Spring caterpillar nests are usually manageable if you identify them early and avoid overreacting. The short answer: inspect trees at bud break and early leaf-out, confirm what type of caterpillar or web you are dealing with, remove small reachable tents by hand or with light pruning, and call a professional when nests are high, numerous, near power lines, or possibly browntail moth.
On our job sites, we treat this like any other exterior property issue: identify the risk first, choose the least destructive method that works, and do not turn a small tree-care problem into a ladder accident, bark burn, pollinator kill, or utility-line hazard. Most healthy deciduous trees can recover from light to moderate spring feeding. The goal is not panic removal. The goal is targeted control before caterpillars strip high-value trees, fruit trees, young ornamentals, or trees already stressed by drought, construction, compaction, or disease.
The biggest mistake homeowners make is calling every webbed branch a caterpillar nest. Eastern tent caterpillars, forest tent caterpillars, fall webworms, spongy moths, and browntail moths behave differently. Timing, location, host tree, health risk, and treatment choice all change depending on the species.
Start With Identification Before You Touch the Nest
Before pruning, spraying, or scraping, take 3 clear photos: one close-up of the web or egg mass, one of the affected branch, and one of the whole tree. Those photos help a pest-control company, arborist, or local extension office confirm timing and species. A 2-minute photo check can prevent the wrong treatment.

Use this field checklist first:
- Season: early spring, late spring, summer, fall, or winter.
- Location on tree: branch crotch, branch tip, trunk, underside of limb, or outdoor object.
- Host plant: cherry, apple, crabapple, oak, birch, aspen, willow, ornamental fruit tree, or mixed hardwoods.
- Web position: tight tent in a branch fork, loose web at branch ends, small winter web, or no true web at all.
- Visible larvae: active caterpillars inside silk, feeding on leaves, moving in groups, or wandering on siding/patios.
- Regional risk: spongy moth quarantine areas and browntail moth areas in parts of the Northeast need special handling.
For eastern tent caterpillars, a practical cue is forsythia bloom and early bud break. Maryland Extension notes hatch can line up around forsythia bloom and about 86 growing degree days. That is more useful than circling one calendar date, because spring arrives differently in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, and Maine.
Common Caterpillar Nests and Look-Alikes
Here is the quick comparison we use when walking a property in spring. The treatment changes depending on what you find.
| Problem | What It Looks Like | Usual Timing | Common Hosts | Best First Response |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eastern tent caterpillar | Silk tent in a branch fork or crotch | Early spring through late spring | Cherry, crabapple, apple, other Prunus and Malus trees | Remove reachable tents when larvae are inside; scrape winter egg masses |
| Forest tent caterpillar | Groups of caterpillars, but no true tent | Spring | Aspen, oak, birch, maple, fruit trees | Monitor tree health; targeted treatment only if feeding is heavy |
| Fall webworm | Loose webbing near branch ends | Late summer into fall | Many deciduous trees | Usually tolerate; prune small reachable webs if needed |
| Spongy moth | Buff-colored egg masses on bark, outdoor furniture, vehicles, trailers, firewood, and equipment | Egg masses visible fall through spring; larvae feed in spring | Oaks and many hardwoods | Follow local quarantine rules; remove egg masses before hatch |
| Browntail moth | Small winter webs at branch tips, often in oak, apple, crabapple, and other hardwoods | Winter webs visible fall through early spring; caterpillars active in spring | Common in Maine and nearby areas | Use PPE and consider professional removal due to rash and breathing risk |
Eastern Tent Caterpillars
Eastern tent caterpillars are the classic spring “nest in a tree.” They hatch early and build a silk tent in the fork of branches, often on cherry, crabapple, apple, and related ornamental or fruit trees. The tent works like a shelter. Caterpillars leave to feed and return when conditions are cool, wet, or dark.
That habit gives you the best removal window: early morning, evening, cool cloudy days, or rainy days. If you remove the tent at noon on a warm day, many caterpillars may already be out feeding.
Forest Tent Caterpillars
Forest tent caterpillars are badly named because they do not make a true tent. They may gather in groups on trunks or branches and can defoliate trees during outbreak years, but you will not usually see the same branch-crotch silk tent. If you see group feeding but no tent, do not assume cutting out a web will solve it.
Fall Webworms
Fall webworms usually show up later in the season and make webs around foliage near branch tips. They can look dramatic, but they often cause limited long-term harm because much of the tree’s growing season is already finished. If you see webbing in August or September at the ends of branches, it is probably not the same spring tent caterpillar problem.
Spongy Moth
Spongy moth is a serious defoliator in many U.S. regions. The spring concern is not a silk tent. It is egg masses and young larvae. Egg masses can be found on trees, outdoor furniture, campers, trailers, firewood, grills, and other items stored outside. USDA rules require inspection and removal of spongy moth life stages from outdoor household items before moving from a quarantine area to a non-quarantine area.
Browntail Moth
Browntail moth is a special safety case, especially in Maine and nearby areas. The issue is not just tree damage. Caterpillar hairs can cause skin rash and respiratory irritation, and those hairs can remain toxic in the environment for up to 3 years. If you suspect browntail moth, do not dry rake, leaf-blow, mow through debris, or handle nests casually. Wear proper protection or hire a qualified professional.

