Why Your Washing Machine Smells: 6 Causes Homeowners Should Check First

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A washing machine that smells bad is usually not failing. In most homes, the odor comes from trapped moisture, detergent residue, stagnant water, a clogged filter, or a laundry drain problem. The right fix depends on the type of smell.

Here is the quick read: a musty or mildew smell usually points to moisture and residue inside the washer. A sour smell often means old water, too much detergent, or a clogged filter. A sewage or rotten-egg smell should be treated as a plumbing issue until proven otherwise. A burning or electrical smell is different: stop using the washer and call for service.

On our remodeling and repair job sites, we see this problem most often in laundry closets, stacked washer-dryer setups, and small interior laundry rooms with poor drying air. The washer gets blamed, but the cause may be a damp wall cavity, a standpipe problem, or a room that never dries out between loads.

Use this guide as a 15-minute inspection path: check the door gasket, dispenser, drum, pump filter, drain hose, standpipe, rear wall and floor, then the room humidity. That order separates simple cleaning from appliance repair and plumbing work.

First, Identify the Smell Before You Start Cleaning

Odor type matters because bleach, vinegar, drain cleaning, and appliance repair solve different problems. Before taking anything apart, run the washer empty on a rinse/spin cycle and smell three areas: inside the drum, around the rubber gasket, and at the wall drain/standpipe behind the washer.

Smell Most likely source First action
Musty or mildew Moisture in the gasket, drum, dispenser, or laundry room Clean and dry the washer, then check ventilation
Sour or stale Detergent buildup, soil residue, stagnant water, clogged filter Clean dispenser, run washer-clean cycle, inspect pump filter
Sewage, drain gas, rotten eggs Dry or missing P-trap, blocked vent, bad standpipe setup, clogged drain Inspect laundry drain and call a plumber if it persists
Burning, hot plastic, electrical Motor, belt, wiring, pump, or control issue Stop use and schedule appliance service

Do not mix cleaners. Never combine bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaning products. If bleach is appropriate for a hard nonporous surface, ventilate the area and keep the mix no stronger than 1 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water. Mild detergent and water are often enough for plastic, glass, and metal surfaces if you dry them thoroughly afterward.

1. Trapped Moisture in the Door Gasket

Front-load washers are efficient, but their airtight door seals create a common odor problem. The rubber boot, also called the gasket, has folds that trap water, lint, pet hair, detergent film, and small clothing debris. Close the door after every load and that damp pocket becomes a perfect odor source.

Open the door and pull back the gasket folds with gloved fingers. Look for gray slime, black spotting, wet lint, hair, coins, or a sour smell concentrated in the rubber. Also check the lower part of the gasket, where water sits longest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to fix it

Wipe the gasket with a microfiber cloth and warm water with mild detergent. Use a nylon brush or old toothbrush for the folds. Dry the entire seal afterward, especially the bottom 6 inches. If your washer manufacturer recommends a specific gasket cleaner or washer-cleaning tablet, use that instead of improvising with harsh chemicals.

After laundry days, leave the washer door cracked open when it is safe for children and pets in the home. Leave the dispenser drawer slightly open too. That one habit prevents many repeat odors.

If the gasket is torn, permanently stained, loose, or holding mold in deep cracks, replacement may be the better repair. A front-loader door boot or gasket often costs about $60 to $200 or more for the part, depending on brand. Installed replacement commonly lands around $200 to $350 because the front panel or retaining rings may need to be removed.

2. Detergent, Softener, and Soil Buildup in the Drum or Dispenser

Too much detergent is one of the most common causes of a smelly washer. High-efficiency machines use less water, so excess soap does not rinse away cleanly. It leaves a film that holds body soil, lint, and bacteria. Fabric softener can make the problem worse because it leaves a waxy coating in the dispenser, drum, and internal passages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dispenser drawer can look clean from the front and still be coated underneath. Remove it if your model allows. Check the drawer, the softener insert, and the dispenser cavity above and behind the drawer.

