Xiaomi’s Mijia Laser Engraving Machine was a real product, reported for sale in China in December 2023 at a launch price of ¥1,399. It is a compact, app-controlled 3W diode engraver for small personalization projects—not a construction tool, industrial marker or high-powered laser cutter. The China-market launch does not establish an official international release.
A China launch, not a confirmed global release
Coverage reported the machine moving from crowdfunding or pre-order into sales in China around December 20, 2023. Reports differ on whether that date marked conventional open retail sales or the start of a crowdfunding window, so it is most accurate to say the product was offered for sale in China after a crowdfunding launch. Xiaomi’s Chinese online-store listing confirms the device is genuine; a product page alone does not confirm present inventory.
The reported launch price was ¥1,399, about US$196 at the time of the original coverage. That conversion is historical, not a current price. Overseas reseller listings show that imports have been offered, but they are not evidence of an official global launch. Xiaomi’s global tools catalog does not list the engraver. Current stock, local warranty coverage and support outside China are not established by the available listings.

What the machine is—and what it is not
The MIJIA Laser Engraving Machine is described as a small 450 nm blue diode laser with 3W of optical power. Its reported maximum engraving area is 100 × 100 mm. That makes it suited to small designs, labels and personal marks on compatible flat materials. It is not a CO₂ machine or an industrial marking system, and its engraving-focused marketing should not be read as a promise of substantial cutting performance.

Reseller specifications also cite a 0.25 mm vertical spot, galvanometer scanning up to 4,800 mm/s, dual-focus optics and TOF distance measurement. Those are product or listing claims, not results from independent speed or accuracy testing.

Materials and practical limits
Reported compatible materials include kraft paper, leather, canvas, solid wood or wood board, and black plastic board, including ABS or PC. Some listings also mention fruit and bread. That list is not a guarantee that every grade, finish or color will mark reliably: settings and results can differ by material, and the sources do not establish general compatibility with clear or light-colored plastics, acrylic, metal, glass or every kind of wood.
The reported work area is small, and product information says curved-surface engraving is unsupported. Height measurement and an adjustable support do not amount to a rotary attachment or full 3D engraving capability. At 3W, the machine is best understood as a light-duty engraver; there is no verified evidence here for dependable cutting depth in wood, acrylic or other materials.

For anyone considering a project, confirm compatibility in the manual and test a small offcut using material-specific settings. Do not experiment with PVC, vinyl, unknown plastics, coated materials or chemically treated surfaces: laser heating can release hazardous or corrosive fumes. A material name alone is not enough to establish that a particular product or finish is safe.
App-based workflow and compact design
Launch coverage describes a phone-centered process: power on the engraver, add it in the Mijia app, create or choose artwork, position and preview the design, then start engraving. The app is presented as supporting text, stickers, hand-drawn work and other designs. Exact current app labels, phone requirements and setup steps have not been verified from a manual.

Third-party sellers report that an imported China-version unit may require setting the Mi Home/Xiaomi Home app region to “Chinese Mainland” before it appears. A region change can affect which devices are visible and how an existing Xiaomi setup behaves; check compatibility before buying rather than assuming the machine will join a non-China account.

Laser safety matters even for a small machine
A compact enclosure does not make a laser engraver risk-free. Never look into the beam, keep children and pets away, do not leave operation unattended, and use the enclosure and supplied eye protection exactly as the manual directs. Work on a stable surface with adequate ventilation and only use materials confirmed safe for this machine. Do not defeat interlocks or other safety measures, and follow the manual and local laser-product rules.
Reseller descriptions report that protective goggles and a cover are included, along with a power adapter, manual and two pieces of kraft paper. Package contents can vary by seller or retail batch, so confirm the exact box contents and adapter specifications before purchase.
What overseas buyers should check
A third-party import is different from Xiaomi selling and supporting a product in the buyer’s country. Before ordering, verify the seller’s stock, return policy, warranty, shipping destination, adapter and voltage, documentation language, and the app’s regional requirement. Imported units may lack local Xiaomi warranty service and can bring customs charges or slower support. Reseller prices such as $299.80 or $399 are historical listing signals, not Xiaomi’s ¥1,399 launch price or verified current prices.
The machine may appeal to a Xiaomi user or hobbyist who wants a portable engraver for small, flat personalization jobs and is comfortable with a China-market app setup. It is a poor fit for large panels, direct metal marking, curved objects, production throughput, substantial cutting, or buyers who need straightforward local service. A construction workshop seeking durable jobsite marking or fabrication capacity should assess a purpose-built machine against its work area, power, material requirements and safety provisions rather than infer suitability from the Xiaomi name.
