In 2026, most of these washers are high-efficiency impeller models in the 4.5 to 5.5 cubic foot range, with mainstream sale pricing commonly around $599 to $1,200 and premium smart or specialty-finish models often landing between $900 and $1,500 or more.
The short answer: choose a 4.5 to 4.8 cubic foot impeller washer for small households, a 5.0 cubic foot model for most families, and a 5.2 to 5.5 cubic foot model if you regularly wash king bedding, towels, sports gear, or large mixed loads. But do not stop at the appliance tag. On our job sites, the washer that performs best is the one matched to the laundry room: drain, shutoffs, GFCI/AFCI protection, floor level, delivery clearances, and leak control all matter.
This guide covers the best categories to shop, what features are worth paying for, what installation conditions to verify, and when a washer replacement becomes a plumbing, electrical, or remodeling project.
What Is a Top-Load Washer Without an Agitator?
A traditional agitator washer has a tall center post that twists through the load. A no-agitator top loader uses an impeller, which is a low-profile disc or cone at the bottom of the basket. Instead of a post grabbing clothes, the impeller moves water and fabric so clothes rub against each other.

- The Supplying Demand Washing Machine Impeller and Connect Sleeve ensures a seamless connection for optimal washing performance.
- Designed to fit a variety of washing machines, this impeller and sleeve set enhances the machines efficiency and longevity when replacing part numbers AP7244296 and PS18227554.
- The connect sleeve and impeller together provide a reliable connection, reducing wear and tear on your washing machine.
- Easily replace your washing machines impeller and sleeve with this set, designed for straightforward installation and compatibility.
- Enhance your washing machines functionality with this high-quality impeller and connect sleeve, ensuring smooth and effective operation.
That design gives you three practical differences:
- More usable basket space: Without the center post, bulky items like comforters and towels fit more easily.
- Gentler fabric action: The wash action is usually less aggressive than an agitator, which can help reduce wear on shirts, sheets, and delicates.
- Lower water use: High-efficiency impeller washers generally use less water than older-style agitator machines, though front loaders still tend to be the efficiency leader.
ENERGY STAR notes that top-load impeller washers became popular because they are more water- and energy-efficient than traditional agitator top loaders. The tradeoff is that front-load washers are still roughly 25% more water and energy efficient than top-load impeller models. If maximum efficiency is your only priority, compare front loaders. If easy loading, no front gasket, and a familiar top-load workflow matter more, an impeller top loader is a strong middle ground.
Best Top-Load Washer Without Agitator by Household Type
There is no single best washer for every house. The right choice depends on how much laundry you run, what you wash, who loads the machine, and what your laundry room can physically support.
Best Value: 4.5 to 5.0 Cubic Foot Impeller Washer
For most homeowners, the best value sits in the 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot range. These machines are large enough for sheets, towels, jeans, school clothes, and moderate bedding without pushing into oversized appliance dimensions or premium pricing.
Representative 2026 pricing puts a Samsung 4.5 cubic foot high-efficiency impeller model around a $599 sale price, with many 5.0 cubic foot models from major brands around $749 to $900 on sale. Expect more if you choose smart controls, specialty colors, automatic detergent dispensers, or matching pedestal-style storage accessories.
Choose this category if you have one to four people in the home, run laundry several times a week, and want a practical machine without paying for capacity you rarely use.
Best Large-Family Pick: 5.2 to 5.5 Cubic Foot Impeller Washer
Large families, short-term rental owners, and households with frequent bedding loads should look at 5.2 to 5.5 cubic feet. This range gives you better room for king sheets, blankets, bath towels, kids’ bedding, and large weekend loads.
In 2026, 5.2 cubic foot smart impeller models are commonly seen around $749 to $1,000 on sale, while 5.4 to 5.5 cubic foot premium models often run about $899 to $1,500 depending on finish and feature package.
Before buying the largest machine on the floor, measure reach depth. Some high-capacity top loaders have deep tubs. If a shorter person cannot comfortably reach the bottom, that large capacity becomes a daily annoyance.
Best for Shorter Users: Moderate Capacity With a Shallower Tub
A 5.5 cubic foot washer looks good on paper, but tub depth matters. We have seen homeowners choose the largest basket available and then struggle to retrieve socks, small towels, and wet shirts from the bottom.
If reach is a concern, shop in person when possible. Open the lid, stand flat-footed, and touch the bottom of the basket. A 4.5 to 5.0 cubic foot model may be more comfortable than a deeper 5.3 cubic foot unit. Also check lid swing height if the washer sits under shelving or cabinets.
Best Simple-Control Model: Fewer Cycles, Clear Manual Options
Smart washers can be useful, but laundry rooms should not require an app for basic work. For long-term satisfaction, prioritize clear cycle labels, physical or responsive controls, a deep-fill option, bulky/bedding cycle, rinse control, spin-speed control, and a way to pause or unlock the lid.

