There is no universally agreed ranking of the 39 “best” daylilies. This selection is a practical starting list built around American Daylily Society award recognition, the few cultivars with specific traits documented by extension sources, and a range of garden roles. Choose among them by bloom timing, color and form, mature scale, rebloom potential, and fit with your site and climate—not by award status alone.
Daylilies are Hemerocallis, not true lilies. Each flower usually lasts only a day, but successive buds keep the plant in bloom. Purdue Extension calls them “one of the easiest to grow garden perennials,” while noting that good care still matters. Purdue Extension and NC State Extension provide useful growing guidance.
What are the best daylilies to grow?
The right cultivar depends on what you need it to do: extend the bloom season, add a particular color, fill a border at a certain height, or provide a compact reblooming plant. The 39 cultivars below are drawn primarily from American Daylily Society Stout Silver Medal winners, with a handful of other selections whose traits are documented by extension sources. Awards recognize horticultural distinction; they do not guarantee the same performance in every garden.
The Stout Silver Medal is described by Kansas State University Gardens as “the highest recognition bestowed upon a daylily cultivar.” The American Daylily Society explains that a cultivar must first receive an Award of Merit to qualify; that award is intended to recognize performance across a broad geographic area. These cultivars add practical options beyond the award roster. Clemson Cooperative Extension describes ‘Happy Returns’ as a lemon-yellow descendant of ‘Stella de Oro’. It describes ‘Pardon Me’ as compact, fragrant, red-flowered with a yellow throat, midseason, and reblooming. Clemson Cooperative Extension’s daylily guide provides those descriptions.
- ‘Always Afternoon’ — Stout Silver Medal winner.
- ‘Happy Returns’ — lemon-yellow descendant of ‘Stella de Oro’.
- ‘Pardon Me’ — compact, fragrant, midseason red flowers with a yellow throat; reblooms.
The award records and extension descriptions consulted here do not establish detailed, independently verified bloom season, mature dimensions, or regional suitability for every name in a 39-cultivar list. Rather than assign unsupported traits, use the remaining candidates as award-record selections to investigate against current registration or nursery information before buying:

Which daylilies bloom all summer?
No single daylily is established here as blooming continuously all summer in every climate. Individual flowers generally last a day, and a plant’s successive buds create its display. Bloom duration varies by cultivar and conditions. University of Florida IFAS reports a typical four-to-seven-week bloom period for Florida gardens; that regional figure should not be applied to other climates. UF/IFAS daylily guidance places Florida’s typical bloom timing from March to mid-May.

For a longer garden display, combine early-, mid-, and late-season cultivars, checking the bloom classifications for your region when purchasing. Reblooming varieties can add another flush, but the documented Clemson descriptions of rebloom apply specifically to ‘Pardon Me’ and the named selection should be checked for local results.
Do daylilies need full sun?
Full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil are sound starting points. Arkansas Extension recommends at least six hours of sunlight in its 2003 daylily guidance; NC State likewise lists sun to partial shade. Too much shade can reduce flowering, while excessively rich soil may encourage foliage at the expense of blooms. Arkansas Extension and NC State Extension offer regional advice.

Planting and division
- Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny or lightly shaded spot.
- Purdue Extension recommends late summer or early fall planting so roots can establish before cold weather.
- Divide clumps to propagate or manage crowded plants; fall or early spring are commonly recommended windows. NC State and Arkansas Extension both discuss these timings.
- NC State guidance says winter lifting and storage are generally unnecessary in its regional context.
Which daylilies are best for my zone?
NC State’s plant database gives a USDA hardiness range of zones 3a–9b for daylilies as a group. That is regional database guidance, not a guarantee for every cultivar, garden microclimate, or growing condition. Confirm the hardiness and local bloom timing of the named cultivar with a current, reliable listing, and consider drainage and winter exposure as well as the zone number.

Are daylilies safe around cats?
No. NC State Extension lists daylilies as toxic to cats. Keep the plants where cats cannot chew them; if a cat eats any part of a daylily, contact a veterinarian promptly. NC State Extension’s plant entry describes the risk.
