The best dishwasher for apartment living is not always the highest-rated full-size machine. In a small kitchen, the right choice depends on four practical questions: Do you rent or own? Do you have 18 inches of cabinet width? Can you connect to a faucet, or do you need a permanent install? And how much noise can you tolerate in an open-plan space?
For most renters, the safest choices are a countertop tank dishwasher or an 18-inch portable roll-away model. For condo owners, ADUs, and small kitchen remodels, an 18-inch built-in dishwasher is usually the cleanest long-term solution if the plumbing, drain, cabinet opening, and GFCI-protected power are handled correctly. In 2026, expect mini countertop units to run about $250 to $350, larger countertop models about $300 to $420, 18-inch portable dishwashers about $570 to $950, and 18-inch built-ins about $399 to $1,449 before installation.
On our apartment and small-kitchen projects, we look less at marketing claims and more at fit, access, leak risk, sound level, and serviceability. A compact dishwasher that cannot accept your dinner plates, blocks the only prep counter, or needs a faucet adapter your sink will not accept is not a bargain. The best unit is the one that fits the apartment without creating a maintenance problem.
Best Apartment Dishwasher Choices by Situation
If you want the short answer, match the dishwasher type to your living situation first. Brand and cycle count come second.

| Apartment situation | Best dishwasher type | Typical capacity | 2026 price range | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Studio renter with limited counter space | Mini countertop tank model | About 2 place settings | $250-$350 | One person, light daily dish loads |
| Renter with standard faucet and more dishes | Larger countertop faucet-connect model | About 4-6 place settings | $300-$420 | One to two people, no cabinet work |
| Renter who wants real capacity | 18-inch portable roll-away dishwasher | About 8 place settings | $570-$950 | Two-person households, lease-permitting faucet hookup |
| Condo owner or small-kitchen remodel | 18-inch built-in dishwasher | About 8 place settings | $399-$1,449 before install | Permanent, cleaner-looking kitchen layouts |
| Accessible kitchen or low counter condition | ADA-height or compact drawer-style model | Varies by model | Often premium-priced | Accessibility-driven layouts and tight clearances |
For apartment use, a 45 to 47 dBA dishwasher is a strong target if the kitchen opens to the living room. A 50 to 52 dBA compact model is still acceptable for many apartments, especially at budget pricing. Once you get above roughly 55 dBA, the machine can feel intrusive in a studio or open-plan unit.

Countertop Dishwashers: Best for Renters and Studios
Countertop dishwashers are the least invasive option. They usually sit on the counter near the sink and either connect to the faucet or use a built-in water tank. The main advantage is obvious: no cabinet cutting, no hardwired electrical work, and usually no permanent plumbing connection.
Mini tank-style models are commonly sold in the $250 to $350 range and typically handle about 2 place settings. Larger countertop faucet-connect models often cost about $300 to $420 and may handle 4 to 6 place settings. That is enough for plates, glasses, flatware, and a few small prep items, but it is not enough for a full dinner cleanup with pots, pans, mixing bowls, and sheet pans.
When a Tank Countertop Model Makes Sense
A tank-fill countertop dishwasher is the best renter-friendly choice when the sink faucet is questionable. Pull-down sprayers, unusual aerator threads, low water pressure, and landlord restrictions can all make faucet-connected machines harder than they look. A tank model avoids most faucet compatibility problems because you fill the unit manually.

