Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most smelly laundry, the right fix is not a stronger perfume. It is matching the product chemistry to the odor source. Sweat-soaked work shirts need enzymes. Musty towels often need oxygen bleach and a complete dry. Sour-smelling loads may need washer cleaning. Pet urine needs a pet enzyme product. Bacterial odors and illness laundry are where a true laundry sanitizer earns its place.
On our job sites, we deal with a lot of hard-worn fabric: uniforms, towels, gloves, high-vis gear, knee pads, and truck towels that sit damp longer than they should. The lesson is simple: odor removal is part cleaning product, part laundry habit, and part building performance. A damp laundry closet, restricted dryer vent, or front-loader gasket that never dries can undo even a good detergent.
For 2026, most practical laundry odor removers cost about $5 to $28 per container in the U.S., depending on size, concentration, scent line, and whether the product is a detergent, booster, rinse additive, or EPA-registered sanitizer. Below are the seven products and product types worth considering, plus the situations where each one makes sense.
Quick Comparison: Best Laundry Odor Removers by Problem
| Pick | Best For | Typical 2026 Cost | How to Use It |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Free & Clear or Sport | Odor-causing bacteria, illness laundry, gym clothes | About $10-$14 for 90 oz; about $28 for some 2-packs | Add to rinse cycle and follow label contact time |
| OxiClean Odor Blasters Powder | Musty towels, mildew-like smells, sweat, presoak jobs | About $9-$14 for common 3 lb to larger formats | Use as a presoak or wash booster, as directed |
| Downy Rinse & Refresh | Detergent residue, fabric buildup, trapped odors | About $7-$17 per bottle; around $14 for 48 oz at some stores | Use in the fabric softener compartment during rinse |
| ACTIVE Enzyme Laundry Booster | Activewear, body oils, sweat, synthetic fabrics | About $17-$20 for 2 lb / 64 loads | Add with detergent; presoak severe odors |
| Persil Advanced Clean Oxi + Odor Fighter | Routine odor prevention, family laundry, work clothes | About $5 for 34 oz; $18-$20 for 126 oz / 75 loads | Use as the main detergent at the proper dose |
| Nature’s Miracle Laundry Boost | Pet bedding, pet urine, organic pet odors | About $14-$15 per bottle | Add to wash with detergent; treat quickly |
| Fragrance-free oxygen or enzyme odor remover | Sensitive households, baby items, towels, bedding | Usually about $8-$20 depending on format | Choose dye-free, fragrance-free, and use by soil type |
How to Diagnose Laundry Odor Before Buying Anything
Start with the pattern. If only towels smell, look at drying time, detergent dose, and fabric softener buildup. Towels hold a lot of water; if they sit wet in a washer for 6 hours or get folded while even slightly damp, the odor will come back. If workout shirts smell fine out of the dryer but stink again after 10 minutes of wearing, the issue is usually trapped body oils in synthetic fibers. If every load has a sour smell, inspect the washer before blaming the detergent.

A front-load washer can hold moisture in the door gasket, dispenser drawer, drain area, and filter. Owner complaints about odor are common enough that it should be treated as a maintenance issue, not a rare defect. Recent reporting has put odor complaints at about 13% for front-load washers, compared with about 6% for high-efficiency top-loaders and 3% for top-load agitator machines. That lines up with what we see in houses: tighter machines use less water, but they also punish over-dosing detergent and closing the door on a wet gasket.
Before changing products, do four basic checks. Use HE detergent in HE machines. Cut back detergent to the line for load size, not the largest cap mark. Move wet laundry to the dryer promptly, ideally within 30 minutes. Leave the washer door and dispenser cracked open after use so the machine can dry.
If the laundry room itself smells damp, widen the inspection. A clogged dryer vent can leave clothes damp after a full cycle. A laundry closet with no meaningful air path can trap humidity. A dry plumbing trap can let sewer gas mimic laundry odor. Product changes will not permanently fix those problems.
1. Best Sanitizer: Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Free & Clear or Sport
Lysol Laundry Sanitizer is the right tool when the concern is odor-causing bacteria. It is bleach-free, and the EPA-labeled versions claim to kill 99.9% of bacteria when used according to directions. The key phrase is according to directions. A sanitizer is not just a splash-in booster. Sanitizing performance depends on dose, cycle placement, and contact time in the rinse cycle.
Use this for sweaty uniforms, gym clothes, towels after illness, bedding after stomach bugs, and laundry that has a persistent sour or bacterial odor even after normal washing. Free & Clear is the better starting point for households that want less fragrance. Sport makes sense when the laundry load is mostly athletic gear and work clothing.
Typical 2026 pricing is about $10 to $14 for a 90 oz bottle at major U.S. retailers, with some 2-packs around $28. That puts it above basic detergent but reasonable for targeted use. We would not use it for every load unless there is a specific hygiene need. For routine laundry, a good detergent and proper drying are cheaper.
Best practice: wash first with detergent, then let the sanitizer work in the rinse cycle. Do not combine it casually with bleach, vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaning chemicals. Read the label every time, especially if you are using a different scent or formula than the last bottle.
2. Best for Musty Towels: OxiClean Odor Blasters Powder
Musty towels are usually a three-part problem: residue in the fibers, moisture held too long, and incomplete drying. Oxygen-based powders such as OxiClean Odor Blasters are useful because they support both stain and odor removal, especially when used as a presoak. They are chlorine-free and color-safe when used as directed, but they are not the same thing as a registered disinfectant.

