Amazon Echo speakers can do more than play music, set timers and answer questions. Alexa can also run routines, manage household lists, control compatible smart-home devices, make calls and broadcast announcements. The exact features depend on your Echo model, account, country, linked services and current Alexa app version; Echo Show and Echo Spot features should not be assumed to work on a speaker without a screen.
Use the Alexa app to set up most account, device, communication, routine and privacy options. App labels and locations change, so treat the paths below as places to look rather than permanent menu instructions. Some examples require a compatible device, enabled skill or linked service. These 29 tips focus on everyday uses and the safeguards worth checking alongside them.
Set up Alexa for your household

Start with the Alexa app
The app is the main place to register Echo devices, link services, organize rooms, set up routines and manage communication and privacy controls. After setup, check that each Echo has a clear device name and is assigned to the right room. If a feature or setting described elsewhere is missing, check the current app and Amazon help for your device and region rather than relying on an old screenshot.

Choose a wake word that suits the room
In the Alexa app, open the device’s settings and look for its wake-word option. Choose from the alternatives offered for that particular device and account; choices can vary. Wake-word changes are generally made per Echo, so repeat the change on other devices where you want it. A different wake word can help when a television or person’s name is frequently triggering the device.

Set up an Alexa Voice ID
A Voice ID can help Alexa recognize a speaker and personalize some responses or services. Look in the app’s profile or communication settings for voice recognition setup. It is a convenience feature, not strong identity verification: do not rely on voice recognition alone to secure purchases, sensitive information or access to a home.

Review household profiles and account switching
Household members may be able to use their own profiles or switch accounts, depending on the setup. This matters for music libraries, calendars, shopping permissions and recommendations. Test whose account is active before asking for personal calendar or shopping information, and review permissions before sharing an Echo with someone outside your household.

Link a music service and set a default
In the app’s music or linked-services settings, connect a supported provider and choose a default where that option is offered. Then you can say, for example, “Alexa, play jazz” rather than naming the service each time. Catalogs, free-tier limits, playback controls and availability vary by provider and country. A paid plan may be needed for some content or listening modes, but an Echo does not require a paid Amazon subscription for basic timers and voice control.

Pair Bluetooth headphones or a speaker
Put the headphones or speaker in pairing mode, then use the Echo’s Bluetooth settings in the Alexa app or ask Alexa to pair a Bluetooth device. This can make listening more private or route audio to a larger speaker. If it stops connecting, check whether another device has taken the connection and pair again. Bluetooth audio can introduce delay, which may be noticeable with video.

Use named timers as well as alarms
Try “Alexa, set a timer for 12 minutes,” “Alexa, set a pasta timer for 10 minutes,” or “Alexa, how much time is left on my pasta timer?” For a wake-up, say “Alexa, set an alarm for 7 a.m.” You can also use the app to review or manage timers and alarms. Exact alarm features differ by device and software, so check the Echo itself if an option is not available.

Keep shopping and to-do lists by voice
Say “Alexa, add coffee to my shopping list” or “Alexa, add call the dentist to my to-do list.” Ask “Alexa, what’s on my shopping list?” to hear items, and use the app to review or edit them. These lists are associated with your account. If an Echo is shared, remember that other people may be able to hear or see list information.

Try Follow-Up Mode
When available, Follow-Up Mode leaves Alexa ready briefly after a response so you can ask a related question without repeating the wake word. Find the option in the individual Echo’s settings in the app. It can make a conversation feel smoother, but in a noisy room a follow-up may be picked up unintentionally. Turn it off if that trade-off is not worthwhile.

Shorten confirmations with Brief Mode
Brief Mode reduces some spoken confirmations, sometimes replacing a response with a tone. Look in the app’s Alexa voice-response settings if the option is available. It does not make Alexa silent in every situation, and urgent alerts or other responses may still be audible.

Use Whisper Mode at night
On supported devices and accounts, whisper to Alexa and ask for a quiet response; Whisper Mode can also be enabled in voice-response settings. It is useful for a late-night timer or question, but it does not mute the microphone, remove network processing or guarantee that every sound will be inaudible.