When to Remove Caterpillar Nests and When to Leave Them Alone
You do not need to remove every caterpillar nest. A mature, healthy shade tree can usually refoliate after light to moderate spring defoliation. Birds, predators, parasitoids, and weather also reduce caterpillar numbers naturally.
Removal makes more sense when the tree is young, newly planted, drought-stressed, recently damaged, already diseased, or valuable enough that defoliation matters. That includes fruit trees, specimen ornamentals, small crabapples near entries, and trees that screen patios, driveways, or front elevations.
Use this decision path:
- Leave it alone: one or two small nests on a healthy mature tree, no safety risk, no fruit crop concern, no browntail or spongy moth issue.
- DIY removal: reachable tent below shoulder height, small branch involved, stable footing, no utility lines, no allergy or respiratory concern.
- Professional help: nests above shoulder height, multiple trees, heavy defoliation, uncertain species, proximity to wires, branch removal requiring a ladder, or suspected browntail moth.
On construction and renovation properties, we are also watching for tree stress from grade changes, trenching, compacted soil, stored materials, and equipment traffic. A tree already dealing with root disturbance has less margin for heavy defoliation. That is when early, targeted action is worth it.
Safest DIY Removal Methods for Reachable Nests
For a small, reachable eastern tent caterpillar nest, mechanical removal is usually the cleanest first move. You need gloves, eye protection, a bucket, water, dish soap, and hand pruners. Many homeowners can handle this for $0 to $75 if they already own basic yard tools. If you need a bypass lopper or pole pruner for branches reachable from the ground, budget roughly $30 to $150.
Method 1: Hand Remove the Tent
Work early in the morning, in the evening, on a cool day, or during wet weather when larvae are more likely to be inside. Put on gloves and eye protection. Pull or scrape the silk mass from the branch and drop it into a bucket of soapy water. Let it sit long enough to drown the caterpillars, then bag the material for disposal.
Do not shake the nest over garden beds, patios, or mulch and assume the problem is solved. Caterpillars can crawl back up the tree or move to nearby plants.
Method 2: Tear Open the Tent
If the tent is reachable but wrapped around a branch you do not want to cut, tear it open with a gloved hand or a long tool from the ground. This exposes caterpillars to birds, weather, and predators. It is less complete than removal, but it avoids unnecessary pruning.
Method 3: Prune Only Small Infested Twigs
If the tent is on a small branch or twig, prune the branch back to a proper lateral branch or branch collar. Use sharp bypass pruners or loppers. Avoid leaving a stub several inches long, and do not cut flush into the trunk or main limb. For a small ornamental, one clean pruning cut is better than ripping bark while trying to pull webbing loose.

