21 IKEA Lighting Upgrades That Make a Room Look Custom

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IKEA lighting can absolutely transform a room, but the fixture is only half the story. The real difference comes from placement, scale, color temperature, glare control, and knowing when a plug-in update is enough versus when wiring, a rated electrical box, or a licensed electrician should be involved.

On our job sites, the rooms that feel best after dark almost always use three layers of light: ambient light for the whole space, task light where people read, cook, work, or get ready, and accent light to give depth to shelves, art, walls, or cabinetry. IKEA’s US lighting assortment is useful because it covers all three: table lamps, floor lamps, pendants, ceiling and wall fixtures, smart bulbs, smart lamps, LED strips, decorative lights, bathroom lighting, integrated cabinet lighting, lamp bases, shades, and cord sets.

For 2026 planning, a decor-only IKEA refresh can run about $10 to $250 per room if you are using plug-in lamps, shades, LED bulbs, cord kits, clamp lights, rechargeable accents, or smart bulbs. Once you move into hardwired fixtures, new switch legs, recessed lighting, or bathroom-rated installations, the fixture may still be inexpensive, but the finished cost depends on wiring access, ceiling height, electrical box condition, dimmer compatibility, drywall repair, paint touch-up, and permitting.

Start With the Three Lighting Layers

Before choosing a shade or finish, map the room by function. A living room may need soft ambient light, a reading lamp beside the sofa, and low LED light behind the media console. A kitchen needs bright task light at the counter before it needs decorative pendants. A bedroom needs warm dimmable light near the bed, not one cold ceiling fixture blasting the whole room.

21 IKEA Lighting Ideas That Change the Room

1. Replace a Builder-Grade Flush Mount

A basic dome light can make a room feel unfinished even when the furniture is good. Swapping it for an IKEA ceiling fixture, shade, or smart ceiling/wall lamp can immediately clean up the ceiling plane. Current IKEA US examples include the STOFTMOLN smart ceiling/wall lamp at $24.99 and the HEKTAR ceiling track with three spotlights at $49.99.

Check the existing electrical box before buying. A heavier fixture needs a box rated for its weight, properly secured to framing. If the old box is loose, plastic, unsupported, or buried behind patchwork drywall, budget for repair.

DIY or pro: Like-for-like replacement may be DIY for a competent homeowner where local rules allow it. Hire an electrician if wiring is old, the box moves, the switch needs changing, or the fixture location is moving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Hang an Oversized Paper Pendant Over the Dining Table

A large paper shade gives a dining room volume without a chandelier price. IKEA pendant shades such as paper or sculptural designs can create a soft glow that flatters food, faces, and wood tones. Current IKEA examples include ZEBRASAV pendant at $9.99 and IKEA PS 2026 pendant shade at $34.99.

For scale, start with a pendant diameter about one-half to two-thirds the width of the table. Over a 36-inch-wide table, a 20- to 24-inch shade usually looks balanced. Hang the bottom of the shade about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop, then adjust for sightlines.

DIY or pro: A plug-in cord kit can be DIY. A hardwired centered pendant should be installed by a pro, especially if the electrical box needs to move over the table.

3. Use a Bamboo or Rattan Pendant for Texture

Natural woven shades are useful when a room feels too flat: white walls, smooth cabinets, plain floors, and no texture overhead. IKEA’s SINNERLIG bamboo pendant, listed at $99.99 in current US examples, is the kind of fixture that adds shadow pattern and warmth without making the room dark if paired with the right bulb.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it in breakfast nooks, bedrooms, sunrooms, and casual dining spaces. Avoid placing an open woven shade where direct glare will hit seated eye level. A frosted LED bulb often works better than a clear bulb.

DIY or pro: Plug-in installations are usually DIY. Hardwired ceiling work is professional electrical work in many jurisdictions.

4. Put an Arched Floor Lamp Over the Sofa

A floor lamp can solve a room that has no ceiling light or a ceiling box in the wrong place. Arched lamps throw light over a coffee table or sectional without opening the ceiling. IKEA floor lamps commonly sit in the $50 to $150+ range, with current examples like OKENSAND at $89.99 and HEKTAR at $89.99.

Place the base where it will not become a trip point, usually behind the sofa arm or tucked beside a chair. The shade should land over the seating zone, not directly over someone’s head.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY or pro: DIY. Use cord channels or furniture placement to keep cords controlled.

