The best American-made furniture company depends on what you are buying. For a whole-home modern look, Room & Board is hard to beat. For heirloom hardwood, Stickley, Thos. Moser, Copeland, Vermont Woods Studios, and Gat Creek deserve serious attention. For custom sofas and sectionals, BenchMade Modern, Maiden Home, Medley, Cisco Home, and American Leather cover different budgets, materials, and comfort priorities. For value bedroom furniture made at scale in the U.S., Vaughan-Bassett is one of the clearest choices.
On our job sites, the furniture decision often affects more than style. A 112-inch sectional can fail at a stair turn. A floating media cabinet may need wall blocking before drywall. A powered recliner needs an outlet in the right place. A tall dresser in a nursery needs anti-tip anchoring. A built-in banquette can trigger electrical, HVAC, or permit questions if it changes outlets, vents, egress, or permanent structure.
This guide ranks 12 strong American-made furniture companies, but it also shows how to buy like a builder: verify the origin claim, measure the delivery path, understand safety labels, budget for delivery and assembly, and decide when freestanding furniture should become true built-in work.
The Shortlist: 12 American-Made Furniture Companies to Know
American furniture manufacturing is still a large, active industry. U.S. market estimates vary by methodology, but the scale is real: 2026 U.S. furniture revenue is estimated around $249.51 billion by one market outlook, while another estimated the U.S. market at $180.55 billion in 2025 with growth projected into the 2030s. Industry data also points to more than 5,400 U.S. furniture and fixture manufacturers, about 269,000 workers, and roughly $100 billion in reported sales, with the South and Midwest as major production regions.

That does not mean every “American” furniture claim means the same thing. Some pieces are fully made in the U.S. Some are made in the U.S. with imported fabric, leather, hardware, or mechanisms. Some are assembled here from imported components. Before spending $3,000 to $10,000 on a sofa, sleeper, table, or bedroom set, ask what is made where.

How We Judge American-Made Furniture on Real Projects
We look at furniture the same way we look at finish carpentry: it has to fit, hold up, and make sense for the room. A pretty piece that blocks a supply register, leaves no walkway, or cannot be delivered is a failed purchase.
For a living room, we want at least 30 to 36 inches of main walking clearance where possible. Between a sofa and coffee table, 16 to 18 inches usually works. For dining rooms, plan roughly 36 inches from table edge to wall or furniture so chairs can pull out; 42 to 48 inches is better where people need to pass behind seated guests. For bedrooms, leave about 24 inches at the side of a bed as a minimum, with 30 inches or more feeling better in daily use.
Before ordering any large piece, measure the product width, depth, height, diagonal depth, and packaging size. Then measure doors, hallways, stair turns, elevator doors, ceiling heights, and the final room. A 40-inch-deep sofa may clear a 36-inch front door if the legs come off and the diagonal works. A sleeper sofa with a rigid mechanism may not be nearly as forgiving.

1. Room & Board: Best for Modern Whole-Home Furnishing
Room & Board is the easiest recommendation for homeowners who want a coordinated, modern home without hunting across a dozen trade-only showrooms. The company states that more than 90% of its furniture and decor is made by U.S. artisans, which is unusually transparent for a national retailer.
Its biggest advantage is consistency. Sofas, dining tables, beds, storage, office pieces, and outdoor furniture share a clean design language. That matters during remodeling because furniture, flooring, paint, lighting, and millwork need to work together. When a client wants walnut case goods, a neutral sectional, a clean dining table, and a media cabinet in one project, Room & Board can simplify decisions.
Budget-wise, expect many quality sofas to land in the $2,000 to $5,000+ range depending on size, fabric, leather, and configuration. Its advertised $159 flat-rate full-service delivery is also useful for planning because delivery costs can otherwise vary sharply by stairs, distance, and piece size.
2. Stickley: Best Heirloom Hardwood Furniture
Stickley belongs on the list for homeowners who want furniture that feels closer to architectural millwork than disposable decor. Its mission and arts-and-crafts heritage, heavy wood construction, and long service life make it a natural fit for traditional homes, libraries, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms.

