5 Outdoor Security Cameras Featured in Consumer Reports Recommendations

For an outdoor camera, the right choice depends as much on power, storage and installation as it does on image quality. The five models below were selected by BGR from cameras recommended by Consumer Reports (CR); they are not CR’s official five-camera ranking. CR’s 2025 article covers a larger, alphabetically listed group of cameras it tested. Prices and cloud-plan terms can change, so treat the figures below as reported by BGR on February 23, 2026—not as verified current offers.

For a construction-minded buyer, start with the mounting location: Is there a suitable outlet or cable route? Will the camera have dependable Wi-Fi or Ethernet? Can it be positioned to capture faces rather than just movement? Those decisions often matter more than a headline resolution.

At a glance

Camera Best suited to Power Local recording Resolution Reported price Main compromise
Tapo C310 Budget wired coverage Wired microSD card slot 1296p $33 Needs power; lower resolution than the higher-end choices
Blink Mini 2 Low-cost coverage near an outlet Wired; outdoor adapter required outdoors Sync Module and storage media required 1080p $40 Outdoor hardware and local-storage accessories add cost
Arlo Essential Security Camera 2K (VMC3050) Flexible battery-powered placement Rechargeable battery No local option identified in the cited coverage 2K $100 Cloud service is central to recording and advanced features
Tapo ColorPro C325WB Wired installation with local storage Wired microSD card slot 1520p, as reported by BGR Not stated in the cited article Needs a power route and a separately purchased card
Eufy SoloCam S340 Solar-assisted coverage and tracking Rechargeable battery with included solar panel in the cited configuration 8GB built-in storage 3K wide-angle and 2K telephoto $200 Higher upfront cost; solar performance and storage capacity depend on conditions and use

Prices are historical figures reported in BGR’s February 23, 2026 article. BGR’s list and price reporting are separate from CR’s testing. Product specifications should also be checked against current manufacturer pages before purchase.

What “according to Consumer Reports” means here

CR says its 2025 outdoor-camera coverage draws on testing of more than 100 security cameras. Its recommendations include products from Arlo, Blink, Eufy, Lorex, Ring, TP-Link/Tapo and Wyze; the accessible list is alphabetical, not a ranked top 10. CR’s article is therefore useful context, but it should not be confused with the five-model selection in this guide.

BGR selected these five models from CR-recommended cameras and considered factors including availability and privacy history. BGR reports category-level CR results—such as video quality, response time or data security—rather than establishing that every model is the best overall. A strong result in one category does not settle questions about subscriptions, installation or privacy practices.

1. Tapo C310: best budget wired camera with local storage

Best for: A cost-conscious installation where continuous power is available and a microSD card is preferable to a required cloud plan.

BGR reported a $33 price, 1296p video, IP66 weather resistance, two-way audio, motion detection and activity zones. The camera has a microSD slot and supports network connectivity by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, according to the Tapo product page. BGR says CR rated its video quality and response time strongly, while noting a less favorable privacy assessment than its data-security results. No numerical CR scores are stated here.

The C310 needs wired power; it is not a battery camera. Plan the outlet, cable route and weather protection before mounting it. The IP66 rating describes dust and water-resistance testing, not immunity to flooding, pressure washing, extreme temperatures, vandalism or a poorly sealed cable entry.

Local recording can reduce dependence on a subscription, but the card is an extra purchase, and footage stored only on the camera may be lost if the camera is damaged or stolen. Tapo also offers cloud service; BGR reported a starting price of $3.49 per month at the time of its article. Confirm current plan terms directly with Tapo Care.

Choose it for basic wired coverage with local recording. Skip it if you need battery power, a built-in spotlight, or especially strong privacy positioning.

The Mini 2 records at 1080p and includes two-way audio, motion detection and a spotlight. BGR reported a $40 camera price and strong CR results for video quality, response time and data security. But the Mini 2 has no built-in battery and is primarily an indoor camera: outdoor deployment requires Blink’s weather-resistant power adapter. BGR describes the camera-and-adapter setup as IP65-rated and reports an adapter cable of roughly 13 feet (4 metres). Check the manufacturer’s current product information and installation requirements before using it outdoors.

That distinction changes the real installation cost. The camera still needs continuous power, an appropriate outdoor outlet or safely routed cable, and a mounting position within reach. An adapter’s weather resistance does not make every outlet, extension cable or cable connection suitable for exposure.