5. Add a Smart LED Floor Lamp for Color Scenes

Smart floor lamps are practical in rooms that serve multiple purposes. A family room may need bright light for cleanup, warmer light for evening, and colored accent light for movie night. IKEA’s PILSKOTT smart LED floor lamp is a current US example at $149.99.

Decide before buying whether you want simple remote control or app-based automations. IKEA smart lamps can be controlled by remote, while full IKEA Home smart app functions require additional equipment such as the DIRIGERA hub.

DIY or pro: DIY. The planning issue is compatibility, not wiring.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Use Plug-In Bedside Pendants

Plug-in pendants clear nightstands and give a bedroom a built-in look without cutting drywall. Mount the cord neatly, hang the shade 18 to 24 inches above the nightstand surface, and use warm dimmable LEDs around 2700K.

This is especially useful in rentals, guest rooms, and older homes where there is no wall sconce wiring. Choose opaque or diffused shades if the bulb will be visible from the bed.

DIY or pro: Plug-in is DIY. Hardwired bedside pendants should be installed before drywall in a remodel, or by an electrician with careful patch planning in a finished room.

7. Clip Clamp Task Lights Onto Shelves

A clamp light can turn a dead shelf, craft table, dorm desk, or reading corner into a usable zone. The advantage is adjustability: you can aim the beam exactly where the task happens.

Under Cabinet Lighting Wireless, 10inch Motion Sensor Light Indoor, 3Pack
  • Motion Sensor Light Indoor: When the motion activated under cabinet light detects human movement within the range of 10ft/120°, it will automatically light up and turn off about 20S after no movement is detected. Moreover, cabinet lights are set to two sensing modes for day and night, allowing you to select for different usage scenarios.
  • 3 Color Temps & Dimmable: The LED under cabinet light provides 3 lighting color temperature options, including white light, warm light, and natural light, and is designed with a 50%-100% brightness stepless adjustment function. A variety of adjustable lighting modes enable the motion sensor light to be better applied in more occasions.
  • Rechargeable & Power Display: Equipped with a 1800mAh rechargeable built-in battery (non-detachable), battery operated lights can work for 8-10 hours in always-on mode and last 8-50 days in motion sensing mode. In addition, improved the power display function of the kitchen light, so you can know the product's battery level through four power indicator lights.
  • Magnetic & Easy Installation: Built in strong magnets, closet lights can be attached directly to metal surfaces or can be mounted anywhere by using the included adhesive metal plates. Therefore, when closet light needs to be recharged, it's easy to remove and reinstall, to conveniently illuminate every corner of the home at any time.
  • Wide Usage & Package List: With upgraded functions and lightweight design, the sensor light can be well applied in scenarios that require lighting, such as kitchen, cabinet, closet, bedside, stairs, shelf, etc. The kit includes 3* under cabinet lights (10inch), 6* adhesive metal plates, 1* type-C 3in1 charging cable, 1* instruction manual and 1* packing box.

Use clamp lights where the structure is sturdy enough to hold them without damaging veneer or thin shelving. In a bookcase, clamp the light high and aim it down across the work surface or reading chair.

DIY or pro: DIY. Keep cords out of pinch points and away from hot appliances.

8. Install Picture or Bookcase Lighting

Lighting a bookcase makes inexpensive shelving look more intentional. The same principle works for art, open kitchen shelves, bar cabinets, and built-ins. Light from above or slightly forward so the beam washes the vertical surface instead of shining into the room.

On remodels, we plan power and switch locations before cabinetry is installed. It is much cleaner to hide drivers, low-voltage wires, and outlets during rough-in than after shelves are full and painted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY or pro: Battery or plug-in picture lights are DIY. Integrated hardwired cabinet lighting should be planned with an electrician and carpenter.

9. Put LED Strips Behind the Media Console

LED strips behind a TV console reduce the harsh contrast between a bright screen and a dark wall. They also make an inexpensive media wall feel deeper. Keep the strip hidden so the viewer sees glow, not dots.

Use warm white for a calmer living room, or smart color strips if the room doubles as a game or movie space. Avoid placing strips where adhesive will fail from dust, heat, or rough unfinished wood.

DIY or pro: DIY for plug-in strips. Use a proper outlet location rather than running cords across traffic paths.

