Hens and chicks—also called houseleeks and botanically known as Sempervivum—are among the easiest succulents to grow outdoors. Give them bright, open sun, sharply draining soil and only occasional summer water. Their main enemy is not cold but prolonged wet around the roots, especially in winter.
What hens and chicks need to thrive
- Sun: an open, sunny position produces compact rosettes and the strongest colors.
- Drainage: use gritty, free-draining soil or compost; avoid heavy clay and places that stay wet.
- Modest fertility: poor to moderately fertile soil is suitable. Excess feeding can produce weaker, softer growth.
- Air and space: leave room for stolons and offsets to spread without being buried by neighboring plants.
These conditions suit rock and gravel gardens, scree beds, wall crevices, troughs and containers. Hens and chicks tolerate a range of soil pH, but no pH is a substitute for drainage.
Choosing a planting position
In the ground
Plant in a raised, rocky or gravelly area where rain can run away quickly. A slight slope, wall pocket or raised bed is safer than a low hollow. Set each plant at the same depth it occupied in its nursery pot; burying the rosette encourages rot.

Choose a shallow container with an unobstructed drainage hole. Fill it with a commercial cactus or succulent mix, or make a gritty mix that drains freely. Do not use a saucer that holds water against the pot after rain. A top dressing of horticultural grit, slate or small aggregate keeps soil off the leaves and frames the rosettes.

When and how to plant
Spring is the easiest planting season because plants can root before hot, dry weather. Planting at other times is possible when the ground or compost is workable and not saturated.
- Remove weeds and loosen the soil or empty the container of any compacted, wet compost.
- Improve drainage with a raised, rocky or gravelly setting rather than simply adding rich organic matter to heavy clay.
- Set the rosette level with its original soil mark.
- Firm the growing medium gently around the roots.
- Apply a thin mineral dressing around, not over, the rosette.
- Water once to settle a dry root ball, then allow the medium to dry before watering again.
The Royal Horticultural Society describes most houseleeks as low and spreading: generally no more than about 15 cm tall and spreading to at least 30 cm through stolons and rooting rosettes. These are guide figures, not guaranteed dimensions for every cultivar, so allow extra room for vigorous patches.
Watering and feeding
Outdoor plants
Established outdoor plants usually need little routine watering and may manage without supplementary water. During an unusually dry spring or summer, water thoroughly if the plants show that they would benefit, then let the soil dry. Frequent small drinks keep roots damp and increase rot risk.

Container plants
Containers dry faster than beds. Check the compost rather than following a fixed calendar: water when it is dry and the plant needs it, then let excess drain completely. Move a vulnerable pot under cover during prolonged wet weather.
Feeding is rarely needed in the ground. If a container mix contains slow-release fertilizer, it may feed plants for several months. After that, the RHS advises that a general liquid feed once a month during the growing season can supplement the mix. Avoid repeated heavy feeding.
Winter care: protect from wet, not ordinary cold
Most Sempervivum are hardy and require little winter maintenance. Hardiness still varies by species, cultivar and local conditions. Some grey- or hairy-leaved forms are especially susceptible to excessive winter wet, so read the nursery label before choosing an exposed site.
- Use a free-draining bed or container with an open drainage hole.
- In a wet region, shelter susceptible pots beneath a roof, in a cold frame or against rain while retaining good light and airflow.
- Do not translate a hardiness rating for one plant and region into a guarantee for every houseleek.
The RHS rates Sempervivum tectorum H7 in its UK hardiness system. That rating describes performance within that system and is not a universal climate promise.

How hens and chicks spread
Rosettes produce horizontal stolons ending in small offsets, or “chicks.” These offsets root while still attached, gradually forming a colony. A mature rosette eventually sends up a flower stalk, blooms in summer and dies; the offsets produced beforehand carry on the plant.
Spacing and dividing
Allow offsets to fill a patch naturally, or divide a vigorous clump in spring. In containers, separate crowded plants and refresh the compost every two to three years. Handle rosettes carefully so their shallow roots and stolons are not torn unnecessarily.
Propagating named plants from offsets
Offsets are the dependable way to reproduce a named cultivar because they are clones of the parent plant.

- In spring, identify small rosettes with roots on the stolon.
- Tease the offset away with clean fingers or a sterile tool.
- Pot it into gritty, free-draining compost, keeping the rosette above the surface.
- Keep the compost lightly moist while it establishes and shade it from strong direct sun.
- Gradually return it to brighter light once new growth shows.
The RHS guide gives about four to six weeks for rooted offsets to establish under suitable conditions. An offset without roots can still be detached close to the rosette and pressed lightly into gritty compost until it roots and begins active growth.

Growing houseleeks from seed
Seed is useful for species plants and experimentation, but seedlings from named cultivars are unlikely to come true to the parent. Sow extracted seed between spring and autumn in a sheltered, frost-free place. When seedlings are large enough to handle, pot them individually into gritty compost. Expect variation in color, form and texture.

Flowering is a normal part of the plant’s life cycle, not a sign that the whole colony is failing. The RHS says flowering commonly occurs after two to three growing seasons. The flowering rosette dies after blooming, while its offsets continue the patch.
If you do not want self-seeding, remove the flower stalk after flowering and before seed develops. Otherwise, leave it in place for its architectural effect and allow the offsets to replace the spent rosette.

Compare plants by more than a catalog photograph. Color often changes with season and temperature, and a cultivar suited to a dry trough may be a poor choice for an exposed, rain-soaked site.

Common problems and practical fixes
Soft, collapsing or blackened rosettes
Inspect the roots and growing medium first. Persistently wet compost can cause root rot. Remove damaged material, let the medium dry and replant healthy offsets in fresh, sharply draining compost.
Birds pulling up new plants
Newly planted rosettes can be disturbed before they root. The RHS suggests stretching temporary taut thread above the plants to deter birds while they establish.
Vine weevil in containers
Check container plants for weakened growth and damaged roots, particularly where plants are grown under cover. Replace badly affected compost and inspect roots when dividing or repotting.

Sempervivum leaf miner or rust
These pests and diseases are mentioned as occasional problems. Remove badly affected leaves, improve airflow and avoid keeping foliage and compost continually wet. A generally weak plant still warrants a drainage and root check before any treatment.
