Millipedes in the House? Fix the Moisture and Entry Points First

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are seeing millipedes in your home, the fastest answer is simple: vacuum or sweep up the ones you see, dry out the areas where they are appearing, and seal the low entry points around doors, garage slabs, basement windows, crawl-space vents, utility penetrations, and foundation cracks. Sprays can help in some cases, but they are not the main fix. Millipedes are usually a moisture-and-entry-point problem, not a true indoor infestation.

On construction and repair jobs, we treat repeated millipede sightings as a clue. They often show up after heavy rain, drought, irrigation changes, or a sharp temperature swing because the damp outdoor habitat around the foundation has changed. If the home is dry, most millipedes that wander inside die within a few days. If they keep returning, look outside and below the living space: wet mulch, clogged gutters, negative grading, damp crawl spaces, basement seepage, and open gaps at the building envelope.

The right sequence is remove, dry, exclude. After that, targeted exterior pest treatment may be reasonable. Doing it in the opposite order usually wastes money.

What Millipedes Are Telling You About Your House

Millipedes feed mostly on decaying organic matter and need damp environments. Around a house, that means leaf litter, thick mulch, rotting wood, wet soil, overwatered foundation plantings, damp crawl spaces, and shaded foundation edges that never fully dry. They do not bite or sting. Some species can release irritating defensive fluids, so avoid crushing them on carpet, drywall, baseboards, or bare skin. Sweep or vacuum instead.

When millipedes come indoors, they are usually moving from outside breeding and hiding areas. They often enter through the lowest available openings: worn door sweeps, loose thresholds, garage door corners, cracks where a slab meets a foundation wall, basement window gaps, missing pipe escutcheons, utility penetrations, and unsealed siding or sill transitions. A gap only 1/8 inch wide can be enough for small crawling pests, especially at a door or foundation joint.

The most useful inspection window is 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain. That is when wet mulch, overflowing gutters, ponding soil, seepage marks, and active migration paths are easiest to spot. Walk the exterior slowly with a flashlight. Look at the foundation, not just the rooms where you found millipedes.

Step 1: Remove the Millipedes You See Indoors

For a light indoor problem, cleanup should take 10 to 30 minutes. Use a vacuum with a hose attachment, a broom and dustpan, or disposable gloves and paper towels. Empty the vacuum contents into a sealed trash bag and dispose of it outdoors. If using a bagless vacuum, empty the canister promptly and wipe it out if needed.

Avoid crushing millipedes on finished surfaces. Their fluids can stain light carpet, painted baseboards, and porous flooring. They can also irritate skin or eyes, so wash your hands after handling them and keep children and pets away from piles of insects until cleanup is complete.

Do not start with indoor foggers. Millipedes usually are not nesting in the room, pantry, or closet. Broad indoor spraying adds chemical exposure without addressing the damp exterior source. If a few are showing up in a basement, garage, mudroom, or first-floor bathroom, the better question is: where is the nearby moisture and where is the opening?

Step 2: Dry the Conditions That Attract Them

Moisture correction is the center of long-term millipede control. We start at the roofline and work down because water problems often begin above the foundation. A clogged gutter can dump hundreds of gallons of water at the foundation during a storm. A short downspout can concentrate roof runoff right where millipedes are living. Soil that slopes toward the house can keep the wall, sill area, and crawl-space perimeter damp for days.

Check gutters and downspouts

Clean gutters and confirm that water exits freely at every downspout. Downspout extensions are often under $50 for a DIY fix and should discharge several feet away from the foundation where practical. For many homes, 4 to 6 feet of extension makes a noticeable difference. If the yard is flat or the extension creates a trip hazard, a buried drain line may be needed, but the outlet still needs a legal and practical discharge location.