10. Prioritize Under-Cabinet Kitchen Task Lighting

If the kitchen feels gloomy, under-cabinet lighting usually beats decorative pendants as the first upgrade. Ceiling lights put your body between the light and the counter, creating shadows right where you chop, read labels, and clean.

Aim for continuous light across the main prep runs: sink, range-adjacent counter, coffee zone, and landing areas. Place strips or bars toward the front of the wall cabinet underside so light reaches the counter face instead of only washing the backsplash.

DIY or pro: Plug-in under-cabinet lights can be DIY. Hardwired systems, new switches, and concealed drivers should be handled by a pro, often with permits depending on local rules.

11. Add Wardrobe and Closet Lighting

Lighting inside wardrobes makes flat-pack storage feel custom. It also helps homeowners actually see navy, black, and gray clothing in the morning. Integrated lights work best when planned before assembly, because power supply access and wire paths matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For closets, use LED sources that stay cool and are listed for the location. Do not improvise with old incandescent fixtures near clothing or shelves.

DIY or pro: Battery and plug-in wardrobe lights are DIY. Hardwired closet fixtures must meet code clearances and fixture type rules.

Great under counter lights for kitchen, clooset, cupboard, pantry, basement, stairs, hallway, bookshelf, etc

12. Upgrade Bathroom Mirror Lighting

Bathroom lighting has to do two jobs: make the room feel clean and light the face evenly. A single ceiling light behind you casts shadows under the eyes and chin. IKEA bathroom options include fixtures and mirrors with built-in lighting, with current examples such as KABOMBA bathroom LED ceiling lamp at $89.99 and FAXALVEN mirror with built-in lighting at $341.99.

For grooming, vertical light at both sides of the mirror is ideal. If using an illuminated mirror, check the lumen output, color temperature, and installation requirements before ordering.

DIY or pro: Hire a pro for hardwired bathroom lighting. Damp and wet ratings matter, and shower, vanity, covered outdoor, and open outdoor locations are not interchangeable.

13. Layer Table Lamps Instead of Relying on One Ceiling Light

Two or three table lamps can make a living room feel finished for far less than a ceiling redesign. Place lamps at different corners of the room so light comes from multiple directions. Current IKEA examples include the FADO table lamp at $29.99.

Use matching color temperatures even if the lamp styles differ. Mixing 2700K warm bulbs with 5000K cool bulbs in one room makes the space feel patched together.

DIY or pro: DIY. Add smart plugs or smart bulbs if wall switching is inconvenient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

14. Treat a Sculptural Glass Lamp Like Art

A sculptural lamp can do the work of both lighting and decor. IKEA’s VARMBLIXT LED table/wall lamp, listed at $99.99 in current US examples, is a good example of a fixture that reads as an object even when turned off.

Use this approach in an entry, hallway console, bedroom dresser, or low bookcase. Keep surrounding decor simple so the lamp has room to register.

DIY or pro: Tabletop use is DIY. Wall mounting should follow the manufacturer’s anchor and electrical instructions.

15. Use Track Lighting for Flexible Zones

Track lighting is practical in rooms where one ceiling box needs to serve multiple zones: a small kitchen, studio apartment, hallway gallery, home office, or basement room. IKEA’s HEKTAR three-spot ceiling track is a current US example at $49.99.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aim each head deliberately. One can wash a wall, one can hit a desk, and one can brighten a walking path. Do not point all three straight down unless you want a harsh pool of light.

DIY or pro: Replacement at an existing ceiling box may be straightforward for a qualified installer. New locations, dimmers, and old wiring call for an electrician.

16. Use Paper Lanterns for Soft Diffusion

Paper lanterns are one of the least expensive ways to make overhead light less harsh. They work well in kids’ rooms, guest rooms, apartments, and casual dens because the shade spreads light broadly.

The trick is bulb choice. Use an LED bulb that stays cool, fits the shade, and does not show as a bright hot spot. Warm white is usually best for bedrooms and living areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY or pro: Plug-in cord sets are DIY. Hardwired versions follow the same electrical rules as any ceiling fixture.

17. Add Battery or Rechargeable Accent Lights

Small rechargeable accent lights are useful where wiring would be silly: a bar tray, deep shelf, rental entry, powder room niche, or holiday table. They create evening atmosphere without a permanent decision.

