How to Choose a Washing Machine That Actually Soaks Clothes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A good soaking washer should do three things well: hold stained laundry in water long enough to loosen soil, move automatically into the wash cycle, and fit your laundry room without creating drain, vibration, or water-damage problems. For most homeowners, the best choice is a top-load washer with a verified Presoak, Soak cycle, Deep Fill, or built-in faucet feature. For homeowners who care most about energy use, fabric care, and everyday loads, a front-load washer with strong stain, steam, or sanitize cycles may be the better fit.

On our job sites, the washer itself is only half the decision. We look at the valves, drain standpipe, floor, pan, hose routing, electrical protection, and clearance before calling any appliance a good buy. A $1,000 washer is a poor investment if it blocks shutoff valves, shakes across a weak second-floor laundry room, or discharges faster than an old drain can handle.

Here is the practical rule: buy the washer for the stains you actually have, then make sure the room is ready for the machine. Muddy work pants, sports uniforms, baby clothes, towels, pet bedding, and food stains all benefit from soaking. Set-in dye transfer, mildew odor, and delicate fabrics that should not sit wet are different problems and need different treatment.

What Counts as a Real Soaking Function?

Manufacturers use several names for soaking features, and they are not all equal. Before buying, pull up the model’s use-and-care manual and read the cycle chart. Retailer filters and short marketing descriptions are often incomplete.

True soak or presoak cycle

A true soak or presoak cycle fills the tub, lets the clothes sit for a programmed period, agitates or tumbles intermittently, then continues into the wash cycle. This is the most convenient option because you do not have to return to the machine and restart it. Whirlpool commonly labels this as a Presoak Option. Maytag often uses Soaking Cycles, Deep Fill, built-in faucet features, or stain-focused options such as Extra Power depending on the model.

Built-in faucet plus manual soak

Some top-load washers include a faucet inside the tub. This is useful for pretreating collars, muddy knees, socks, and towels before the cycle starts. It is not always the same as an automatic soak cycle. In many homes, though, this is one of the most practical features because it keeps pretreatment inside the washer instead of moving stains between a sink, bucket, and laundry basket.

Deep Fill is helpful, but not always a soak

Deep Fill adds more water to selected cycles. That helps with bulky towels, dirty workwear, and heavily soiled loads, especially in a top-load washer. But Deep Fill alone does not prove that the washer will hold clothes in water for a timed soak. Confirm whether the model has a separate soak, presoak, or pause-and-soak instruction in the manual.

Steam and stain cycles are different

Front-load washers often rely on steam, stain, sanitize, or soil-level settings rather than a tub of standing water. That can work very well for daily laundry and certain stains, but it is not the same experience as soaking a load of muddy uniforms in a deep tub. Samsung and LG both offer strong stain and smart-cycle machines, but model-level verification matters. Some top-load models that look like obvious soaking machines do not include a dedicated Soak cycle or Soak option.

Best Washer Types for Soaking Laundry

The best soaking washer depends on what you wash every week. A household with construction clothes, baseball uniforms, bath towels, and kids’ clothes has different needs than a household washing mostly office wear and sheets.

Washer type Best for Soaking strength Typical 2026 price Watch-outs
Top-load agitator Mud, workwear, towels, sports uniforms Strong, especially with Presoak, Soak, or Deep Fill $500-$1,200 Uses more water; can be harder on delicate fabrics
Top-load removable agitator Mixed households that need both bulky capacity and stain work Strong if soak is verified $750-$1,200 Confirm the cycle chart, not just the sales page
Top-load impeller Large loads, comforters, everyday family laundry Good if Deep Fill or soak is included $700-$1,300 Heavy soil may need careful loading and pretreatment
Front-load washer Efficiency, gentle fabric care, stacked laundry rooms Usually stain/steam based rather than tub soaking $800-$1,800+ Needs door ventilation and regular gasket cleaning
Premium smart or all-in-one Large households, compact utility spaces, advanced controls Varies widely by model $1,200-$2,500+ Repairs and parts can cost more; verify service access

Our Shortlist Criteria for a Soak-Capable Washer

We do not recommend buying by brand name alone. The same manufacturer may sell one model with a true soak option and another similar-looking model without it. Use these checks before you spend the money.