  • Odor Eliminator- No More Smelly Washer. Descaler Will Freshen Your Laundry Machine Basket, Rubber Gasket, And Internal Parts So Your Clothes Will Come Out Clean And Smelling Fresh.

How to fix it

Wash removable dispenser parts in warm water with mild detergent. Scrub the cavity with a small brush, then wipe dry. Run the washer’s clean cycle monthly or about every 30 cycles using a manufacturer-approved cleaner and the hottest allowed setting. Washer-cleaning tablets commonly cost about $10 to $30 for a multi-pack. Basic DIY supplies such as white vinegar, baking soda, cloths, brush, gloves, and cleaner usually run about $5 to $25 if you already have some items on hand.

For prevention, use the detergent amount listed for your load size, water hardness, and soil level. Many normal loads need less detergent than the cap suggests. If you see heavy suds during a wash or smell soap after a rinse, cut back.

Avoid relying on fragrance beads or extra softener to cover odor. They add residue without solving the moisture or drainage problem underneath.

3. A Clogged Pump Filter or Slow Drain

Many front-load washers have a pump filter behind a small access panel near the floor. When that filter collects lint, coins, hair, pet fur, buttons, or small socks, water drains slowly and can sit in the machine. That stagnant water creates a sour smell that returns even after you clean the drum.

This is a high-value check before calling for repair. On job sites, we often ask homeowners whether the filter has ever been opened. Many have owned the washer for years and never cleaned it because the panel is low, hidden, or blocked by a pedestal.

How to fix it

Unplug the washer before opening the filter access. Place towels and a shallow pan under the filter area. If your model has a small drain tube, drain that first. Then slowly loosen the filter cap. Expect water. Remove debris, rinse the filter, wipe the housing, and reinstall it firmly.

If the filter is damaged, check the appliance parts diagram for your exact model. Most pump filters are cleaned rather than replaced unless cracked or stripped. If the washer still drains slowly, makes a grinding pump noise, or leaves water in the drum, the drain pump may be failing or the drain hose may be restricted.

A typical appliance diagnostic visit is about $70 to $120, sometimes credited toward the repair. Odor-related appliance repairs vary, but drain pump replacement often runs about $180 to $350 installed. National washer repair averages in 2026 commonly fall around $180 to $250, with many typical repairs landing in the $150 to $400 range depending on brand, access, and parts.

4. A Dirty, Kinked, or Poorly Positioned Drain Hose

The drain hose carries dirty water from the washer to the standpipe or laundry sink. If the hose is kinked behind the machine, clogged with lint, pushed too far into the standpipe, or routed incorrectly, water may drain poorly or siphon back. That can leave stale water and odor inside the appliance.

Pull the washer forward carefully enough to inspect the hose. Do not yank it. Look for crushed sections, sharp bends, wet spots, loose clamps, or a hose shoved deep into the wall pipe. A drain hose should discharge into the standpipe with an air break at the opening. Sealing the standpipe or jamming the hose too far down can interfere with proper drainage behavior.

How to fix it

Straighten minor kinks and make sure the hose is supported at the correct height for your washer model. If the hose is brittle, cracked, packed with residue, or too short to route cleanly, replace it. A drain hose usually costs about $10 to $40 retail. An inlet and drain hose set often costs about $20 to $60. Installed drain hose replacement commonly runs about $100 to $180 when handled by an appliance technician.

If the standpipe overflows during discharge, that is no longer just a washer smell. It points to a clogged drain line, undersized drainage, improper venting, or a standpipe configuration problem. That is plumber territory.

5. Sewer Gas From the Standpipe, P-Trap, or Vent

A sewage or rotten-egg odor is the smell homeowners should not dismiss as normal washer mildew. Laundry drains need a trap that holds water to block sewer gas. If the P-trap is dry, missing, siphoned empty, improperly vented, or connected incorrectly, gas can enter the laundry area through the standpipe.

