The Best Fireplaces Under $500 for Real Supplemental Heat

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your budget is under $500, the best fireplace for most homes is a plug-in electric model: a freestanding stove, a log insert for an existing hearth, a wall-mounted unit, or a compact mantel fireplace. These units are realistic enough for atmosphere, simple enough for many homeowners to install, and usually deliver about 4,800 to 5,100 BTU per hour from a standard 120-volt outlet.

That last number matters. A 1,500-watt electric fireplace equals about 5,118 BTU/hr because 1 watt equals 3.41 BTU/hr. That is useful supplemental heat for a bedroom, office, basement sitting area, apartment living room, or closed-off den. It is not a replacement for central heat, a furnace, or a properly sized gas appliance.

On our job sites, we treat under-$500 fireplaces as comfort and design upgrades, not whole-house mechanical systems. The right one can make a cold room usable, improve an empty wall, or bring an old masonry fireplace back to life without opening the chimney. The wrong one can overload a weak circuit, look undersized, or create a clearance problem around furniture, curtains, bedding, or a television.

Best Fireplace Types Under $500

For a real-world homeowner budget, the strongest options are electric. Small ethanol fireplaces can also fall under $500, but they are usually better for ambiance than economical heat. Gas and wood-burning fireplaces do not belong in a true under-$500 installed-cost comparison because gas lines, venting, chimney work, permits, and labor quickly move the project into the thousands.

Our Top Picks by Situation

Best overall under $500: plug-in electric stove fireplace

An electric stove is the easiest recommendation when a homeowner wants warmth, a visible flame effect, and no construction work. Most units are roughly 20 to 28 inches wide, weigh 25 to 60 pounds, and plug into a standard grounded outlet. Many cost $100 to $300, leaving room in the budget for a better-looking unit with a metal body, thermostat, remote, and overheat protection.

This category works especially well in bedrooms, home offices, enclosed porches that are part of conditioned space, and basement corners. The cabinet shape suits traditional rooms better than a black-glass wall fireplace. It also avoids the common mistake of mounting a fake fireplace too high under a TV.

What to check before buying: look for a 1,400- to 1,500-watt heater, tip-over or overheat protection, a thermostat setting, flame-only mode, and a cord long enough to reach the outlet without an extension cord. If the room already has a laser printer, computer equipment, lamps, and a space heater on the same 15-amp circuit, the fireplace may trip the breaker.

Best for an existing fireplace: electric log insert

If you have an unused masonry fireplace, an electric log set is often the cleanest under-$500 solution. It preserves the hearth, gives you a visible ember bed, and avoids chimney operation. Many log inserts run $125 to $400 and are around 20 to 26 inches wide. A common 1,500-watt unit produces roughly 5,100 BTU/hr and is marketed for rooms up to about 400 square feet.

Measure the actual firebox, not the brick surround. We measure front width, rear width, depth, height, hearth projection, and outlet location. Older masonry fireplaces are often tapered, so a unit that fits at the front may not sit properly in the back. If there is no outlet inside or near the fireplace, do not run a cord across the hearth or under a rug. Have an electrician add an outlet in a legal, accessible location.

For homeowners who want the built-in look without rebuilding the fireplace, this is usually the best value. It will not look like a custom gas insert, but it can make a cold, unused fireplace feel intentional again for a few hundred dollars.

Best modern look: wall-mounted electric fireplace

Wall-mounted electric fireplaces are the best fit for modern rooms, apartments, condos, and finished basements where the fireplace is more of a visual anchor than a traditional hearth. Budget models generally run $125 to $500, with price increasing for width, trim quality, flame options, remote controls, thermostat features, and quieter blowers.

Most of these units are 36 to 60 inches wide. A 50-inch wall unit can look right below a 55- to 65-inch television if the clearances in the manual allow it, but many homeowners mount both too close together. Heat discharge location matters. Some units blow heat from the top or front, and that can affect TV placement, mantels, shelves, curtains, and artwork.

Surface mounting is usually manageable for a careful DIYer with a level, stud finder, drill, and the right anchors. Recessing the unit into the wall is different. Once you cut drywall, adjust framing, add blocking, or move electrical, the project can exceed $500 quickly and may require a permit or licensed electrician.