1. The manual confirms soak behavior

Look for language such as Presoak, Soak, Soaking Cycle, StainSoak, or a cycle chart showing a timed hold before agitation or wash. If the only feature is “pause,” you may be doing a manual soak. That can still work, but it is less convenient and easier to forget.

2. Capacity matches the real load

For small families, 3.5 to 4.4 cubic feet is usually enough. For large families, bulky towels, bedding, uniforms, or work clothes, 4.5 cubic feet and larger is more practical. Bigger is not automatically better. A 5.5 cubic foot washer still needs enough room for the lid or door, hose bends, drain access, and service clearance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. The washer can handle dirty laundry without babysitting

For mud, sweat, food, and sports stains, look for a top-load agitator or removable-agitator model with Presoak, Deep Fill, and soil-level controls. A built-in faucet is a real convenience for rinsing grit before it reaches the drain pump. For everyday loads where efficiency matters more, look for a front-loader with stain, steam, sanitize, and high spin speed.

4. The room can handle the machine

Measure the laundry space before choosing a model. Include the machine width, depth with hoses, door swing or lid height, and 1 to 6 inches of rear clearance depending on hose routing and manufacturer instructions. Check the path from driveway to laundry room: exterior door, hallway, stair turn, laundry closet opening, and any tight 30-inch interior doors.

2026 Cost Guide: Washer, Installation, and Room Readiness

For a basic replacement where the hookups are already correct, the appliance price is the main cost. For an older laundry room, the better budget includes the washer, hoses, pan, valves, delivery, haul-away, and possible plumbing or electrical corrections.

Item Typical 2026 US cost What it includes
Basic top-load washer $500-$800 Entry models with basic wash cycles; some include presoak
Midrange soak-capable washer $750-$1,200 Presoak, Deep Fill, stain cycles, smart diagnostics, built-in faucet, or larger capacity
Premium washer $1,200-$2,500+ Large capacity, advanced front-load, all-in-one, commercial-style, steam, auto dispensing, Wi-Fi
Washer/dryer pair $1,000-$2,300 Common appliance-only range before complex utility work
Basic installation with existing hookups $129-$263 average range; often around $184 Delivery connection, leveling, basic hose hookup, testing
Labor-only appliance install $100-$300 per set Simple washer/dryer connection where utilities are ready
New hookups or laundry relocation $650-$2,000+ Supply, drain, vent, electrical, wall repair, permits depending on scope
Complex new install $1,500+ Finished walls, long utility runs, panel work, floor drain, second-floor protection, permits

Do not forget the smaller line items. Braided stainless washer hoses, quarter-turn shutoff valves, a drain pan, vibration pads, a leak sensor, and an automatic shutoff valve are minor compared with water damage. For a second-floor laundry room, we treat leak detection and accessible shutoffs as construction-grade protection, not luxury upgrades.

Laundry Room Requirements Before You Buy

A washer with a soak cycle holds more water and may discharge a heavy load quickly. That makes the laundry room more important, especially in older homes.

Drain and standpipe

Many modern laundry installations call for a 2-inch standpipe with a proper trap and venting. If your current drain is old, undersized, slow, or prone to gurgling, do not assume a larger high-efficiency washer will be fine. Watch for water backing up during spin discharge, sewer smell, slow utility sink drainage, or staining around the standpipe. Those are signs to bring in a plumber before the new washer arrives.

Water supply and valves

Check both hot and cold valves. They should turn fully off without leaking. Old gate valves, frozen handles, corroded hose bibs, and rubber hoses older than 5 years are common failure points. We prefer quarter-turn valves and braided stainless hoses. If the laundry box is buried behind the washer where no one can reach it, the layout needs attention.

