If you think you have chiggers on your skin, the first move is simple: shower with soap, scrub with a washcloth, and wash the clothes and towels you used in hot water. Do that as soon as possible, ideally within a few hours of being in tall grass, brush, leaf litter, or a damp shaded area. Chiggers do not burrow into your skin, and they do not feed on blood. The itching comes from your skin reacting to digestive enzymes left by the larval mite.

For a homeowner, the job has three parts: clean your skin and clothing now, calm the itching safely, then find and correct the outdoor conditions that brought the bites on. Chiggers are outdoor mite larvae. They are not bed bugs, fleas, or an indoor pest that normally sets up a long-term colony in your bedroom. Most problems start in patchy yard zones: shaded fence lines, unmowed transitions, brushy slopes, damp swales, leaf piles, deck edges, and planting beds that hold moisture.

On our job sites, chigger complaints usually show up around the same kinds of conditions that create other maintenance problems: poor drainage, overgrown edges, shaded deck skirts, wet soil against hardscape, and landscape beds that have grown too dense for airflow. Spraying can help in a confirmed hotspot, but the lasting fix is usually design and maintenance: more sun, more air movement, cleaner edges, drier surfaces, and fewer places for small animal hosts to travel and nest.

What Chiggers Are, and What They Are Not

Chiggers are the larval stage of certain mites. Only the larvae bite people. The adults and nymphs live in soil and vegetation and do not feed on humans. That matters because it changes how you solve the problem. You are not trying to remove an insect colony from the house. You are trying to interrupt contact with tiny outdoor larvae and make the yard less favorable for them.

Chiggers are most common in warm, humid conditions. Activity often peaks from late spring through summer and can continue into fall in warmer regions. They are especially common where a mowed lawn meets woods, weeds, brush, tall grass, or damp shade. A neatly maintained front lawn may be clean while the back fence corner, drainage swale, or shaded patio border produces bites every time someone works there.

Typical bite locations are ankles, sock lines, waistbands, behind the knees, armpits, groin, and other places where clothing fits tightly or skin is thinner. The larvae are small enough that you usually will not see them on your body. Itching is often worst in the first 24 to 48 hours and can take up to about 2 weeks to fully settle down.

In the United States, chiggers are not known to transmit infectious diseases. The main medical risk is secondary bacterial infection from scratching. Outside the United States, some chigger species can transmit scrub typhus in parts of Asia and the Pacific, but that is not the normal homeowner concern for a U.S. yard.

Skin First: What to Do Right After Chigger Exposure

If you have just come in from a likely chigger area, act before the itching ramps up. A fast shower can remove larvae before more feeding occurs. Use warm water, soap, and a washcloth. Pay close attention to ankles, calves, behind knees, waistline, underwear edges, armpits, and any area where clothing was tight.

Do not use nail polish, petroleum jelly, bleach, gasoline, alcohol, turpentine, or harsh household chemicals on your skin. Those remedies are based on the myth that chiggers burrow and need to be suffocated. They do not. By the time bites are intensely itchy, the mite is usually gone, and harsh products only add chemical irritation or burns to already inflamed skin.

After showering, put on clean clothes. Bag or carry exposed clothes directly to the laundry instead of dropping them on a bed, couch, or closet floor. Wash clothes, socks, underwear, and towels in hot water when the fabric allows. Dry them thoroughly. For most households, this is enough to prevent additional bites from anything carried indoors after yard exposure.

How to Treat the Itch Safely

Most chigger bites can be handled with basic over-the-counter care. A typical DIY bite-care kit costs about $5 to $25 and may include calamine lotion, 1% hydrocortisone cream, an oral antihistamine, antiseptic, and cold-compress supplies. Use products according to the label, especially with children, older adults, pregnant people, or anyone with sensitive skin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Cold compresses can reduce the urge to scratch. Keep fingernails short if the bites are on children. If the skin opens, clean it gently and watch for infection. Call a doctor or urgent care if redness spreads, warmth increases, pus appears, pain worsens, fever develops, or the reaction is severe. Urgent-care costs vary widely by insurance and location, but infection is the line where home treatment stops being the right bet.

