For most LG washing machines, the best detergent is a liquid HE detergent with strong stain enzymes, used in a smaller dose than many homeowners expect. LG washers are efficient, but they are not forgiving of soap overload. A front-load or HE top-load washer uses less water than an old agitator washer, so excess suds do not rinse out easily. The right detergent protects your clothes, your machine, and the flooring and framing around the laundry area.
Best Detergent Choice for Most LG Washers
The safest all-around choice for an LG front-load or HE top-load washer is a liquid HE detergent. It dissolves well in cold water, works on body oils and everyday stains, flows correctly through the dispenser, and is easy to measure for small, medium, and large loads.

For a normal 8- to 12-pound mixed load, many households should start below the bottle’s maximum line. If clothes feel slick, towels feel stiff, the washer smells musty, or the door glass has film after a cycle, reduce the dose before blaming the machine.

If your washer has ezDispense, use liquid HE detergent unless the owner’s manual for your model says otherwise. ezDispense models automatically dose based on load size or weight, and many allow manual dose-level adjustment. If loads come out too soapy, towels lose softness, or odor returns quickly after cleaning the washer, the auto-dose setting may be too high for your detergent concentration or water conditions.
Liquid, Powder, or Pods in an LG Washer?
Liquid HE Detergent
Liquid HE detergent is the best default for LG washers. It dissolves quickly, performs well in cold water, works in standard dispenser drawers, and is compatible with many auto-dosing systems. It is also easier to use less. That sounds minor, but accurate dosing is one of the biggest differences between a clean LG washer and a smelly one.
Choose liquid for everyday clothes, sheets, towels, activewear, kids’ laundry, pet bedding, and most cold-water cycles. If you wash in cold water to save energy, liquid is usually the more dependable choice.
Powder HE Detergent
Powder HE detergent can be a good secondary option, especially for muddy pants, clay soil, and warm-water workwear loads. On construction sites, we see the same pattern with mud rooms and laundry areas: soil and grit behave differently from body oil and food stains. Powder can help with mineral-based dirt, but it needs enough water temperature and cycle time to dissolve fully.

Laundry Pods
Pods are convenient, but they are not the most flexible choice for LG washers. One pod may be too much detergent for a small load and not enough for a very large, heavily soiled load. Pods also need to go directly into the drum before clothes, not into a liquid detergent dispenser.
If you use pods, use HE-compatible pods and follow the package directions. For small loads, delicates, quick cycles, or ezDispense models, liquid detergent gives you better control.

How Much Detergent to Use in an LG Washing Machine
Use less than you think, then increase only when the laundry proves it needs more. That is the practical rule.

For a lightly soiled small load, start with the lowest marked dose or less if your detergent is concentrated. For a normal mixed load, use the standard HE dose on the bottle, not the deep-fill or heavily soiled line. For a large load of towels, bedding, sports clothes, or workwear, increase modestly. For hard water, you may need a slightly higher dose or a water-treatment strategy.
LG front-load dispensers typically separate the main wash detergent, pre-wash detergent, bleach, and fabric softener compartments. If you select pre-wash, LG guidance is to use about half as much detergent in the pre-wash compartment as you use for the main wash. Do not fill every compartment just because it is there.
Watch the washer during the rinse. A thin layer of suds at the glass is not always a problem, but heavy foam late in the cycle means overdosing. Clothes that feel slippery, towels that dry stiff, or a washer that smells clean for two days and then turns musty again are also signs of too much detergent.
Water Hardness Changes the Answer
Water hardness is one of the most overlooked details in laundry rooms. Soft water needs less detergent because soap works more easily and rinses more completely. Hard water can leave minerals behind, dull fabrics, and make detergent less effective.