Electrical protection

Laundry areas commonly require a dedicated 20-amp circuit, and current code practice often involves GFCI protection, AFCI protection, or both depending on local adoption and the exact location. If the washer shares a circuit with lights, a freezer, or multiple outlets, or if the receptacle is loose, ungrounded, or not protected as required locally, call a licensed electrician. Appliance delivery crews usually will not correct wiring defects.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Floor strength and vibration

Front-load washers can spin at high speed, and large top-load washers can get heavy when filled. On a slab, vibration is usually easier to manage. On a framed second floor, check bounce, slope, and leveling. A washer that walks during spin can damage hoses, pans, trim, drywall, and shutoff valves. Use the manufacturer’s leveling instructions, keep all four feet firmly planted, and consider vibration pads only after the machine is properly leveled.

Best Feature Combinations by Household

For muddy workwear and construction clothes

Choose a top-load agitator or removable-agitator washer with Presoak or Soak, Deep Fill, heavy soil settings, and a built-in faucet if available. Capacity around 4.5 to 5.3 cubic feet is a practical range for heavy clothes without oversizing the room. Shake off loose mud outside first. The washer is not a dumpster for gravel, sand, screws, or job-site debris.

For sports uniforms and kids’ clothes

Look for automatic presoak, warm/cold flexibility, heavy soil settings, and a rinse option. Grass, sweat, clay, food, and sunscreen stains respond better when treated early. A 30-minute presoak can be enough for fresh stains; badly soiled uniforms may need 60 minutes depending on the detergent and fabric label.

For towels, bedding, and large families

Capacity matters, but drainage matters too. A 5.0 cubic foot or larger washer can reduce load count, yet it may also increase discharge volume. Choose Deep Fill only when the laundry actually needs it. For normal loads, high-efficiency cycles save water and reduce drying time when paired with a strong spin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For efficiency-focused homes

ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy and about 30% less water than standard washers and can save about $530 in energy costs over the product lifetime. Compare IMEF and IWF ratings. IMEF measures energy performance. IWF compares water use independent of washer capacity, and a lower IWF means less water used per cubic foot of capacity.

The Department of Energy finalized amended residential clothes washer efficiency standards in 2024, with compliance required starting March 1, 2028. That means 2026 buyers should expect more emphasis on efficient water use and revised product lines before that deadline. A soaking feature is useful, but do not ignore long-term energy and water costs.

How to Use a Soak Cycle Without Damaging Clothes

Soaking works best when the stain, detergent, water temperature, and fabric all match. More time and hotter water are not always better.

  • Mud: let it dry, brush off solids, then presoak. Do not grind wet mud deeper into fabric.
  • Blood and protein stains: start with cold water and an enzyme detergent. Hot water can set the stain.
  • Sweat and body soil: use enzyme detergent and allow 30 to 60 minutes if the fabric label permits.
  • Dingy whites and organic stains: oxygen bleach is often safer than chlorine bleach for regular soaking, but check labels first.
  • Towels: avoid detergent overload. Residue traps odor and makes towels feel stiff.
  • Delicates, wool, leather trim, and unstable dyes: do not soak unless the care label allows it.

After wash day, leave the lid or door open so the tub can dry. Run the tub-clean cycle on the schedule recommended by the manufacturer. Soaking features increase moisture exposure, and a washer that stays damp with detergent residue will eventually smell.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

A homeowner can usually handle a like-for-like washer replacement if the hookups are modern, accessible, and in good condition. That means the valves shut off cleanly, the drain accepts water without backing up, the outlet is correct, the floor is level, and the washer fits through the delivery path.

Reasonable DIY tasks

  • Measuring the laundry space, doors, stairs, and hose clearance.
  • Comparing manuals for verified soak, presoak, and Deep Fill features.
  • Replacing old rubber hoses with braided stainless hoses if valves are sound.
  • Leveling the washer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Adding a plug-in leak sensor near the washer pan or valves.

Hire a licensed pro when

  • The washer needs a new drain, standpipe, trap, vent, or laundry box.
  • The drain overflows during discharge or smells like sewer gas.
  • Valves are corroded, frozen, leaking, or recessed behind finished walls.
  • The electrical circuit is shared, ungrounded, loose, damaged, or missing required protection.
  • You are relocating laundry to a hallway, closet, basement, garage, or second floor.
  • You need a permit for plumbing, electrical, structural, or relocation work under local rules.