The tradeoff is capacity and counter space. Many compact tank machines need roughly 17 to 18 inches of counter width, 16 to 18 inches of depth, and enough vertical clearance below the upper cabinets to open the door and load dishes comfortably. Before buying, measure the actual counter-to-cabinet height, not just the countertop footprint.
When a Faucet-Connect Countertop Model Makes Sense
A faucet-connect countertop dishwasher works well if your sink has a standard threaded aerator and you have enough counter space beside the sink. These models usually offer more usable capacity than ultra-small tank units, but the hose has to route cleanly to the faucet and drain back into the sink.
On job sites, we treat the hose path as a safety issue. A hose stretched across a walkway or wrapped awkwardly around a sink edge is a trip hazard and a leak risk. The drain hose should sit securely in the sink basin during operation, and the faucet adapter should be removed or checked regularly so it does not loosen over time.
18-Inch Portable Dishwashers: Best Capacity Without Cabinet Work
An 18-inch portable dishwasher is the most practical middle ground for many renters. It rolls to the sink when needed, connects with a faucet adapter, drains into the sink, and rolls away afterward. Capacity is commonly about 8 place settings, which is a major step up from countertop units.
Current 2026 examples include budget 18-inch portable units around $570.93, SPT-style stainless portable models around $609.50 to $620.06, Danby 18-inch portable models around $741.30, and GE 18-inch stainless portable models around $949. Pricing usually follows the tub material, sanitize cycle, sound rating, caster quality, faucet adapter quality, and brand service network.
For a renter who cooks regularly, this category often makes the most sense. You get close to built-in compact capacity without asking the landlord to remove a cabinet or add plumbing. The downsides are storage space, rolling clearance, sink access during the cycle, and the need to connect and disconnect every time.
What to Check Before Buying a Portable Dishwasher
Measure the storage path before you compare features. An 18-inch portable model still needs floor space, door swing clearance, and a route to the sink. Check the unit width, depth with the handle, height under any counter overhangs, and the hose reach to the faucet.
Also check your lease. Portable does not automatically mean allowed. Some leases restrict appliance hookups, water-using devices, or anything connected to the sink. If the lease is unclear, get written permission before buying a 100-pound appliance that depends on faucet access.

For owners, an 18-inch built-in dishwasher is usually the best long-term apartment dishwasher. It preserves counter space, looks intentional, and avoids the daily setup of a portable machine. These models commonly handle about 8 place settings, while full-size 24-inch dishwashers often handle 12 to 16 place settings but may not fit older apartments, galley kitchens, ADUs, or compact condos.
In 2026, budget 18-inch built-ins start around $399 to $449 for compact models such as Midea or similar units. Midrange models with better racks or third racks can land around $699 to $809. Quiet premium 18-inch built-ins, including Bosch 300 Series-style models, commonly run around $1,099, with higher-end 18-inch Bosch models around $1,449.
For apartment living, stainless steel tubs and 46 to 52 dBA sound ratings are worth prioritizing when the budget allows. Plastic tubs can reduce the purchase price, but they often feel less substantial and may be noisier. A third rack helps with utensils and small tools, but it does not magically solve large plate, skillet, or stockpot limitations. Always compare the actual loading geometry, not just the place-setting count.
Built-In Fit and Cabinet Planning
A compact built-in dishwasher generally needs an 18-inch-wide opening, but rough openings vary by model. We confirm width, height, depth, door swing, toe-kick alignment, drain routing, water supply location, and electrical access before ordering the appliance. In small kitchens, a half-inch mistake can force cabinet modification.