Clothing, Gear, Pets, and Indoor Cleanup

Chiggers can hitchhike inside on clothing, shoes, towels, blankets, and gear after outdoor work or recreation. They generally do not establish an indoor infestation like bed bugs. That means the cleanup target is exposed items, not the whole house.

Start with the clothing that touched grass or brush. Wash socks, pants, shirts, underwear, and towels in hot water if the fabric allows. Shoes and boots can be brushed outside and left in a dry, sunny location. If you used kneeling pads, garden gloves, camping blankets, or work tarps, clean those too. A quick vacuum near the entry, laundry area, or mudroom is reasonable if clothing was dropped there, but whole-house panic cleaning is usually wasted effort.

Pets can carry chiggers in from the yard, but pet treatment requires caution. Do not apply yard insecticides, permethrin clothing sprays, or human repellents to pets unless the product label specifically allows that use. Cats are especially sensitive to some insecticides, including concentrated permethrin products. If a dog or cat is itchy after yard exposure, call your veterinarian and use pet-labeled products only.

How to Find Chigger Hotspots in the Yard

Chigger problems are usually patchy. One side yard may be fine while a 10-by-20-foot shaded strip along the fence causes bites every weekend. Before spending money on sprays or professional service, inspect the yard like a builder would inspect a moisture problem: look for shade, dampness, cover, and access paths.

Common hotspots include tall grass, weeds, brush piles, leaf litter, woodland edges, drainage swales, damp low spots, fence lines, unmowed transitions, dense foundation shrubs, and the shaded soil around decks, patios, sheds, and retaining walls. Chiggers do well where humidity stays higher near the soil surface. If your shoes are damp after walking through an area in the afternoon, or the soil stays soft two days after rain, that area deserves attention.

A simple field check costs almost nothing. Place a piece of black cardboard or black paper vertically in suspected grass or leaf litter for about 10 minutes. Tiny yellow, orange, or red mites may gather near the top edge where they are easier to see. You can also map where bites happen after yard work: ankles after trimming the back fence, waistline after clearing brush, behind knees after working under the deck. That pattern is useful.

Yard Zones to Inspect

Walk the property in sections. At patios and walkways, look for grass or groundcover touching the edge. Around decks, look for shaded, humid soil, stored materials, vines, leaves, and poor airflow under stairs or skirting. Along fences, check for weeds, volunteer saplings, and leaf buildup. Near downspouts, look for splash erosion, algae, soft mulch, and standing water. At the lawn-to-woods transition, look for brush, tall weeds, and animal trails.

We often see chigger activity where homeowners have made a comfortable outdoor space but left a damp perimeter around it. A patio may be clean in the center, but the outer 18 to 36 inches may hold dense plants, wet mulch, and shade. That is exactly where ankles and legs brush against vegetation when people walk to the grill, hose bib, gate, or trash enclosure.

Yard Cleanup That Actually Reduces Chiggers

The most reliable long-term control is habitat modification. Mow regularly, remove weeds, clear brush piles, rake leaf litter, prune shrubs for sunlight and airflow, and correct soggy areas. You are trying to make the surface hotter, drier, brighter, and less protected.

Start with a 3-to-6-foot clean buffer around outdoor living areas. Around patios, decks, play spaces, fire pits, and seating areas, keep grass short and separate dense plantings from the activity zone. A gravel, stone, or paver strip 18 to 36 inches wide can create a dry edge that is easier to inspect and maintain. Use angular gravel over compacted base where foot traffic is light, or pavers on a proper base where people will walk often.

Under decks, remove leaves, stored lumber, buckets, fabric, and debris. If the deck skirt traps humidity, consider adding vented panels or reworking the skirt so air can move through. Trim vines and shrubs away from stairs and railings. Keep the underside accessible enough that it can be cleaned at least once or twice per year.

For planting beds, thin crowded shrubs and keep mulch depth reasonable. A 2-to-3-inch mulch layer is usually enough for moisture control and weed suppression; deeper piles against foundations, steps, posts, or edging can hold moisture and shelter pests. Keep mulch pulled back from siding and wood components. Where beds stay wet, the better fix may be drainage and plant selection, not another load of mulch.