- Tough Action for Tough Stains: Our top load clothes washer features a Triple Action Impeller to tackle your toughest loads in three powerful ways: Spraying Action to attack dirt from every angle with a concentrated detergent mix, Wash Basket Action to move the wash basket back and forth, and Impeller Action to move clothes in a circular pattern
- More Laundry, Less Time: Our high-efficiency top load washer features Express Wash to clean small loads in just 30 minutes (based on a 3-lb load, default cycle setting), and Accela Wash to clean full-size loads up to 51% faster (compared to a standard 8-lb load, normal cycle, warm wash temp, extra heavy soil setting) - so you spend less time doing laundry
- Wash Your Way: Features 10 wash cycles to custom wash your loads including Heavy Duty, Whites, Towels, Delicates, and Express Cycles. Select from 4 temperature options and rinse with Extra Rinse to help protect sensitive skin. Soft Close lid has tempered glass and won’t slam shut
- Easy to Operate: Use the intuitive light-touch controls to select the load and cycle options that match the fabric types in each load. Plus, the convenient LED lights provide time remaining and cycle status information
- Reduce and Save: Energy savings includes Cold Clean which cleans gently & completely while using up to 90% less energy (when compared to the normal cycle, default settings, 8-lb load)
This is especially important in rental properties, guest suites, multigenerational homes, and utility rooms where several people use the same machine. A simple control layout reduces user error and service calls.
Best Remodel Pick: ENERGY STAR, Stainless Tub, High Spin, and Known Service Support
If you are remodeling a laundry room, do not treat the washer as a disposable add-on. Choose a model with ENERGY STAR certification, a stainless-steel tub, at least 4.8 cubic feet of capacity, a high spin speed, load sensing, deep-fill or extra-water options, and a service network in your area.
During a remodel, you can also fix the conditions that make washers fail early: poor leveling, weak shutoff valves, old supply hoses, marginal drains, trapped dryer vents, and flooring that cannot tolerate leaks.
Comparison Table: Which No-Agitator Top Loader Fits Your Home?
| Household Need | Recommended Capacity | Typical 2026 Washer Price | Best Features to Prioritize | Watch-Outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apartment, condo, or 1-2 people | 4.5-4.8 cu. ft. | $599-$850 | ENERGY STAR, simple controls, quiet spin, compact installed depth | Confirm closet depth, door swing, and drain access |
| Average family | 4.8-5.0 cu. ft. | $700-$1,000 | Stainless tub, bulky cycle, deep fill, high spin speed | Do not overload; impeller machines need room for clothes to roll |
| Large family or frequent bedding | 5.2-5.5 cu. ft. | $899-$1,500+ | Large basket, bedding cycle, strong spin, service support | Deep tubs can be hard to reach; verify floor and delivery path |
| Second-floor laundry | 4.8-5.2 cu. ft. | $750-$1,300 plus leak protection | Low vibration, drain pan, leak sensor, automatic shutoff | Floor stiffness and water containment matter more upstairs |
| Laundry-room remodel | 5.0+ cu. ft. | $800-$1,500+ plus construction work | ENERGY STAR, durable tub, accessible shutoffs, proper clearances | Moving hookups can trigger plumbing, electrical, drywall, flooring, and permits |
Features Worth Paying For
Most no-agitator top loaders advertise long feature lists. Some matter. Some mainly help the showroom tag look expensive.
ENERGY STAR Certification
Start here. An ENERGY STAR washer helps reduce water and energy use over the life of the machine. Operating cost depends on local water, sewer, electric, and gas rates, but efficient washers also help reduce dryer time when they spin water out effectively.

Stainless-Steel Tub
A stainless tub is a durability feature we like. It resists rust, handles high spin speeds well, and avoids the chipping concerns of older coated tubs. For a machine expected to run 8 to 12 years, this is worth having.
Deep-Fill and Bulky/Bedding Cycles
High-efficiency washers use less water by design. That works for normal laundry, but towels, blankets, pet bedding, and bulky loads sometimes need more water movement. A deep-fill option and dedicated bedding cycle give you flexibility without forcing every load to run like an old water-heavy washer.
High Spin Speed
A strong final spin removes more water before clothes hit the dryer. That matters because dryer operation often costs more than the wash cycle. Less moisture means shorter dry times, less heat exposure, and less wear on fabrics.
Load Sensing With Manual Override
Load sensing is useful, but homeowners still need control. Look for models that let you add rinse, increase water level, select soil level, or adjust spin. The best machine is efficient most of the time and flexible when the load calls for it.