- Please make sure the distance between your countertop and wall cupboard is more than 19.6" No installation needed: Adding water manually with the water filling guide included in the 1.32Gal built-in water tank, you can put the dishwasher in any suitable place without connecting to tap water. Or it can be hooked to the kitchen faucet directly with the included water hose (Adapter included).Water pressure : 0.04 - 1.0MPa.
- Ultra-compact Design: The ultra-compact design allows the dishwasher to wash 30+ items(Max to 9.5-inch plates) at a time while occupying a small area, which is ideal for small houses, apartments, dorms, boats, and campers/RVs.
- 6 Program Options: NORMAL, RAPID, HYGIENE, FRUIT, GLASS washing programs, and AIR REFRESH extra drying mode meet all your daily needs. Note: Use the standard dishwasher powders or detergents because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems. (No detergent is needed for the FRUIT program, and RAPID just needs half of the standard quantity. )
- High-Temp Hygiene: The Hygiene cycle heats the water up to 162℉, making it great for really dirty dishes and even safe for cleaning your little one's dinnerware.
- Extra Drying & Freshness: The Air Refresh mode circulates air to keep both your dishes and the machine dry and fresh. It helps remove moisture and odors, and if you don't need it, you can turn it off anytime.
Cabinet or counter modification can add about $150 to $400. If there is no existing dishwasher, the real cost is not the machine; it is creating the opening, adding a water supply, tying into the drain correctly, providing compliant power, and making the finished cabinet line look like it was planned from the start.
Real 2026 Cost Expectations
For a straightforward replacement where hookups already exist, labor-only installation commonly falls around $150 to $350, with many simple installs landing near $194. That usually assumes the cabinet opening already fits, the shutoff valve works, the drain route is usable, and electrical power is already in the right location.
All-in installed costs are much broader. A basic installed dishwasher project can be around $500 on the low end, about $1,100 for a common average, and about $1,700 on the high side. A broader professional range for 2026 is about $904 to $1,678 per dishwasher. Many professional installs fall around $680 to $1,200 per opening when the job is not unusually complex.
First-time installation without existing hookups is where costs climb. When plumbing, drain, electrical, cabinet cutting, and permit or inspection work are needed, expect roughly $1,350 to $1,700 or more all-in. Haul-away of an old unit can add about $50 to $150. Small materials such as supply lines, fittings, valves, brackets, and drain parts can add more, especially in older apartment kitchens where nothing is square, accessible, or standardized.
Energy, Water, and Noise Ratings That Matter
ENERGY STAR Version 7.0 criteria set clear thresholds for certified dishwashers. Standard dishwashers must use no more than 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle. Compact dishwashers must use no more than 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle. A standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 per year to run and can save about 5,800 gallons of water over its lifetime compared with less efficient alternatives.
For a small apartment, verify certification through ENERGY STAR’s product finder rather than relying only on a retailer badge. Model numbers change, finishes vary, and product pages are not always as precise as the label or certification database.
Noise is just as practical as energy use. In a detached house, a 55 dBA dishwasher may be tolerable if the kitchen is far from bedrooms. In a studio apartment, that same dishwasher can dominate the room. For open-plan apartments, we aim for 45 to 47 dBA when budget allows. A 50 to 52 dBA compact dishwasher is a reasonable budget compromise. Above 55 dBA, plan to run it when you are leaving the room.
Safety, Permits, and Code Issues Apartment Buyers Miss
Dishwashers combine water, electricity, cabinetry, and finished flooring. In a multifamily building, a small leak can damage the unit below. That is why we do not treat permanent dishwasher installation like a plug-and-play appliance swap unless the existing setup is already correct.

Some cities allow a simple replacement without a full permit if existing hookups are used, while others require permits for dishwasher, washer, disposal, or related appliance installations. Condo associations and HOAs may also require approval before work begins, especially if plumbing walls, flooring, or shared building systems are involved.
Modern electrical practice commonly requires GFCI protection for dishwashers. Drain requirements also matter. Depending on the local code and installation, the dishwasher drain may need an air gap or a high loop to reduce backflow risk. The disposal knockout must be removed when connecting to a new garbage disposal, and the drain hose must be routed so dirty sink water cannot run back into the dishwasher.
For permanent installs in apartments, we like using a leak pan or water alarm where practical. At minimum, after installation, run a full cycle and inspect the supply connection, shutoff valve, drain hose, disposal connection, air gap or high loop, and under-unit area. Dry paper towels placed under fittings make tiny leaks easy to spot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
A renter can usually handle a countertop dishwasher setup if the lease allows it, the faucet adapter fits correctly, the counter can support the appliance, and the hose routing is clean. Read the manual, do not force mismatched threads, and do not leave the machine running unattended the first few times. A portable roll-away unit is also manageable for many renters, but only if the faucet connection is stable and the hose does not create a tripping or drainage problem.
Hire a pro when you are installing a built-in dishwasher for the first time, cutting cabinets, adding a water line, modifying a drain, changing electrical service, hardwiring a unit, adding an outlet, or working in a condo where a leak affects other owners. Also hire help if the shutoff valve is corroded, the old drain line is brittle, the floor is uneven, or the existing opening is tight enough that forcing the unit could damage flooring or cabinets.
A simple replacement can take a professional about 1.5 to 3 hours when the old unit comes out cleanly and the hookups are usable. A first-time compact dishwasher installation can become a half-day or full-day project once cabinet work, plumbing, electrical, and inspection logistics are included.