This is not budget furniture. Online pricing shows heirloom pieces starting in the several-thousand-dollar range, including a Bow Arm Morris Chair around $4,799 starting. Dining tables, cabinets, beds, and larger case goods can climb quickly with wood species, finish, and collection.
From a builder’s standpoint, Stickley pieces deserve planning. Check floor protection, stair capacity, clearances, and sunlight exposure. Solid wood moves with humidity, so keep indoor relative humidity in a reasonable range, commonly around 35% to 55%, and avoid placing fine hardwood furniture directly over aggressive heat registers.
3. Vaughan-Bassett: Best Value American-Made Bedroom Furniture
Vaughan-Bassett is a practical answer for homeowners who want American-made bedroom furniture without jumping straight to heirloom pricing. The company states that 100% of its furniture is crafted in the U.S. by American employees and identifies itself as the largest U.S. manufacturer of wooden adult bedroom furniture.
The sweet spot is beds, dressers, chests, and bedroom sets. For guest rooms, kids’ rooms, and primary bedrooms where budget discipline matters, that combination of domestic production and scale is valuable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor dressers and chests, safety matters as much as finish. Clothing storage units should comply with current stability requirements under the STURDY Act framework, and tall or heavy pieces should be anchored to the wall. In a nursery or child’s room, anchoring is not optional in our book. We plan the furniture wall early, locate studs or blocking, and make sure baseboards do not prevent the anti-tip hardware from sitting properly.
4. Vermont Woods Studios: Best Sustainable Hardwood Option
Vermont Woods Studios is a strong fit for buyers who care about solid hardwood, domestic production, and sustainability. Its beds commonly start around $2,200 to $3,500+, with pricing rising for larger sizes, premium woods, storage configurations, and matching case goods.
Lead time is the main planning issue. Many made-to-order hardwood pieces can run around 16 to 20 weeks. That is fine if furniture is coordinated with a remodel schedule, but it is a problem if the homeowner waits until final paint to order the bed and dresser.
For hardwood furniture, order wood samples before locking finishes. Cherry, walnut, maple, and oak all read differently under warm LEDs, cool daylight, and next to different flooring undertones. We like to view samples in the actual room at morning, afternoon, and night before deciding.

5. BenchMade Modern: Best Custom Sofa Sizing
BenchMade Modern is a good choice when standard sofa dimensions are just slightly wrong. The company advertises custom sofas made to order in the U.S., by hand in California or Texas. Many sofas currently start around $2,830 to $4,080, with sofa beds around $4,080+ before upgrades.
That sizing flexibility is useful in remodels. A 92-inch sofa may look undersized on a long wall, while a 108-inch sofa blocks circulation. Being able to tune the length, fabric, leg style, and configuration can solve the room without moving walls or forcing a sectional where it does not belong.
Before ordering, tape the footprint on the floor. Then check the delivery path, not just the room. For sectionals, confirm whether the pieces separate, whether legs are removable, and whether the longest component can turn through the tightest stair or hallway.
6. Maiden Home: Best Luxury Upholstery for Polished Rooms
Maiden Home is known for North Carolina handcrafted upholstery with a refined residential look. The Dune sofa starts around $3,125 custom, and white-glove delivery starts around $225. That puts it in the premium sofa category, but not necessarily in the highest custom-showroom tier.

Order swatches. Performance woven chenille, linen blends, boucles, velvets, and leathers can look dramatically different in person than they do online.
For high-use homes, we advise prioritizing replaceable cushions, durable performance fabrics, and serviceable construction over trendy silhouettes. A sofa that looks sharp for six months but cannot recover from kids, pets, sunlight, and daily sitting is a poor investment.
7. American Leather: Best Sleeper Sofas and Motion Seating
American Leather is a major name for U.S.-handcrafted sleeper sofas, recliners, motion seating, and extensive leather and fabric customization. Retailer pricing commonly shows many Comfort Sleepers in the $3,999 to $10,049 range, depending on size, upholstery, mechanism, and configuration.
Sleeper and motion furniture needs more planning than a standard sofa. Check open-bed depth, recliner clearance, outlet placement, cord management, and the route for delivery. A queen sleeper can require roughly 90 inches or more from the back of the sofa to the foot of the open mattress, depending on model. If a coffee table, fireplace hearth, or walkway is in that zone, the sleeper may technically fit but function badly.
For powered recliners, we prefer floor outlets or well-placed wall outlets before finishes are complete. Extension cords across a living room are a trip hazard and make an expensive room feel improvised.
8. Medley: Best Non-Toxic and Natural-Material Upholstery
Medley is a strong candidate for homeowners focused on healthier material choices. Its U.S.-handcrafted sofas commonly start around $2,395 to $4,995 depending on model, size, foam versus natural latex and wool, upholstery, and configuration.
For clients sensitive to odor, off-gassing, or synthetic materials, Medley’s options can be worth the upgrade. Look closely at cushion fill, fabric content, adhesives, wood frame details, and finish information. Low-VOC priorities should be handled as a full-room strategy, not one product decision. Paint, flooring adhesive, cabinetry, mattresses, rugs, and furniture all contribute.
For upholstered furniture, look for required flammability labeling. Federal rules for upholstered furniture sold for residential use address smoldering ignition risk, and the product should carry appropriate manufacturer and compliance information. If a seller cannot answer basic label questions, slow down before buying.