Make a morning or bedtime Routine
In the app, create a Routine with a spoken phrase such as “Alexa, start my morning,” then add actions such as weather, a calendar summary, lights or music. Routines group actions so one trigger can start a sequence. Amazon describes triggers including voice, time and smart-home events in its Routines documentation. Test each action: one unavailable service or device can fail while other steps still run.

Trigger a Routine by time or location
A time-based Routine can start a regular reminder or wind-down sequence; a location trigger may suit actions such as turning lights on as you arrive home. Create the trigger in the app and review which phone, permissions and devices it depends on. Location-based behavior can require phone location permissions and may vary by region. For a failed Routine, check the trigger and each action separately before rebuilding it.

Use Announcements as a household intercom
Say “Alexa, announce dinner is ready” to broadcast a message to compatible Alexa devices associated with the account. Announcements are broadcasts, not private messages, so avoid sensitive information. Amazon lists Announcements among Alexa communication features; see its communication terminology guidance.

Set up Drop In only for people who need it
Drop In is an optional, near-instant intercom connection between supported Alexa devices. In the Alexa app, review communication settings and the permissions for the relevant device or contact; grant access selectively and disable it when it is no longer needed. External contacts require permission from the receiving party. Because Drop In is designed to connect immediately rather than behave like an ordinary call that always rings for acceptance, be especially careful about bedroom, child-room and shared-space devices. Amazon explains the feature and permissions in its communication documentation.

Make Alexa calls or send messages to supported contacts
After enabling Alexa communications and granting the necessary contact permissions, you may be able to call or message supported contacts through an Echo or the Alexa app. Availability and destinations vary by account, device and country; this is not unrestricted cellular calling. Amazon groups calling, messaging, Drop In and Announcements under Alexa communications in its guidance.

Ask Alexa to remember something
Try “Alexa, remember that the spare key is in the desk drawer,” then later ask, “Alexa, what did I ask you to remember?” Treat remembered details as account data: do not store passwords, alarm codes or other information that should not be spoken aloud in a shared room.

Link a calendar with care
In the app’s calendar or linked-services settings, connect a supported calendar if you want Alexa to answer schedule questions or support reminders. Check which account is linked and what information Alexa can announce. A shared Echo can reveal appointments to anyone nearby, so consider limiting spoken details or using a personal device for sensitive events.

Ask for conversions and cooking measurements
Try “Alexa, how many tablespoons are in a quarter cup?” or “Alexa, convert 200 grams to ounces.” For a timed step, say “Alexa, set a five-minute timer.” Answers and recipe assistance can depend on the service and device, especially on screen-equipped models. Avoid relying on a particular named recipe skill unless it is currently available in your region and account.

Discover compatible lights, plugs and other devices
Check the manufacturer’s compatibility details first. Some products can be discovered directly; others require enabling a manufacturer skill and signing into that service. A typical setup is: link the service if needed, discover devices in Alexa, give them clear names, assign rooms, then test a basic command. “Works with Alexa” does not mean every function is voice-controllable: available controls depend on the device, skill, account permissions and cloud service.

Organize devices into rooms and groups
Put devices in clear groups such as Kitchen or Living Room, then try “Alexa, turn on the kitchen lights” or “Alexa, turn off downstairs.” Use distinct names instead of giving several devices the same label, such as “lamp” or “bedroom.” If a command targets the wrong device, say the room and device name explicitly, then remove duplicate or confusing names in the app.

Use scenes for one-step lighting changes
A scene can set several compatible devices to a chosen state, such as dimmed lights for a film or lights off at bedtime. Depending on the equipment, create it in the manufacturer’s app, Alexa or both. Avoid maintaining competing versions of the same scene; if a scene does not run, test the underlying devices and check which service owns it.

Assign a preferred speaker to a room
If you have multiple Alexa speakers, a preferred speaker setting can route general music requests for a room to the speaker you expect. Look in the room or speaker-group settings in the app. This is different from creating a synchronized multi-room group. Supported configurations vary; Amazon documents speaker targeting and preferred-speaker behavior for Alexa-connected speakers.