Keep pruning conservative. Do not remove large structural limbs just to eliminate caterpillars unless the limb is already dead, damaged, or interfering with the house.
Method 4: Scrape Egg Masses in Winter
Winter and very early spring are good times to remove egg masses before hatch. Eastern tent caterpillar egg masses can be scraped from small branches. Spongy moth egg masses should be removed carefully and disposed of according to local guidance, especially if outdoor items are being moved out of a quarantine area.

What Not to Do
Do not burn caterpillar tents out of trees. Open flame can damage bark and cambium, ignite dry material, scar the tree, and create a liability problem. It is a bad trade for a pest that can usually be handled with gloves, water, pruning, or targeted treatment.
Do not spray broad-spectrum insecticide as the first response. It can kill pollinators, predators, parasitoids, and non-target caterpillars while doing little to caterpillars protected inside silk. It is also often too late once caterpillars are large and wandering.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDo not climb a ladder with cutting tools to reach a nest. Above shoulder height, the risk changes. A small branch can move unexpectedly, a pole tool can pull you off balance, and overhead utilities can turn a yard job into an emergency. OSHA ladder guidance for work settings is built around the same principle we follow in the field: stable footing, proper ladder setup, and avoiding awkward reaches matter more than saving a service call.
Do not dry mow, rake, or leaf-blow around suspected browntail moth debris. The hairs can become airborne and cause skin or respiratory symptoms. Wet methods, PPE, and professional handling are safer.
Are Bt and spinosad Worth Using?
Biological products can be useful, but timing and coverage matter. Bt kurstaki and spinosad are commonly used for young feeding caterpillars. A homeowner product may cost about $15 to $40, plus $15 to $60 for a pump sprayer if you do not already own one. Larger trees cost more to treat because fresh foliage coverage is what matters.
Bt must be eaten by the caterpillar. Spraying the silk nest itself is not the target. The product needs to be applied to leaves that young larvae are actively feeding on, following the label. Older caterpillars are harder to control and closer to pupation, so late treatment is often poor value.

That does not mean never use it. It means do not blanket-spray the yard. Keep treatment targeted to the affected plant, avoid spraying open flowers, watch wind drift, and follow all label directions.
For fruit trees or high-value ornamentals, inspect weekly during early spring. The best window is while larvae are small, before defoliation is obvious from the street.
When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
The dividing line is not whether you are handy. It is height, species risk, utility clearance, tree value, and whether the work requires equipment you cannot use safely from the ground.

| Situation | Best Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One reachable tent in a small crabapple | DIY | Low cost, low height, simple hand removal |
| Several nests in a young fruit tree | DIY or pest-control visit | Early action can protect the crop and reduce defoliation |
| Nests above shoulder height | Hire a pro | Cutting and reaching overhead increases injury risk |
| Branches near service lines or utility wires | Call utility or qualified tree contractor | Electrical clearance is not homeowner work |
| Suspected browntail moth | Hire a qualified pro | Hairs can cause rash and breathing irritation |
| Commercial or multifamily property | Licensed contractor | Liability, tenant exposure, pesticide licensing, and documentation matter |
If the tree is protected by a local ordinance, part of an HOA landscape plan, on a commercial property, or close to a public sidewalk, check before cutting. Many towns regulate street trees and significant trees by trunk diameter. Even where no permit is needed for a small twig, larger pruning, removal, or work in a right-of-way can require approval.

