If TV dialogue is too quiet, then music, action or effects suddenly sound much louder, do not start by turning up the volume. First try to reduce the gap between speech and the rest of the soundtrack. Work through these fixes in order, changing one device or setting at a time; menu names and availability vary by TV, app, streaming box and sound system.
Quick order: enable dialogue enhancement; reduce bass and exaggerated processing; try night mode or volume leveling; test stereo or PCM if surround sounds wrong; then reposition or upgrade the speakers.
First, identify what kind of problem you have
“Murky dialogue” can describe several different problems, and each points to a different fix:
- Speech is quiet but effects are loud: the soundtrack’s dynamic range or channel balance may be the issue.
- Voices sound muffled or boomy: excess bass, speaker placement or a heavily processed sound mode may be masking speech.
- Only one app or movie is affected: the title’s mix, app or audio-format handling may be responsible. Compare another app, input or program before blaming the TV.
- Voices sound hollow or disappear while other sounds remain: check the center speaker, audio decoding, connections and channel settings.
- All audio is distorted or unusually quiet: this may be a hardware or connection problem, not an equalizer setting.
For a useful comparison, play a dialogue-heavy stereo program and a known surround-sound title, then try a second app or input. Also identify where sound is being processed: TV speakers, a soundbar, an AV receiver, or a streaming box, cable box, game console or Blu-ray player. More than one device may have audio controls. Stacking enhancements across them can make speech thin, metallic or unnatural.

1. Turn on dialogue or speech enhancement
Search the audio menus for names such as Dialogue Enhancement, Speech Clarity, Voice Enhancement, Clear Voice, Voice Zoom, Enhance Dialogue, Voice Isolation or Center Channel Level. These features aim to make speech more prominent relative to music and effects. They do not all work the same way: depending on the product, a feature may use equalization, compression, other processing or a combination.
On a compatible Roku TV, start playback, press the Star button on the remote, open the sound or audio options, and select Dialog enhancement or the equivalent speech setting. Roku notes that the label and availability can vary by model, software, app and connected audio device; some options may not appear in every setup. On Apple TV 4K, while content is playing, open the playback controls and audio options. Choose Enhance Dialogue or, where supported, Enhance More. Apple describes Enhance as making dialogue more prominent with limited impact on the original mix; Enhance More makes speech more prominent but may alter the mix more noticeably. Apple also documents Voice Isolation, which may require enabling it in Accessibility settings. Availability depends on the Apple TV model, tvOS version, app, program and connected audio equipment. Use the lowest level that helps. Test the same scene with the feature off and on, and turn off other speech-processing modes while testing. If voices become sharp, metallic or detached from the music, reduce the setting or switch it back off.
2. Reduce bass and excessive sound processing
When voices are boomy or muffled, try reducing the subwoofer level or bass before boosting treble. Also test with bass boost, virtual surround, cinema effects or other spatial modes disabled. A neutral preset such as Standard, Direct, Stereo or Pure can help you determine whether a more elaborate sound mode is getting in the way. Preset names and their effects vary, so judge by listening rather than assuming a mode is neutral.
A large treble boost is not the best first move. More treble can make consonants clearer, but it can also make voices harsh, sibilant or tiring. If your soundbar or receiver has a manual center-channel control, try a small increase—one or two steps—then replay the same scene. Make only one adjustment at a time and note the original setting so you can undo changes.

Dialogue enhancement can help, but results vary by soundbar and may come at the expense of natural voice tone, music balance or surround immersion. Use the lowest effective processing level; RTINGS’ soundbar testing notes that enhancement can sound unnatural on some models.

If explosions, music peaks or other loud moments force you to keep adjusting the remote, try Night mode, Auto Volume, Volume Leveling or a similarly named setting. These modes reduce differences between quiet and loud sounds. That can make speech easier to follow at a more consistent listening level, especially late at night or in a shared home.
Night mode is not necessarily a dialogue enhancer: it narrows volume differences rather than repairing a missing center channel or a faulty connection. It also reduces the impact of loud effects, so it may be less satisfying for cinematic listening. Roku explains its volume modes and night-mode behavior and notes that some modes can convert surround content to stereo. If you use a soundbar or receiver and want to preserve the original surround format, check the mode’s effect and turn it off if necessary. Roku’s sound-mode guide covers its available controls.