Copeland Furniture is a Vermont manufacturer known for clean hardwood bedroom, dining, and office furniture. Its look works especially well in homes with modern trim, simple cabinetry, wide-plank floors, and restrained finishes.
Expect premium hardwood pricing. Dining tables frequently run $2,000 to $6,000+ across the American-made market, with price driven by size, species, extension mechanisms, finish, and joinery. Beds often start near $2,200 to $3,500 for solid domestic hardwood options and rise from there.
For dining rooms, confirm chair count before choosing the table. A 72-inch rectangular table usually seats six comfortably. An 84- to 96-inch table is better for eight. If you want ten, you are often looking at 108 inches or longer, and the room needs to support that with chair clearance.
10. Gat Creek: Best Appalachian Custom Solid Wood
Gat Creek focuses on solid wood furniture with custom options and a clear connection to its builders. It is a strong fit for homeowners who want bedroom, dining, office, or storage furniture that can be tailored by wood, finish, hardware, and configuration.

- INCLUDES - Teak Cleaner (17 oz), Teak Brightener (17 oz), Teak Oil (17 oz). Does not include Lint Free Cloth, Scrub Brush, or Bucket. For these additional items see the Garden Restoration Kit.
- STEP ONE - CLEANING: Dust off any dirt and grime from the surface of your furniture. Take the Teak Cleaner for outdoor furniture and shake the bottle well before use. Mix the cleaner into a bucket of warm water at a ratio of 1:5 (1 part Teak Cleaner to 5 parts warm water). Dip a Scrubbing Brush into the mixture and scrub the surface to loosen and dirt and grime. Wipe the wood down using a clean, lint-free cloth. Rinse the wood with clean water to rid of any excess Teak Cleaner.
- STEP TWO - BRIGHTENING: Brightening will further enhance the natural color of the your patio furniture sets. Take the Teak Brightener and shake the bottle well before use, put on the protective gloves, and mix the Teak Brightener into a bucket of water at a ratio of 1:1. Apply to a clean, lint-free cloth and rub into the garden furniture following the direction of the grain. Leave for a few minutes and then rinse down.
- STEP THREE - OILING: Take the Teak Oil and shake the bottle well before use. Ensure the outdoor furniture set is clean and dry. Apply the Teak Oil liberally to a lint-free cloth and rub into the garden furniture following the direction of the grain. Leave for a few minutes and then wipe off any excess. Leave the Oil to thoroughly soak in and dry for between 4-6 hours. For best results and to help make future maintenance easier, you should apply three coats of oil to your garden furniture
- MAINTENANCE: You should clean and re-oil garden/pool furniture once a year. You shouldn’t need to use the Brightener every time but you can choose to do so if you think the furniture has weathered badly, or if you don’t get round to applying the oil every year.
Custom case goods are where planning pays off. Measure outlets, switch plates, window trim, baseboard height, return vents, radiator covers, and door swings. A dresser that fits the wall on paper may still block a receptacle or collide with a closet door.
In humid or coastal climates, solid wood deserves extra care. Wood expands and contracts across the grain. Keep furniture out of damp storage, acclimate pieces before final placement when practical, and avoid drastic humidity swings. The goal is not a museum environment; it is a stable home.
11. Thos. Moser: Best Premium Craft Furniture
Thos. Moser is for homeowners who want furniture as a long-term craft purchase. Dining chairs, tables, desks, benches, and case pieces in this tier can anchor a room for decades. The price reflects domestic labor, hardwood selection, joinery, finishing, and design refinement.
On a remodel, this is the kind of furniture we plan around early. Lighting height over the dining table, rug size, floor finish durability, doorway clearance, and wall color all affect how the piece performs in the finished room.
If you are spending premium money on a dining set, do not guess at rug size. A dining rug should typically extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides so chairs stay on the rug when pulled back. For a 42-by-84-inch table, that points to a rug around 8 by 10 feet as a practical minimum.
12. Cisco Home: Best Relaxed Custom Upholstery
Cisco Home fits homeowners who want softer, more relaxed upholstery: slipcovered sofas, comfortable chairs, beds, and custom pieces with a lived-in California feel. It is a good counterpoint to sharper modern furniture when the home calls for texture and ease.
Because origin can vary by line and material, confirm the item-level manufacturing details before buying. Ask whether the frame is made in the U.S., where upholstery happens, and whether fabrics, fills, and hardware are domestic or imported.
Slipcovers can be practical, but they are not magic. Washability depends on the specific fabric and construction. Before buying for a family room, ask whether covers are removable, whether they are machine washable or dry clean only, and whether replacement covers can be ordered later.
What American-Made Furniture Really Costs in 2026
Good U.S.-made furniture usually costs more than imported fast furniture because it relies on domestic labor, smaller production runs, better materials, and frequent customization. It also often takes longer. Many hardwood and upholstery orders are made to order by fabric, leather, wood species, finish, size, cushion fill, and hardware.
| Item or Service | Typical 2026 Cost | What Changes the Price |
|---|---|---|
| American-made sofa | $2,400-$4,000 starting | Length, cushion fill, fabric grade, frame, legs, and delivery |
| Sectional | $4,000-$10,000+ | Number of pieces, chaise, performance fabric, leather, and custom sizing |
| Sleeper sofa | $4,000-$10,000+ | Mattress size, mechanism, upholstery, and motion features |
| Solid wood bed | $2,200-$3,500+ starting | Wood species, size, storage drawers, finish, and headboard design |
| Dining table | $2,000-$6,000+ | Length, leaves, walnut or cherry upgrades, edge profile, and finish |
| White-glove delivery | $150-$350 common range | Stairs, elevators, rural access, oversized pieces, and distance |
| Furniture assembly labor | About $34/hour average | Piece complexity, number of rooms, wall anchoring, and packaging removal |
| Typical assembly job | About $102-$221 nationally; many around $148 | Simple chairs cost less; wardrobes, beds, and wall units cost more |
For assembly by piece, simple side tables and chairs often run $40 to $75. Standard desks and bookcases often run $75 to $150. Beds, wardrobes, and sectionals can run $150 to $300+. Complex wall units or many-room installs can exceed $500.
The right budget is total installed cost, not the website price. Add swatches, wood samples, freight, in-home delivery, assembly, anchoring, disposal of old furniture, sales tax, and possible carpenter or electrician time for wall-mounted, powered, or built-in elements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Origin Verification: Made in USA, Assembled in USA, or Something Else?
Before buying, ask direct questions. “Made in America” can be used casually in sales copy, but the details matter. A sofa may have a U.S.-built frame and U.S. upholstery labor with imported fabric. A recliner may be assembled domestically with imported motion hardware. A dining table may be domestically built from North American hardwood. These are different claims.

