You can grow herbs, vegetables and flowers on a patio, balcony or doorstep—provided you match each plant to the light, space and care your pots can offer. These ten options are drawn from university extension and RHS guidance, not ranked; local climate, planting season and variety affect what will thrive.
Choose plants for your patio’s light and your goals
Start by observing how many hours of direct sunlight the space receives, then check the plant label for the variety’s requirements. For container vegetables, Illinois Extension describes full sun as at least six hours and partial shade as four to six hours. These are useful guidelines, not guarantees for every plant or climate. Illinois Extension’s container vegetable guidance and the University of Minnesota Extension both advise matching plants to available sunlight.
Decide whether you want edible harvests, seasonal color, or both. Containers can hold everything from herbs and vegetables to bedding plants, shrubs and small trees, and are useful where there is no garden soil, including patios, according to the RHS guide to growing plants in containers.

Herbs for a useful harvest
- Basil: Bush basil is among the herbs Illinois Extension identifies as suitable for containers. Choose a variety that fits your pot, and follow its label for sun and watering.
- Thyme: A container-friendly culinary herb. It can share a larger pot with other herbs if there is enough room and their watering needs are compatible.
- Parsley: Another container herb recommended by Illinois Extension, with leafy stems to harvest as needed.
- Rosemary: Suitable for container growing, but use a well-drained pot and check whether your local winter conditions allow it to remain outdoors.
Illinois Extension names these herbs in its guide to growing herbs in containers. Their care is not interchangeable: the guidance notes that herb water requirements vary, so don’t group them solely for convenience.

Vegetables for a small-space crop
- Patio or cherry tomato: Illinois Extension identifies patio and cherry tomatoes as container options. Select a compact variety and provide the sunlight, pot size and support specified on its label.
- Lettuce: Minnesota Extension includes lettuce among container-friendly vegetables. Choose a variety suited to your available light and the temperatures in your growing season.
- Pepper: A small-space container choice in Minnesota Extension’s guidance. Check the cultivar’s light and root-space requirements before choosing a pot.
For tomatoes and other vegetables, use container-specific growing advice and the variety label to guide pot size and setup. Illinois Extension covers growing vegetables in containers; Minnesota Extension lists vegetables suited to small-space containers.
Flowers for seasonal color
- Petunia: Minnesota Extension lists petunias for container color. Check the label for the variety’s sun and care needs.
- Marigold: A flower Minnesota Extension includes among plants that can be grown in pots.
- Geranium: Another container flower recommended by Minnesota Extension. Choose a variety and position that suit your site.
These are options, not a promise that all ten will thrive in the same conditions. Minnesota Extension’s small-space container gardening guide discusses these flowers alongside site choice and container care.

Set up pots for healthy roots
Choose a suitable container
Use a pot with drainage holes and enough room for the plant’s root system. Excess water needs a way to leave; standing water can deprive roots of air. If reusing a vessel for food plants, make sure it is clean and appropriate for that use. See Illinois Extension’s container guidance for drainage and pot considerations.
Use container potting mix
Choose a potting mix made for containers rather than ordinary garden soil. The growing medium influences drainage and water retention, and Illinois Extension advises against using garden soil in pots. Follow the mix label, particularly when planting edible crops. Group plants only when their needs match
A larger planter can hold more than one plant, but allow for mature size and root space. Pair plants only when their light, water and other care needs are compatible; herbs, in particular, can differ in how much water they need.

Container mix is limited and can dry faster than garden soil. Check pots regularly, especially in warm, sunny weather. Water thoroughly so moisture reaches the roots, then let excess drain. Avoid both bone-dry mix and waterlogged roots: how often a pot needs water depends on weather, sun exposure, pot size and material, and the plant. The RHS notes that containers may need regular watering in spring and summer, with small pots in full sun needing especially close attention. As University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator Andrew Holsinger put it in “6 Tips for Watering Container Gardens,” published June 22, 2020: “Proper drainage is just as important as the amount of water added to the container.” Read the University of Illinois Extension article.

Feed according to the potting mix and fertilizer label. Container plants have a limited amount of compost and may need more feeding than plants in the ground, but the right product and schedule depend on the plant and growing medium. The RHS guide explains container feeding and ongoing care.

Adapt the choice to your local season
The recommendations combine UK RHS and US university extension advice. Plant availability, planting dates and winter survival vary by location, so use local seasonal guidance and the plant label rather than assuming a variety suited to one region will behave the same elsewhere. For a very small pot, prioritize compact cultivars and follow the label’s spacing and container directions.