For local recording, BGR says buyers need a compatible Sync Module and storage media; cloud recording is the other route. The added hardware can make a nominally inexpensive camera less inexpensive in practice. BGR reported a Blink plan with 60-day video history and features such as person detection, subject to the plan and terms in effect then. Check current options at Blink’s subscription page.

Choose it when a low camera price and nearby power are priorities. Skip it for a remote corner without power or dependable Wi-Fi, or if you want battery operation without extra storage hardware.

3. Arlo Essential Security Camera 2K (VMC3050): best for flexible battery placement

Best for: A renter or homeowner who wants to avoid running a power cable to the camera and accepts a cloud-oriented setup.

  • 2K Resolution, Day and Night Clarity: Capture every event that occurs around your home in 3MP resolution. More than just daytime, 4 LED lights increase the light source by 100% compared to 2 LED lights, allowing more to be seen for excellent color night vision.

This battery-powered model records in 2K and includes a spotlight and wide field of view. BGR reported strong CR results in video quality, response time and data security, and a $100 price. It also cited up to four months of battery life; treat that as a reported estimate, not a promise. Motion frequency, live viewing, temperature, signal quality and settings all affect how often a battery camera needs charging.

The cited coverage identifies no local-storage option for this model. That makes Arlo’s subscription particularly relevant if you want recorded history and advanced detections. BGR reported plans starting at $10 a month for one camera, with 60-day video history and person and vehicle detection. Those are February 2026 figures; check current U.S. pricing, plan features and camera limits at Arlo Secure before committing.

A battery removes the need for a nearby outlet, not the need for reliable Wi-Fi, periodic charging or a secure mount. BGR’s reported CR response-time result is a test category, not a guarantee that alerts will arrive instantly over every home network.

Choose it if placement flexibility is worth the subscription and charging trade-offs. Skip it if you require local recording or do not want recurring cloud costs.

4. Tapo ColorPro C325WB: best wired choice for local storage and low-light priorities

Best for: A fixed installation with accessible power where local recording, network flexibility and low-light performance matter.

BGR reports 1520p video, IP66 weather resistance, a wide-angle lens, motion detection and activity zones. The camera supports Wi-Fi and Ethernet and has a microSD slot, according to Tapo’s product page. BGR says CR rated its video quality, response time and data security strongly. Manufacturer claims about image sensing or low-light performance should not be mistaken for independent CR findings.

Flexible expansion, your choice: Insert a TF card (supports up to 128GB, not included) for longer local recording, or subscribe to cloud service (paid plan required) for automatic backup.

The C325WB requires wired power; it is not suitable for a location where no safe power route exists. Ethernet can be an advantage where outdoor Wi-Fi is weak, but it also requires a suitable cable route. BGR says its two lights serve alarm functions rather than acting as a conventional spotlight, so do not choose it on the assumption it will illuminate a person like a floodlight.

A microSD card enables local recording without making a cloud plan mandatory; the card is an extra cost. BGR reported Tapo cloud service starting at $3.50 per month, with 30-day history and support for up to 10 cameras in the plan described. Verify current terms at Tapo Care.

Choose it for a wired, local-storage setup with Ethernet as an option. Skip it if running power or network cable is impractical.

5. Eufy SoloCam S340: best solar-assisted package for broader coverage and tracking

Best for: A location without convenient wired power that gets enough sunlight for useful solar charging, and where a two-camera view and tracking features are valuable.

The S340 combines a wide-angle 3K camera with a 2K telephoto camera; BGR reports up to 8× zoom, human and vehicle detection, motion tracking, a spotlight and 8GB of built-in storage. The configuration discussed includes a solar panel and rechargeable battery. Solar assistance is not a guarantee of maintenance-free use: shade, panel angle, weather, winter daylight and activity levels affect charging.

BGR reported a $200 price and excellent CR video-quality performance. Its built-in storage and battery-plus-solar design make it the most feature-rich wire-free option in this group, but 8GB may not suit a high-traffic location if clips accumulate quickly. Eufy also offers cloud service; BGR reported a starting price of $4 per month for one camera at the time. Check current U.S. terms at Eufy’s cloud page.

Privacy deserves separate consideration from image quality. BGR says CR highlighted historical concerns involving unencrypted facial-recognition data and thumbnails in earlier Eufy practices, and reports that the issue was subsequently fixed. That history is not proof that all current data handling is risk-free. Review Eufy’s current privacy disclosures and decide whether its cloud-connected ecosystem fits your expectations. The manufacturer’s S340 page is the place to confirm current specifications and included accessories.

