For most woodworkers who want premium consumer noise cancellation, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is the strongest all-round pick; for a Bluetooth headset intended as hearing protection, choose an exact-model, NRR-labeled earmuff such as the documented 3M WorkTunes Wireless. Those are different jobs: active noise cancellation (ANC) can make steady background noise sound quieter, but it does not by itself make consumer headphones hearing protectors. If your shop noise is hazardous, start with properly fitted, rated hearing protection—not a headphone’s ANC claims.
This guide compares five options while separating consumer listening features from hearing-protection ratings. Fit, eyewear, dust, battery behavior, and the need to hear alarms or coworkers matter as much as sound quality in a woodshop.
Quick comparison
| Product | Best for | ANC | Published NRR in cited material? | Battery claim | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Best overall consumer ANC | Yes | Not listed | Up to 30 hours with ANC on; 40 with it off | Not a substitute for rated hearing protection |
| Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) | Comfort-first premium alternative | Yes | Not listed | Up to 30 hours; 23 with Immersive Audio | Comfort and seal vary by wearer and PPE |
| Apple AirPods Max 2 | Apple-device users | Yes | Not listed | Up to 20 hours with ANC on | Heavy, expensive, and not an NRR-rated protector |
| 3M WorkTunes Wireless | Bluetooth audio with jobsite-style protection | Passive earmuff attenuation; do not assume adaptive ANC | 25 dB(A) for the specific model documented in its manual | Check the exact model documentation | WorkTunes variants differ; verify model and label |
| JBL Tour One M3 | Premium consumer ANC alternative | Yes | Not established in the cited material | Verify current official specification | Confirm exact U.S. model and current specifications before buying |
Battery figures are manufacturer “up to” claims, not guarantees of runtime in every setting. Prices change; the cited U.S. pages showed Sony at $399.99, Bose pages with conflicting $399 and $449 signals, and AirPods Max 2 at $549. Treat these as dated price observations, not guaranteed current prices.
First, the safety distinction: ANC is not an NRR
ANC uses microphones and processing to reduce the sound a listener perceives, particularly steady, lower-frequency background noise. That is not the same as a tested and labeled Noise Reduction Rating (NRR). CDC/NIOSH says headphones or earbuds with noise-cancellation technology should not be considered hearing protection unless they are labeled with an NRR. OSHA also distinguishes passive and active noise-canceling products and notes that only some products with both features carry NRR values appropriate for workplace use. See CDC/NIOSH hearing-protection guidance and OSHA’s interpretation on noise-canceling headphones.
#1 Best Overall
- Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling: 2 internal and 2 external mics work in tandem to detect external noise and effectively reduce up to 90% of it, no matter in trains or offices.
- Immerse Yourself in Detailed Audio: The noise cancelling headphones have oversized 40mm dynamic drivers that produce detailed sound and thumping beats with BassUp technology for your every travel, commuting and gaming. Compatible with Hi-Res certified audio via the AUX cable for more detail.
- 40-Hour Long Battery Life and Fast Charging: With 40 hours of battery life with ANC on and 60 hours in normal mode, you can commute in peace with your Bluetooth headphones without thinking about recharging. Fast charge for 5 mins to get an extra 4 hours of music listening for daily users.
- Dual-Connections: Connect to two devices simultaneously with Bluetooth 5.0 and instantly switch between them. Whether you're working on your laptop, or need to take a phone call, audio from your Bluetooth headphones will automatically play from the device you need to hear from.
- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
A quieter subjective impression does not prove that your ears are receiving a safe sound level. Do not convert an ANC score, battery life, or price into an NRR. Consumer ANC may also be less dependable against abrupt, sharp, or impulse sounds than against a steady hum. Playing music to overcome a machine can add sound exposure and mask warnings or changes in how a tool is running.
Woodworking noise can be substantial. OSHA’s examples include a drill press at 92 dBA for six hours, a shop vacuum at 95 dBA for four hours, a planer at 102 dBA for 1.5 hours, a circular saw at 105 dBA for one hour, and a nail gun at 115 dBA for 15 minutes. These are representative examples, not measurements for every machine or shop; source, distance, maintenance, material, room acoustics, and time all matter. Consult OSHA’s woodworking hazard guide and its occupational noise guidance.
For hazardous exposure, use properly fitted hearing protectors labeled for that purpose. NIOSH recommends double protection—earplugs plus earmuffs—for exposures at or above 100 dBA or for impulse noise. The combined protection is not a simple addition of the two printed NRR numbers. Fit and use determine real-world performance; NIOSH identifies individual fit testing as the best way to check how much protection a worker is actually receiving.