Best furniture solution: compact electric mantel or media console

A compact mantel fireplace or media console is a good choice when you want one piece to solve two problems: storage and supplemental heat. Under-$500 models exist, especially in smaller widths around 32 to 48 inches. Wider TV consoles, better cabinetry, solid wood components, and more realistic mantel profiles commonly push the price into the $500 to $700 range.

The small electric fireplace is easy to move and flexibly place, effortlessly fitting into various spaces, while the smooth exterior allows for quick and effortless cleaning

We like this option for renters and homeowners who do not want to alter a wall. The tradeoff is quality. At the low end, many cabinets use particleboard or MDF, lightweight fasteners, and thin veneers. That can be fine in a guest room or apartment, but it is not the same as built-in finish carpentry.

Use anti-tip hardware, especially if the unit supports a television. Confirm the rated TV size and weight. Check cord routing before assembling the cabinet because the outlet location often decides whether the final installation looks clean.

Best decorative flame: small ethanol fireplace

Small tabletop or freestanding ethanol fireplaces can fall in the $200 to $500 range. They offer a real flame without a chimney, gas line, or electrical heater. That makes them appealing for certain design situations, but they require a more disciplined owner than a plug-in electric unit.

Ethanol fuel costs more per useful heat output than electricity or gas in most homes, and the flame consumes oxygen and releases combustion byproducts into the room. Use only the fuel specified by the manufacturer, refuel only when the unit is completely cool, keep it level, and follow ventilation and clearance instructions exactly. Do not treat a ventless flame as risk-free because it has no chimney.

For under-$500 buying, we see ethanol as an ambiance product first. If your main goal is warming a cold room, choose electric.

How Much Heat Can a $500 Fireplace Actually Provide?

Most plug-in electric fireplaces are limited by a standard 120-volt household circuit. The practical ceiling is usually 1,500 watts. Using the conversion of 1 watt to 3.41 BTU/hr, that gives you about 5,118 BTU/hr. Some 1,400-watt models produce about 4,774 BTU/hr.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That output can make a real difference in a closed room. A bedroom, office, nursery, basement TV area, or 250- to 400-square-foot living space can feel more comfortable, especially if the home has uneven heat distribution. In an open floor plan, a drafty room, or a poorly insulated older home, the same unit may feel weak.

There is also no magic premium model that turns a normal outlet into a furnace. With electric fireplaces, more money often buys better flame realism, quieter fans, nicer cabinetry, a better remote, timer functions, and cleaner trim. It does not usually buy dramatically more heat unless the unit uses a different electrical supply, and that would move it outside the simple plug-in category.

Real 2026 Cost Expectations

For a fair comparison, separate appliance price from installed project cost. A $299 electric fireplace plugged into an existing outlet is close to a $299 project. A $399 recessed wall fireplace that needs framing changes, a new outlet, drywall repair, and paint is not a $399 project anymore.

Project Likely total cost in 2026 What drives the price
Plug-in electric stove or log set $100-$300 Unit quality, flame effect, thermostat, remote, cabinet material
Budget wall-mounted electric fireplace $125-$500 DIY Width, bracket quality, wall anchors, trim, outlet location
Wall-mounted unit with new outlet $300-$900+ Electrician labor, wall access, circuit capacity, patching and paint
Compact electric mantel/media console $250-$700 Cabinet construction, width, TV capacity, finish quality
Small ethanol fireplace $200-$500 before fuel Burner quality, safety glass, body material, fuel cost
Gas fireplace installed About $2,300-$10,000 Gas line, venting, unit type, finish work, permits, labor
Full gas insert installation Often around $7,200-$8,800 Insert, liner or venting, gas and electrical work, finish details

Gas operating cost also varies. A gas fireplace used 3 to 6 hours per day can cost roughly $1.20 to $6.30 per day, or about $40 to $190 per month, depending on BTU input, efficiency, gas price, climate, and how often it runs. Electric operating cost depends on your utility rate. A 1,500-watt unit running for 4 hours uses 6 kWh. At $0.17 per kWh, that is about $1.02 for the session.

What to Measure Before You Buy

Most fireplace mistakes happen before checkout. The homeowner measures the overall wall or the brick surround, but not the details that determine whether the unit fits and operates safely.

