For a typical interior room with sound walls, water-based paint and ceilings no higher than a standard extension-ladder reach, start with a controlled kit: a 2–2½-inch brush, roller frame and correctly chosen covers, one paint-loading system, painter’s tape, floor protection, cleanup rags and the reach or repair tools your room actually requires. The 16-item list below separates recurring essentials from conditional equipment, then identifies seven purchases that commonly duplicate another tool or solve a problem this project does not have.
The 16 painting tools worth having
Brushes and roller covers must match both the coating and the surface. Sherwin-Williams explains the trade-offs in its brush and roller guide; its supply checklist is at Five DIY Paint Supplies You Need.
- 2–2½-inch angled or trim brush. Use it to cut in corners, around trim and at the ceiling line. An angled sash style gives control; choose bristles suited to your paint chemistry.
- Roller frame. Select a frame that fits the cover width you plan to use and locks the cover securely.
- Roller covers. Buy covers whose fabric suits the paint and whose pile depth suits the texture: shorter pile for smooth surfaces and deeper pile for rougher ones. Keep a spare cover for the same coating.
- Paint tray. A tray is the straightforward loading station for a standard roller setup.
- Tray liners. Liners speed color changes and cleanup when you are working from a tray. Benjamin Moore includes tray liners in its house-painting supplies checklist.
- Bucket and roller grid. Choose this instead of a tray when you prefer loading from a larger bucket, are painting a substantial area or want less frequent refilling. Behr lists both bucket/grid and tray workflows in its interior paint supplies guide.
- Painter’s tape. Mask baseboards, casings, hardware and clean junctions. Press the edge firmly, and remove the tape according to the paint and tape directions before the edge fully hardens.
- Canvas drop cloth. Cover floors and nearby furniture. Sherwin-Williams notes that canvas is absorbent and less likely to slide than lightweight coverings in its DIY painting techniques.
- Rags. Keep clean rags available for drips, wiping tools and protecting small surfaces during setup and cleanup.
- Extension pole. A pole fitted to the roller keeps high walls and ceilings reachable from the floor and reduces repeated bending. It is unnecessary for low walls that you can coat comfortably without it.
- Appropriate ladder. Use a stable ladder when cutting in or reaching areas a pole cannot handle. Match its type and size to the room; never substitute furniture.
- Patch compound. Buy it only when nail holes, dents or other small defects need filling before paint.
- Putty knife. Spread patching compound and remove loose material around repairs.
- Sandpaper. Smooth dried patches, ridges and glossy trouble spots before priming or painting. Select a grit appropriate to the repair rather than sanding every wall automatically.
- Scraper. Use one for peeling paint, loose caulk or other material that must be removed before a sound coat can adhere.
- Stirring and measuring tools supplied with your paint. Use the manufacturer’s recommended stirrer and a suitable container when decanting or mixing. Do not improvise with contaminated household utensils.
Choose the setup before you buy
Match the brush and cover to the coating
Water-based and oil-based paints can require different brush materials. Roller-cover fabric may be synthetic, natural or blended; pile depth should follow the wall’s texture. Pick one paint-loading workflow
A tray with a liner is compact and familiar for a single room. A bucket with a grid can be more efficient over larger areas. You generally need one system, not both; the choice depends on how much paint you will move and how often you want to refill.

Size reach equipment to the room
Use an extension pole for high walls or ceilings when the roller can do the work from the floor. Where a ladder is still necessary, choose a ladder rated and sized for that task. Sherwin-Williams covers both options in its supply list and technique guide.
Inspect the surface before purchasing preparation tools
Walk the room in side light. If the existing finish is sound and smooth, you may need no scraper, patch compound, putty knife or extensive sanding. If you find holes, peeling areas, ridges or failed caulk, buy only the preparation tools that address those defects. Seven purchases to skip for the typical room
“Don’t buy” depends on the same assumptions as the list above: one or two interior rooms, ordinary wall texture, a brush-and-roller application and no major restoration. These are not universal prohibitions.

- A second complete tray-and-bucket system. Choose the workflow that fits your area; buying both usually duplicates the paint-loading job.
- A powered paint sprayer. Spraying can make sense for large, empty projects and compatible coatings, but it adds masking, overspray control and equipment-cleaning work that a normal occupied room does not require.
- Multiple specialty trim brushes. Start with one quality 2–2½-inch angled brush. Add a different shape only when the trim profile or coating genuinely demands it.
- A full range of roller widths. One frame and cover width suited to your walls is enough for a standard room; buy another size only for a clearly different area.
- A tall professional scaffold or oversized ladder. Use the appropriate household ladder and an extension pole unless the room’s height or geometry specifically requires other access equipment.
- Heavy repair supplies for a sound surface. Do not buy scrapers, fillers and sanding equipment “just in case” when inspection shows no defects; preparation tools are condition-dependent.
- Both disposable plastic protection and canvas for the same floor. Select protection that stays put and handles the spill risk in your room. Canvas is the reusable, absorbent option described by Sherwin-Williams; adding another full covering system may only add cost and storage.
A practical buying sequence
- Identify the paint chemistry and wall texture.
- Measure the room’s height and note whether a pole or ladder is needed.
- Inspect walls and trim for holes, peeling, gloss or failed caulk.
- Choose either a tray-and-liner or bucket-and-grid workflow.
- Buy the brush, frame and covers, then add tape, floor protection and rags.
- Add only the repair, sanding and reach tools justified by the inspection.
- Before opening paint, cover floors and furniture, mask vulnerable edges and stage the loading station.