Correct grading at the foundation

Soil should slope away from the house, not back toward it. A common target is about 6 inches of fall over the first 10 feet where site conditions allow. Do not pile soil above siding, brick weep holes, window wells, or sill plates to fake a slope. That can create rot, termite, and drainage problems. If the foundation edge is low, the fix may involve regrading farther out, adjusting hardscape, adding a swale, or improving drainage.

Reduce mulch, leaves, and wood near the wall

Thick mulch is one of the most common millipede habitats we see near houses. Keep mulch modest in depth, usually 2 to 3 inches, and do not mound it against siding or foundation vents. Where practical, maintain a 12- to 24-inch inspection strip along the foundation. That strip can be gravel, exposed concrete, pavers, or simply a clean, dry edge depending on the house and landscape. The point is to let the wall dry and make gaps visible.

Move firewood, lumber scraps, leaf piles, compost, and dense groundcover away from the foundation. Even a beautiful planting bed can become a pest bridge if irrigation hits the siding twice a day and mulch stays wet all week.

Measure crawl-space and basement humidity

Do not guess about crawl-space moisture. Use a basic digital hygrometer, often $10 to $25, and check relative humidity. Persistent high humidity suggests a water-management problem: missing or damaged vapor barrier, poor drainage, plumbing leaks, inadequate ventilation or conditioning, or groundwater seepage. A crawl space that smells musty, has wet insulation, shows condensation on ducts, or has standing water needs more than pest spray.

Many crawl-space fixes have code and building-science implications. Blocking vents, sealing openings, adding a dehumidifier, or encapsulating a crawl space should be planned as a system. Vapor retarders, drainage paths, combustion safety, insulation, access, electrical service, and local code requirements all matter.

Step 3: Seal the Entry Points

Once the wet habitat is reduced, close the paths millipedes use to get inside. Start low. Most millipede entry happens at or near grade, not through the attic.

Inspect exterior doors first. Replace torn door sweeps, adjust thresholds, and check the corners where the sweep meets the jamb. A new door sweep or weatherstripping kit is often $10 to $40. Garage doors need special attention because the bottom seal can look acceptable from across the garage but still leave open corners large enough for pests and water.

Next, inspect basement windows, window wells, crawl-space doors, and foundation vents. Repair loose screens and seal gaps around frames with the correct material for the substrate. Use exterior-grade sealant for small cracks and joints. Use backer rod before sealant where gaps are wider than about 1/4 inch, so the sealant has the right shape and does not fail prematurely.

Utility penetrations are another common path. Look where air-conditioning lines, hose bibs, cable, gas piping, electrical conduit, and dryer vents enter the wall. Gaps around these penetrations should be sealed with durable exterior materials compatible with the pipe, wall, and movement involved. Do not seal active weep holes in brick veneer. Do not block required combustion-air openings or drainage paths.

Should You Use Insecticide?

Insecticide can be useful for large recurring migrations, but it should come after habitat correction. Extension guidance consistently points to nonchemical controls first because millipedes are tied to moisture and organic debris. If you spray over deep mulch, the product may not reach the soil and hiding areas where millipedes are active. Pull mulch and debris back before any targeted treatment.

If you choose a homeowner product, use an EPA-registered insecticide labeled for millipedes or exterior perimeter pests. Common DIY material costs in 2026 are about $25 to $80 for a labeled product plus a small sprayer or granular applicator. Read the label before purchase and again before application. The label controls where you can apply it, how much to use, what protective equipment is required, and when children and pets can re-enter the area. Keep people and pets away until treated areas are dry, or longer if the label requires it.

Target exterior entry zones and hiding areas rather than broadcasting chemicals indoors. Typical areas include the foundation perimeter, door thresholds, garage door edges, exterior cracks and crevices, and the soil or hardscape immediately next to likely entry points. Do not apply more than the label allows. More product is not better; it can be unsafe, illegal, and less effective than correcting the water source.

Cost to Get Rid of Millipedes in 2026

Most light seasonal millipede problems are inexpensive. The cost rises when the real problem is drainage, crawl-space humidity, or foundation gaps. That is why a $15 tube of sealant sometimes works, and other times the right repair is gutter correction, grading, sump work, or crawl-space improvement.

