If you have mosquitoes inside your house, start with three jobs in this order: remove standing water, block the entry points, then treat the adults that remain. Spraying the room first may kill a few mosquitoes tonight, but it will not solve the problem if a floor drain, plant saucer, torn screen, loose door sweep, wet crawlspace, or clogged gutter is feeding the next round.
On our job sites, we treat indoor mosquitoes as a building-envelope and moisture-control issue before we treat it as a pesticide issue. A house that keeps insects out has tight screens, working door closers, sealed penetrations, dry utility areas, clean drainage paths, and no hidden stagnant water. The same details that make a home more comfortable also make it harder for mosquitoes to get in and multiply.
The short version: spend 30 to 60 minutes doing a room-by-room water check, repair obvious screen and door gaps, run fans where people sit, and use only EPA-registered indoor products according to the label if mosquitoes remain. For persistent problems, bring in the right pro: pest control for active treatment, and a contractor for screens, doors, leaks, crawlspace moisture, drainage, gutters, and exterior gaps.
Start With the Source: Mosquitoes Need Water
Mosquitoes do not need a pond to become a problem. They can breed in small amounts of stagnant water, which is why the CDC recommends emptying, scrubbing, turning over, covering, or discarding water-holding items at least once a week. The scrubbing part matters because mosquito eggs can stay attached to container surfaces even after the water is dumped.

Inside a house, the most common breeding sources are not dramatic. They are usually small, quiet, and easy to miss: a plant saucer under a window, a bucket in the laundry room, a floor drain that holds organic sludge, a condensate pan under equipment, or an unused toilet in a basement bath. In humid regions, a wet crawlspace or sump pit can keep a mosquito problem alive even when the main living space looks clean.
Indoor Water Sources to Check First
Work through the house with a flashlight and a towel. If an item can hold water for 5 to 7 days, treat it as a potential mosquito source.
- Kitchen: check under-sink leaks, refrigerator drip trays, plant saucers, recycling bins, trash can bottoms, and pet bowls.
- Bathrooms: check unused toilets, shower corners, floor drains, sink traps, toilet tank leaks, and damp cabinets.
- Bedrooms and living rooms: inspect vases, indoor plants, humidifiers, water features, curtain areas, and windowsills.
- Basement: check sump pits, floor drains, dehumidifier buckets, utility sinks, mop buckets, storage bins, and low spots in the slab.
- Laundry and mechanical rooms: inspect washer pans, water heater pans, HVAC condensate pans, condensate pumps, drain lines, and softener discharge areas.
- Garage: look at buckets, cans, coolers, trash bins, wet mats, and the path between the garage and house.
- Crawlspace: look for standing water, wet insulation, torn vapor barrier, plumbing leaks, poor grading, and open vents without proper mesh.
Empty and scrub anything portable. For drains, flush them and clean visible buildup. For equipment pans or condensate pumps, confirm water is actually draining. If the condensate line discharges near the foundation and creates a wet pocket outside, extend or correct it so water moves away from the house.
Kill the Mosquitoes You Can See, But Do Not Stop There
The fastest way to reduce biting indoors is mechanical: use a vacuum, fly swatter, or indoor trap to remove adult mosquitoes, then run fans in occupied rooms. Mosquitoes are weak flyers. A basic oscillating fan near a bed, desk, or seating area can make it harder for them to land.

We use the same kind of patient inspection on punch-list work: slow down, look at edges and transitions, and you usually find the path.
If you still have mosquitoes after water and entry points are addressed, an indoor insecticide may be appropriate. The CDC advises indoor insecticide only after screens are repaired and water containers are emptied and scrubbed. Use products labeled for indoor mosquito use, follow the label exactly, and observe re-entry, ventilation, pet, aquarium, and food-contact precautions. EPA pesticide labels are legally binding; using a pesticide in a way inconsistent with the label is illegal.
Do not use outdoor-only products inside. Do not fog a room as a substitute for finding the source. And do not assume more chemical means better control. Overapplication can affect indoor air quality and may create unnecessary exposure for children, pets, and sensitive occupants.