Questions to Ask Before You Order
Ask where the frame is made, where final assembly occurs, where the wood is sourced, where upholstery is cut and sewn, and whether major hardware or mechanisms are imported. For wood furniture, ask whether the piece is solid wood, veneer over plywood, veneer over MDF, or particleboard. For upholstered furniture, ask about frame material, suspension, cushion fill, and whether replacement cushions or covers are available.
For composite wood components, TSCA Title VI formaldehyde rules matter. For dressers and other clothing storage units, ask about current stability compliance. For upholstered furniture, look for required flammability and manufacturer labels. A reputable seller should be able to answer without improvising.
Builder’s Fit Check Before You Buy
Furniture planning should happen before final remodel finishes. Blocking for floating shelves, headboards, media cabinets, benches, and wall-mounted storage is cheap before drywall and expensive afterward. The same goes for outlets behind powered sofas, sconces above nightstands, and floor outlets under reading chairs.
Measure the Path, Not Just the Room
Measure every tight point from truck to final placement: exterior stairs, porch turns, entry door width, vestibules, hallways, stair landings, ceiling height, elevator doors, and room openings. For large sofas, also check diagonal depth and removable legs. For king beds and tall armoires, confirm ceiling height at stair turns.

Check Walls, Vents, Outlets, and Egress
A media cabinet can block outlets. A sectional can cover a floor register. A tall bookcase can interfere with a window lock. A storage bench near a bedroom window can affect emergency access. In older homes, baseboard heat and radiators often dictate furniture placement more than the floor plan does.
Plan Anchoring Early
Dressers, wardrobes, bookcases, tall cabinets, and freestanding storage should be anchored, especially in homes with children. Stud fastening is best. If the layout requires a tall piece on a wall without studs in the right location, add blocking during construction or use proper rated anchors for the wall assembly.
When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
DIY is fine for chairs, side tables, simple beds, basic desks, and smaller bookcases if the product is designed for consumer assembly and you have the time. Expect $40 to $75 worth of labor value for small pieces and $75 to $150 for standard desks or bookcases if you hire it out.
Hire a pro for tall wardrobes, wall-mounted units, Murphy beds, heavy dressers, large sectionals, sleeper sofas, powered recliners, and anything requiring anchoring into uncertain wall conditions. Also hire help when furniture interacts with electrical, HVAC, plumbing, tile, stone, or custom trim.