Scope Typical 2026 Cost What It Covers
Light DIY cleanup and sealing $10-$50 Caulk, door sweep repair, weatherstripping, gloves, trash bags, and basic cleanup for a few indoor millipedes.
DIY perimeter treatment $25-$80 EPA-registered homeowner insecticide labeled for millipedes or perimeter pests, plus a small sprayer or applicator if needed.
Yard and foundation cleanup $0-$300 DIY Removing leaves, excess mulch, rotting wood, dense groundcover, and debris from the foundation edge.
One-time pest-control visit $100-$260 common range; broader quotes $100-$500 Inspection and targeted treatment for a typical home, varying by region, size, access, and pest pressure.
Recurring pest plan $40-$70 per visit or $300-$900 per year Periodic general pest service, often useful where exterior pest pressure is high.
Moisture and drainage repairs Under $50 to several thousand dollars Downspout extensions, gutter cleaning, grading, dehumidification, sump work, vapor barrier replacement, drainage correction, or crawl-space encapsulation.

Regional costs vary. Humid Southern and Mid-Atlantic markets, older homes, crawl-space homes, rowhomes, dense landscaping, and large foundations often cost more because there are more moisture sources and more low entry points to inspect. A newer slab-on-grade home with one bad door sweep may be cheap to fix. A 70-year-old crawl-space home with clogged gutters, negative grading, and a torn vapor barrier is a different project.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when you see a small number of millipedes, the house is otherwise dry, and the entry point is obvious. If you find 10 millipedes near a garage door after a storm and the bottom seal is torn, replace the seal, clean the corner, reduce nearby mulch, and monitor for two weeks. That is a practical homeowner repair.

Hire pest control when millipedes arrive in large numbers, return every season despite cleanup, or show up across multiple rooms. A pest professional can identify exterior pressure points and apply labeled treatments more efficiently than most homeowners. Expect about $100 to $260 for many one-time general pest visits in 2026, with broader quotes ranging from about $100 to $500 depending on home size, region, access, and severity.

Hire a contractor when the millipedes point to building defects. That includes wet crawl spaces, standing water near the foundation, basement seepage, rotted trim or sill areas, failed door thresholds, damaged foundation vents, recurring gutter overflow, or grading that sends water toward the house. Pest control can reduce the insects, but it cannot make a wet crawl space dry or move roof water away from a foundation.

A good contractor inspection should look at gutters, downspouts, grading, hardscape slope, crawl-space vapor barrier condition, basement water marks, rim joist and sill plate areas, utility penetrations, and door or garage transitions. Those are the places where millipede control overlaps with building durability.

Room-by-Room Trouble Spots

Basements

Basements are common because they are cool, low, and close to damp soil. Check the slab-to-wall joint, floor drains, sump area, exterior stairwell drains, window wells, and pipe penetrations. If millipedes appear after storms, inspect outside at the same wall. Look for overflowing gutters, clogged window well drains, or soil pitched toward the foundation.

Garages

Garage doors are one of the easiest entry points. Look for daylight under the bottom seal and at both corners. A tight center seal does not matter if the corners are open. Also check the expansion joint where the driveway meets the garage slab. Wet leaves and mulch against the garage apron can feed the problem.

Crawl-space homes

If millipedes appear near floor registers, plumbing chases, interior access panels, or first-floor bathrooms, inspect the crawl space. Check humidity, vapor barrier coverage, standing water, wet insulation, and gaps around plumbing penetrations. A proper vapor retarder should cover exposed soil and be detailed well enough to limit ground moisture. If water is entering during storms, drainage must be handled before pest control will hold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bathrooms and laundry rooms

Millipedes in bathrooms do not automatically mean they are coming from the drain. They may be entering through wall penetrations, slab cracks, exterior walls, or nearby crawl-space openings. Still, check for plumbing leaks, loose toilet bases, wet vanity cabinets, and dryer vent gaps.