Block How Mosquitoes Are Getting In
If mosquitoes keep appearing indoors, they are either breeding inside or getting through the building envelope. In many houses, the entry route is more important than the bug spray.

- Extra long and Save money: The size of the screen repair tape is 2 IN X 30 FT, you can use more of them to repair a larger hole. No need to spend a lot to replace the entire screen mesh then
- Note: This window screen tape is NOT invisible and ventilated. Remember to peel off the release liner and attach the correct side to the tears and holes or it will not very sticky
Start with windows and doors. A good window screen should sit tight in the frame, with no bowed corners, loose spline, torn mesh, or daylight showing at the edges. Standard insect screen mesh is commonly 18-by-16 strands per inch, which is adequate for mosquitoes when the screen is intact and correctly fitted. In areas with smaller biting insects, tighter mesh may be needed, but tighter mesh can reduce airflow and daylight.
High-Value Screen and Door Fixes
- Patch small screen holes: DIY patch kits often cost about $5 to $15 and work for small tears when the frame is sound.
- Replace damaged screen mesh: professional window screen repair can range from roughly $50 for basic fixes to $142 to $175 per repaired screen in some 2026 cost models.
- Replace full window screens: 2026 estimates vary widely, with common professional replacement ranges around $147 to $516 per screen and an average near $318 depending on size, material, access, and frame condition.
- Fix screen doors: installed screen door replacement commonly runs about $170 to $350, with some national ranges around $161 to $524.
- Rescreen porches: porch rescreening can run roughly $600 to $3,500 depending on porch size, height, framing, mesh, and trim details.
- Add weatherstripping and sweeps: many door sweeps or weatherstripping kits cost about $10 to $50 per opening before labor.
Check door operation at dusk, when mosquitoes are most active. Exterior doors should latch without bouncing back, closers should pull screen doors shut, and the sweep should contact the threshold across the full width. A 1/8-inch gap may not look like much, but insects will find it. Look for daylight around the door with the interior lights off and a bright light outside, or reverse the setup at night.
Garage-to-house doors deserve special attention. Many homeowners leave the garage door open in the evening, then open the interior door repeatedly. That creates a large holding area for insects and an easy path into the living space. Add a working closer to the house door, seal the threshold, and avoid propping that door open.
Check the Exterior Conditions Near the House
Indoor mosquito control usually improves when the first 10 to 20 feet around the house are dry and well maintained. Mosquitoes resting in damp shade near bedroom windows, porch doors, or garage entries have a much easier time getting inside.
Walk the perimeter after rain and again the next day. You are looking for water that remains, not water that appears briefly and drains away. Gutters should discharge away from the foundation. Downspouts should not dump into mulch beds beside doors. Porch floors and patios should not hold puddles against thresholds. HVAC condensate should not create a constantly wet area near the slab. Window wells should drain, and crawlspace vents should be screened and intact.
Exterior Mosquito Details Builders Notice
- Clogged gutters: water and leaf debris near second-floor windows can become a breeding source and resting area.
- Flat or back-pitched patios: water that drains toward the house increases moisture at doors and thresholds.
- Low mulch against siding: damp mulch near weep holes, trim, or door frames can keep the perimeter humid.
- Loose utility penetrations: gaps around cable, refrigerant lines, hose bibs, vents, and conduit can become insect paths.
- Open soffit or attic vents: missing or damaged mesh allows insects into transitional spaces.
- Wet crawlspaces: plumbing leaks, missing vapor barrier, poor grading, and inadequate drainage can create a hidden reservoir of moisture.
For small gaps, exterior-grade caulk or foam often costs about $5 to $20 per tube or can. Use the right product for the material and movement. Caulk is better for small, stable seams. Low-expansion foam can work around penetrations, but it needs to be trimmed and protected where exposed. Larger gaps, rotten trim, failed flashing, or moving joints need repair, not just sealant.
Use Bti Correctly for Water You Cannot Eliminate
Bti is a larvicide used in standing water where mosquito larvae develop. It is EPA-registered and, when used as directed, is considered a targeted tool for mosquito larvae. It is not an indoor adult mosquito killer, and it will not stop mosquitoes flying in through torn screens.