What Professional Caterpillar Nest Removal Costs in 2026
Professional cost depends on whether you need pest control, arborist work, pruning access, or tree removal for a separate structural problem. Caterpillar nests alone rarely justify removing a tree.
| Service | Typical 2026 U.S. Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DIY inspection and hand removal | $0-$75 | Assumes gloves, bucket, soap, eye protection, and basic pruners |
| DIY pole pruner or lopper | $30-$150 | Only for branches reachable from the ground |
| DIY Bt or spinosad treatment | $15-$40 product; $15-$60 sprayer | Works best on young caterpillars with good leaf coverage |
| One-time pest-control visit | About $100-$600 | National references cluster in this range; common averages run about $171-$209 |
| Standard exterior pest service | $150-$500 typical | High-cost urban/coastal markets may run higher |
| Arborist consultation or tree-care project | Often $300-$1,800; national average around $800 | Climbing, bucket truck access, and multiple trees increase price |
| Tree trimming tied to access | About $200-$800 | Driven by height, branch size, disposal, and equipment |
| Tree removal, if tree is unsafe for other reasons | About $300-$1,500; many jobs around $385-$1,070 | Not normally needed for caterpillar nests alone |
The main cost drivers are tree height, nest height, number of affected trees, species involved, ladder or bucket-truck need, proximity to power lines or structures, disposal, local labor rates, pesticide licensing, repeat visits, and whether the work is scheduled or urgent.
For most homes, the practical cost decision is simple. If the nest can be reached safely from the ground, DIY removal is usually reasonable. If the work needs a ladder, a saw, a sprayer for a tall canopy, or utility clearance, the professional bill is buying risk control as much as pest control.
Cleanup After Removal
After removal, bag the webbing and caterpillars or drown them in soapy water before disposal. Wash gloves, tools, and exposed clothing. If caterpillars contacted siding, decks, railings, or outdoor furniture, rinse those surfaces with water.
In browntail moth areas, cleanup is more serious. Avoid dry sweeping, dry raking, leaf blowing, and mowing over contaminated debris. Wear gloves, long sleeves, eye protection, and respiratory protection appropriate for dusty outdoor work. Wet down debris before handling when local guidance recommends it.
Do not transport infested firewood, brush, outdoor furniture, trailers, or equipment without inspecting them, especially in spongy moth quarantine areas. Egg masses can ride on items that have nothing to do with trees.
How to Reduce Nest Problems Next Spring
The best prevention is routine inspection. Walk the property in late winter, again at bud break, again around forsythia bloom, and weekly through early leaf-out on fruit trees and high-value ornamentals. You are looking for egg masses, small tents, and early feeding while the job is still small.

Keep trees healthy so they can tolerate occasional feeding. Water young trees during dry spells, maintain 2 to 3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keep mulch off the trunk, avoid soil compaction, and do not park equipment or store materials under the canopy. Construction activity is hard on roots, and stressed trees are more vulnerable to secondary problems.
If a tree gets hit hard two years in a row, or if more than roughly 30 percent to 50 percent of the canopy is defoliated on a young or stressed tree, bring in an arborist. The caterpillars may be only one part of the tree’s condition.
Bottom Line
Spring caterpillar nests are usually a tree-care timing problem, not a crisis. Identify the species, act early, keep removal work at ground level, and avoid broad spraying or fire. For small eastern tent caterpillar nests, hand removal or limited pruning is often enough. For high nests, utility conflicts, large infestations, spongy moth movement rules, or browntail moth health risks, hire a qualified professional.
The right approach protects the tree, the pollinators, the people doing the work, and the property around it. That is the standard we use in the field, and it is the standard worth using in your yard.

Leave small nests alone if the tree is mature, healthy, and only lightly affected. Remove nests when the tree is young, stressed, valuable, fruit-bearing, or heavily defoliated. Birds and predators help, but early removal can protect vulnerable trees.
What is the safest way to remove a caterpillar nest from a tree?
For reachable nests, wear gloves and eye protection, remove the tent early morning or evening when caterpillars are inside, and drop it into soapy water. Prune only small infested twigs. Do not climb with cutting tools or work near utility lines.
Can I burn caterpillar webs out of a tree?
No. Burning webs can damage bark and cambium, ignite nearby materials, scar the tree, and create a safety or liability problem. Mechanical removal, limited pruning, or targeted professional treatment is safer.
Does Bt work on tent caterpillars?
Bt kurstaki can work on young feeding caterpillars, but it must be eaten on treated foliage. Spraying the silk tent itself is not effective. Use it selectively, follow the label, and avoid unnecessary treatment because Bt can affect non-target moth and butterfly larvae.