If you are on a well, use a test strip or have the water checked. As a working guide, under 3.5 grains per gallon is soft, 3.5 to 7 is moderate, 7 to 10.5 is hard, and over 10.5 is very hard.
In soft water, reduce detergent and avoid fabric softener buildup. In hard water, use a quality HE detergent and consider a water softener or laundry booster that is compatible with your washer and plumbing. If the laundry room also has scale on valves, white crust at hose connections, or mineral marks at the standpipe, the washer is not the only system dealing with hard water.
Detergent and Washer Odor: What Actually Causes the Smell
Most LG front-load odor complaints come from moisture plus residue. Detergent, softener, body soil, lint, and hard-water minerals collect in areas that stay damp: the gasket, dispenser drawer, drain pump filter area, and outer tub. Overdosing speeds that up.
Run LG’s Tub Clean cycle about monthly in busy households, rentals, pet homes, or homes that use many cold-water cycles. Use a washer cleaner tablet when appropriate. Do not try to cover washer odor with more fragrance. Scented detergent can make a washer smell pleasant while residue continues building. Clean the machine, reduce the dose, and improve drying.
Best Detergent for Workwear, Grease, and Construction-Site Soil
As a construction company, we care about this because work clothes bring real soil into a laundry room: clay, drywall dust, sawdust, concrete dust, adhesives, oil, sunscreen, sweat, and metal filings. Detergent alone does not solve all of that.
For greasy or oily workwear, use a liquid HE detergent with enzymes and pretreat the stain. Give the pretreatment 5 to 10 minutes before washing. For clay-heavy pants or muddy kids’ clothes, shake or brush off dry soil outside first. Sending grit straight into a washer is hard on the pump, filter, and drain line.
Use warm water when the fabric allows it. Cold water saves energy and is fine for many loads, but oily residue and heavy soil often need more help. Do not overload the drum. Clothes need room to lift, drop, and rinse. A front-loader packed tight to the glass will not clean well no matter how good the detergent is.
For concrete dust or construction debris, avoid washing heavily contaminated clothes with towels or bedding. Dust can transfer, clog lint paths, and leave a film. If clothes are covered in solvent, fuel, or flammable residue, follow the product safety instructions and do not put them in a dryer until they are fully safe to dry.
Eco, Sensitive Skin, and Septic-Conscious Choices
If you want a safer-ingredient detergent, look for the EPA Safer Choice label. The program is designed to help consumers identify products that perform and use ingredients safer for people and the environment. That is a more credible screen than vague green marketing on the front of a bottle.
For sensitive skin, choose a fragrance-free, dye-free HE liquid detergent and skip fabric softener. Run an extra rinse if needed. The issue is not always the detergent brand; it can be too much detergent left in fabric. Reducing the dose often helps before switching products.
For septic-conscious homes, use HE detergent correctly and avoid overuse. Excess detergent, softener, and antibacterial additives are not helpful for a septic system. The washer also needs a proper discharge route and a drain system that can handle modern flow rates.

A modern laundry area should have accessible hot and cold shutoff valves, quality braided stainless washer hoses, a drain standpipe that matches local plumbing requirements, and a dedicated laundry receptacle with required GFCI protection. Current electrical codes commonly require GFCI protection for laundry-area receptacles, and many laundry circuits are 20-amp circuits. Local code and the adopted code year control the final requirement.
We also like durable, water-resistant flooring under and around the washer. Luxury vinyl plank, tile, or properly detailed sheet flooring performs better than carpet or unprotected wood. In upper-floor laundry rooms, a washer pan and leak detector are cheap insurance. The pan has to drain somewhere useful or be paired with an alarm; a pan with no drain and no sensor only buys a small amount of time.
Leave room behind the washer for hoses and airflow. A crushed drain hose or kinked supply hose can create performance problems that look like washer failure. Keep shutoffs reachable without moving a stacked washer and dryer. In a real leak, the valve you cannot reach is almost the same as no valve.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro
DIY Is Reasonable When

It is also reasonable to replace standard washer hoses yourself if the shutoffs work, the connections are accessible, and you can check for leaks after installation. Use quality braided stainless hoses, avoid cross-threading, and recheck the connections after the first full cycle.
Hire a Pro When
Bring in a qualified plumber, electrician, appliance technician, or contractor when you see recurring leaks, slow drainage, standpipe overflow, tripped breakers, warm receptacles, damaged flooring, moldy baseboards, or valves that will not shut off. Hire a pro if the washer is being relocated, stacked in a tight closet, installed upstairs, or tied into older plumbing.
Electrical and plumbing changes may require permits. Laundry receptacles, GFCI protection, drain sizing, venting, trap arrangement, and standpipe height are code-controlled details. Local code always wins, and older homes often need corrections before a new washer performs reliably.

If a detergent change does not fix odor or poor rinsing after two or three proper cleaning cycles, the issue may be mechanical or installation-related. A clogged pump filter, restricted drain hose, failing valve, or poor venting can all imitate detergent trouble.