Permits vary by city and county, but relocating a laundry room usually crosses into permitted work because it can involve drainage, venting, water supply, electrical circuits, wall repair, and sometimes structural framing. If you are only replacing a washer on existing compliant hookups, a permit is usually not required. If you are opening walls, adding a standpipe, moving utilities, or changing circuits, check locally before work begins.

Buying Checklist Before Delivery Day

Use this checklist before the truck shows up. It prevents the most common appliance-day failures we see in remodels and service calls.

  • Confirm the model manual shows a real Presoak, Soak, Soaking Cycle, or clear manual soak instructions.
  • Measure width, depth, height, lid swing, door swing, rear hose clearance, and service access.
  • Confirm the delivery path, including stairs, turns, thresholds, and laundry closet doors.
  • Inspect hot and cold valves for shutoff, corrosion, leakage, and accessibility.
  • Check hose age and replace old rubber hoses.
  • Watch the existing washer drain during spin discharge before removal.
  • Confirm the outlet and circuit meet local laundry requirements.
  • Plan for a drain pan, leak sensor, and automatic shutoff valve in second-floor laundry rooms.
  • Check whether pedestal, stacking kit, long hoses, haul-away, or door removal adds cost.
  • Keep the manual accessible for cleaning cycles, detergent limits, and error codes.

Bottom Line: The Best Soaking Washer Is the One Your Room Can Support

If your laundry includes muddy workwear, sports uniforms, towels, and kids’ clothes, start with a top-load washer that has a verified soak or presoak function, Deep Fill, and enough capacity for bulky loads. A removable agitator is a strong compromise for households that need both stain work and room for bedding. If your priority is lower water use, gentler washing, and stackable design, look at efficient front-load models with strong stain and steam cycles.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Budget $500 to $800 for a basic top-loader, $750 to $1,200 for many strong midrange soaking machines, and $1,200 to $2,500 or more for premium large-capacity, smart, front-load, or all-in-one models. For installation, simple existing-hookup jobs often land around $129 to $263, while new hookups or relocation can run $650 to $2,000 or more before finishes and permit costs.

The washer should make laundry easier, not create a water-damage risk. Verify the soak feature in the manual, measure the room, inspect the drain and valves, and treat leak protection as part of the purchase. That is how you get cleaner clothes and a laundry setup that holds up over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Presoak the same as a Soak cycle?

Not always. Presoak usually means the washer adds a timed soaking period before the wash cycle. A Soak cycle may be a separate cycle. Always check the model manual to confirm whether the machine automatically moves into washing or requires you to restart it.

Are top-load washers better for soaking than front-load washers?

Usually, yes. Top-load washers are easier for tub soaking, pretreating, Deep Fill, and adding items. Front-load washers are often better for efficiency and gentle fabric care, but they may handle stains through steam or stain cycles instead of standing water.

How much should I budget for a washer with a soaking function in 2026?

Expect about $500-$800 for basic top-load models, $750-$1,200 for popular midrange soak or presoak models, and $1,200-$2,500+ for premium front-load, smart, all-in-one, or extra-large machines before installation and accessories.

Can I install a new washing machine myself?

Yes, if it is a like-for-like replacement and the valves, drain, outlet, floor, and clearances are already correct. Hire a pro if you need new plumbing, a 2-inch standpipe, electrical corrections, laundry relocation, or second-floor water-damage protection.

How long should clothes soak in a washer?

Fresh stains often need 30 minutes. Heavy soil, sweat, towels, or uniforms may need 60 minutes if the fabric label allows it. Avoid long soaking for delicate fabrics, unstable dyes, wool, leather trim, or anything that should not remain wet.

Do ENERGY STAR washers still soak well?

They can, but you need to verify the specific model. ENERGY STAR certified washers use about 20% less energy and 30% less water than standard washers, so many rely on smarter cycles rather than simply filling the tub with more water.