What These Washers Do Well and Where They Struggle
No-agitator top loaders are best for large mixed loads, towels, sheets, blankets, casual clothing, and households that want easier loading than a front loader. They are also appealing to homeowners who dislike front-loader gasket maintenance or bending down to unload.

They are less ideal for heavily soiled workwear, farm clothes, greasy shop rags, or mud-heavy uniforms. An impeller washer can clean these loads, but you may need smaller loads, pretreatment, longer heavy-duty cycles, warm water, extra rinse, and proper HE detergent. A traditional agitator or commercial-style washer can still provide more aggressive mechanical action.
The biggest user mistake is overloading. With an impeller, clothes need room to move. If the basket is packed tight, the machine may struggle to turn the load over, detergent may not rinse cleanly, and spin balance may suffer. Load around the basket in loose piles, keep items below the top row of holes where possible, and avoid wrapping sheets around the outside like a rope.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBefore You Buy: The Contractor’s Laundry Room Checklist
Most appliance guides stop at capacity and features. In the field, we see a different pattern: the washer is fine, but the room was not ready. Check these items before ordering, especially if your laundry area is older than 15 years.
Measure the Installed Depth, Not Just Width
Most full-size washers are about 27 inches wide, but installed depth is the dimension that causes trouble. Hoses, drain connections, shutoff boxes, dryer venting, and trim can add several inches behind the machine. A washer listed around 28 to 30 inches deep may need 32 to 36 inches of real-world depth to sit correctly without crushing hoses.
Measure the width, depth, lid-open height, hallway width, door width, stair turns, and landing space. Photograph the existing hookups before ordering. Delivery crews can refuse installation if shutoffs are frozen, the drain is questionable, the cord cannot reach safely, or the path is too tight.
Confirm the Drain and Standpipe
A washing machine discharges water quickly. Old laundry areas sometimes have undersized or poorly vented drains, especially where a previous owner improvised a setup. Modern plumbing codes commonly call for a 2-inch standpipe receptor for clothes washers, with proper trap and venting. The standpipe also needs adequate height and secure hose placement so it does not overflow or siphon.
If you see a cracked box, loose standpipe, taped hose, old galvanized piping, sewer odor, slow draining, or previous overflow staining, have a plumber inspect it before the new washer arrives.
Test the Shutoff Valves
Washer shutoffs should turn easily and stop water completely. If they are corroded, stiff, leaking, or buried behind the machine, replace them before installation. We prefer accessible quarter-turn valves in a proper laundry box. New braided stainless supply hoses are inexpensive compared with water damage.
Check Electrical Protection
Laundry areas typically need a properly grounded 120-volt receptacle, and modern code requirements often involve GFCI protection and, depending on circuit and local adoption, AFCI protection. Some homes have GFCI protection at the receptacle, some at the breaker, and some older homes have neither.
If the outlet is loose, ungrounded, shared with unrelated loads, located where it will be inaccessible, or missing required protection, bring in a licensed electrician. Adding or correcting a 120-volt receptacle or GFCI outlet commonly runs about $150 to $350, depending on access, panel distance, breaker requirements, and local labor.

Top-load washers spin hard. If the floor is out of level, bouncy, water-damaged, or weak, vibration complaints usually follow. On concrete slabs, leveling is usually straightforward. On framed floors, especially second floors, stiffness matters. Large-capacity machines can weigh roughly 130 to 170 pounds empty, then add water, clothes, and spin force.