1. Sony WH-1000XM6: best overall consumer ANC
Best for: Woodworkers who want one premium set for a shop with appropriate separate protection, plus travel, commuting, office use, and calls.
Sony lists the WH-1000XM6 as an over-ear, closed-back Bluetooth 5.3 headphone with multipoint, SBC/AAC/LDAC/LC3 codec support, an adaptive noise-canceling optimizer, ambient sound mode, and atmospheric-pressure optimization. Sony’s specifications give approximately 8.96 ounces of weight and up to 30 hours with noise canceling on or 40 hours with it off. Passive operation and a detachable cable with a stereo mini-jack input are listed as well. See Sony’s specifications and U.S. product page.
Rank #2
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
The combination of ANC, long claimed runtime, multipoint, and wired fallback makes it a versatile consumer headset. Sony’s listed specifications do not establish an NRR, however. Use rated hearing protection when the exposure requires it; wired or passive playback is a convenience, not proof of hearing protection.
Shop checks: Try it with your actual safety glasses, respirator, and face shield. The cushion may not seal around eyewear arms, and a gap can undermine passive isolation. Consumer headphones may also be a poor choice for rough, dusty work. Skip it as your sole protection around a saw, planer, nail gun, or other hazardous source.

2. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen): best comfort-first alternative
Best for: Buyers who prioritize a comfortable premium ANC fit for long listening sessions and want an alternative to Sony.
Bose lists CustomTune, adjustable EQ in its app, Bose Immersive Audio, Cinema Mode, and up to 30 hours of battery life, or 23 hours with Immersive Audio enabled. Bose describes the model as having its best noise cancellation. See the Bose product page and owner’s guide.
Comfort is personal: head shape, clamp preference, heat, glasses, and the rest of your PPE affect how well a headset works for a particular person. Immersive features are optional listening features, not safety features, and reduce the stated battery life. Bose’s noise-cancellation claims do not establish an NRR. Check the exact package and manual for cable and passive-use details if those matter to you.

3. Apple AirPods Max 2: best for an Apple-centric shop
Best for: People already using Apple devices who value Apple-specific listening and awareness features and accept the weight and price.
Apple introduced AirPods Max 2 in 2026. Its specifications list 13.6 ounces (386.2 grams), Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C charging, up to 20 hours of listening with ANC enabled, H2 chips in both ear cups, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Conversation Awareness, Personalized Volume, and Loud Sound Reduction. Apple says USB-C supports lossless and low-latency audio under its stated conditions. See Apple’s support information, technical specifications, and U.S. store page.
Its awareness features may help a listener hear surrounding sound in situations where that is appropriate, but they do not turn the headphones into hearing protection. Loud Sound Reduction is not an NRR. Apple notes that functionality may be limited with non-Apple devices, making this a less natural choice for a mixed-device shop. The listed weight is a meaningful trade-off for long wear, and the aluminum and fabric construction and high price may be unattractive in a dusty, abrasive workshop.
Shop checks: Test the seal with glasses and other PPE, and keep the headset out of dusty or impact-prone areas. If you need a rated protector, choose one independently of the Apple features.

4. 3M WorkTunes Wireless: best hearing-protection-oriented Bluetooth earmuff
Best for: Buyers who put a jobsite-style earmuff and a documented attenuation rating ahead of premium ANC, refined music playback, or sophisticated app features.
A manual for a specified 3M WorkTunes Wireless model lists an NRR of 25 dB(A) and explains that the rating estimates reduction under laboratory conditions; actual protection depends on fit and use. See the manual for that specific model. This is the clearest hearing-protection-oriented pick in this lineup, but the rating must not be applied to every product carrying the WorkTunes name.
Before buying, match the model number on the earmuff, package, and manual; inspect the current NRR label; and follow that model’s instructions. Do not assume another WorkTunes variant has the same rating, controls, connectivity, or features. These earmuffs are generally bulkier and warmer than consumer headphones, and audio and call performance may be less refined. The cited material supports a rating for the specified model, not a claim that every variant is suitable for every exposure.
Shop checks: An NRR label is not a guarantee of a particular real-world result. Confirm the earmuff seals around your ears with safety glasses, hair, and other PPE in place. A physical earmuff may still provide attenuation without power, but confirm that behavior in the exact model’s instructions. For high or impulse noise, follow exposure guidance on whether plugs plus muffs are appropriate.

