Purple leaves can be normal for a plant variety, a response to light or cold, or a sign of stress—including possible phosphorus deficiency. The color alone cannot tell you which. Identify the plant, note which leaves are affected and check recent growing conditions before changing fertilizer.
1. Purple foliage may be normal for the plant
Some plants and varieties naturally produce purple or reddish leaves, and young foliage may be more colorful than mature leaves. Compare the affected growth with the expected appearance of that plant and variety before treating the color as a problem. 2. Light, cold, or leaf age can bring out pigments
Plants produce anthocyanins, pigments that can make leaves look red, blue, or purple. Bright light may intensify these colors, while cold exposure and normal aging can also be associated with color changes in some plants. If the plant otherwise looks healthy and the color fits its variety or the season, a change in care may not be needed. These responses vary by species; they are not a universal explanation for every purple leaf. Washington State University Extension

Cold soil can restrict phosphorus uptake by young roots, even when the soil contains phosphorus. Wet conditions and restricted root development can also stress seedlings and produce temporary purpling. Transplant shock or a sharp temperature change may look like phosphorus deficiency, particularly in tomatoes. As conditions improve, symptoms may ease. University of Maryland Extension, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, and University of Connecticut Extension describe these stress-related lookalikes.

Check what changed recently
- Has the plant been exposed to cold soil or a sudden temperature change?
- Has the soil stayed wet, or do the roots appear restricted?
- Did the plant recently move, get transplanted, or begin growing in a new location?
4. Phosphorus deficiency is possible—but color is not proof
Phosphorus deficiency becomes more plausible when older leaves turn dark green, reddish-purple, or violet and the plant also has small leaves, stunted growth, or reduced vigor. Purple coloring by itself does not show that the soil lacks phosphorus: cold conditions or root problems can prevent a plant from taking up phosphorus that is present. 5. Injury or disease may be involved
Damage and pathogen attack can induce anthocyanin pigments in some plants. Color appearing in patches may warrant a closer look at the affected tissue and the plant as a whole, but purple patches alone do not identify a disease. How to narrow down the cause
- Identify the plant and variety. Check whether purple foliage is normal for the plant or limited to young leaves.
- Look at which leaves changed. Note whether the color is on older leaves, new growth, or scattered patches.
- Check for other symptoms. Small leaves, stunted growth, or weak vigor make a nutrient problem more plausible than color alone.
- Review recent conditions. Consider cold, wet soil, restricted roots, transplanting, or a major temperature change.
- Test before adding phosphorus. Soil testing, and in some cases plant-tissue testing, can help distinguish a deficiency from an uptake problem. Follow local extension guidance and product labels.
Testing options do not all measure the same things. A home soil kit may be useful as a screening aid, but its capabilities vary; it should not be assumed to measure every relevant nutrient or replace laboratory soil or plant-tissue analysis. For tomato symptoms, the University of Connecticut Extension recommends confirmation with a soil or tissue test. For soybeans, NC State Extension cautions that visual symptoms can mislead and that cold, wet soil may cause temporary symptoms even when soil phosphorus is adequate.
Should you add phosphorus fertilizer?
Do not add phosphorus solely because leaves are purple. Washington State University Extension advises testing before phosphorus application, and the UC Statewide IPM Program says phosphorus additions are rarely beneficial for most California landscape plants. These recommendations have different scopes: follow local guidance for your plant and location.

If a nutrient deficiency is observed in vegetable seedlings, University of Maryland Extension discusses balanced soluble fertilizer as an option. That advice is specific to its vegetable-plant guidance, not a blanket recommendation for every plant with purple leaves. University of Maryland Extension