If you already have good hookups, installation is usually simple. If you are adding or moving laundry, costs climb fast because several trades may be involved.
| Project Scope | Typical 2026 Cost | What Is Usually Included |
|---|---|---|
| Washer purchase | $599-$1,200 mainstream; $900-$1,500+ premium | Full-size HE impeller top loader, depending on capacity, finish, and features |
| Basic installation with existing hookups | $100-$350 labor-only | Set in place, connect hoses, connect drain, level machine, test cycle |
| Average washer/dryer installation | About $184, commonly $129-$263 | Typical national labor range where hookups are ready |
| New washer/dryer hookups | $650-$2,500 | Water, drain, electrical, box installation, patching depending on access |
| Move laundry location | $650-$2,000+ for hookups; more with finishes | Plumbing and electrical relocation, plus drywall, flooring, cabinetry, and venting as needed |
| Add or correct GFCI/electrical outlet | $150-$350 | Outlet, breaker, circuit correction, or protection upgrade depending on conditions |
| Full laundry-room addition or major remodel | $8,000-$30,000+ | Framing, plumbing, electrical, dryer venting, flooring, cabinetry, finishes, permits |
The main cost drivers are distance to water and drain lines, slab versus crawlspace or basement access, first-floor versus second-floor location, permit requirements, old galvanized or cast-iron plumbing, electrical panel capacity, flooring repair, cabinetry changes, haul-away, stairs, and delivery access.
Second-Floor Laundry Needs Extra Protection
A second-floor laundry room is convenient, but water damage risk is higher. Even where a drain pan is not strictly required by local base code, we treat it as best practice upstairs.
For second-floor laundry, we recommend a washer pan, a leak sensor, automatic shutoff valves, water-resistant flooring, accessible shutoffs, and a drain route that actually discharges safely. A pan without a real drain or alarm is only partial protection. It may catch a small drip, but it will not save the ceiling below from a major hose failure.
Vibration also matters more upstairs. Choose a machine known for stable spin performance, keep loads balanced, and make sure the washer is level on all four feet. If the floor flexes noticeably when someone walks through the room, have the structure evaluated before installing a large-capacity washer.
When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
A homeowner can often handle a basic washer swap if the hookups are modern, accessible, and in good condition. That means working shutoff valves, a proper grounded outlet, a sound drain, level flooring, and a delivery path that does not require removing doors, railings, or trim.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
DIY is reasonable when you are replacing a similar-size washer in the same location, using new supply hoses, connecting to an existing standpipe, leveling the machine, and running a supervised test cycle. Plan on 1 to 2 hours if the old machine is already removed and the space is clean.
Hire a pro when valves are frozen, the drain backs up, the outlet is ungrounded or unprotected, the washer is moving upstairs, the floor is damaged, the installation requires a new laundry box, or you are relocating hookups. Moving or adding laundry often becomes a multi-trade project involving plumbing, electrical, drywall, flooring, dryer ventilation, and sometimes structural review. Permits may be required, especially when new water, drain, vent, or electrical work is added.
How to Test the Washer After Installation
Do not install the machine and walk away. Run a test cycle while someone is present. We watch the whole sequence: fill, wash movement, drain, spin, and final shutoff.
During the test, check both hose connections, the valve box, the drain hose, the standpipe, the floor under the machine, and the area below if it is a second-floor laundry. Listen for water hammer, banging, scraping, excessive vibration, or drain gurgling. Confirm the machine does not walk during spin and that the shutoffs remain accessible after the washer is in its final position.

Bottom Line: The Best Choice for Most Homes
For most homeowners, the best top-loading washing machine without an agitator is a 4.8 to 5.0 cubic foot ENERGY STAR impeller washer with a stainless tub, deep-fill option, bedding cycle, high spin speed, clear controls, and local service support. That size balances capacity, reach, cost, and installation practicality.
Move up to 5.2 to 5.5 cubic feet if you have a large family or wash bulky bedding every week. Stay closer to 4.5 to 4.8 cubic feet if reach, closet depth, or budget matters more than maximum capacity.
The appliance matters, but the room decides whether it works well. Before you buy, measure the installed depth, confirm the drain, test shutoffs, verify electrical protection, inspect the floor, and plan leak protection where damage risk is high. That is the difference between a smooth washer replacement and a preventable construction problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are top-load washers without agitators better than agitator washers?
They are better for many households because they offer more usable basket space, gentler fabric movement, and better water efficiency than traditional agitator machines. Agitator washers can still be better for very dirty workwear or loads that need aggressive mechanical washing.
What size impeller washer do I need for a family or king-size bedding?
Most families should shop around 4.8 to 5.0 cubic feet. For king bedding, large towel loads, or five-plus people in the home, 5.2 to 5.5 cubic feet is usually more comfortable. Shorter users should test reach depth before buying an extra-large model.
Do no-agitator top-load washers clean heavily soiled clothes well?
They can, but load size and cycle choice matter. Use HE detergent, pretreat stains, avoid packing the basket, and choose heavy-duty, deep-fill, or extra-rinse settings when needed. For daily mud, grease, or job-site clothing, an agitator or commercial-style washer may clean more aggressively.
Do impeller washing machines use less water?
Yes, high-efficiency impeller top loaders generally use less water than traditional agitator top loaders. Front-load washers still usually lead on water and energy efficiency, but impeller top loaders are a practical middle ground for many homeowners.