Create a Multi-Room Music group
Multi-Room Music is for synchronized playback on compatible devices, not just sending a song to a different Echo. Create a group in the Alexa app’s device or speaker-group controls, then ask for music on that group. Compatibility depends on the Echo models, any third-party speakers and the music service. If playback fails or is out of sync, check that devices are online and on the same network, confirm service support, and make sure you addressed the group rather than a single room. Amazon describes Multi-Room Music and device targeting.

Pair compatible Echo speakers with Fire TV for home theater
Some Echo and Fire TV combinations can be configured to play TV audio through Echo speakers. This is a model-specific feature, not a capability of every Echo or television. Check Amazon’s current compatibility and setup information for your exact devices before buying hardware, and allow for possible audio delay. A stereo pair, a home-theater configuration and a soundbar are different setups; do not assume they are interchangeable. Amazon’s documentation covers Alexa-connected soundbars and AV receivers, but confirm current Echo/Fire TV support for your models.

Privacy, safety and controls worth checking

Review and delete voice history
Use the Alexa app’s privacy controls or Amazon account privacy settings to review voice history, delete recordings and set automatic deletion where offered. Deleting Alexa recordings does not necessarily erase information held separately by a linked service. Amazon’s terms of use describe Alexa inputs and related information, including lists and data from linked third-party services, that may be processed or retained in the cloud. Voice-history controls are useful, but they are not a promise that every related record across every service is erased.

Protect voice purchasing
Review voice purchasing, purchase confirmation and any PIN or equivalent protection available in your account settings. Check household permissions and purchase notifications as well. If children or visitors can speak to an Echo, disable voice purchasing or require confirmation rather than relying on a device’s location to prevent accidental orders. Exact control names and availability can change.

Use microphone, Do Not Disturb and accessibility controls
The physical microphone-off button on an Echo disables its microphones; the device’s indicator shows when they are muted. Do Not Disturb can reduce interruptions, but it is not the same as muting the microphone or disabling all communications. Echo Show and Echo Spot have screen-dependent controls such as visual timers or captions where supported; do not assume those features exist on speaker-only models. Review communication permissions and consider placement carefully, especially for a camera-equipped display in a private room.

Audit skills and rediscover features
Check enabled skills and linked services periodically, remove ones you no longer use, and retest favorite commands after a service or app update. Feature-discovery areas in the Alexa app can surface current options, but older articles may describe renamed, retired or region-limited skills. IFTTT recipes and other third-party automations are not built-in Echo features and may stop working. If a familiar control is missing, search the current app or Amazon help rather than assuming the feature still exists under an old menu path.

If an Echo feature stops working
- Alexa misses the wake word: check the microphone mute button, move the Echo away from a television or fan, and try a clearer location.
- Alexa hears you but misunderstands: check the voice-history transcript, use a shorter distinct device name, remove duplicate names, and state the room explicitly. Confirm any required skill is enabled.
- A smart-home device is unresponsive: test it in its manufacturer’s app, check Wi-Fi or hub status, then review the linked skill and rediscover devices if needed.
- A Routine only partly runs: test each action on its own, check the order and permissions, and look for an offline device or service. Replace a fragile third-party step with a native action when practical.
- Music plays in the wrong room: verify room and preferred-speaker assignments, group names and the service’s support for the selected playback mode.
- A call or Drop In fails: check that communications are enabled and permissions are granted by both sides where required; also confirm the recipient has a supported device or app setup.
- The wrong account responds: check the active profile or account and linked service, particularly after household account switching.
- The Echo is on Wi-Fi but Alexa cannot complete requests: check the internet connection, restart the Echo and router if appropriate, and consider a temporary Amazon or service outage before deleting devices or rebuilding routines.
Capabilities vary by model, account, country, language, service and software release. For purchases or a new smart-home setup, confirm compatibility on the manufacturer’s current page before choosing hardware; buying a screen-equipped Echo is not necessary for basic routines, timers or voice control.