For severe odor, use a presoak before the regular wash. A 1- to 6-hour soak is common for oxygen powder workflows, but follow the package directions for your fabric and load size. Then wash warm or hot if the towel care label allows.
Expect to pay about $9 to $14 for common 3 lb tubs and larger retail formats. A 3 lb tub has been listed around $9.28 at major retailers, while bigger 5 lb or multi-pack formats cost more upfront but can reduce cost per load.

For towels, do not add fabric softener. It coats fibers, reduces absorbency, and can trap the smell you are trying to remove. Use less detergent than you think, run an extra rinse if the towels feel slick, and dry completely before folding. A towel that is 95% dry is not dry enough for a linen closet.
3. Best for Detergent Buildup: Downy Rinse & Refresh
Downy Rinse & Refresh is an acidic rinse additive. Its job is different from detergent, sanitizer, or oxygen bleach. It helps strip away residue that can trap odors in fabric fibers. That makes it a good option for households that have been using too much detergent, adding scent beads, or relying on fabric softener for towels and athletic wear.

It goes in the fabric softener compartment and releases during the rinse, where an acidic product can help remove detergent residue. Do not pour it into the detergent cup and assume it will do the same job.
Typical pricing is about $7 to $17 depending on bottle size and retailer. A 48 oz / 70-load bottle has been around $14 at some home improvement stores, and 2-packs around $27. For a household fighting buildup, one bottle can be enough to reset habits and confirm whether residue was the real issue.
This is also a good reminder that more product does not mean cleaner laundry. Modern HE machines use low water volume. Extra detergent can stay behind, especially in cold cycles and quick cycles. If the washer says 1 tablespoon or a low cap line is enough for a small HE load, take that seriously.
4. Best for Activewear and Sweat: ACTIVE Enzyme Laundry Booster
Workout clothing and modern workwear are often made with synthetic fibers that hold body oils. Cotton releases soil differently. Polyester and performance fabrics can hang onto odor at the fiber level, then release it as soon as body heat warms the garment. That is why a shirt can smell fine in the drawer and bad 10 minutes into a workout or workday.
ACTIVE Enzyme Laundry Booster is built for that problem. Enzymes break down odor sources such as sweat, body oils, food soils, and organic messes instead of covering them with fragrance. The typical 2026 price is about $17 to $20 for a 2 lb container rated around 64 loads, with some listings near $16.96.
For activewear, turn garments inside out before washing. Use an enzyme detergent or booster. Skip fabric softener, which can coat wicking fabrics and lock in odor. Use warm water if the garment label allows, and avoid high heat if the care tag warns against it. Air-drying or low heat often protects elastic and performance finishes better than a hot dryer.
For severe odor, presoak before washing. A 30-minute soak may be enough for routine sweat; older odors may need longer within the product’s instructions. Do not overload the washer. If clothes cannot move freely, water and chemistry cannot reach the soil.
5. Best Everyday Detergent for Odor Prevention: Persil Advanced Clean Oxi + Odor Fighter
Not every load needs a separate odor remover. For routine family laundry, work clothes, socks, undershirts, school uniforms, and lightly sweaty gear, a strong main detergent is usually the better first purchase. Persil Advanced Clean Oxi + Odor Fighter is a practical pick because it combines everyday detergent cleaning with odor-focused performance.