For a freestanding electric stove, measure the floor area, nearby furniture, door swings, cord path, and clearance to curtains or bedding. Many compact stoves are around 20 to 28 inches wide and 10 to 16 inches deep, but the manual may require additional open space around the heater outlet.

For a log insert, measure the fireplace opening at the front and rear, the firebox height, and the depth from the front face to the back wall. Confirm whether the existing damper, grate, ash lip, or uneven firebrick will interfere. Also confirm the outlet. A heater cord should not be pinched, buried, routed under a rug, or run through a hidden cavity.

For a wall unit, measure width, height, mounting height, stud spacing, outlet position, TV location, and nearby shelves. If the fireplace is 50 inches wide, a small wall can start to feel crowded once you include required clearances. If you plan to recess it, confirm wall depth. Many interior walls are framed with 2×4 studs, giving about 3-1/2 inches of cavity depth before drywall. Not every recessed unit is shallow enough for every wall.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a media console, measure TV width and weight, not just screen diagonal. A 65-inch TV can be nearly 57 inches wide. If the console is only 48 inches wide, the proportions may look wrong and the manufacturer may not rate it for that load.

Safety Rules We Do Not Bend

An electric fireplace is still a space heater. Treat it with the same respect. Plug it directly into a grounded wall outlet unless the manufacturer states otherwise. Do not use an extension cord, power strip, cube tap, or cord hidden under carpet. Keep the cord visible and uncompressed.

Check the circuit. A 1,500-watt heater draws about 12.5 amps at 120 volts. On a 15-amp circuit, that does not leave much room for a television, gaming system, lights, computer, printer, or other loads. If the breaker trips repeatedly, the fix is not a bigger breaker. The fix is load management or proper electrical work.

Maintain clearances to combustibles. That includes curtains, bedding, furniture, paper, baskets, rugs, shelves, and seasonal decorations. Follow the manufacturer manual, not a generic rule from a product listing. Heat outlets vary by design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For ethanol fireplaces, fuel handling is the risk point. Store fuel in the proper container, away from ignition sources. Never refuel a hot burner. Do not move the fireplace while burning. Keep children and pets away from open flame, and use the unit only in a ventilated room within the manufacturer’s limits.

Gas and wood appliances are in a different category. Gas lines, venting, combustion air, carbon monoxide risk, chimney condition, hearth protection, and local code requirements make them professional projects. Solid-fuel appliances also intersect with chimney and fireplace code requirements and emissions rules. Under-$500 shortcuts are not worth the risk.

Permits: What Usually Needs One?

A plug-in electric stove or log set placed in a room and connected to an existing appropriate outlet usually does not require a building permit. That changes when you add a new circuit, install a new outlet, hardwire a unit, open a wall, modify framing, or create a recessed fireplace opening.

Rules vary by city, county, condo board, HOA, and rental agreement. In multifamily buildings, historic homes, and rental properties, restrictions can be stricter than a typical single-family house. If a landlord or HOA prohibits portable heaters or open-flame devices, an under-$500 product listing does not override that rule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gas fireplaces almost always require professional coordination. Expect permits or inspections for gas-line work, venting, electrical connections, and sometimes the appliance installation itself. Wood-burning fireplaces, inserts, and stoves should be treated as permit-and-inspection work because chimney condition, clearances, hearth protection, and flue sizing are life-safety issues.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY makes sense when the unit is freestanding, listed for plug-in use, placed according to the manual, and served by an existing outlet that can handle the load. A typical plug-in electric stove or log set can be unboxed, positioned, and tested in 30 to 90 minutes. A surface-mounted wall unit may take 1 to 3 hours if the wall is straightforward and the outlet is already in the right place.

Hire a pro when the work touches the building. That includes adding an outlet, installing a dedicated circuit, recessing a unit into a wall, modifying studs, moving trim, cutting masonry, repairing a chimney, installing gas piping, adding venting, or installing any solid-fuel appliance. Also hire help if the breaker trips, the outlet is loose or warm, the home has older wiring, or the fireplace would share a circuit with major electronics.

On our projects, the dividing line is simple: placing a listed plug-in product is a homeowner task; altering electrical, framing, gas, venting, or masonry is construction work. That line keeps small comfort upgrades from turning into hidden safety problems.