Drainage and Grading Fixes

Chiggers like humid microclimates, and poor drainage creates them. If water stands after rain, if mulch remains wet for days, or if the lawn squishes underfoot, pest control alone will be temporary. Check downspouts first. A simple downspout extension may cost under $100 in materials and can move roof water several feet away from a damp foundation bed. Larger drainage work, regrading, dry creek beds, French drains, or hardscape reconstruction can run from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars depending on slope, soil, access, discharge rules, and whether equipment is needed.

Good grading should move water away from the house and outdoor living areas. As a rule of thumb, soil should slope away from the foundation rather than back toward it. Where the lot does not allow that, a drainage plan may be needed. This is where a construction or landscape professional earns the fee: not by guessing where to spray, but by identifying why a patio edge, swale, or side yard keeps staying damp.

Repellents and Clothing Prevention

Repellents are useful when you need to work or relax in a known chigger area before the yard is corrected. DEET or picaridin can be used on exposed skin according to the product label. A typical bottle costs about $6 to $15. Apply carefully around ankles, lower legs, waistline, and other exposure points, but avoid eyes, cuts, and irritated skin.

Permethrin is different. It is for clothing and gear only unless a specific product label says otherwise. Do not apply standard permethrin clothing treatment directly to skin. A spray bottle typically costs about $10 to $20. Treat boots, socks, pants, and work clothes ahead of time, let them dry completely, and follow the label for retreatment intervals. Factory-treated clothing costs more but can be convenient for people who hunt, hike, survey, landscape, or maintain wooded properties often.

For yard work, the best clothing setup is practical: long pants tucked into socks or boots, a long-sleeve shirt, gloves, and a change of clothes ready at the door. Shower after the work. This is not fancy, but it works.

Should You Spray for Chiggers?

Targeted insecticide can suppress chigger populations, but blanket spraying the whole yard is usually a poor first move. It costs more, exposes more of the property than needed, and may miss the reason the hotspot exists. Mow, prune, rake, and clean first. Then treat confirmed hotspots if activity continues.

Always read and follow the pesticide label. In the United States, the label is the legal direction for how the product can be used: where it can be applied, how much can be used, what protective equipment is required, when people and pets can reenter, and how to avoid water contamination. Keep children and pets away during application and until treated areas are dry and the label’s reentry conditions are met.

Common yard products may include active ingredients such as bifenthrin or permethrin, depending on the product and label. These products can affect aquatic life, pollinators, and beneficial insects if misused. Do not spray near water, storm drains, blooming plants with active pollinators, vegetable gardens, pet dishes, toys, or windy areas where drift is likely. More chemical is not better. The correct rate in the correct place is the only defensible approach.

Option Typical 2026 Cost Best Use Limitations
Skin itch care $5-$25 Calamine, 1% hydrocortisone, antihistamine, antiseptic, cold compresses Does not prevent new bites if clothing or yard exposure continues
Repellent $6-$15 per bottle Short-term protection on exposed skin before yard work or outdoor activity Must be reapplied according to label; not a yard fix
Permethrin clothing treatment $10-$20 per spray bottle Treating boots, socks, pants, and gear before exposure For clothing and gear only unless label says otherwise
DIY yard tools and PPE $25-$100 Pump sprayer, gloves, eye protection, hotspot checking supplies Requires correct product selection and label compliance
DIY chigger/lawn insecticide $20-$80 for many small-to-medium yards; $50-$130+ for some professional-grade concentrates Targeted treatment of confirmed hotspots after cleanup Less effective if shade, moisture, brush, and leaf litter remain
Professional one-time pest service Commonly $50-$500; many visits land near $150-$400 Identification, targeted treatment, documentation, follow-up advice May need repeated visits if habitat is not corrected
Seasonal yard pest program About $350-$1,000 per season Recurring pressure in warm, humid, wooded, or large properties Costs rise with lot size, visit count, and severity
Drainage, grading, or hardscape correction Under $100 for simple extensions to several thousand dollars for larger work Persistent damp zones, swales, wet patio edges, poor foundation drainage Requires site-specific design and sometimes utility or discharge review

How Construction and Landscape Design Reduce Chiggers

The most overlooked part of chigger control is the physical layout of the yard. A pest company can treat a hotspot, but a well-built outdoor space makes hotspots less likely in the first place. That is where construction details matter.