Modern laundry standpipes are not just random pipes in the wall. Plumbing codes generally require the clothes washer waste connection to discharge through an air break into a standpipe or receptor. Common code guidance for a clothes washer standpipe includes a minimum 2-inch drain and a standpipe height commonly in the 18- to 42-inch range above the trap weir, though local code and adopted editions control the final requirement. The trap must be properly vented and accessible through a compliant installation.

In practical homeowner terms: if the washer drain smells like sewer gas, the machine may be innocent. The wall drain may be dry, blocked, poorly vented, or installed wrong from a previous remodel.

What you can check safely

Run water through the washer or pour water into a rarely used standpipe to refill a dry trap. Confirm the drain hose is not sealed airtight into the standpipe. Look for gurgling, slow draining, overflow, or odor that is strongest at the wall opening. If the smell returns after the trap has water, call a licensed plumber.

Do not pour aggressive drain chemicals into a laundry standpipe without understanding the piping, trap, and blockage. If the line backs up, those chemicals can return during a washer discharge and create a safety hazard.

When this becomes a construction issue

We see laundry plumbing problems during basement finishes, garage conversions, and closet laundry additions. A washer may have been added where the drain, vent, pan, and service clearances were never properly planned. If walls or floors need to be opened, or if the washer is being relocated, expect permit and licensed plumbing requirements in many jurisdictions. Local rules vary, but moving supply lines, adding a drain, changing venting, or altering concealed plumbing is usually not the same as replacing a hose.

6. Hidden Moisture Around the Laundry Room

Sometimes the washer smells because the room around it is damp. A slow supply leak, cracked drain connection, missing washer pan, poor ventilation, wet drywall, swollen baseboard, or damp flooring can produce a musty smell that seems to come from the appliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look behind and below the washer with a flashlight. Check the wall, baseboard, flooring seams, shutoff box, hose connections, and drain area. If the washer sits in a closet, inspect the side walls and door track too. Water often travels under flooring before it becomes obvious.

EPA mold guidance comes down to one construction principle: control the moisture and clean or remove mold-contaminated material. Hard nonporous surfaces such as plastic and metal can often be cleaned and dried. Porous materials such as wet drywall, swollen MDF baseboard, carpet pad, and some damaged subfloors may need removal if they stay wet or show mold growth.

Better laundry-room design prevents repeat odor

A good laundry area should be serviceable, not just attractive. We like to see accessible shutoffs, enough clearance to inspect hoses and filters, a properly sized and vented drain, moisture-resistant flooring, durable baseboards, a washer pan where appropriate, and ventilation that lets the room dry after several loads. In tight laundry closets, even a small louvered door, transfer grille, or improved exhaust strategy can make a noticeable difference.

If you are remodeling a laundry room, plan for access. A stacked unit packed tight between walls may look clean on day one, but it becomes expensive when a hose, pump filter, drain connection, or shutoff valve needs service. Leave manufacturer-required clearances and a realistic way to pull the unit forward without tearing up trim.

What It Costs to Fix a Smelly Washing Machine in 2026

Most odor fixes are inexpensive if the cause is residue or trapped moisture. Costs climb when the problem is a pump, door seal, drain hose, plumbing line, or hidden water damage.

Fix Typical 2026 cost Best for
DIY cleaning supplies $5-$25 Gasket, drum, dispenser, mild odor
Washer cleaner tablets $10-$30 multi-pack Monthly clean-washer cycle
Drain hose part $10-$40 retail Cracked, dirty, or kink-prone hose
Drain hose installed $100-$180 Appliance access or routing issue
Door boot/gasket part $60-$200+ Torn or contaminated front-load seal
Door seal replacement installed $200-$350 Damaged gasket or persistent gasket odor
Drain pump replacement $180-$350 Slow drain, standing water, pump noise
Appliance diagnostic visit $70-$120 Unclear appliance failure
Typical washer repair range $150-$400 Most appliance-only repairs

Plumbing costs vary more because access drives the price. A simple trap or drain cleaning visit is very different from opening a wall, correcting venting, replacing damaged finishes, or bringing a laundry area up to current local code during a remodel.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when

You can usually handle the first round yourself if the smell is musty or sour, the washer drains normally, there is no visible water damage, and you are only cleaning accessible parts. Wiping the gasket, washing the dispenser, running a clean cycle, cleaning the pump filter, and replacing an easy-access hose are normal homeowner maintenance tasks.