The 2026 price range is broad because bottle sizes vary. Smaller 34 oz / 20-load bottles can run about $5. Large 126 oz / 75-load bottles often sit around $18 to $20. Mid-size bottles around 84 oz are commonly near $13. The larger bottle usually gives the better cost per load, but only if you can store it and dose it accurately.
Use this as the base layer: correct detergent, correct dose, correct cycle, prompt drying. If laundry still smells after that, then add the product that matches the problem. For example, add an enzyme booster for workout gear, oxygen powder for musty towels, or sanitizer for bacterial concerns.
On job-site laundry, the most common mistake is running everything on cold quick wash with a full cap of detergent. Cold water has its place, especially for color protection and energy savings, but heavy soil needs enough wash time and agitation. If the clothing care label allows warm water, use it for body oils, socks, towels, and work shirts.
6. Best for Pet Urine and Pet Bedding: Nature’s Miracle Laundry Boost
Pet odor is not the same as general sweat odor. Urine, feces, vomit, saliva, and pet bedding oils need enzyme chemistry designed for organic pet messes. Nature’s Miracle Laundry Boost is a practical option for washable pet beds, blankets, towels, crate pads, and clothing that picked up urine odor.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Expect a typical price around $14 to $15 per bottle in pet retail channels. It is not the cheapest additive, but pet odor is one area where the right chemistry matters. A perfume-heavy product may smell better for a day and then let the urine odor return, especially when the fabric gets humid.
Treat pet laundry quickly. Remove solids first. Blot wet areas before washing. Wash pet items separately from regular clothing when possible. If the item has a removable cover, wash the cover and inspect the inner cushion. If urine has soaked into foam, batting, or a non-washable insert, the odor source may be inside the item, not just on the cover.
Do not use hot dryer heat until the odor is gone. Heat can set some odors and stains. Air-dry first, inspect the fabric, then run another treatment if needed. Once the odor is removed, dry fully before putting the pet bed back in service.
7. Best for Sensitive Households: Fragrance-Free Oxygen or Enzyme Options
Fragrance-free does not mean weak. For sensitive-skin households, the right move is to separate odor-removal chemistry from added scent. Look for dye-free and fragrance-free products that still use oxygen cleaning, enzymes, or sanitizer chemistry where appropriate.

Lysol Laundry Sanitizer Free & Clear is a good option when sanitizing is the goal. For sweat and body oils, use a fragrance-free enzyme detergent or booster if available. For musty towels, a fragrance-free oxygen powder can be a better fit than scent beads or heavy fabric softener. Most products in this category fall between about $8 and $20, depending on size and concentration.
The big mistake is assuming a strong smell means the clothing is clean. Scent beads and fabric softeners can make laundry smell pleasant, but they do not remove bacteria, body oils, pet urine, washer mildew, or detergent residue. In some cases, they add another coating to fabric and make the underlying odor harder to remove.

If someone in the home has eczema, asthma, fragrance sensitivity, or a baby in the laundry rotation, start mild. Use the lowest effective dose. Run an extra rinse if needed. Keep sanitizer and enzyme products available for targeted loads instead of turning every wash into a chemical stack.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to Use Laundry Odor Removers Without Creating New Problems
The safest system is simple: do not mix chemicals casually. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. Do not combine sanitizer, oxygen powder, vinegar, and detergent in the same compartment hoping for a stronger result. You can waste the chemistry, damage fabrics, or create a safety hazard.
Use one main strategy per load. For sweat, choose enzyme detergent or booster. For musty towels, use oxygen powder and a full dry. For detergent buildup, use an acidic rinse product. For bacterial concerns, use sanitizer in the rinse cycle according to label directions. For pet urine, use a pet enzyme product and avoid dryer heat until the smell is gone.
Measure products. In an HE washer, a large detergent dose can leave residue because the machine is designed to use less water. A normal load may need far less than a full cap. If you see suds at the end of the rinse, if towels feel waxy, or if dark clothing has dull residue, reduce detergent and run a cleaning cycle.
Give laundry enough space. A washer drum packed tight cannot circulate water. A dryer packed tight cannot move humid air through the load. For bulky towels or bedding, leave room for items to tumble. A load that takes 90 minutes to dry in a normal dryer may be too large, too wet from poor spin, or drying through a restricted vent.
When the Problem Is the Washer, Dryer Vent, or Laundry Room
If odor returns no matter which product you use, inspect the equipment and room. Clean the washer gasket, dispenser drawer, and accessible filter or drain area. Run the washer-clean cycle with the manufacturer’s recommended cleaner. Leave the door and dispenser open after washing so trapped moisture can evaporate.
Dryer venting matters. A typical residential dryer duct should be smooth metal, properly supported, and as short and straight as the layout allows. Long runs, crushed flex duct, excess elbows, and lint restriction slow drying. When fabric stays damp too long, musty odor comes back.
A warning sign is a dryer that needs two full cycles for towels that used to dry in one. Other signs include a hot laundry room, lint collecting around the dryer connection, a burning smell, or a weak exterior exhaust flap. Clean the lint screen every load and inspect the vent path at least annually. Homes with long duct runs, large families, pets, or heavy towel use may need more frequent service.
Laundry closets also need air movement. A tight closet with solid doors can trap heat and humidity around the washer and dryer. Depending on the home, the fix may be louvered doors, transfer grilles, a properly sized exhaust fan, better dryer duct routing, or humidity control. This is where construction details matter more than another bottle of additive.
When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
DIY is reasonable when the smell is limited to fabric
Handle it yourself when the odor is tied to a clear laundry category: sweaty activewear, musty towels, pet bedding, or detergent buildup. Budget $10 to $25 for the right product, then give yourself 1 to 2 wash cycles to judge the result. Severe towel or activewear odor may need a presoak plus a regular wash before you know whether it worked.