For patios, keep the immediate edge clean and dry. A paver or gravel border 18 to 36 inches wide between the patio and dense vegetation creates a maintainable buffer. Pitch hardscape so water drains away from seating areas and does not collect at the slab edge. If the patio meets turf, edge it cleanly so grass does not flop onto the walking surface.

For decks, airflow is the key. Closed skirting, low clearance, stored items, and wet leaves create a humid pocket. Use vented access panels where skirting is needed. Keep plants from crowding stairs and posts. Maintain a clear service path around the deck so the underside can be inspected and cleaned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For fences, avoid letting the fence line become the forgotten strip of the property. Keep a mowable edge or install a narrow gravel maintenance strip where appropriate. Remove volunteer trees and brush before they become a shaded corridor for small animals. Where a fence meets woods, a wider transition zone may be needed.

For foundation beds, choose plants by mature size, not nursery size. A shrub planted 18 inches from the wall may look fine on day one and become a damp, shaded pest shelter in three years. Give plants room, prune for airflow, and avoid piling mulch against siding, posts, or steps.

For drainage, treat repeated wetness as a construction problem. Downspouts should discharge where water can move away without creating erosion or neighbor drainage issues. Low spots near patios or walkways may need regrading, a drain inlet, a swale adjustment, or a hardscape reset. Local rules may affect where collected water can be discharged, especially in neighborhoods with stormwater systems, easements, or HOA restrictions.

When to DIY vs. When to Hire a Pro

DIY is reasonable when bites happen after a clear, limited exposure: trimming one brushy corner, walking a wooded edge, clearing leaves, or mowing an overgrown strip. In that case, shower and wash clothing, treat itching, clean the zone, and monitor. If needed, use a labeled repellent or a targeted yard product after you confirm the hotspot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hire a pest-control professional when bites keep happening despite mowing and cleanup, when the property is large or wooded, when you cannot identify the hotspot, or when you want product selection, application rate, and follow-up documented. A one-time general pest-control visit commonly falls between $50 and $500 nationally in 2026, with many typical services landing around $150 to $400 depending on property size, pest pressure, and local pricing.

Hire a contractor, drainage specialist, or landscape professional when the chigger issue lines up with a physical site problem: standing water, soggy mulch, a shaded deck enclosure, poor grading, a patio that drains into a planting bed, or a fence line that cannot be maintained safely. Chemical treatment may knock down the larvae for a while, but wet shade and overgrowth will rebuild the problem.

For construction-related fixes, expect a wide range. A homeowner may spend under $100 extending a downspout or adding a few bags of gravel in a small service strip. A larger correction involving regrading, drainpipe, catch basins, soil hauling, paver work, retaining edges, or equipment access can cost several thousand dollars. The right scope depends on the lot, not a generic pest-control checklist.

A Practical 7-Day Chigger Plan

Day 1: Skin and Laundry

Shower with soap and a washcloth. Change into clean clothes. Wash exposed clothing and towels in hot water when the fabric allows. Treat itching with calamine, 1% hydrocortisone, cold compresses, or an oral antihistamine if appropriate for you.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Day 2: Map the Exposure

Write down where you were in the yard, what you were wearing, and where bites appeared. Chigger patterns are useful. Ankle bites after trimming the rear fence point to a different zone than waistband bites after kneeling in a planting bed.

Day 3: Inspect the Yard

Walk the likely areas. Look for tall grass, leaf litter, dense weeds, brush, wet mulch, shaded soil, downspout discharge, and deck or patio edges that stay damp. Use black cardboard for about 10 minutes in suspected areas to check for mites.

Days 4-5: Remove Habitat

Mow, edge, rake, prune, and haul away brush or leaf piles. Open up airflow under decks and around shrubs. Create or restore a dry buffer near seating areas, grills, play equipment, and gates.

Days 6-7: Treat Only If Needed

If bites continue or monitoring confirms activity, consider a targeted labeled insecticide treatment or call a professional. Keep treatment focused on confirmed hotspots, and follow every label direction for PPE, rates, runoff protection, pets, children, and reentry.

Myths and Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake is treating chiggers like they are burrowed under the skin. Nail polish, petroleum jelly, bleach, alcohol, and gasoline are not treatments. They can injure your skin and do not address the real issue.

