Mountain-carved architecture is not one construction method. Some sites are rooms and façades excavated into a cliff; others are monoliths shaped by cutting away the surrounding bedrock, settlements adapted to natural formations, or buildings set on a peak rather than carved from it. These nine examples show how geology, purpose, and technique shaped very different places.
What does “carved into a mountain” mean?
The phrase describes several distinct relationships between architecture and rock. At a cliff-cut site, workers remove stone to create chambers, corridors, shrines, or façades. A monolithic building is made by cutting away the rock around a mass that remains attached to the bedrock. Other communities enlarged natural formations into dwellings or settlements. And a fortress or capital may occupy a mountain without being carved from it.
Those differences matter: a cave sanctuary, a freestanding rock-cut temple, a hillside relief, and a summit citadel present different engineering problems. The examples below range from ancient urban infrastructure to religious complexes and sculpted landscapes.

Petra was the Nabataean capital and a major caravan centre between Arabia, Egypt, and Syria-Phoenicia. UNESCO describes it as “half-built, half-carved into the rock,” a useful distinction: Petra is not just a row of façades cut into cliffs, but a city combining constructed buildings and rock-cut monuments within a landscape of passages and gorges.

The famous Khasneh, along with the Urn Tomb, Palace Tomb, Corinthian Tomb, and Deir, combines Hellenistic façade design with Nabataean rock-cut forms. The city’s practical achievement was also hydraulic. Channels, tunnels, diversion dams, cisterns, and reservoirs captured and managed seasonal rainfall in an arid setting. Petra shows that a carved city depended on infrastructure as much as monumental fronts.
Lalibela, Ethiopia: churches cut as monoliths
In a mountainous region, Lalibela’s 11 medieval churches were carved out of rock as monolithic structures. Rather than excavating only rooms into a cliff face, builders shaped churches from bedrock by cutting trenches and open spaces around the structures, leaving the buildings standing within the excavated rock landscape.
The complex is attributed to King Lalibela, who sought to create a “New Jerusalem” after Muslim conquests disrupted Christian pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Lalibela remains a place of pilgrimage and devotion, so its significance is both architectural and living religious practice.

Ellora, India: cliff-cut caves and a monolithic temple
Ellora’s 34 monasteries and temples extend for more than two kilometres along a high basalt cliff. Excavated in phases from the 6th to the 12th centuries, the complex includes Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain groups. Much of Ellora consists of spaces cut into the cliff, but its best-known monument uses a different approach.
Kailasa Temple
Ellora’s Cave 16, the Kailasa temple, is a major monolithic work. Instead of making a temple by building courses of stone, its makers removed rock around a freestanding mass, shaping the remaining basalt into a temple. The contrast between cliff-excavated caves and this subtractive, monolithic form makes Ellora especially useful for understanding the range of rock-cut construction.
Ajanta, India: sanctuaries and monasteries above a river
Ajanta’s 30 caves, including unfinished works, were excavated into a vertical cliff above the Waghora River. Five are chaityagrihas, or Buddhist sanctuaries; the others are monasteries. The work belongs to two major phases: around the 2nd to 1st centuries BCE and again during the 5th to 6th centuries CE.

Paintings and sculpture are integral to Ajanta’s architecture. The excavated rooms were not simply shelters: their religious use, imagery, and surviving artistic detail connect the built spaces to the social and devotional history of the site.

Göreme and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia, Türkiye: a carved settlement landscape
Cappadocia is not a single carved monument but a broad landscape of volcanic formations, ridges, valleys, and pinnacles adapted for living and worship. Rock-hewn sanctuaries, dwellings, troglodyte villages, and underground towns form part of this settlement tradition; monastic activity may date to the 4th century.
Churches including Tokalı, El Nazar, St. Barbara, Saklı, Elmalı, and Karanlık show the religious and artistic use of the rock formations. Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, by contrast, are underground towns. Volcanic geology helped shape a landscape in which people could excavate living and communal spaces rather than construct everything above ground.

Longmen Grottoes, China: a sculpted archive in limestone
Along about a kilometre of the Yi River, Longmen’s steep limestone cliffs contain more than 2,300 caves and niches. UNESCO records almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, more than 60 stupas, and 2,800 inscriptions. The most intensive carving took place from the late 5th to the mid-8th century, with major works under the Northern Wei and Tang dynasties.
Longmen is not defined only by enclosed cave rooms. Its niches, statues, and inscriptions turn the cliff into an extensive religious and artistic archive, with carved works integrated into the river landscape.

Yungang comprises 252 caves and niches and 51,000 statues across a carved area of 18,000 square metres. The work was carried out from the mid-5th to early-6th century CE under the Northern Wei dynasty. UNESCO highlights the synthesis of Buddhist art from South and Central Asia with Chinese traditions.

The repeated cave-and-statue format gives Yungang a different scale and character from Petra’s urban fabric or Lalibela’s monolithic churches. Here, the carved cliff is a setting for a large body of Buddhist sculpture.
Dazu Rock Carvings, China: hillside reliefs rather than cave buildings
Dazu’s five clusters of hillside carvings date from the 9th to 13th centuries. The largest cluster, Beishan, extends for about 300 metres and includes more than 10,000 carvings. The imagery combines Tantric Buddhist and Taoist themes, alongside secular material; the wider site is notable for a synthesis of Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism.
Dazu is best understood as a sculpted hillside landscape, not as a complex of inhabited cave buildings. Many of its works are reliefs and figures set into cliff faces, making it a useful reminder that rock-cut heritage can be open-air sculpture as well as excavated architecture.
Sigiriya, Sri Lanka: a summit citadel, not a wholly carved building
Sigiriya’s ancient capital occupied the steep slopes and summit of a granite peak about 180 metres high. Galleries and stairways lead upward from the mouth of a gigantic lion built of brick and plaster. The peak shapes the citadel’s setting and approach, but the site should not be described as an entire complex carved from the mountain: it is a capital on a summit, not a wholly rock-cut building.

These sites span different periods and traditions: Cappadocian monastic activity may begin as early as the 4th century; Ajanta’s two main phases reach from the BCE centuries into the 6th century CE; and the Chinese grotto sites represent works made across multiple dynasties and centuries. Their geology also matters. Basalt at Ellora, limestone at Longmen, and volcanic formations in Cappadocia shaped both the material available and the forms people could excavate.