Choose it when solar exposure is dependable and flexible coverage is worth the higher upfront cost. Skip it if the site is shaded, you expect unlimited local retention, or the privacy history makes the ecosystem unsuitable for you.

Compare the cost beyond the camera

The reported camera prices show only the first part of ownership. As a simple subscription illustration, a $40 Blink Mini 2 plus a $10-a-month plan would total $160 after one year and $400 after three years, before the outdoor adapter, tax or other accessories. An Arlo camera at the reported $100 price plus the reported $10 monthly plan would total $220 after one year and $460 after three years, before tax or charging-related costs. These calculations use BGR’s February 2026 figures; they are not current quotes, and plan eligibility or prices may have changed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For local-storage models, add the cost of a compatible card; for Blink, add the required Sync Module and storage media. For wired cameras, installation materials or paid labour may outweigh the camera price if the location lacks an appropriate power source. A camera that records locally can avoid a mandatory cloud plan, but local-only footage is not off-site backup.

  • Lowest reported upfront price: Tapo C310 at $33, if power is already available.
  • Low-cost outlet-powered smart camera: Blink Mini 2 at $40 before its outdoor adapter and local-storage hardware.
  • Battery placement: Arlo Essential 2K, with cloud costs and charging to include.
  • Wired local-storage choice: Tapo C325WB; card and installation costs apply.
  • Solar-assisted, feature-rich choice: Eufy SoloCam S340, at the highest reported price in this group.

Subscription prices, history length, detection features and per-camera limits can change. Confirm whether a plan is required for recording or only for advanced features, whether pricing is per camera or account, and whether a trial converts to a paid plan. Official plan pages: Blink, Arlo, Tapo and Eufy.

What to check before mounting an outdoor camera

  1. Power and cable route: Decide whether a continuously powered camera is practical. Use suitable outdoor-rated components and protect cable entries; do not assume an IP-rated camera makes an ordinary outlet or connection weatherproof. If installation requires new exterior wiring, assess the job and local requirements before buying.
  2. Wi-Fi or Ethernet at the mounting point: Test signal where the camera will sit, not just inside the house. Weak connections can delay alerts and make battery cameras reconnect more often. Ethernet on the Tapo models may help where a cable route is feasible.
  3. View and identification: A wide view covers more ground but makes faces and license plates smaller. Mount and angle the camera to capture faces on an approach, not only the tops of heads. Avoid pointing into direct sun, sunsets or reflective surfaces. Digital zoom cannot recover detail that was never captured.
  4. Night lighting and neighbours: A spotlight can improve colour visibility but may attract attention or disturb neighbours. Infrared may be preferable for discreet coverage. Check the actual camera’s lighting features rather than assuming every model has a conventional spotlight.
  5. Zones and alert behaviour: Use activity zones around gates, paths and doors. If the camera detects motion but misses a person, review mounting height, backlighting, field of view and zone boundaries. If alerts are late, check Wi-Fi, phone notification settings, battery-saving behaviour and cloud-service conditions.
  6. Storage and evidence resilience: Confirm card compatibility and capacity with the manufacturer. Local recording avoids some recurring costs, but a stolen or damaged camera can take its footage with it. Decide whether you also need an off-site copy.
  7. Weather and mounting security: Check the product’s operating conditions and protect connections from water ingress. IP65 or IP66 does not mean flood-proof, pressure-washer-proof or vandal-proof, and does not guarantee performance in every temperature or coastal environment.
  8. Battery or solar maintenance: Expect battery performance to vary with cold, traffic, live viewing, settings and signal quality. For solar, choose a panel position with suitable sun exposure; shade and short winter days can leave a camera needing manual charging.

Finally, remember that resolution is only one part of useful footage. Lens quality, exposure, compression, motion blur, lighting, field of view and placement affect whether a clip actually helps identify someone. CR’s category testing can inform a choice, but it cannot guarantee end-to-end notification speed or usable footage at a particular property.

Which one should you pick?

Choose the Tapo C310 for the lowest reported camera price and basic wired local recording; the Blink Mini 2 for a low-cost smart camera where an outlet is close; the Arlo Essential 2K for flexible battery placement if cloud dependence is acceptable; the Tapo C325WB for wired local recording with Ethernet as an option; or the Eufy SoloCam S340 for solar-assisted placement, dual-camera coverage and tracking where sunlight and its privacy trade-offs are acceptable. None is the universal winner: choose around the power route, storage policy, network and view the site can actually support.