4. Test stereo or PCM if surround dialogue sounds wrong
Surround audio passes through a chain: the source device, TV, HDMI connection and soundbar or receiver must handle the format correctly. A mismatch involving Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, DTS or multichannel PCM can produce odd results. Atmos itself is not inherently the cause; a particular mix, setting or decoding path may be.
If voices are clear in stereo but weak in surround, temporarily test stereo or PCM output. Depending on your setup, you can also compare Dolby Digital with Atmos, try the TV’s internal speakers, or connect the source directly to the soundbar if that connection is supported. This is a diagnostic test, not a universal fix: stereo may improve speech while giving up surround effects.
- Play the same scene and note the current audio format if the device shows it.
- Change only the output format or listening mode.
- Replay the scene and compare dialogue.
- If stereo fixes it, investigate the format and connection chain rather than assuming the TV speakers need replacing. If it does not, restore the original format and continue troubleshooting.
Check that the soundbar is connected to the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port when required, HDMI plugs are seated, and audio is not being sent to incompatible outputs at once. Confirm the receiver’s center speaker is connected and correctly assigned, the soundbar’s center grille is not blocked, and balance or individual channel levels have not been changed accidentally. Menu names and supported formats vary by model, so consult the manuals for the devices in your chain. Roku specifically warns that some volume modes can convert surround to stereo; see its volume-mode guidance.

5. Improve speaker placement—or add a center-focused soundbar
Built-in TV speakers have little room to work and may fire downward or backward. If you already use a soundbar or center speaker, put it directly below the screen, leave its front grille unobstructed, and avoid enclosing it in a cabinet. Place a separate center speaker as close to the screen as practical, not deep in a closed shelf. If bass is boomy, moving the subwoofer may help keep low frequencies from masking voices.
If built-in speakers still make speech hard to follow, a soundbar with a dedicated center channel is a more targeted upgrade than a small Bluetooth speaker. Depending on the model, useful features include dialogue enhancement, night mode, adjustable center level and HDMI ARC/eARC. Verify that the bar works with your TV and source formats, fits below the screen without blocking the picture or infrared sensor, and can be connected using ports your devices support. Optical connections may not carry every format supported by HDMI ARC/eARC.
More speakers or a premium Atmos system do not guarantee clearer dialogue. A larger, bass-heavy or poorly calibrated system can make a difficult mix harder to follow, and a subwoofer may disturb neighbors. Consider a receiver and separate center speaker if you want a larger home-theater system and are prepared for more setup—not just because one movie is hard to hear.

- Only one app or title sounds bad: compare another title, app and input. If the problem follows one program, avoid buying hardware before checking its audio track or app settings.
- Only a surround or Atmos track sounds bad: test stereo or PCM, then check the source output, TV pass-through settings and soundbar or receiver decoding.
- You hear music and effects but dialogue is almost absent: inspect the center channel and its level, connection and assignment. A center-channel fault can leave other sounds working.
- The soundbar is connected by Bluetooth: compare a supported wired connection, such as HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, if available. Bluetooth may add another compatibility or delay variable; the right connection depends on your devices and desired format.
- Several enhancements are enabled: turn them off, return to a neutral mode and test again. Add back only one feature at a time.
- Audio is distorted or quiet on every source: check cables, output settings and speaker connections. If the fault persists across sources and settings, the system may need service.
- Settings and speakers still are not enough: subtitles are a practical accessibility option. Headphones or a personal listening device may also help when shared-room volume is a concern. If difficulty hearing extends beyond television, consider discussing it with a qualified hearing professional.
Before experimenting, record or photograph the original settings. Keep a neutral preset for ordinary viewing, then switch on dialogue enhancement or night mode only when a particular program or situation calls for it.
