A combination square can check and mark 90° and 45° lines, gauge offsets, measure depth and height, find the center of round stock, and make quick level checks. For reliable layout, seat the head firmly against a clean reference edge and lock it before marking.
What a combination square does
A combination square pairs a graduated rule, often called the blade, with a movable head. The standard head has a 90° face and a 45° face; many models also include a spirit-level vial and a small scriber. Depending on its heads and configuration, the tool can serve as a try square, miter square, depth or height gage, marking gage, level, plumb check and measuring rule. Starrett describes these combination-square functions, while Johnson outlines the tool’s main parts and use.
Eight ways to use a combination square
1. Check and mark 90° lines
Set the head at the required measurement on the rule, then press its 90° face—the anvil—flat against the stock’s reference edge. Draw along the rule to lay out a square cut line, or use the same setup to check whether an existing corner is square. Keep the head seated as you mark; a gap or rocking contact can throw off the line. IRWIN’s combination-square description and Johnson’s guide show the tool used for square layout.
2. Lay out or check 45° miters
Use the head’s 45° shoulder as a miter square to mark a miter cut or check an existing miter joint. Seat the shoulder fully against the reference edge before drawing the line. The 45° face provides the layout angle; the rule can position that line at the required distance from the edge. Starrett identifies the 45-degree miter function.

3. Mark repeated offsets like a marking gauge
Slide the head to the desired distance from the rule’s edge and lock it. Hold the head against the stock edge, then run it along the work while using the scriber or another suitable marking point. The fixed setting helps keep a series of marks at the same offset. Use the scriber only on surfaces where a scribed line is appropriate; it can leave a permanent mark. The tool’s marking-gage role is described by Starrett and IRWIN.
4. Measure the depth of a recess or hole
Set the rule’s projection so the head can rest on the surrounding reference surface. Place the head flat across that surface and lower the rule into the recess or hole; read the scale at the surface. This works where the opening and the tool’s geometry allow the rule to reach the bottom while the head remains supported. Combination squares are documented as depth gages by Starrett and IRWIN.

5. Measure or transfer a height
Use the sliding rule and head to compare the height of a step, shoulder or setup with the graduated scale. You can then set the same dimension on another piece and transfer the measurement. Keep the head’s reference face against a consistent baseline so the compared measurements share the same starting point. This requires a center head that fits the rule; it is not a function of the standard head alone. Fit the center head, place its two reference faces against the round stock, and mark along the rule edge. That edge bisects the circle to give a centerline for drilling or layout. A second line made after rotating the stock can help locate the center point where the lines cross. Starrett documents center-finding use for compatible sets.

7. Make quick level and plumb checks
If the head has a vial, use it for a quick indication of level or plumb. Treat the reading as an approximate check; use a dedicated level when the installation’s required tolerance makes accuracy critical. Vials are a feature on many—not all—combination squares, as shown in Johnson’s component overview.
8. Measure with the rule or use it as a straightedge
The graduated rule measures dimensions directly. On sets designed to allow it, the rule can also be separated from the head and used as a straightedge. Check that the blade is straight and suitable for the task before relying on it to assess a surface; not every combination-square rule or set is specified for precision straightedge use. Check the square before precision layout
A combination square can produce consistently wrong marks if its head is out of square, loose or damaged. Johnson’s check is to place the anvil against a straight edge and draw a line, then flip the square and draw a second line close to the first. If the lines diverge, the square needs attention before fine layout. Follow the illustrated procedure in Johnson’s combination-square guide.
- Clean the stock’s reference edge and the square’s contact face so debris cannot hold the head away from the work.
- Set the rule to the required position and tighten the lock.
- Seat the head flat against the reference edge without rocking or forcing it.
- Check the square by drawing, flipping and comparing lines as described above; do not use a loose or damaged head for precision work.

- Head accuracy and rigidity: the head should seat securely and hold its position when locked.
- Rule length and graduations: choose a useful blade length and imperial, metric or dual graduations for your measurements.
- Compatible heads: a center head is needed to find the center of round stock; a protractor head adds angle-layout options.
- Lock and scriber: a dependable lock helps preserve repeat offsets, and a scriber is useful when the material and marking method suit it.
- Readability and corrosion resistance: clear graduations and a blade that withstands the jobsite environment make measurements easier to maintain.
- Vial: confirm one is included if quick level or plumb checks matter to your work.
Specialized versions can add features for particular trades. For example, Klein’s electrician-oriented combination square includes an etched conduit-layout template and magnets for electrical-box work. These additions are useful for that application, but they do not replace the basic checks of head fit, graduations and locking action.