The JBL Tour One M3 appears in current independent ANC comparisons, including coverage noting its feature set and optional SMART Tx accessory. See SoundGuys’ work-headphone comparison and its broader ANC comparison. The available evidence here does not establish a clean official U.S. specification set, current price, exact battery figure, or hearing-protection rating. Those should be checked against the exact official model listing and label before purchase; do not infer an NRR.
Consider it only as a consumer listening option after confirming the current U.S. model name, weight, ANC-on battery claim, Bluetooth and codec support, wired operation, multipoint behavior, and whether any safety rating applies to that exact model. If those details are unclear, do not buy it on the assumption that a premium ANC feature set equals shop protection.
How to choose for your shop
- Mostly steady motor or dust-collection noise: Consumer ANC may make background sound less intrusive, but use separately rated hearing protection if your exposure calls for it.
- High levels, nail guns, impacts, or other impulse noise: Do not rely on consumer ANC. Choose appropriately rated protection and consider double protection where recommended.
- Professional or long-shift use: Favor an exact-model protector with a clear rating, fit instructions, and replaceable cushions. A consumer headset is a poor stand-in for a hearing-conservation program.
- Need to hear people or alarms: Use an appropriate ambient/transparency mode or remove the headset when communication and auditory awareness are critical. Do not assume every mode reproduces warnings reliably.
- Heavy dust or rough handling: A jobsite-oriented protector is usually a more sensible choice than an expensive consumer headset, but still check the manufacturer’s instructions and care limits.
- Wear glasses, a respirator, or face shield: Make the fit decision with the whole PPE setup on. A cushion gap can compromise the seal.
Fit, audio, and awareness checklist
- Check the actual exposure. Noise varies with the machine, condition, material, room, distance, and duration. OSHA points to the NIOSH Sound Level Meter App as a screening tool; screening is not a substitute for a formal workplace noise assessment. See OSHA’s noise guidance.
- Check the exact product label. Look for an NRR on the exact model and configuration if you are buying hearing protection. “Noise cancelling” alone is not that rating.
- Test the seal with all PPE. Wear the shop safety glasses, respirator, hat, hearing aids, or face shield you actually use. Check for visible gaps, then turn your head and look down. Eyewear arms and straps can interfere with cushions.
- Keep music moderate. Turning up playback to compete with a planer or saw adds another potential sound exposure and can obscure abnormal machine noise. Use a conservative level and pause audio when needed.
- Plan for communication. Know how to activate ambient mode using controls you can operate in gloves, or remove the headset for setup, troubleshooting, blade changes, and other tasks requiring close auditory awareness. Do not let music replace alarms or visual safety procedures.
- Consider battery failure. Check whether ANC, audio, or protection changes when power runs out. Consumer headphones may lose ANC; a protector’s passive attenuation depends on its physical fit and design.
- Maintain the fit. Replace worn, cracked, or compressed cushions as directed. Keep protectors clean and store them away from sawdust and damage.
Over-ear headphones or earbuds?
Over-ear designs are generally easier to assess for physical coverage and cushion sealing, and they are often easier to combine with a separate protector than earbuds. But “over-ear” does not mean sealed: glasses, hair, straps, and movement can create gaps. Earbuds may suit someone who cannot tolerate clamp pressure or wants to wear plugs beneath earmuffs, but they are not hearing protection without an applicable label, and the complete combination must fit correctly. Do not assume that earbuds under ANC headphones or two protectors together yield a calculated, additive rating.

Which one should you buy?
- Best consumer ANC: Sony WH-1000XM6 for versatile listening and travel as well as shop use with appropriate separate protection.
- Best comfort-first alternative: Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen), if the fit suits you and you do not mistake ANC for an NRR.
- Best Apple ecosystem: AirPods Max 2, for Apple-centric users who accept its weight, cost, and consumer-headphone limitations.
- Best protection-oriented Bluetooth option: The documented 3M WorkTunes Wireless model, only after confirming that the exact unit matches the manual and current NRR label.
- Alternative to investigate: JBL Tour One M3, after checking official current specifications and exact-model safety labeling.
For woodshop safety, choose rated hearing protection first, then add wireless audio or ANC only if it preserves the fit, protection, and awareness your work requires. Headphones do not make a noisy shop safe: exposure duration, machine maintenance, noise controls, and other PPE still matter.