Common Mistakes That Keep Millipedes Coming Back

The biggest mistake is treating only the visible insects. Vacuuming solves the immediate nuisance, but it does not change wet mulch, clogged gutters, or a damp crawl space. The second mistake is crushing them indoors, which can stain surfaces and expose skin or eyes to irritating fluids.

Another common mistake is spraying over thick mulch. Mulch can block or bind the treatment while leaving the habitat intact. Pull it back, reduce depth, and let the foundation edge dry. Likewise, avoid overwatering foundation plantings or aiming irrigation heads at the siding. If the wall is wet every morning, pests will use that zone.

Do not block crawl-space vents, brick weep holes, or drainage openings without understanding what they do. Closing the wrong opening can trap moisture and create a bigger repair. If a vented crawl space is being converted or sealed, it needs a moisture-control plan, not just foam in the openings.

A Practical 48-Hour Millipede Control Plan

Hour 1: Vacuum or sweep up all visible millipedes. Empty the contents into a sealed bag outdoors. Note where you found them and how many you saw.

Same day: Check doors, garage seals, basement windows, and nearby exterior walls. Replace obvious failed weatherstripping or door sweeps. Seal small exterior gaps with appropriate sealant.

After the next rain, within 24 to 48 hours: Walk the foundation. Look for wet mulch, ponding soil, gutter overflow, short downspouts, soggy planting beds, and water stains. Correct the simple items first: clean gutters, extend downspouts, remove leaf piles, thin mulch to 2 to 3 inches, and create a 12- to 24-inch inspection strip where practical.

Week 1: Monitor the same rooms daily. If activity drops sharply, keep the area dry and continue exterior cleanup. If activity remains high, inspect the crawl space or basement more closely and consider a targeted pest-control visit.

Month 1: Address structural moisture issues. That may mean regrading, drainage correction, vapor barrier repair, dehumidification, sump improvements, or foundation penetration sealing. This is where a recurring millipede issue becomes useful: it can reveal water-management defects before they become larger building problems.

Bottom Line

To get rid of millipedes in your home, remove the insects, dry the perimeter, and close the openings. Most indoor millipedes are wanderers from damp outdoor habitats, and they usually cannot survive long in a dry house. If they keep coming back, do not keep escalating indoor sprays. Inspect the building.

For a simple case, $10 to $50 in materials may be enough. For a heavy recurring case, a $100 to $260 pest-control visit can help reduce pressure. But when the source is clogged drainage, negative grading, basement seepage, or crawl-space humidity, the durable fix is construction work: move water away from the house, repair the envelope, and keep the foundation edge dry enough to inspect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I suddenly have millipedes in my house?

Millipedes often move indoors after heavy rain, drought, or temperature swings. They are usually coming from damp mulch, leaf litter, wet soil, or crawl-space conditions near the foundation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are millipedes dangerous to people or pets?

Millipedes do not bite or sting, but some species release irritating defensive fluids. Avoid crushing them, wash your hands after handling them, and keep pets from eating large numbers.

What kills millipedes instantly indoors?

A vacuum is usually the best indoor tool. It removes them immediately without staining surfaces or adding unnecessary pesticide inside the living space.

Will millipedes go away on their own?

Often, yes. In a dry house, indoor millipedes usually die within days. Repeated sightings mean there is likely a damp outdoor source or an entry gap that still needs correction.

Should I spray for millipedes or fix moisture first?

Fix moisture first. Sprays work best as targeted exterior treatments after wet mulch, debris, drainage problems, and entry points have been addressed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When should I call a contractor instead of pest control?

Call a contractor if millipedes are tied to wet crawl spaces, basement seepage, poor grading, clogged drainage, rotted trim, failed thresholds, or foundation penetrations. Pest control cannot fix those building conditions.