Look for stable bases, easy charging access, and a warm LED. In high-use areas, plug-in or hardwired lighting is still better because nobody wants to manage charging every few days.

DIY or pro: DIY.

18. Put Smart Bulbs in Existing Fixtures

If the fixture is fine but the room feels wrong, start with the bulb. Smart bulbs can add dimming, scheduling, color temperature changes, and remote control without replacing the fixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is a strong rental upgrade and a good test before spending money on hardwired changes. Confirm bulb base, maximum wattage equivalent, fixture enclosure limits, and whether the wall switch needs to remain on for smart control.

DIY or pro: DIY. Smart switches and new dimmers are electrical work.

19. Build a Warm Dimming Bedroom Setup

A bedroom should support reading, dressing, and winding down. Use a soft overhead or pendant, bedside lamps or sconces, and a low accent source near a dresser or chair. Keep most bulbs at 2700K to 3000K and make at least the bedside lights dimmable.

Avoid making one bright cool ceiling light the only source. It may help when cleaning, but it makes the room feel flat the rest of the time.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIY or pro: Lamps and smart bulbs are DIY. Hardwired sconces, new three-way switching, and ceiling fixture moves should be handled by a pro.

20. Use Outdoor or Balcony Lanterns Only Where Rated

IKEA-style lanterns and decorative lights can make a balcony, porch, or covered patio feel like another room. The safety issue is rating. Damp-rated, wet-rated, indoor-only, covered outdoor, and exposed outdoor fixtures are different categories.

For any location exposed to humidity, wind-driven rain, or spray, use the correct listed fixture and outdoor-rated cord or receptacle protection. Do not run indoor extension cords outside.

DIY or pro: Portable rated lights are DIY. New exterior boxes, switches, or sconces should be installed by an electrician.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

21. Mix Heights in an Open-Plan Room

Open-plan rooms fail when every light is at the same height. Use a pendant over the dining table, floor lamps near seating, under-cabinet lighting in the kitchen, and low accent light on shelves or media furniture. Repeat one finish or shade material so the zones relate, but vary height and beam direction.

This is how an inexpensive lighting package starts to feel designed. The room gets depth, the dining table has a center, the sofa area feels softer, and the kitchen still functions.

DIY or pro: Plug-in layers are DIY. Coordinate hardwired pendants, island lighting, and switches during rough electrical work if remodeling.

What IKEA Lighting Costs in 2026

IKEA’s advantage is that the visible fixture can be inexpensive. Current US examples found during research include pendant shades and fixtures from about $9.99 to $189.99, table lamps around $29.99 to $99.99, floor lamps around $89.99 to $149.99, smart ceiling and wall options from about $24.99, and bathroom mirror lighting examples up to $341.99.

The installed price can be very different from the shelf price. HomeGuide reports professional light fixture installation commonly around $100 to $650 depending on type and size, with fixtures often $50 to $400+ and labor to add a new light around $50 to $250. Thumbtack’s 2026 data puts the national average light-fixture installation range around $191 to $631, with many people paying about $336. Angi’s July 2026 guide reports standard fixture installation at $158 to $1,021; pendant installation is typically $100 to $300, while heavy or complex chandeliers can reach $3,000.

Best Value
EZVALO Under Cabinet Lighting with Charging Station, Motion Sensor Lights
  • Charge 3 Lights at a Time, Not One by One: The USB-C charging station charges up to 3 lights together, so you need fewer charging cables and fewer outlets. Each light has a built-in 2000mAh rechargeable battery for approximately 13–40 days in Auto Mode or up to 11 hours in Always-On Mode.
  • Motion Sensor or Always-On—Choose What Works: The 120° motion sensor detects movement up to 10 ft and turns the light off after 20 seconds of no motion. Choose Night Motion Mode for dark or low-light conditions, All-Day Motion Mode when you want motion activation regardless of surrounding light, or Always-On Mode when you want the light to stay on continuously.
  • 3 Color Temperatures for Different Tasks: Choose Warm White 3000K for warmer, more comfortable light, Natural White 4500K for everyday tasks, or Cool White 6500K for brighter, crisper light when prepping, cleaning, or organizing. Stepless dimming lets you adjust the brightness to the exact level you want.
  • Control Multiple Lights from One Remote: Adjust brightness, switch modes, or set a 15, 30, 60, 90, or 120-minute timer from up to 16 ft away. Buttons on each light also let you control that light individually, while memory recalls your last-used settings.
  • Cordless, Magnetic & Easy to Install: No hardwiring or electrician required. Attach the lights directly to suitable metal surfaces or use the included adhesive mounting plates, then simply remove the magnetic light body whenever it is time to recharge. Great for kitchen cabinets, closets, pantries, shelves, and other small spaces where more light is needed.