Features Worth Paying For Under $500

Spend first on safety certification, stable construction, and controls you will actually use. A thermostat is more useful than five flame colors. A quiet blower matters more than a decorative crystal bed if the fireplace will sit near a desk or bed. A timer is useful in bedrooms and offices because it reduces the chance of running the heater longer than intended.

Look for overheat protection, flame-only mode, adjustable heat, a remote with physical buttons, and replacement part availability. Cheap units often fail first at the remote, blower motor, LEDs, switches, or control board. Before buying, check the warranty length and whether the seller offers replacement remotes or parts.

For design, match the fireplace to the room. Black glass wall units suit modern rooms with clean lines. Stove-style electrics fit cottage, farmhouse, and traditional spaces. Log sets are best when you want to preserve an existing hearth. Media consoles are useful when storage matters, but they should be anchored and sized correctly for the television.

What We Would Avoid Under $500

Avoid any product that implies it can heat the whole house from a standard outlet. Avoid recessed electric fireplaces if the total budget is fixed at $500 and the wall does not already have the right depth, blocking, and electrical access. Avoid gas fireplace claims that only show the appliance price but ignore gas piping, venting, labor, permits, and finish work.

duraflame® 3D Infrared Quartz Electric Fireplace Stove Heater, Black
  • 5,200 BTU heater provides supplemental zone heating for up to 1,000 square feet to help you save money
  • Infrared quartz heat helps keep more natural humidity in the air, for comfortable heat without drying out the room’s air
  • Patent-pending 3D Flame Effect technology creates realistic flames that dance on and behind the logs with 5 brightness levels
  • Flame effect can be operated with or without heat, providing the ambiance of a gentle rolling fire all year long
  • Adjustable thermostat allows you to decide the temperature of your room

We would also be cautious with ultra-cheap units that lack clear safety listings, manuals, warranty terms, or customer support. A fireplace is not just decor when it includes a heater or flame. If the listing is vague about wattage, clearances, cord requirements, or fuel instructions, choose a better-documented model.

For wood-burning options, under $500 is usually not a realistic installed budget. Even if you find a low-cost appliance, the chimney, flue, hearth protection, permits, inspections, and clearances determine whether it is safe and legal. That is not where to improvise.

Bottom Line

The best fireplace under $500 is usually a 1,500-watt electric unit matched to the room and installed without overloading the circuit. Choose an electric stove for the easiest comfort upgrade, a log insert for an unused hearth, a wall-mounted unit for a modern feature wall, or a compact mantel/media console when furniture and heat need to work together.

Expect about 5,100 BTU/hr from a typical 1,500-watt model. That is enough to improve comfort in a closed room, but not enough to replace central heat. Keep the installation honest: direct wall outlet, proper clearances, no extension cords, no overloaded circuits, and professional help when electrical, framing, gas, venting, or masonry work enters the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best type of fireplace under $500?

For most homes, the best fireplace under $500 is a plug-in electric model. Electric stoves, log inserts, wall-mounted units, and small mantel fireplaces usually provide the best balance of cost, heat, safety, and simple installation.

Can a fireplace under $500 heat a room?

Yes, but only as supplemental heat. Most 120V electric fireplaces produce about 4,800 to 5,100 BTU/hr, which can help a closed bedroom, office, basement area, or small living room. They are not whole-home heaters.

Can I install a gas fireplace for under $500?

Not realistically as a complete project. Gas fireplace installation commonly runs about $2,300 to $10,000 in 2026 once the unit, gas line, venting, electrical work, finish materials, labor, and permits are included.

Can I plug an electric fireplace into an extension cord?

No. A 1,500-watt electric fireplace should be plugged directly into a grounded wall outlet unless the manufacturer specifically allows another setup. Avoid extension cords, power strips, and cords routed under rugs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a permit for an electric fireplace?

A freestanding plug-in unit usually does not need a permit if it uses an existing appropriate outlet. Adding an outlet, installing a dedicated circuit, hardwiring, recessing into a wall, or changing framing may require permits or licensed trade work.

Is an ethanol fireplace safe indoors?

A listed ethanol fireplace can be used indoors only when the manufacturer’s fuel, clearance, ventilation, and refueling instructions are followed exactly. It has a real flame, so it requires more caution than an electric fireplace.