Use Bti only where water must remain and the product label allows it. Examples may include certain outdoor drains, rain barrels, ornamental water features, or other unavoidable standing-water locations. Many Bti dunks or bits cost about $10 to $25 per package depending on count and retailer. Follow the label for dose, replacement interval, and allowed sites.

- Additional Note: The window screen kit is FOLDED in the package, don't worry if there are some creases, it will disappear after installation
If a container can be emptied, empty and scrub it instead. Bti is for water that cannot reasonably be removed, not for neglected buckets, clogged gutters, or leaky equipment pans that should be repaired.
What Not to Rely On
Some mosquito advice sounds easy but does not hold up well in a real house. Scented candles, essential oils, plug-in gadgets, bowls of household mixtures, and one-time fogging may reduce annoyance briefly, but they do not correct standing water or entry gaps. Traps can catch mosquitoes, but placement matters and they rarely solve a building-related source on their own.
Residential mosquito misting systems deserve caution. The CDC does not recommend residential mosquito misting systems for homeowners. EPA regulates pesticide products and labels, not the misting equipment itself. If a system is proposed, ask exactly what product will be used, where nozzles will point, how drift will be controlled, what the shutoff procedure is, and how children, pets, pollinators, vegetable gardens, and neighboring properties will be protected.
Inside the house, avoid broad spraying in kitchens, nurseries, bedrooms, or HVAC return areas unless the product is specifically labeled for that use and the application plan is clear. A licensed pest professional should be able to explain the active ingredient, target areas, re-entry time, ventilation requirements, and precautions for pets, aquariums, and sensitive occupants.
Cost Guide: DIY Fixes, Pest Control, and Construction Repairs
Costs vary because mosquito problems vary. A minor indoor issue may be solved with a $10 screen patch, a cleaned drain, and a weekend maintenance pass. A recurring problem tied to porch screens, drainage, crawlspace moisture, or seasonal yard pressure can move into hundreds or thousands of dollars.
| Project or Service | Typical 2026 US Cost | Best Use |
|---|---|---|
| DIY screen patch kit | $5 to $15 | Small holes in otherwise sound screens |
| Door sweep or weatherstripping | $10 to $50 per opening before labor | Gaps under or around exterior doors |
| Caulk or foam for small gaps | $5 to $20 per tube or can | Minor penetrations around utilities, trim, and frames |
| Bti dunks or bits | $10 to $25 per package | Larval control in unavoidable standing water |
| Professional mosquito treatment | About $109 to $198 per treatment; many homeowners around $134 | Active mosquito pressure around the property |
| Exterminator service for mosquitoes | About $105 to $260 nationally | Targeted pest control visit for mosquito activity |
| Broad mosquito service range | $50 to $2,500 per treatment or season; average around $350 | Varies by lot size, frequency, treatment method, and severity |
| Seasonal mosquito plan | Commonly $300 to $900 per season | Recurring warm-season control in high-pressure areas |
| Window screen repair | Often $50 for basic fixes; some models show $142 to $175 per screen | Torn mesh, loose spline, reusable frames |
| Window screen replacement | Commonly $147 to $516 per screen; average near $318 | Damaged frames, custom sizes, upgraded mesh |
| Screen door replacement | About $161 to $524; many installed jobs around $170 to $350 | Damaged door, poor closure, warped frame, torn mesh |
| Porch rescreening | About $600 to $3,500 | Large screened porch, multiple panels, framing or trim work |
For construction-related repairs, labor market, access, material, height, custom sizing, and damage behind the visible surface all affect price. A standard first-floor screen is one kind of job. A second-story custom screen, rotten sill repair, warped screen door frame, or porch rescreen with trim replacement is another.
When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro
DIY makes sense when the problem is visible, small, and low risk. A homeowner can usually empty containers, scrub plant saucers, replace pet water daily, clean a small bucket, patch a small screen tear, install a basic door sweep, and place a fan in a bedroom or porch. Plan on 1 to 3 hours for a thorough first pass through the house and perimeter, then 10 to 20 minutes weekly during mosquito season.
