity. Heavy-duty and commercial-style washers can be a good fit, but check the actual drum size carefully. Some durable machines have smaller capacities that are excellent for towels and work clothes but not ideal for king comforters. Durability does not help if the bedding has to be crammed.

Laundry Room Readiness Checklist
Before buying a 5.0 cubic foot washer, check the room like a contractor. Most appliance problems we see are not because the machine is bad. They happen because the laundry space was never prepared for a heavier, faster-spinning, larger appliance.
Measure the delivery path
Measure the appliance, then measure the path. Check the front door, hallway turns, stair width, laundry-room door, closet opening, and appliance alcove. Many large washers are roughly 27 inches wide, 30 to 34 inches deep, and 39 inches tall, but depth with hoses and door clearance can be the problem. Leave several inches behind the washer for supply hoses, drain hose radius, and vibration clearance.
Recommended Free Tools
Check floor level and stiffness
A washer must sit level, with all feet firmly contacting the floor. On wood-framed floors, especially upstairs, bounce and deflection can make a good washer behave badly. If the room shakes during spin, the fix may be leveling, anti-vibration pads, floor repair, or framing reinforcement. We also prefer drain pans or automatic leak shutoffs in upstairs laundry rooms.
Inspect water valves and hoses
Old washer valves often look fine until you try to close them. Replace corroded valves, stiff rubber hoses, or hoses with bulging, cracking, or rusted fittings. Stainless braided washer hoses usually cost about $20 to $50. Inspect hoses annually and plan replacement about every 5 years, sooner if you see wear.
Confirm drain and standpipe condition
A modern washer can discharge water quickly. The standpipe and trap need to handle the flow without backing up. If you see slow draining, gurgling, overflow staining, or a hose jammed too tightly into the pipe, have the drain checked before the new washer arrives.
Verify electrical protection
Laundry equipment has specific electrical requirements, and local code rules matter. Newer residential work commonly involves GFCI protection for laundry areas, and AFCI requirements may apply depending on the circuit and adopted code. A washer should be on a properly grounded circuit, and the dryer may need a separate 240-volt circuit or gas connection. Do not use an extension cord for a washer.

Drying matters as much as washing. A washer that can clean a king comforter may leave it too wet for a small dryer. For king bedding, look for a dryer around 7.0 to 7.8 cubic feet. Use low heat, dryer balls, and midpoint repositioning so the fill dries evenly. Down comforters may need extra time and patience; trapped moisture can cause odor and clumping.
2026 Cost Guide: Washer, Installation, and Upgrades
For a simple appliance swap with existing hookups, the cost can be straightforward. For a laundry-room relocation, upstairs installation, or closet retrofit, the surrounding work can cost as much as the appliance.
| Item | Typical 2026 cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Budget washer for some queen bedding | $450 to $700 | Check capacity carefully; many are too small for king comforters |
| Comforter-friendly HE washer | $750 to $1,500 | Common range for 4.5 to 5.5 cu. ft. machines |
| Premium large washer | $1,300 to $2,400+ | Smart features, steam, all-in-one, or premium front-load models |
| Washer/dryer set | $1,000 to $2,300+ | Large-capacity premium pairs can exceed this |
| Basic installation labor | $100 to $300 per set | When water, drain, electric, and venting already exist |
| Straight washer replacement | $100 to $200 | Typical for a simple swap with working hookups |
| New hookups or relocation | $650 to $2,000 | Depends on distance to drain, water, vent, gas, and panel |
| Permits | $50 to $500 | Varies by local scope and inspection rules |
| New outlet | $100 to $450 | Depends on circuit access and code requirements |
| Dryer vent installation | $140 to $600 | Longer or more complex runs cost more |
| Leak sensor or automatic shutoff | $30 to $250+ | Strongly recommended for upstairs laundry rooms |
| Pedestal | $200 to $350 each | Improves front-load ergonomics but adds height |
The biggest cost drivers are existing versus new hookups, first-floor versus upstairs location, distance to the drain and electrical panel, gas versus electric dryer needs, wall and floor repair, local labor rates, haul-away fees, and whether the floor needs vibration mitigation.