DIY washer maintenance is also reasonable if you can safely access the gasket, dispenser, and cleaning cycle. Plan on 30 to 60 minutes for a basic cleaning. Wear gloves, follow the washer manual, and do not force open any drain or filter component you do not understand.
Hire a pro when drying, venting, or plumbing is suspect
Bring in a qualified appliance technician, dryer vent specialist, plumber, or remodeling contractor when the issue points beyond the hamper. That includes repeated sour smells from every load, visible mold around the laundry area, a dryer that takes two cycles, a disconnected or crushed vent, sewer-like odor near the standpipe, or humidity damage on walls and trim.
Dryer vent work is more than convenience. Lint restriction is a fire risk, and poor exhaust leaves clothing damp enough for odor to return. Plumbing trap issues can create sewer gas smells that homeowners misdiagnose as laundry odor. In finished laundry closets, a contractor can also evaluate door undercuts, transfer air, exhaust routing, and moisture damage before it becomes a larger repair.
Permits are not usually needed to change laundry detergent or clean a washer. They may be required when adding or relocating dryer exhaust, changing plumbing, installing a new laundry sink, moving gas lines, adding a dedicated electrical circuit, or modifying exterior penetrations. Local codes vary, so check your city or county before opening walls or changing mechanical systems.
Our Bottom Line
If you want one general-purpose laundry odor product, start with a strong detergent such as Persil Advanced Clean Oxi + Odor Fighter and correct your washer habits. If towels are the problem, add OxiClean Odor Blasters and dry them completely. If activewear is the problem, use an enzyme booster. If bacteria or illness laundry is the concern, use Lysol Laundry Sanitizer exactly as labeled in the rinse cycle. If pet urine is involved, use a pet enzyme product. If detergent buildup is the problem, Downy Rinse & Refresh is the better tool than more detergent.
The product matters, but the room matters too. Clothes that cannot dry fully, washers that stay wet, and dryer vents that cannot move air will keep making odor. Fix the source first, then use the right chemistry for the fabric.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best laundry odor remover for sweaty workout clothes?
Use an enzyme detergent or booster, such as ACTIVE Enzyme Laundry Booster, because enzymes break down sweat, body oils, and organic odor sources. Wash garments inside out, skip fabric softener, and use warm water if the care label allows.
Is laundry sanitizer the same as laundry odor remover?
No. A laundry sanitizer targets bacteria and must be used according to label directions, usually in the rinse cycle with the required contact time. Other odor removers may use oxygen cleaners, enzymes, or acidic rinse chemistry but are not registered disinfectants.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow do I get musty smells out of towels?
Presoak towels with an oxygen-based odor remover, wash warm or hot if the care label allows, use less detergent, skip fabric softener, and dry the towels completely before folding. If the smell returns, clean the washer gasket and dispenser.
Why do my clothes still smell after washing?
Common causes include too much detergent, washer mildew, trapped body oils, wet laundry sitting too long, overloaded machines, or poor dryer venting. If every load smells sour, clean and inspect the washer before buying more additives.
Can I use vinegar, oxygen bleach, and laundry sanitizer together?
Do not mix laundry chemicals casually. Never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or other cleaners. Use one odor-removal strategy per load and follow the product label for washer compartment, dose, and contact time.
When is laundry odor a construction or ventilation problem?
Suspect the room or equipment when clothes take two dryer cycles, the laundry closet feels humid, the dryer vent is long or lint-restricted, the washer never dries, or there is a sewer-like odor near the drain. Those conditions need inspection, not just a new detergent.