Set aside 45 to 90 minutes for a thorough first cleaning. After that, monthly maintenance usually takes 10 to 20 minutes plus the washer’s clean cycle time.

Call an appliance technician when

Bring in appliance service if the washer leaves water in the drum, will not drain, shows an error code, makes grinding pump noise, has a torn gasket, leaks from the machine body, or produces burning/electrical odors. Stop using the washer if you smell burning plastic, hot wiring, or electrical heat.

Call a plumber or remodeler when

Call a plumber if the odor smells like sewer gas, the standpipe overflows, the drain gurgles, the trap dries out repeatedly, or the laundry plumbing was added during an old remodel and looks questionable. Call a remodeler or restoration-minded contractor if the wall, flooring, trim, or subfloor is damp, swollen, stained, or moldy. Appliance cleaning will not fix wet building materials.

For laundry-room changes, ask your local building department or licensed plumber about permits before moving washer supply lines, adding a standpipe, changing venting, opening walls, or relocating the laundry area. Permit triggers vary by city and state, but concealed plumbing changes are commonly regulated.

A Simple Monthly Maintenance Routine

Once the odor is gone, prevention is straightforward. At the end of laundry day, wipe the gasket and door glass dry. Leave the door and dispenser cracked open when household safety allows. Remove wet clothes promptly, ideally within an hour. Use less detergent, especially in high-efficiency washers, and avoid heavy softener use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once a month, or about every 30 cycles, remove and wash the dispenser drawer, clean the pump filter if your model has an accessible one, and run the clean-washer cycle with the recommended cleaner. Check behind the washer twice a year for hose wear, damp flooring, and dust buildup around the drain area.

If the smell returns within a few days after a proper cleaning, do not keep adding stronger cleaners. Move down the system: filter, drain hose, standpipe, trap, venting, then room moisture. That sequence saves money and prevents you from missing the building problem behind the appliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my washing machine smell even after I clean it?

You may have cleaned the drum but missed the gasket folds, dispenser cavity, pump filter, drain hose, or standpipe. Persistent odor can also mean stagnant water, a clogged drain pump, sewer gas from the laundry drain, or hidden moisture behind the washer.

Why does my washing machine smell like sewer gas?

A sewer or rotten-egg smell usually points to the drain system, not detergent residue. Common causes include a dry P-trap, missing or incorrect trap, blocked vent, clogged standpipe drain, or a drain hose installed without a proper air break.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often should I clean my washing machine?

A practical schedule is monthly or about every 30 cycles. Wipe the gasket and door glass, wash the dispenser drawer, clean the pump filter if accessible, and run the manufacturer’s clean-washer cycle.

Is vinegar or bleach better for a smelly washer?

Use the cleaner recommended by your washer manufacturer first. Mild detergent and water work well on many nonporous surfaces. Bleach should be used carefully, with ventilation, and never mixed with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners.

Where is the washing machine filter and can it cause odors?

Many front-load washers have a pump filter behind a small lower access panel. If it traps lint, coins, hair, or small clothing items, water can drain slowly and smell sour. Check your model manual before opening it because water may spill.

When should I call a plumber instead of an appliance technician?

Call a plumber when the smell is sewer-like, the standpipe overflows, the drain gurgles, the trap will not hold water, or the laundry plumbing may be incorrectly vented. Call an appliance technician for pump, gasket, error-code, leak, or electrical issues.
