There is no universally best ivy for a yard. First identify whether the plant is true ivy (Hedera) or a lookalike such as Boston ivy or poison ivy. Then match mature size, leaf color, light, climate and your area’s invasive-plant rules. Plain-green Hedera usually handles deeper shade better than variegated forms, while every outdoor planting needs routine pruning and a plan to prevent escape.
19 ivy types and ivy lookalikes
The list below combines verified Hedera species and cultivars with commonly named plants that are not botanically related. “Type” therefore means a distinct plant or a useful horticultural form, not 19 entries from one authoritative classification.
| Type | Identity and appearance | Best fit and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| 1. English ivy (Hedera helix) | Evergreen woody climber with lobed juvenile leaves; mature stems can become bushier, flower and produce berries. | Shade-tolerant, but invasive in North Carolina. Use only where local guidance permits; a patio container is safer there. |
| 2. ‘Glacier’ | Gray-green leaves edged in cream. | Use where some light will preserve variegation; protect from uncontrolled spread. |
| 3. ‘Goldchild’ | Green leaves with gold margins. | Some sun improves color; avoid waterlogged soil. |
| 4. ‘Buttercup’ | Slow-growing form with butter-yellow leaves. | A compact-looking choice for containers or closely monitored beds; confirm local hardiness. |
| 5. ‘Ivalace’ | Dark, glossy, deeply lobed leaves with wavy or curled edges. | Good for foliage contrast on a support where pruning is accessible. |
| 6. ‘Baltica’ | Smaller leaves and a reputation for hardiness. | Virginia Cooperative Extension reports English-ivy hardiness broadly as USDA zones 4–9 depending on cultivar; some cultivars are not hardy in zone 6. |
| 7. Persian ivy ‘Sulphur Heart’ (Hedera colchica) | Large-growing cultivar with bold, heart-shaped foliage and yellow coloration. | Needs room and firm containment; do not assume a large-growing ivy is suitable for a small tree or wall. |
| 8. Persian ivy ‘Dentata Variegata’ (Hedera colchica) | Large, variegated leaves with toothed edges. | Give brighter light than a plain-green form and prune before it reaches unwanted structures. |
| 9. Canary Island ivy (Hedera canariensis) | Vigorous evergreen ivy with large leaves; the profile lists potential height up to 30 feet. | Listed as invasive in California and rated USDA zones 7b–9b in the NC State profile. Those zones do not make it appropriate everywhere within them. |
| 10. ‘Gloire de Marengo’ | Variegated Canary Island ivy cultivar. | Use only after checking regional invasive status and mature spread. |
| 11. ‘Marginomaculata’ | Canary Island ivy with marked leaf margins. | Needs enough light to maintain variegation and regular trimming. |
| 12. ‘Ravensholst’ | Named Canary Island ivy cultivar. | Choose a container or bounded bed if local agencies warn against outdoor planting. |
| 13. ‘Striata’ | Striped Canary Island ivy cultivar. | Confirm winter performance and invasive status locally before purchase. |
| 14. ‘Variegata’ | Variegated Canary Island ivy cultivar. | Brighter shade or filtered sun generally supports better leaf pattern. |
| 15. Green-leaved Hedera | The plain-green group of true ivy cultivars. | Generally the best Hedera choice for deeper shade; still avoid saturated soil and uncontrolled runners. |
| 16. Variegated Hedera | Cream-, yellow- or gray-marked leaves, including ‘Glacier’ and ‘Goldchild’. | Some sunlight is usually needed for strong color; harsh exposure can scorch foliage. |
| 17. Juvenile, trailing Hedera | Low, lobed stems that spread horizontally and usually do not flower. | Useful as groundcover only where edges can be inspected and cut back frequently. |
| 18. Boston ivy (Parthenocissus tricuspidata) | Not a true ivy; a deciduous or semi-evergreen vine with seasonal color. | Clemson reports USDA zones 4–9. Select it when you want autumn display rather than evergreen Hedera foliage. |
| 19. Poison ivy (Toxicodendron radicans) | Not ornamental Hedera; a native plant whose oils can cause an allergic rash. | Do not plant as a garden vine. Learn to identify and remove it safely. |
How to choose the right ivy for your yard
1. Verify the botanical name
Ask the nursery for the Latin name. Hedera is true ivy; Boston ivy is Parthenocissus, and poison ivy is Toxicodendron. Common names alone are unreliable.

2. Match light to foliage
- Choose green Hedera for the deepest shade.
- Give variegated cultivars filtered sun or gentle morning light so markings remain visible.
- Acclimate container plants gradually; sudden hot sun can scorch leaves.
3. Check mature behavior, not the pot size
Juvenile ivy can look small and harmless, yet adult stems may become woody, flower and set seed. Horizontal stems can root or spread locally, while mature vertical growth can provide berries for birds to distribute. Plan access for pruning before planting.

4. Check climate and local rules
Hardiness varies by cultivar. English ivy is reported at USDA zones 4–9 overall, but not every cultivar survives zone 6. Canary Island ivy is listed at zones 7b–9b. Contact your county extension service or invasive-plant authority for the current status where you live; North Carolina lists English ivy as invasive, and California lists Canary Island ivy as invasive.
Planting and containment
- Choose a site with drainage. Most Hedera tolerates varied soils and shade, but waterlogged ground can cause decline. Use a freely draining container, particularly where winter wet is a problem.
- Plant in spring. Fall planting can work in regions with milder winters. Water moderately to regularly while roots establish, then adjust to rainfall and soil.
- Use support only when appropriate. A trellis, fence or wall can guide a contained climber. It does not replace suitability checks or pruning, and do not allow vines to enter trees or neighboring property.
- Inspect and prune often. Cut runners at the bed edge, remove stems heading into trees, gutters or masonry, and dispose of cut material so it cannot root. UC Integrated Pest Management’s practical rule is: “Prune back often so that ivy does not get out of control.”
- Remove unwanted plants carefully. Wear gloves and long sleeves, especially around poison ivy. Keep English and Canary Island ivy berries and foliage away from children and pets; extension profiles classify both as medium-severity poisonous plants.
Does ivy damage trees or walls?
Context matters. RHS notes that ivy does not directly harm healthy trees or sound masonry, while North American extension services describe vigorous English ivy smothering trees, competing with forest understory and reaching unintended parts of a property. In either setting, weight, trapped moisture, inaccessible pruning and weakened surfaces increase risk. Keep ivy out of tree canopies and off questionable masonry unless you can monitor it closely.