Our Practical Top Picks by Use Case
Best Budget 18-Inch Built-In: Midea MDF18A1AST or Similar
At about $449, a Midea 18-inch stainless built-in is a strong budget fit for a small owner-occupied kitchen, ADU, or condo where the opening and hookups already exist. A 52 dBA sound rating is acceptable for the price, and an ENERGY STAR-rated compact unit can keep water and energy use in check. This is not the quietest or most refined option, but it gets a permanent dishwasher into an 18-inch opening without crossing into premium pricing.
Best Quiet Premium 18-Inch Built-In: Bosch 300 Series SPE53C55UC or Similar
At about $1,099, this class makes sense when the kitchen is open to the living area and noise matters. The extra money usually buys a quieter operating profile, better rack feel, stronger fit and finish, and a more polished built-in look. For a condo owner renovating a small kitchen, this is often the category we would price first if the budget allows.
Best Mid-Price Portable: SPT SD-9263SS or Similar
At about $609.50 to $620.06, an 18-inch SPT-style portable dishwasher is a practical renter pick when capacity matters more than countertop space. The 8-place-setting range is enough for many one- and two-person households, and the roll-away format avoids permanent cabinet work. Confirm faucet compatibility and storage space before buying.
Best Premium Portable: GE GPT145SSLSS or Similar
At about $949, this category is for renters or temporary occupants who want better brand support, a stainless look, a sanitize cycle, and a 52 dBA rating in a portable format. It costs nearly as much as some built-ins, so it makes the most sense when permanent installation is not allowed but daily dish volume justifies the capacity.
Best Countertop Choice: Black+Decker, Comfee, Airmsen, or Hermitlux-Style Compact Models
For studios, offices, and very small rentals, countertop models around $250 to $420 are the lowest-commitment path. Choose a tank model if faucet compatibility is uncertain. Choose a larger faucet-connect model if you have a standard faucet and need 4 to 6 place settings instead of 2. Before ordering, check plate diameter limits, door swing, cabinet clearance, and where the unit will drain.
Bottom Line
For most renters in small apartments, start with a countertop tank model if you wash light loads or an 18-inch portable dishwasher if you need real capacity. For owners, an 18-inch built-in dishwasher is the better long-term choice when the kitchen can accept a code-compliant installation. Spend extra for lower noise if the kitchen shares space with the living room, and verify ENERGY STAR certification by model number.

The biggest mistake is buying by brand ranking alone. Measure the kitchen, confirm the lease or HOA rules, check the faucet or cabinet opening, price the installation honestly, and think through where water could leak. A good apartment dishwasher should save time without stealing the kitchen’s limited workspace or creating a building maintenance problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size dishwasher is best for an apartment?
Most apartments are best served by a countertop dishwasher or an 18-inch dishwasher. Countertop models usually handle about 2 to 6 place settings, while 18-inch portable and built-in models commonly handle about 8 place settings.
Can renters use a dishwasher without installing one?
Yes, many renters use countertop tank models or portable roll-away dishwashers. The lease still matters, and faucet-connected models require compatible faucet threads, safe hose routing, and enough sink access during the cycle.
How much does an apartment dishwasher cost in 2026?
Mini countertop models commonly cost about $250 to $350, larger countertop models about $300 to $420, 18-inch portable models about $570 to $950, and 18-inch built-ins about $399 to $1,449 before installation.

For open-plan apartments, 45 to 47 dBA is a strong target. Budget compact models around 50 to 52 dBA are usually acceptable. Above roughly 55 dBA, the dishwasher can feel loud in a studio.
Do built-in dishwashers need a permit?
It depends on the city, building, and scope of work. Simple replacements may be treated differently from first-time installations. New plumbing, drain, electrical, cabinet changes, or condo work may trigger permits, inspections, or HOA approval.
Is a portable dishwasher better than a built-in dishwasher?
A portable dishwasher is better for renters who cannot alter cabinets or plumbing. A built-in dishwasher is better for owners who want a permanent, cleaner-looking installation and can provide proper water, drain, and electrical connections.