A capable homeowner can handle a basic washer replacement if the shutoff valves work, the floor is level, the drain is clear, the outlet is correct, and the delivery crew places the appliance safely. The DIY portion should be limited to connecting new hoses, inserting the drain hose correctly, leveling the machine, running a test cycle, and checking for leaks.

For second-floor laundry rooms, we recommend a more cautious standard: accessible shutoff valves, a drain pan where practical, leak detection, solid flooring, careful leveling, and enough clearance to service the machine without tearing apart trim or doors. Water damage from a failed hose upstairs can cost far more than the appliance.
How to Wash a Comforter Without Ruining It
Start with the care label. If the label says dry clean only or commercial washer only, follow it. If home washing is allowed, shake the comforter out, check seams for tears, pretreat stains lightly, and load it loosely by itself unless the machine is clearly large enough for sheets too.
Use a mild detergent and do not overpour. Too much detergent is difficult to rinse out of thick bedding and can leave residue. Choose the bulky, bedding, or delicate cycle based on the fabric and fill. For down or very thick comforters, use an extra rinse. The goal is a clean rinse and controlled spin, not the most aggressive wash available.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Dry on low heat. Pull the comforter out partway through drying, shake it, rotate it, and return it to the dryer with dryer balls or clean tennis balls if the label allows. Large comforters often need multiple low-heat cycles. Do not store the bedding until the center and corners are completely dry. Heat damage and trapped moisture are bigger risks than the wash cycle itself.
Our Bottom-Line Recommendation
For most US homeowners buying a washer specifically for comforters, the best choice is a 4.8 to 5.5 cubic foot high-efficiency machine with no center agitator, a bulky or bedding cycle, strong spin performance, and good vibration control. Choose a front-loader if efficiency and cleaning are the priority. Choose a large impeller top-loader if loading comfort and a wide opening matter more.
Before you order, measure the room and delivery path, verify the floor, inspect valves and hoses, confirm the drain and electrical setup, and make sure the dryer is large enough. A good comforter washer should make bedding easier, not expose weak plumbing, a shaky floor, or a dryer that cannot finish the job.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size washing machine do I need for a king-size comforter?
Use at least a 4.5 cubic foot washer for most king comforters. A 5.0 to 5.5 cubic foot washer is better for lofty, oversized, or frequently washed bedding. If the comforter has to be compressed to close the door or lid, use a commercial washer.
Is a front-load or top-load washer better for comforters?
A front-load HE washer is usually better for efficiency, tumbling action, and water use. A large impeller top-loader is better for homeowners who want easier loading from above or dislike bending. Avoid traditional center agitator washers for oversized comforters.
Can I wash a queen comforter in a 3.5 cubic foot washer?
Sometimes, if the comforter is not too lofty and fits loosely. For more reliable results, a 4.5 cubic foot washer gives a queen comforter more room to move, rinse, and spin without bunching.
Do I need a larger dryer if I buy a large washer?
Usually, yes. A washer that handles a king comforter should be paired with a dryer around 7.0 to 7.8 cubic feet. An undersized dryer can leave damp spots, especially inside down or thick fiberfill bedding.
How much does it cost to install a washer with existing hookups?
Basic washer or washer-dryer installation with existing hookups commonly runs about $100 to $300 for labor. A straightforward washer replacement may be closer to $100 to $200. Costs rise when plumbing, electrical, venting, or floor work is needed.
When should I use a laundromat instead of washing a comforter at home?
Use a laundromat commercial washer if the care label requires it, the comforter fills more than about three-quarters of the drum, presses against the door or lid, or cannot tumble loosely. Forcing the load can damage the bedding and strain the washer.