Built-ins are a different category. A freestanding bookcase usually does not need a permit. A true built-in that modifies electrical, covers mechanical systems, changes egress, attaches permanently to structure, or becomes part of a larger remodel may require permits or licensed trade work depending on local code. Before building a wall-to-wall media unit, confirm outlet access, ventilation, fireplace clearances, and inspection requirements.
Materials: What Holds Up Best?
Solid wood is durable, repairable, and attractive, but it moves with humidity and costs more. Veneer over quality plywood can be excellent, especially for large panels where solid wood movement would be a problem. Veneer over MDF can be stable and smooth for painted or modern pieces, but it is less forgiving with water damage and heavy abuse. Particleboard is the budget option and can work in low-stress applications, but it usually performs worst under repeated moves, overloaded fasteners, and moisture.
For sofas, the frame, suspension, cushions, and fabric matter more than a single marketing phrase. Hardwood or engineered hardwood frames, quality suspension, high-resilience foam, down blends, latex, wool, and replaceable cushions can all be good depending on the goal. For a family room, performance fabric and replaceable parts often matter more than a delicate designer textile.
For coastal and humid areas, finish selection matters. Avoid storing new wood furniture in damp garages. Let pieces acclimate inside the conditioned home. Keep air moving, control humidity, and use coasters and pads. Solid wood can last generations, but it should not be treated like plastic laminate.
Our Practical Ranking by Use Case
For a modern whole-home package, start with Room & Board. For heirloom hardwood, compare Stickley, Thos. Moser, Copeland, Vermont Woods Studios, and Gat Creek. For value bedroom furniture with a clear U.S.-made claim, Vaughan-Bassett is the practical pick. For custom sofa sizing, BenchMade Modern is especially useful. For luxury upholstery, look at Maiden Home. For sleepers, recliners, and motion seating, American Leather deserves a close look. For lower-toxicity upholstery options, Medley is a strong candidate. For relaxed custom upholstery, Cisco Home rounds out the list.
The best purchase is the one that fits the room, survives the household, arrives without drama, and can be maintained. Buy samples first, check the origin claim, confirm lead time, measure the delivery path, and budget the full installed cost. That is how you avoid turning a furniture order into a construction problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
What furniture brands are actually made in the USA?
Strong American-made furniture brands include Room & Board, Stickley, Vaughan-Bassett, Vermont Woods Studios, BenchMade Modern, Maiden Home, American Leather, Medley, Copeland Furniture, Gat Creek, Thos. Moser, and Cisco Home. Always verify at the product level because some brands use imported fabrics, hardware, leather, or mechanisms.
Is American-made furniture worth the higher price?
It can be, especially for sofas, dining tables, beds, dressers, and pieces you expect to keep for 10 to 30 years. The value is usually better materials, domestic labor, customization, repairability, and clearer accountability. It is less compelling for temporary furniture or rooms likely to be redesigned soon.
What is the average cost of American-made furniture in 2026?
Quality American-made sofas commonly start around $2,400 to $4,000. Sectionals and sleeper sofas often run $4,000 to $10,000+. Solid wood beds often start near $2,200 to $3,500, and dining tables frequently run $2,000 to $6,000+ depending on size, wood species, finish, and customization.
Do I need a permit for built-in furniture or wall-mounted cabinets?
Freestanding furniture usually does not need a permit. Built-ins may require permits or licensed trades if they modify electrical, affect HVAC, attach permanently to structure, change egress, or are part of a larger permitted remodel. Check local requirements before building wall-to-wall units, benches, or media walls.
Do dressers and wardrobes need to be anchored to the wall?
Yes, tall or heavy clothing storage units should be anchored, especially in bedrooms and nurseries. Look for current stability compliance, use the manufacturer’s anti-tip hardware, and fasten into studs or proper blocking whenever possible.
Which is better for furniture: solid wood, veneer, plywood, MDF, or particleboard?
Solid wood is durable and repairable but moves with humidity. Veneer over quality plywood can be excellent for large panels. MDF is stable and smooth but less tolerant of moisture and impact. Particleboard is usually the lowest-cost option and is best reserved for low-stress uses.