Recessed lighting varies more because the work often involves cutting ceilings, fishing wire, adding switches, patching drywall, and painting. Current national ranges from major cost guides put recessed lighting roughly in the hundreds to over $1,000 depending on fixture count and access.

When to DIY and When to Call an Electrician

As a rule, DIY is appropriate for plug-in table lamps, floor lamps, cord-kit pendants, clamp lights, battery accents, lampshade swaps, smart bulbs, and many LED strip installations. These are decor and low-risk usability upgrades when cords are managed properly.

Call an electrician when you are adding a new ceiling or wall location, moving a fixture, changing a switch, installing a dimmer, adding recessed lighting, working in a bathroom, working outdoors, dealing with aluminum or old cloth wiring, or discovering an electrical box that is loose, undersized, or not rated for the fixture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permits depend on the jurisdiction and scope. The National Electrical Code sets the baseline used across the US, but local adoption and amendments matter. Some states and municipalities require permits for new circuits, added fixtures, bathroom electrical work, exterior electrical work, and service changes. If the project touches wiring behind walls or ceilings, check local requirements before work starts.

For remodels, the best time to plan lighting is before drywall, cabinet installation, or built-in assembly. That is when crews can add blocking, route wiring, place switch boxes at comfortable heights, and avoid patchwork. Retrofitting is possible, but access drives cost.

How to Choose the Right IKEA Fixture

Check five things before buying. First, size: a pendant that looks large in the store may disappear over an 84-inch dining table, while a wide shade can crowd an 8-foot ceiling. Second, brightness: look at lumens, not just wattage. Third, color temperature: 2700K to 3000K for relaxed rooms, 3000K to 4000K for task spaces. Fourth, glare: visible bulbs need diffusion, frosting, or careful placement. Fifth, installation: confirm whether the fixture is plug-in, hardwired, damp-rated, dimmable, smart-compatible, and appropriate for the box or surface.

Also check local IKEA availability before designing around one specific fixture. IKEA pricing, stock, last-chance items, and store inventory change. If a project depends on matching pendants or multiple smart fixtures, buy the full set at once after confirming compatibility.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

The best IKEA lighting ideas are not about buying the trendiest shade. They are about fixing the room’s actual problem: a dark corner, shadowed kitchen counters, a flat living room, a dead hallway, no reading light, a plain bookcase, or a harsh builder-grade ceiling fixture.

Start with the three layers: ambient, task, and accent. Use LEDs, choose the right Kelvin temperature, control glare, and scale the fixture to the room. Keep plug-in upgrades simple, but treat hardwired lighting like construction work. When the wiring, box, dimmer, rating, or permit matters, the inexpensive fixture still deserves a professional installation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IKEA lighting good enough for a remodel?

Yes, for many decorative and functional upgrades. The key is using the right fixture in the right location and budgeting separately for professional installation when wiring, switches, dimmers, or rated bathroom and outdoor fixtures are involved.

What color temperature should I use for IKEA bulbs?

Use 2700K to 3000K for bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. Use 3000K to 4000K for kitchens, laundry rooms, offices, and task-heavy spaces. Avoid harsh cool light in relaxing rooms unless it is dedicated task lighting.

Can I install an IKEA pendant myself?

A plug-in pendant or cord kit is usually a DIY project. A hardwired pendant should be installed by a licensed electrician if the box needs to move, the wiring is old, the fixture is heavy, or local code requires a permit.

How much does it cost to install an IKEA light fixture?

The fixture itself may cost $10 to $190 for many IKEA pendant, ceiling, and smart examples. Professional installation commonly runs about $100 to $650, with national 2026 ranges around $191 to $631 for many light-fixture installs.

Are IKEA smart lights worth it?

They are worth it when you want dimming, scenes, remote control, scheduling, or color changes without replacing every fixture. Decide whether simple remote control is enough or whether you want app control with additional equipment such as the DIRIGERA hub.

Can IKEA lights be used in bathrooms or outdoors?
