SKM Power*Tools

#7 of 41 in Electrical Design Software

from $299 a year

What it is

SKM Power*Tools is electrical engineering software for analyzing power systems. Its study modules cover fault calculations, load flow, coordination, arc-flash evaluation, motor starting, transient simulation, reliability, harmonics, grounding and cable pulling. The Arc Flash Evaluation module calculates incident energy and the arc-flash boundary at each location. DAPPER offers a one-line interface with fault analysis, load flow, demand load, cable and transformer sizing, and panel schedules. Data Exchange supports tab-delimited, CSV and SKM XML formats, with interfaces for Autodesk Revit and Intergraph SmartPlant Electrical. PTW is desktop software for Windows. SKM Mobile is available for iOS and Android, where engineers can collect field data, review study results and share projects. Transferring projects between mobile and desktop requires a MySKM Cloud subscription; cloud project data is permanently deleted if the subscription is not renewed. SKM lists a paid model and offers DAPPER licenses at different bus capacities, as well as annual mobile and cloud plans.

Who it suits. It suits electrical engineers designing or analyzing power distribution systems, including those working in commercial, industrial, institutional, utility and petrochemical facilities. Mobile project exchange with PTW requires a MySKM Cloud subscription.

Good

  • Arc-flash module calculates incident energy and boundaries.
  • DAPPER includes fault analysis and load flow.
  • Data Exchange interfaces with Revit and SmartPlant Electrical.
  • Mobile app supports field data and study reviews.
  • PTW follows listed IEEE practices and UL 489.

Watch for

  • No free plan is listed.
  • Mobile desktop exchange requires a MySKM Cloud subscription.
  • Cloud project data is deleted if renewal is missed.
  • Windows desktop requirements include dual monitors.

Verdict

Power*Tools combines power-system study modules with DAPPER analysis and mobile field workflows. Check the cloud subscription requirements and renewal terms if you need to transfer projects between mobile and desktop.