Best Value
Sawyer Products SP564 Premium Insect Repellent with 20% Picaridin, Lotion, 4-Ounce
  • Non-greasy, fragrance free, odorless; dries quickly and won't damage plastics or synthetic coatings — safe for use on clothing, backpacks, watches, sunglasses, fishing line, firearm finishes, and more
  • Safe for use on the whole family, long-lasting insect and tick repellent spray deters a wide variety of pests — up to 12 hours against mosquitoes and ticks and up to 8 hours against flies, gnats, and chiggers
  • Fragrance-free topical insect repellent with 20% Picaridin — more effective at repelling biting flies than DEET; repels disease-spreading ticks (Lyme, tick-borne encephalitis) and mosquitoes (West Nile, Dengue, Zikam and Chikungunya viruses), chiggers, and more
  • Very comfortable to wear on your skin, it's ideal for all your outdoor adventures, from camping, backpacking, hunting, and fishing to backyard BBQs, sporting events, days at the park, and more
  • Top rated bug repellent by WireCutter/New York Times (May, 2020); maximize protection by pairing with Sawyer Permethrin tick and insect repellent spray for clothing and gear

The second mistake is waiting until the next day to shower and wash clothes. Fast cleanup is one of the cheapest and most effective steps. A shower three hours after exposure is more useful than a complicated remedy after the itching starts.

The third mistake is assuming the house is infested. If bites continue, look first at repeated outdoor exposure, pets moving through hotspots, clothing handling, or a specific yard zone near daily routines. Chiggers are usually brought inside from outdoors; they do not behave like bed bugs.

The fourth mistake is spraying the entire yard without inspection. Most chigger infestations are patchy. Treating 300 square feet of confirmed habitat after mowing and cleanup is usually smarter than spraying 10,000 square feet of lawn and leaving the damp fence corner untouched.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The fifth mistake is ignoring drainage. If the patio border, deck underside, or side yard stays wet, repeated spraying becomes a subscription to a problem the property is still creating. Dry, clean, maintainable edges are the better long-term investment.

Bottom Line for Homeowners

To get rid of chiggers on skin, shower promptly, scrub with a washcloth, change clothes, and wash exposed fabrics in hot water. Treat itching gently and watch for infection. Do not use harsh chemicals or old home remedies on your skin.

To reduce chiggers around the home, think like a builder looking for moisture and cover. Mow the lawn, open the shade, remove leaf litter and brush, clean under decks, keep patio and fence edges dry, and correct drainage where water lingers. Use repellents for personal protection and targeted insecticide only where monitoring or bite patterns show a real hotspot. When the same damp, shaded zone keeps producing bites, the lasting fix may be maintenance, grading, drainage, or hardscape design rather than another round of spray.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do chiggers burrow into your skin?

No. Chiggers do not burrow into skin and do not feed on blood. The itching comes from your skin reacting to digestive enzymes from the larval mite, which is usually gone by the time itching is severe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the fastest way to get chiggers off your body?

Shower with soap and scrub with a washcloth as soon as possible after exposure, ideally within a few hours. Then change clothes and wash exposed clothing and towels in hot water when the fabric allows.

Can chiggers live in your bed or house?

Chiggers are normally an outdoor problem and do not establish indoor infestations like bed bugs. They may be carried inside on skin, clothing, towels, or pets, so laundry and basic cleanup after exposure are usually enough.

What kills chiggers in the yard?

The best long-term control is habitat removal: mow, rake leaves, clear brush, reduce shade, improve airflow, and correct damp areas. Targeted insecticides can suppress confirmed hotspots, but they should be used according to the label after cleanup.

How much does professional chigger control cost in 2026?

A one-time general pest-control visit commonly ranges from about $50 to $500 nationally, with many typical services around $150 to $400. Seasonal yard pest programs often run about $350 to $1,000 depending on lot size, visit count, and severity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can drainage or patio design reduce chiggers?

Chiggers favor damp, shaded, overgrown edges. Proper grading, downspout extensions, gravel or paver buffers, clean deck undersides, trimmed shrubs, and dry access paths reduce the humid microclimates where chiggers are most likely to persist.