Hire pest control when mosquitoes remain active after water removal and entry repairs, when you need indoor pesticide treatment, or when the yard has heavy seasonal pressure. Ask whether the applicator is licensed in your state, what product will be used, whether it is labeled for indoor use if applied indoors, where it will be applied, how long people and pets must stay away, and what follow-up is included.

Hire a contractor when the mosquito problem points to the building: torn or custom screens, poor-fitting doors, failed sweeps, missing closers, damaged thresholds, unsealed penetrations, clogged or misdirected gutters, poor porch or patio drainage, crawlspace moisture, leaking plumbing, or HVAC condensate problems. Pest control can reduce the population, but it cannot rebuild a door frame, correct a drainage slope, or dry out a crawlspace.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Safety, Code, and Practical Notes
Some housing codes require screens in good repair during mosquito season. For example, the International Property Maintenance Code includes requirements for insect screens on doors and windows during specified periods where local jurisdictions adopt and enforce that language. Requirements vary by city, county, and state, especially for rental properties, so landlords and property managers should check local rules.
For homeowners, the safety rule is simple: use the least risky effective method first. Remove water. Repair screens. Seal gaps. Improve drainage. Use fans. Then consider labeled pesticide treatment if needed.
Keep children and pets away from treated areas until the label or pest professional says re-entry is allowed. Cover or remove food, dishes, pet bowls, and toys before indoor treatment. Aquariums need special care because many insecticides can be hazardous to fish and aquatic life. If anyone in the home has asthma, chemical sensitivity, pregnancy concerns, or a significant medical condition, discuss that before treatment.

Use Bti only in standing water that cannot be eliminated and only according to the label. Do not use it as a substitute for fixing leaks, clogged gutters, or wet equipment pans.
Day 7: Decide Whether You Need Help
If mosquitoes are still appearing, separate the problem into two questions: are they breeding somewhere, or are they entering from outside? Call pest control for active treatment and product guidance. Call a contractor for screens, doors, drainage, crawlspace moisture, leaks, penetrations, and other building repairs.
The Bottom Line
The best way to get rid of mosquitoes inside your house is to stop treating the room as the whole problem. Mosquitoes follow water, air leaks, open doors, torn screens, damp shade, and neglected drainage. Fix those conditions and the indoor population usually drops quickly.
A good mosquito plan is not complicated: dump and scrub water every week, keep screens tight, make doors close properly, seal the small paths insects use, and treat only what remains with the right labeled product or a licensed professional. That approach costs less over time, reduces unnecessary chemical use, and leaves the house better built than it was before the mosquitoes showed up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I keep finding mosquitoes inside my house?
The most common reasons are standing water, torn screens, gaps around doors, open garage-to-house paths, unsealed utility penetrations, or damp areas such as basements and crawlspaces. If mosquitoes keep returning, look for the source instead of only spraying the room.
Can mosquitoes breed inside a house?
Yes. They can breed in small amounts of stagnant water, including plant saucers, vases, pet bowls, floor drains, sump pits, condensate pans, unused toilets, appliance trays, mop buckets, and wet crawlspaces.
What is the fastest way to get rid of mosquitoes indoors?
Remove visible adults with a vacuum or swatter, run fans where people sit or sleep, then immediately remove standing water and repair screens or door gaps. Indoor insecticide should only be used if mosquitoes remain and the product is labeled for indoor use.
Recommended Free Tools
Are indoor mosquito sprays safe around kids and pets?
Only use EPA-registered products labeled for indoor use, and follow the label exactly. Pay attention to re-entry time, ventilation, food-contact surfaces, pet bowls, toys, aquariums, and sensitive occupants. When in doubt, hire a licensed pest control professional.
How much does professional mosquito control cost in 2026?
Typical 2026 mosquito treatment pricing ranges from about $109 to $198 per visit in many cases, with mosquito exterminator services often around $105 to $260. Broader seasonal or heavy-treatment programs can range from $300 to $900 or more, depending on property size, climate, vegetation, and frequency.
When should I call pest control versus a contractor?
Call pest control for active mosquito treatment and licensed pesticide application. Call a contractor for torn or custom screens, doors that do not seal, failed sweeps, drainage problems, wet crawlspaces, leaks, clogged or misdirected gutters, and gaps around vents or utilities.
